We booked a VRBO right up the street, and one of the reasons was the close proximity to this breakfast/brunch restaurant. At that time, we knew nothing about it, and nothing about what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. It was less than a block, and, so, an easy walk. There were still two other places nearby, but this is the one we chose, and the one we stuck with. I love the various history of New Orleans, and this restaurant is located in an old, historic building that used to be a bank. It's even rumored that Bonnie and Clyde once robbed the bank there, but that's not likely true, and there's no evidence to support the claim. Still, "stories" like that are part of New Orleans' charm. You'll find similar stories all over town, and if there aren't stories, someone will make one up, or add a ghost. It makes it fun. Right away, and almost immediately upon entering, we noticed the entire place was pretty clean. That's a good start. Of course, it was fairly early in the morning, but always a plus. We immediately noticed as well that the staff were very friendly, inviting, and accommodating. When you're still tired in the morning, it's nice to go into a clean, quiet place for a bite to eat, and be treated well, and with respect. The quiet was especially nice, and that's partly because this place is in a neighborhood, and not in any crowded business district. The food is good, too. They offer a very good variety and selection of breakfast/brunch fare, and they serve "French Truck" coffee. There's a lot of good coffee in New Orleans, but I like French Truck, and the fact that it is a local business. As for the food itself, I've already mentioned the good variety, including Southern treats you don't find just anywhere, but it also good to note that the portions are good, the presentation nice, and the flavors satisfying. All of the staff were very, very nice, but, as it often does in New Orleans, the service was not really quick. It was quick enough, though, and offered us all the time to enjoy our coffee, and our conversation while making mutual plans for the day ahead. When we were there, we went several times, and we tried several other places. Ruby Slipper stood out as a favorite. Of all the things it is, or isn't, it is definitely "very" New Orleans. read more

I was really looking forward to this place because I had heard great things. My food was pretty good overall, but some of my friends didn't have the best experience. One friend didn't like her meal and it came out cold. They also forgot her tea and then just brought her a packet with hot water instead of making it. I ordered the gulf shrimp omelet, which tasted good but was on the smaller side. The grits and biscuit were both good, and my coffee was solid. The French toast bites we shared were probably the best thing we had. Our server seemed friendly at first, but when we tried to wave her down multiple times, it felt like we were being ignored. The food was solid breakfast food - we got the bacon (4/5) and fried green tomato (3/5) starters and the florentine omelet (4/5), bayou shrimp benedict (3.5/5), migas (3/5) and catfish+grits (3.5/5) entrees. Certain parts of the entrees were colder than we would have liked (e.g., the sauce on the benedict and the biscuits that came with the entrees). Been to many Ruby Slipper cafes in states along the Gulf Coast. It's always been a pretty reliable place to go for a well-rounded breakfast, good coffee and good service. This French Quarter location had a much shorter wait than the one closer to our FQ hotel so was worth the extra walk. Everything was good except I'd never get the 'Costa Rican' breakfast again as the 'chorizo' lacked flavor intensity compared to what I'm used to and the listed plantains were not added as specified but after having to wait for 15-20 min for my cappuccino and nearly 30 min for our food, I just dug in, then realized there were no plantains after I'd finished and by the time our bill was delivered, we had to scram due to being late somewhere because of the unexpected delay here, so didn't bother complaining, didn't have even a minute for that. There weren't many other people there that morning (it was a Friday) so they must've had a kitchen staff shortage but that's just an assumption. read more

We were only in LA for about 24 hours, so not a lot of time or a a lot of places to visit. We were greeted and sat as soon as we walked in. Our waitress was great. I'm glad we came here. We got the breakfast tacos, it was different, but that's what I liked about it. I think for me, it was the tortillas that made it taste different, not in a bad way. But the desert......That set it off. It was more than the just bread with powdered sugar on it. It was peach, and it had cream around it! It wasn't Ice cream, but it was like Ice cream, but not cold. It was just ok. Nothing to rave about at all. We ordered cranberry juice but the server decided to give us cranberry with orange juice. We ordered a mimosa flight (the price was good but the flavors were just ok), I had fish and grits. The grits were cool or room temperature in some parts and kind of hot under the fish and they gave me three little pieces of fish with a big crusty and dry biscuit. Only took off one star because of our last visit. October.1 Had such a great experience from start to end. 5 star experience. Jack is a delight! Attention and service 10/10. He even gave us a little history about the place and town. We definitely decided to come back on our last day which was Friday October.3. It was much busier but still not too packed inside. We were told to wait to be called for a table for 3. I wanted to ask to have jack again but it was too late we got called. We had a different server. And this time around it wasn't such a good experience. He had a bit of a standoffish attitude from the start. The small talk seemed fake as he was just with a straight face no smile so we didn't know if we should smile laugh or stay serious. This was a complete 180 from our first experience. At one point one of the cooks came out and started a convo with us while the server was there and his attitude was 1000x better and good energy. He made a joke we laughed and the server was still straight face looked annoyed. At that point we wanted to leave. We paid cabs and he just stared the whole time while my sister was counting the cash making sure we got it right. We also didn't get a receipt. (Jack gave us a receipt to go box and a bag) With this server we asked for a to go bag and it was a huge box no bag we didn't even want to ask for one because he would have said something smart back to us. The restaurant is cute and quaint with booth seating and regular seating and decorations all around the walls. Trifecta: we loved the trifecta Benedict, especially the shrimp one! It was so flavorful and the combination of different flavors was amazing. Would highly recommend this trifecta so you can try all their classic Benedict's. Fried Catfish with Grits: also a solid order! The flavor was a little bland after eating the Benedict but having the grits was a nice comfort food in the morning. It was kind of like having Chinese porridge! I would've ordered the Shrimp & Grits instead, as others did. Berry Chantilly Pancakes: nice and fluffy! The berries were lightly sweetened in syrup and there was a generous amount of cream. A lovely way to end the meal. Service was good. Service was a little slow but worth the wait. It is New Orleans after all and they were down a few people being out sick. Food... so start with Fried Green tomatoes which I got as my meal. It was pretty good even though they were out of the sweet stuff for the top. No I can't remember the name. Two of my friends got the Trifecta. It was a LOT of food. Other than some of the biscuits being overcooked it was just fantastic. My other friend got the biscuits and gravy with some sweet heat chicken on the side. The menu has classics like shrimp and grits but it also dishes out some great, fresh takes on the classics. I had the Chicken St Charles eggs beni and it was wonderful. Chicken was crispy and perfectly cooked, the biscuit was clearly house made, the pork tasso cream sauce (whatever that is) was eye opening and the egg on top was perhaps the best poached egg I have ever meet in my life.
