For my birthday in 2023, I had a theme where I wanted to patronize women owned small businesses. Since I'm an animal lover, Gatos and Beans were on the list. Years ago, while on a business trip to the DC area, I visited a cat cafe and wished that we had one here in Birmingham. I took me a few years to get here but I made it and it didn't disappoint. The resident cats were so playful and mischievous (they're cats after all ) which made my visit that more fun. There were lots of toys to play with to keep the cats entertained. With admission price, I chose a cold beverage (I think it was a canned Coke?) There were books to also look at with info about each cat. The female owner passed away last year but her husband has kept the business open. I would love to go back to visit because I want it to stay open and because I love the concept of the place.

Really nice little cat cafe. The women running it were very friendly. The coffee was good. The cats were very cute. If you like cats, this is a fun place to visit!

Great environment. All the workers were helpful and the cats amazing. Went for Cat Yoga, and the instructor greeted us with a warm smile and inviting attitude. Visiting the area and would gladly do this again. Coffee was good too.

Loved the concept. On the outside of this cafe is a cat mural that is just gorgeous. The cafe is located down for 41st street and Cahaba Brewing. The cafe has two rooms. A main cafe area with chairs, couches, and the coffee machines. The other room has cats and every kind of cat tower and toy that can be found in kitty heaven. $10 gets you a free coffee/tea and entrance into the cat room. The cat room is very spacious. Many different ledges and overhead walkways for the cats to lounge on. Most of the cats are adoptable, but there are some permanent residents. The kitties come from Kitty Kat Haven in Hoover and will be on rotation. Loved it. Enjoyed petting the cats while drinking some pretty good coffee. Cats will be cats and sometimes will be out of reach, but this was a fun experience that Bham has been missing. Love the idea that the cats are adoptable and how it really showcases the kitties. The paintings and the cat towers are awesome and the designs are unique and different. I'm sure the cats just love the space and all the different toys and ledges. Will definitely be back when I need some kitty loving.

I loved my visit to Gatos and Beans! I made my reservation for their cat room online at their website. The ticket was $10 and it included an hour in the cat room, as well as a free beverage (a can of soda or a cup of drip coffee). While the cat room reservation only included those two beverages, there was also an option to upgrade your drink to another one on their menu if you should so desire. I thought it was really cute how all of the names of their drinks were cat related. The general seating area outside of the cat room was well decorated and full of bright colors. The general area also included big windows that looked into the cat room. When talking to the cat room worker, she mentioned that all of their cats have come from Kitty Kat Haven and Rescue, and that the majority of them are up for adoption. They currently have 9 cats, but they're getting a couple more this upcoming week. The cats were all friendly, albeit a bit sleepy, as the majority of them were taking cat naps. The worker mentioned that they're most energetic during the mornings and an hour before they close, so if you're looking to actively play with any of the cats, I'd recommend coming during those times. I loved how bright and open the cat room was, as well as how they softly played classical music in the background. There were also multiple toys that you're able to use to play with the cats. 2 of them loved the laser pointer, and I low key spent a solid 15 minutes playing with them with it. Time flies while you're in the room with them, and it's definitely a cool place for cat lovers to visit.

This was a lot of fun for me and my kids. But make sure you sign up on their website if you want to play with the kitties. It's 12 dollars for an hour. They are very friendly and accommodating. They have some cute souvenirs and some coffee and drink choices too if you want.

Amazing! We loved gatos and beans. Friendly staff, clean area, and lovable cats. I brought my elderly mother here with my five year old son. Great experience. You can order a latte, sit back, and wait for a new friend to come and rest in your lap. Or, you can grab a toy and play with friendly cats. We will all be back.

This was the spot we would all come to to do homework. It's still got that same warmth and charm. I came in on a Wednesday morning to sit and do some work. I ordered a cappuccino, bran muffin, and a breakup cookie to take home. The cappuccino is just as expected. Served at the perfect temp, great flavor. The bran muffin, which was my attempt to be healthy, was really a delicious stand-out. I would definitely get that again. And, of course, the breakup cookies are some of the best cookies in town. They bake all of the baked goods in-house, I believe, which gets a round of applause from me. A lot of the recipes are still the same ones I remember from 7 years ago. One thing I noticed that's even BETTER than I remember was the books and gift selection. A lot of the books caught my eye. It's a great curation of fiction, non, memoirs, birding books, children's, etc. They also carry the Village Apothecary candles, which are made locally and have some packaging I really love. Church Street is one of the Birmingham staples. I hope they're open for a million more years. They do what they do exceptionally well.

A bold claim, no? Maybe that's all you need to know... but I love writing about coffee shops so don't stop here. I love real deal coffeehouses (yes, in a house) and it's so cozy in here. I didn't stay to work because every seat was taken both times I came in (late morning), so get here early or perhaps late, if you want a seat in the middle of the week. The baristas couldn't be nicer. They took their time and chatted with customers, a rarity in those crowded coffee chains. Do check out those seasonal lattes (I mean, for February, a cherry blossom latte? Say less). My favorite is on the regular menu, a salted rosemary latte and it's literally perfect. I adjusted the sweetness level to be less so, and I loved the notes of floral rosemary and coffee. Pro tip: skip the line and order ahead!

They have outlets at not all, but several tables, so it can be a nice place to bring your computer. Music isn't very loud, so not too distracting. Parking can be difficult sometimes - there are only a few spots behind the building and a few in the front. Other than that, there is street parking on the one way next to the building, or on 18th (main drag through downtown Homewood). They have a drive-thru, but it's a bit odd at first glance. You either enter from the one way street paralleling it or from the alley that runs behind the building. It looks like you're driving up onto the sidewalk! If the line of long, it might be a bit of a wait, so I wouldn't count on it if you're in a hurry. I always get an Iced Blueberry Vanilla latte, and it's ~$7. Their rotating seasonal menus have some pretty interesting combinations that I always like to try!

I've had good coffee, great coffee, exceptional coffee, mediocre coffee, and questionable things called "coffee". O'Henry's on Highlands is a standard small coffee shop inside, nice ambience, cute. Staff is friendly for the most part. Has usual stuff like food/pastries, etc. While all nice, the one thing I've never liked was their coffee. It's standard tasting, basic B level, and when i'm in the area and have to have a coffee right now, I end up ordering a flavored coffee there, because it masks the lack of flavor of their actual coffee, which is what I really wanted in the first place. If you are an average Joe and just want a cup of coffee and there happens to be coffee shop you're parked next to, O'Henry's will do the job. I brought my husband and all of my kids so we got a nice sampling of goodies from the cases. It was all perfection. Cookies were crispy on the edges, appropriately soft in the middle. The almond cake was buttery and sweet, but not too sweet. Muffins were excellent. The food is so well done. The ambiance here? Extraordinary. Every corner, every ceiling tile, every display has been so thoughtfully curated. This place was such a treat for my eyes and my imagination. I had never heard of it until I was scrolling through highly rated coffee shops on Yelp! The space inside is large and can seat lots of people! For being in Birmingham this surprised me; I feel like most coffee shops here are fairly small.    I also appreciated how relaxed and welcoming the environment felt. It would be such a great spot for studying, meeting a friend, or even having a casual work meeting. The music wasn't too loud, and everything felt clean and well-kept.
