The busing staff was very prompt and clearing away dishes, but the waitress took a very long time to greet us and take our order. We were there when my kids were small 8 years ago, and back again for Sturgis. Love this place. Great place to meet people and always great food with a lot of filling food for a good price. Ruby House was very good! Our waitress was either outstanding or is up for an Oscar because she was genuinely concerned and adamant about making sure my daughter got her gluten free order just right! Impressive! As we know that doesn't happen very often. Daughter got the Indian fry bread...canned beans, Taco Bell meat, the fry bread taste exactly like Taco Bell's chalupas. This place is all about the artifacts on the wall and kitschy ambiance. My country chicken fried steak was tough and smothered with gravy which was on point and yummy. The mashed potatoes were flat without creamy or buttery taste more so bland. We gave this place a try on a busy Friday night...with no reservations, so we didn't have high hopes of getting in...as we have 5 kids. They accommodated us right away at two different tables. Came here last October for a beer when my wife and I were visiting. The staff is friendly and they have measures in place to protect from guests contaminating the bar. The ambiance is cool. Other than that, my experience was uneventful. If you are someone who is looking for an experience as you have a drink, they may not be it. However, if you just want a drink, this may be your place. Food is great, nice gluten free options. Fun atmosphere and full bar. A wonderful "destination" restaurant with that Black Hills feel.

You really come to this restaurant for the atmosphere (plus, it was the only thing open in the off-season) and that's what the rating is for. It really does feel like eating in a saloon during the gold rush period. We found the local liquor laws a little odd (they are sold by different waitresses and come on separate bills - The bar waitress brought one drink and then pretty much disappeared for the rest of the meal. Our waitress couldn't even find her and had to give us cash to leave on the table for the liquor bill). The food is good (deserves about 3 stars), but the decoration is really what shines. My family had the following: French Dip - Kinda small, but good taste. Indian Taco - Best meal of the group. I really liked this (wife was kind enough to share). Took the 1880 train from Hill City, and decided to check out Ruby House for lunch. Loved the decor. Reminded us of a wild west saloon combined with a brothel. Had a very attentive waiter, Justin, and a great bar waiter, whose name escapes me. I had the Indian taco, which was excellent. Husband had spaghetti and said it was good. Meals could have been a bit hotter (temperature). Left just as gunfight show was about to start, need to see that! read more

The hostess is the main thing bringing this down to a 3 star review. We went to get our name on the list and she seemed annoyed that she had customers. She said it'll be a 30 minute wait, shoved a buzzer into our hands and turned away. We assumed (correctly) that the buzzer would work outside on the deck/patio so we hung out there. Our server was very polite but not very attentive, it felt like she might have been over sat. Our salads took a while to come out and our food even longer. I enjoyed my filet and baked potato. My friend got the bourbon ribeye and it was the fattiest steak I've ever seen served at a restaurant! The bourbon sauce was great on it though. Also a huge thank you to the Ruby House for serving broccoli! Most places in the area don't offer a fresh veggie. NEVER AGAIN - WORST EXCUSE FOR A COOK I HAVE EVER SEEN - We went to the Ruby House for dinner. There was 9 of us. I ordered my Rib Eye steak the way I always have - well done. I have never had a problem with that. My steak came and it was black charcoal, and so crispy and the edges were curled. I called our waitress and asked her to take it back and have another steak cooked. She returned a couple minutes later and said, and I quote, "the cook said if you order another steak well done it will come out the same way so you had better order something else !!!" And I have witness's to that. I have never been so rudely treated. I wish I had thought to get photos of my steak before I returned it. So, I ordered the chicken strips and they were so hard and crispy that I could only eat a couple by picking off the breading. Another member or our party ordered the Rib Eye medium well, her steak was fine. If her steak was fine for medium well, my steak, as thin as it was for $26.95 should have only taken another 45 seconds to be well done and edible. Yes, there was a disclaimer for well done, and I can understand and accept a little under cooked or a little over cooked, but in 50 years of eating my steak well done I have never been served charcoal or treated so rudely. read more

Found this place while staying in Kestone, during our visit to Mount Rushmore. We ended up not seeing the mountain due to the weather, but our dinner partly made up for the disappointment. My wife and I decided to try the smoked spare ribs and got the full rack to share. We couldn't finish it because the ribs were so thick with meat! The ribs were coated with just enough sauce to give it flavor but not drenched so we could still taste the meat. The staff was very efficient, friendly and clearly loved their jobs. The servers could be seen rushing around with their orders, plates and what-not, and the bus staff would scan the room and quickly remove finished plates. The food was great, we both got their bourbon ribeye which was amazing even more impressive was the staff. Our waiter was Devan who always attended to us with a constant smile and energy of happiness and was awesome to talk to. He always made sure we were being taken care of and took care of us well. Pretty unexceptional. I know this is Keystone, so you can't really expect great food,but I was expecting this place to be a bit better given the fairly good reviews. Went here with my family and we each ordered dinner. My sister and dad got steaks, my mom got trout, and I got the Cajun pasta. The pasta in my dish was waaaayy over-cooked. I can understand over-cooking pasta just a bit, but this was basically mush. There's nothing appetizing about mush. My mom's trout was mediocre at best. She said that the fish didn't taste very fresh, which is surprising given this is South Dakota. She also found it under seasoned and bland. As for the steaks, both my sister and dad seemed to think they were OK. Nothing special. Service was lackluster throughout the entire evening. We had two waiters, which got confusing. And there was a misstep when we tried to order onion petals as an appetizer and never received them. (Thankfully they were taken off the bill). So, overall I would not highly recommend this place. I know it's slim pickings in Keystone, but try somewhere else if you can. And don't get the Moscow mule if you do come. Weakest drink ever. read more
