Ruang Thai is new so it has a nice clean atmosphere. Nice that it is BYOB- they should give it additional consideration especially if you are with a group. But it is small so it cannot be too big of a group! Pad Thai was only fair not very tasty. Fresh whole fish with red chili sauce was very good and ample to split for 2 people. Ordered hot tea and they brought out one of those tea bags in a triangular box and charged $3.50 for it! (????). We ended up ordering the fried ckn and shrimp platter, Tom Yum, and shrimp app. The shrimp app was fine nothing extraordinary, the Tom Yum had too much lemon for my taste very acidic. The fried ckn and shrimp platter was mainly chicken and was descent. However, it was very pricey! 16$ for soup and 17$ for the platter, was way too much for the lack of flavor. If you KNOW Thai food (forget those who rave about Pad Thai being "awesome Thai food" - they know nothing) this is legit. First - Holy Crap! Nam Tok Nua?! My favorite and nobody in town makes this. Ruang was as close to authentic as can be done here. Sticky rice was a bit too moist but not tragic. Som Tom (Thai style not Laos) was a delight even without the dried shrimps and plenty of it. Gang Ka Ree? Nailed it. Larb Gai? Close your eyes with spice level 5 and it will transport you to Issarn. I'm coming back with BYOB supplies, some friends who deserve this experience, and transporting myself back to my beloved Thailand- if only for a few hours. I lived outside Bangkok for 6 years and turns out, not far from the owner's home near Bang Na. Ruang Thai and Street Eats in Carrollton are all I've found to be real Thai food in Dallas - for those who know. read more

Came here with a friend one chilly night. I ended up ordering a curry dish that wasn't memorable. Our server/hostess was a little pushy, insisting that my friend order a specific (and a little more pricey) tea that she wasn't interested in, and the same with me, initially. Aside from that, service and food were okay, crowd was small, meal was served hot and quickly. Tom kha $6.25 for a small. It had notes of the flavors that I'm used to, but it was different still...a little salty even. I probably wouldn't order it again. Kang ka ree $12.95. ka ree curry, coconut, bell pepper, potato, onion, and carrot...served with rice. I ordered it with poultry. 3.5 out of 5 on deliciousness. I would order it again. Side note: I love spice...but I suggest not going above a 3 unless ghost peppers are a staple in your home. The heat rises steeply with each increasing number beyond 3. Went to this restaurant over a ago. Was disappointed when I went to Dallas in October and couldn't find it. This place has some of the best Pad Thai that I have ever eaten and I travel a lot. New to the area we have been in search of a good Thai restaurant. After reading the positive reviews we thought this would be the place, however our experience left us wondering if we were on Candid Camera or Punked. After receiving our beverage order we noticed that one of the four did not have a straw, which we then politely asked for. When the server came back, she still didn't bring the straw. No biggie, perhaps she forgot. So when another server stopped to drop off something we asked her for a straw. After while we saw the original server and again asked for the straw. It wasn't until a fourth request was made that a straw ever appeared. The guest without a straw began to wonder why he was the only one who was served a soda without a straw. We ordered 2 orders of the Shrimp Rolls. The first order came out chilled as is typical. The second order was warm. I've never been served warm spring rolls before and it was not pleasant. We also ordered the fried tofu, which was surprisingly good. Thick triangular cuts perfectly fried to a golden crisp on the outside and soft inside. Now, this is why my review is actually only 3 stars. Despite the "no straw for you" event which the rest of my party found quite funny and the warmed spring rolls, the food was decently good (not mind blowing nor the best Thai I've ever had. We asked for level 5 spice and it was not as spicy as we would have wanted). When the same same guest who was omitted a straw was served his meal, he opened his rice bowl and noticed it was only half full. He commented that aren't rice sides usually rounded? He said it looked as if it was an already served and eaten bowl of rice. We thought that was perhaps how the rice was served here until I received my meal and opened my rice bowl...a nice steaming rounded mound of rice. We realized he was definitely served someone's leftover rice. Ew. We asked for an additional bowl of rice and simply put that one to the side. I am not sure why this member of my party received such poor service. The rest of my group received excellent service and I could tell that there were several regulars in the restaurant as well who received above average service. We seriously pondered whether there was some hidden camera filming this all and waiting for the poorly served guest to make a scene. He never did and left a generous tip of 20%. I've been in this restaurant for years because they have delicious Thai food in Plano. I always get the spicy fried rice with level 4 spicy. It's so yummy. This is the second Thai restaurant (after Simply Thai Bistro in Frisco) when I ask for spicy, it's actually spicy. That's another yes for me. Service is nice, they treat you like family member. I only gave 4 stars because of the price. Average $11 for lunch, $13 for dinner and $10 for appetizer, and the portion doesn't worth the price you pay. If you compare to other Thai place, it's overprice. I wish they could low the price, or make the portion of food bigger. read more

I came here for dinner during the Christmas holidays with my dad and brother. I'm not familiar with this area of town, but we chose this place because it's kind of become my family's go-to place for Thai food. The first several minutes of our dinner experience were not promising. The three of us sat at the table and waited for several minutes... with no water, no menu, and no one checking on us. My (impatient) brother wanted to leave, but I convinced him that we should just wait... because the restaurant owners were there and seemed so nice. :o) Thankfully, the rest of our dinner experience ended up being pretty pleasant. We shared a number of plates among the three of us: the pad ki mow, the crab fried rice, the red curry with beef, and the fish filet with ginger. I can't say any of the dishes were particularly amazing. But all were solid. And I was just happy that they had brown rice. Finally, the ambiance of Ruang Thai is pretty interesting. The interior is decorated with colorful Thai details, is very well lit (maybe a little too well?), and the tables are covered with white table cloths with a somewhat fancy setting. Located on the 15th Street side of 15th and Custer, Hubby and I drive by each day and decided to stop for dinner. The sweet ladies provided attentive service with a smile. The food was really good. Hubby had the duck curry with pineapple and lychee and I had the pad see ew. Hubby raved about his curry and I equally enjoyed by noodles. I love this place! I went here with my boyfriend because we passed by and decided to try it for lunch. They do close after 2 or 3 and then reopen for dinner, but we didn't know that. Although we came close to lunch closing time, the owners (I think they were the owners!) encouraged us to stay and eat, which was so sweet of them. My boyfriend ordered the panang curry and I ordered green curry. The lunch meals come with tom yum soup. I like how it was different than other restaurants because it wasn't filled with oil. The portions were just right; not too much and not too little. I liked how spicy my curry was as well. I like my thai food spicy and sometimes other restaurants don't get it right because it's usually not spicy enough for me. We ordered dessert that the owner recommended and it was great! I don't remember what it's called but it was sweet sticky rice with some kind of egg custard. After we paid, the owners talked to us for a while even though it was past closing time! What a delightful find here in Plano just a little off the beaten path. This restaurant is extremely clean and well cared for. The decor is beautiful! I love that the menu offered photos for all dishes. The restaurant owner was happy to make recommendations and loved that I like my food very spicy. She even brought me bird peppers her sister grows in her home for my duck rolls because of my taste for hot food. The texture of the duck rolls was perfect! It was a substantial serving, too. She recommended the green curry over the pad pak, and I'm so glad I took her advice. The tofu was cut into bite-size pieces allowing for you to take it the full flavor of the vegetables and curry. Again, another generous portion here. I would have dessert, but I'm too full! Next time. Excellent food, attentive and friendly service. This restaurant is hidden at the corner of Dolphin and Custer, just past 15th. Though it is located in a dying strip mall, the decor inside is sparse but smart, with dressing screens flanking the door, a wall full of flameless color changing candles, and assorted Thai artwork. My friend and I were seated and immediately brought out water and very cool wooden bound menus. A gentleman offered us soup, and left us to peruse the menu, The soup was wonderful, just the right amount of spice and fresh veggies with a flavorful broth. We also had hot tea, which they serve a lemongrass ginger tea by Tea Forte. They brought out individual tea pots, mugs, saucers, lemon, and honey. Very comprehensive tea service. The duck rolls were awesome. They came in a thick wrapper, flavorwise was similar to a chinese pancake filled with shredded duck and crisp veggies. We added a little chili oil after the owner suggested it, and it brought the dish together. I wished there were more than 4 to an order, they were so good. My friend and I both ordered pad see eaw, one beef, one chicken. We chose medium spicy for our noodles, and they arrived perfectly cooked, not clumped together, with broccoli and egg. The lunch specials were super cheap, and the couple that owned the place were happy to answer all our questions, kept our teapots and water glasses full the whole time, and even gave us tea to-go after we managed to cram the last bits of noodle in our mouth. The owners are the most gracious and attentive hosts I have seen in quite some time. As much as I hate to give this place just 2 stars since the service was extremely kind, I cannot find one reason to come back to this place. Everything here is so expensive! It's almost $12 for just a simple noodle dish. It's not the first time I've seen prices like this, although I would say it's not the most common, but the price came with such a small portion! Majority of our table ordered the pad see ew and the portion size was just so small. Most of them also claimed that the pad see ew was "too sweet". I got the gang ped pet yang which is a red curry with duck, and again, I've never seen curry for around $15. It seemed somewhat justifiable since my dish did contain duck, but even more so, portion size was SO small. The dish that the curry came in was so shallow, there was basically no curry whatsoever. They instead included a ton of fillers like the vegetables to take up volume but I was able to finish my entire meal which is saying something because I ALWAYS have leftovers to take home when I order curry. I do like how the restaurant offers more variety of Thai food than a lot of other restaurants, so it adds to the authenticity of the place, but with such high prices and small portions, I don't see myself ever coming back here. read more

Having been to Thailand several times and sampled Thai cooking around the US and world (including my own kitchen!), I can say that this is the finest Thai restaurant to come around in a long time. I am a fairly regular customer of Jasmine Thai II. However, I decided to give this relatively new spot a try. This trip was a take-out night, rather than dine in. The proprietors have made the best of a corner strip mall spot. The interior is decorated in a tasteful southeast Asian style with a flair for the modern (LED lamp wall). Of course, there are the tokens of honor to the Thai royal family and Buddhist monks, as you might expect. The menu has an extensive selection of curries, more than I had ever seen in a lot of other Thai places. I had a conversation with the owners about what regional cuisines that their menu draws from within Thailand (central, Bangkok). I ended up ordering my Thai litmus test: yellow curry with chicken and Pad Kee Mow (drunken noodle) with pork. Note: some people think that Pad Thai is the litmus test however people in Thailand feed Pad Thai to their children. It's like Mac and cheese over there. Not that interesting and more of a comfort food. Mrs. Owner tried to entice me with the Massaman Curry. Apparently, CNNgo recently ranked it #1 in Top 50 Most Delicious Foods (as ranked by public polling). I will try that next time. After a pleasant conversation, my food was ready to go within 10 minutes. Of course, sadly, there was no one else in the restaurant at the time. I asked if business was good but they gave me the "so-so" sign. THEY NEED MORE BUSINESS! Life's too short for bad or generic Thai food. Give your favorite place a break and head to Ruang. We've been going to Ruang for a few years - sometimes as much as weekly. Service is like family (you feel like you're at your grandmother's or aunt's house) and the food is really good. We eat a lot of Thai and I know there are regional variations but the food and overall experience of this place is so cozy and friendly - have to give 5 stars. We especially enoy the crispy fried chicken, green curry, Pad Nam Prik Pow, Pad Prik King, Thai Spicy Fried Rice, and Pad Kee Mow but frankly, we've never had a bad dish. The couple that runs this restaurant are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. They are incredibly attentive and you will immediately feel that you are in good hands. We both had hot lemongrass tea and out came a small teapot for each of us as well as a plate with our own jar of honey and a slice of lemon. It was lovely! My boyfriend started with the duck rolls which he absolutely loved and then had one of the curries which was tinged with a good amount of heat. For my entree I had the Pan Woon Sen with chicken which was delicious. The menu had many tempting items I can't wait to try out. This may be one of the cleanest restaurants in the DFW Metroplex! My wife and I stopped in here a few weeks back once again during the horrible winter weather when most of the city was shut down. There was a small group of patrons in there with us and the staff was more than happy to accommodate us that day. We would start off with an order of the duck rolls. This will be a must order on each returning visit! These things are unbelievably delicious. Crispy duck with vegetables wrapped in a light fluffy pastry these are beyond heavenly! We would both order Padt Thai as our entrées and I chose the beef and my wife chose the combination. I went with spice level four and their spice level is true as my bald head was sweating! The Padt Thai was very tasty and plentiful with a nice portion of beef in the dish. If I could give eleventy-billion stars, I would. The food is by far the best Thai I have had. It's very hard for me to not order 'something something ka pow'. I'm sorry but that's all I remember in the name. Just say, ka pow and they will know what you mean. Also, the Tom Kha is seriously amazing. I could drink my water weight in that soup. I've probably been to Ruang close to 30 times. Yes, the spice consistency does change from time to time but it's usually close enough (I always order level 3 spicy). If it's not spicy enough for you, go ahead and ask for the Thai spicy sauce but I'd bring a bottle of Pepto to sip on. It used to be just the married couple serving but thankfully it appears they have hired a few kids to help them out since they are getting busier (yay!) If you are on a time crunch, I wouldn't go during lunch because sometimes it does take a little while to get your bill, etc. BUT please do go for dinner - you won't regret it! tl;dr - Moral of the story: If you want extremely satisfying Thai food and a pleasant experience, come to Ruang! ps. I honestly couldn't think more highly of this place. After eating here as many times as our wallets allow it, my girlfriend and I have yet to find a dish here that isn't fresh and delicious in every way. The food is authentic and like some other reviews have already stated, they are not afraid to go hard on the spice. Even though the prices are a bit higher than other places, the quality is far superior to all Thai places around the area. The portions are just about right as I always end up practically licking my plate but definitely full and satisfied. If the quality of the food wasn't enough, the service here almost tops it. It's true that it is a small staff but the mom and pop feel of this place is what makes it so special and authentic. The whole restaurant exudes a vibe of attention to detail that translates to their customer service. The lady that greets you and takes your order is super attentive and genuinely cares about your experience. I have been coming to Ruang Thai for the past year, and I have never been disappointed with the experience. The food and service is always top class--the waiters are always so polite, the owner takes your order personally and remembers you the next time you come in, and the food always arrives quickly and piping hot. If I had to have one complaint it is that the spicy levels (you request 1-5) can sometimes be inconsistent between dishes, but this is such a small problem that it hardly bothers me. If you aren't a fan or used to spicy food, be sure to order a 1 as anything higher is probably above normal spicy fare at other restaurants. Soups also tend to be spicier. I particularly recommend any of the curries (they are all so delicious and the best part of this restaurant), the pad kee mao, the garlic noodle soup (n6 on the menu) or the tom kha. Having been to various other Thai restaurants in the Plano/Richardson/Dallas area, nothing even comes close. In fact, I usually leave those restaurants wishing I had been at Ruang Thai instead. read more
