I stopped by Ruben's recently for the first time in a long time. I was starving and in the area and placed an order for pickup online. It was ready within 10 minutes. I got the chicken bowl which comes with rice, beans, cheese, and pico de gallo. The rice was a Spanish-style rice which had a nice flavor. The chicken was just grilled chicken and nothing special but everything blended well together. It was a generous serving size too and easily could be 2-3 servings depending on how hungry you are. My husband was in San Diego last week and came home with tales of all of the great Mexican food he had. I was stewing in jealousy, until I happened to stumble upon a walk-up window in Baltimore serving up authentic California style Mexican food. As the youths say, this place is bussin. It was the perfect burrito especially late at night coming back from bars but they have closed a couple of times (due to covid and also I think for management changes) and since they have come back it just isnt the same. I thought the website was cool and also that this is a family-run Baltimore business. My enchantment ended right there. I was hugely disappointed in the food and the nonchalant attitude toward customer service. The Founder's Burrito was chock full of fatt chunks and the chicken in the Quesadilla was overcooked and dry. Worse, I was told they couldn't do anything about it. "It comes to us that way." Ruben's is such a hidden gem in Baltimore. I've had their food from their food truck and the Fell's location. The burrito always comes STUFFED to the brim and their sauces are DIVINE. I love how fresh their food is and how quickly the service is for the food to be made ready to go. Perfect to grab at the fells point square area and sit outside and eat! Ordered online and almost missed this little "taco window" because I was walking too fast! It really is easy to miss. Just ring the doorbell and they'll bring your food right over. I got the regular burrito with signature hot sauce and it was one of the best burritos I've had in a while. Just a classic burrito. Burrito was really small and didn't have a lot of flavor until I added the signature sauce which was really spicy but good once you mixed it with the liquidy sour cream packet. I loooooovvvveee their tacos. They are the most perfect tacos to me. My partner used to bring them home and they'd be delicious and reheated well. I finally went and ordered them myself and they were still delicious. They are very consistent. We walked up and rang a doorbell and ordered the food. You can see the kitchen through the window. I ordered my food through a window and waited for about 10 minutes for our food to be ready. I ordered the chicken tacos which are about 2.5$ a taco. My friend ordered the carne tacos. The corn shells are perfect. They are soft but firm. They hold all the filling well without tearing. I used to prefer flour tortillas, Bit this place converted me. The tacos are little but bursting with filling. I like how the chicken is very finely chopped. It isn't shredded or ground but just finely chopped. The texture is really good to me. It comes with the various toppings. But what really makes this amazing is the hot sauce that comes with it. It is spicy and full of flavor. I have been searching for a good Birria taco spot in Baltimore for a while now. Ruben has delivered, I was on the Uber Eats app last night and noticed they had a promotion of buy one get one free. I placed my order and picked it up. When I arrived I had to ring a bell and a gentleman gave me my order through the window. Each Birria order comes with 3 crunchy tacos filled with beef, Mexican cheese, onion, cilantro and of course a side of consome. These tacos were so good, just melted in my mouth. The beef was cook to perfection and the sauce was well seasoned. I even used the left overs for my ramen noodles. I went to Ruben's to partake in Yelp's Celebrate the 410 deal. For $4.10, I got to try their Founder's Burrito. I must say this deal was a steal! The burrito was huge! It was loaded with chicken, steak, rice, beans, veggies, cheese, guacamole, and their signature sauces. Honestly, I could only ear half of it because it was so big and filling. The burrito is definitely shareable or can be split into two meals. Some other things to note... Ruben's is not a sit down or even a walk-in restaurant. You place your order at the window outside. This could absolutely suck if it's bad weather and you had to park blocks away while you wait for your food. They give you an estimated time that your food should be ready. I visited on a nice day so I just waited on the sidewalk until my order was ready. This is literally a to-go/carryout type of spot so don't expect to have anywhere to sit and eat here. If you absolutely can't wait to get home, you can check out the nearby Cross Street Market and utilize their seating areas. Nevertheless, the food is definitely tasty and worth it. Not gonna lie. This place is very mid. Reading the comments and watching videos it's clear that this place is the go to when you are drunk or late at night. Been a few times so far. Pretty basic. Flavor is there (most of the time) but the chicken is always dry smh. Got the steak a twice and the same thing. DRY! I'm thinking the meat is sitting out too long or it's being cooked too long. Got this veggie rice bowl for takeout! It had lots of vegetables and I really enjoyed how fresh it tasted. It had pico on top along with mushrooms, spinach, and beans. It was heavy on the rice. This was a nice little Mexican restaurant that's near the Inner Harbor. We walked here from our hotel. They don't have any seating in the restaurant so be aware of that. YES YES YES! Yes, I give them 5 stars. Yes, I would return. Yes, this place is awesome. I visited Ruben's today for the first time for the Yelp Event and I am so glad I did. I had never been before and it is just under 30 minutes from my house. There was plenty of street parking which you do have to pay for but it only cost me $1.00 for 40 min. There was a one dollar minimum at the pay station if you use a credit card. One dollar is better than a parking ticket even though I paid for more time than I needed. Upon walking up to Ruben's I learned that they don't have an inside at all for customers. It didn't even look like they did before Covid. They just have a kitchen. A friendly gentleman opens the door/window to greet you and take your order and payment. They do have a door bell to utilize if they don't see you but I did not need to use it. I advised that I was there for the Yelp Event and they were super ready and accommodating. I have been to some events where businesses act like you are a bother. That was not the case. I ordered the Cali burrito and the mango agua fresca. In addition, I ordered two tacos - veggie and carnitas. It took less than 10 minutes for my order to be ready at which time I just stood to the side on the sidewalk. I am honestly not the biggest fan of Baltimore but Ruben's has a great location and is surrounded by other nice businesses. Upon arriving home I was happy to see how well the food was packaged. It would survive any ride. The cali burrito was packed with plenty of meat and veggies. The two tacos were put together well and delicious! I loved how their sauces were packaged. Very convenient. The mango agua fresca was tasty and came with a completely sealed lid which was nice for transporting. All of the food was delicious. I have already recommended it to my friends who still work in Baltimore. I will definitely be back when in the area because they have several more menu items I'd love to try. The goodie bag with the hot sauce they provided for the Yelp event was super cute and had some unique Mexican candies in it. I thought it was nice they went above on beyond and even had a hand written thank you card thanking me for visiting their small business. Please note that you need cash to tip. This is a great little taco shack in the center of Fells Point near the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland. The tacos are reasonably priced, absolutely delicious, and service hot and fresh! The best part they have a variety of options so you can mix and match to your hearts desire. They also had a cute outdoor picnic area to sit and eat your tacos. Just ok. Pictured is my order of two chicken quesadillas and one founders burrito. At $14 each I expected the quesadilla to have a bit more flavor as the chicken needed more char and the cheese was flavorless. Would recommend eating with pico de gallo if possible. The salsa helped but it only provided spice and not as much freshness, more like jarred salsa instead of a freshly made morning of salsa. The burrito was much smaller than what I expected for $19. The guac and peppers did not seem to influence the flavor at all, if you are craving a burrito I would recommend a simpler, cheaper burrito. Chances are you'd be dousing it in salsa for flavor anyway. Indoor dining is not open at the moment but I was greeted by future CEO Crystal (read there website when you have the chance). This place is known for their burritos and for a good reason. I'm already by default a messy eater. But this burrito was so well put together that I didn't drop once. It was also MASSIVE. I couldn't even finish it. I also got the Jamaica tea as well as extra hot sauce, they have 3 different signature sauces, all amazing. My favorite was definitely the green sauce, so don't forgot to get it with your meal! The Jamaica came in a huge cup as well. The chicken and steak were cooked perfectly. The whole burrito had a perfect balance of all the fillings. It also has a kick to it from the signature sauce. Stopped by Ruben's after the Orioles game. They stay open super late. I ordered the veggie quesadilla because one of the customers said the quesadilla is the best thing. The veggie quesadilla had onions, spinach, mushrooms, and cheese. The portion size was great. The flavor was good, as well. At first glance, the burritos seemed to be a decent size packed with ingredients- though upon eating we realized the burrito was pretty much all rice- the menu stated inside should have been a mix of: rice, beans, salsa, Mexican cheese, chicken & steak- though in all there was very minimal meat inside the burrito, barely any cheese or beans- and the tortilla was very thick- so even at a reduced $4.10 I was still disappointed by the quality (let alone if I paid full menu price)- at least at Chipotle you see each ingredient evenly being added to the burrito. Kinda bummed that my first experience at Ruben's storefront was not great, as I've been ordering from their stand at the farmer's market for years. Stopped in the other night to redeem my free chicken quesadilla through their rewards program and also ordered some fries. Although their website clearly states that the reward is a chicken quesadilla, they refused to redeem it for such, and insisted that it was a cheese quesadilla...pretty annoying since I showed them on their own website what it says, and it still hasn't been fixed. The cheese quesadilla was fine-burnt on one side but you could kinda peel it off, but it had very little flavor-a cheese quesadilla is honestly one of my favorite go tos at a Mexican place and hard to not be delicious, so I'm not sure if the cheese they used was super bland or what-it did look like cheddar rather than chihuahua or oaxaca like most places use for melting purposes. The fries looked like real potatoes-+5 for that, but they were undercooked and limp and the serving was TINY-like 10-15 fries for $3.49. Not cool. I ended up crisping them up in my air fryer once I got home and they were great, but you don't order out too recook your own food, and I expect to get more than a skimpy handful of fries if they cost almost $4. Ruben's, you disappointed me this weekend! I will be back because I know what you're made of, so step it up next time!
