Ped pad kha prao (boneless duck in hot chili and fresh basil)
Emi V.

This is my second time at Ruan Thai! The employees are always nice, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you're eating at home. I got the Ped Pad Kha Prao which is the boneless duck with hot chili and fresh basil. It is so good but it is spicy, so ask for no spicy even if you can eat a little bit spicy. The beef mussa mun was also good. It reminds me of a Vietnamese dish called bo kho. Keep in mind that they do close for an hour from 3:30-4:30pm, so if you come a little before 3pm you might be cutting it close.

My go to spot for Thai, the service was great. I thought portion sizes were good. The green and red curries were flavorful. The place could use an update and a bit of cleaning.

Another great dining experience. Service is always pleasant. Food is very good. The ambiance is casual.

The staff were patient and polite. There's a great range of variety on the menu. A standout item is the fried watercress seafood salad. It has calamari, shrimp, cashews, onions etc with a sweet/zesty sauce. I would prefer more shrimp than squid in the dish. Italian sizable appetizer for sharing. Parking is horrendous with maybe five parking spaces in a tiny lot that may require maneuvering. If you find street parking, pay the meter even if you just run in to pick up an order.

Food was amazing! Parking, not so much. Updating my post since it's been about 8 years since my experience where the waiter ran after us asking for more tip. Other than that, food and service was good! Definitely changed over the time.

The food here was very tasty and well seasoned. We sat in to dine and had great service as the staff was friendly. I would recommend this spot if you are in the mood for Thai food.

The food and cleanliness of this establishment needs to improve. Our waitress was kind and attentive but it's not her fault. It is the fault of the owner or management that needs to address these issues. The bathroom was very atrocious and you could see mouse dropping all around the toilet and sink on the floor. It blends in due to the dark tiles but you can tell that this place has an infestation and needs to be addressed. I wish I hadn't ate here because of that fact but I had already eaten and I wished I took a photo of the droppings I saw onto this post although I did take a photo of the food. The food didn't taste fresh either and it's probably a reflection of unhygienic the restroom is. I would recommend people to dine elsewhere like Thai chef in Bethesda MD or Tiki Thai in Virginia. I will never be dining here again nor will I ever recommend this establishment.

Such a hidden gem in the Wheaton area! I just had dinner here with a couple of friends. Here's my review breakdown: - Food: They did not miss on ANYTHING. I had the Tom Yum soup and #14 Yum Woon Sen. The soup was super flavorful and good, everything I expect from the soup. #14 was something new I decided to try. I am so glad I did, it was good and fresh. Definitely recommend that as an appetizer. My friend had the chicken pad Thai and it was perfect! When I say everything HIT, it was all good. - Drink: We ordered Thai teas and this place had the best Thai tea I've EVER had. Doesn't taste artificially or too sugary. I like being able to actually taste the tea. I would travel just for that tea again. Service: Remember it is a mom and pop shop so there was only 1/2 servers it seemed for the entire place. With that being said, they came over frequently and we usually made eye contact when we needed something. If you've made this far, i definitely recommend for you to check this place out!

Drunken noodles
S N.

I used to go to Ruan Thai years ago when they were very small space, and I remember it was really good. Years later I ordered for pickup drunken noodles and first I thought they gave me the wrong order.... I never had drunken noodles with ketchup like taste with mushy tomato.. I added fish sauce with chili to fix the taste but unfortunately I couldn't finish it.. So maybe this is a different recipe. Maybe if you like sweet side with tomato sauce you might enjoy it. But I warn you this is very different drunken noodles from many places you normally get.

I literally just ate my first bite 10 min ago and am coming here to write how good it is. The best drunken noodles you will find in the area!

Had take out because I had limited time to dine. Food had no favor and was watery. Don't waste your money. Staff was friendly enough

The restaurant is fairly small, but there are many tables for guests. That said, even on a mid-week evening, the place was busy with a brief wait. We ordered the steamed dumplings for an appetizer and they were very enjoyable. For the main course, I ordered Dancing Pork Belly and my partner ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice with chicken. I wasn't sure what to expect as I've never had the dish. The food was served hot and although the meal wasn't spicy, it was tasty. The fried rice was also good. My food was not spicy as I had requested. There are different levels and since it was my first time, I chose the almost spiciest level. It could have been hotter for me. I ended up having to add my own pepper at home! The flavors were good. the portion size was fair. I won't say it was the best Thai I've had. I made an online order through their website and got the pad see-ew (beef-mild) $14.95, pad Thai (chicken-mild) $14.95, and the mango red curry (chicken-medium) $15.95. - The pad see-ew was really good and is easily in the top 2 for best pad see-ew I've had. - The pad Thai was a new experience for me as it was my first EVER experience trying it but it was just alright (thought it would've been better). Also the chicken portions were significantly less than I expected. - The mango red curry was a dish I had HIGH expectations for but it fell flat. The "mango curry" taste and flavor were underwhelming even with the addition of the mango peices. Overall, this spot has some pretty decent Thai. The pad see-ew is THE highlight and the other 2 dishes could've been better. If you're in the area searching for Thai then this is a solid spot for your Thai cravings.

Dipping it in the massaman curry that came with it was a delightful experience. I don't regularly eat massaman curry, but it hit the spot! Spring rolls ($8): very typical. Like four in an order. Cool with the sauce but I make my own lol. Overall, standard. Tom yum with shrimp ($8): so freaking good. You get to pick your protein. It was really good. Thai iced teas ($4): so good. RICE PLATTER (3 ITEMS) - 15.75 + rendang, grilled chicken, sweet & spicy anchovies and peanut Not a whole lot of "items" but an overwhelming amount of rice. The beef rendang was a bit oily, but flavorful and tender. The grilled chicken was incredibly dry and unappetizing. I loved the sweet & spicy anchovies and peanut, which was perfectly seasoned and crunchy. Overall, disappointed with the lack of protein. In this economy, the pricing was relative affordable with most entrees under $20. My friend got the NASI KUNING, which was only a few bucks more than my rice platter, but it had a lot more food and variety. The turmeric rice was fragrant, like a spiced jasmine-flavored rice. The rice chips she didn't want (that I helped eat) were great.

I was torn, so I ended up ordering small plates and a Thai iced tea. Thai tea: on the sweeter side, but very good - more orange than red or brown.IYKYK Crab and shrimp dumplings: good. I think I would've preferred them with soy sauce instead of the sweeter sauce, but these were good. Great the next day, too. Chive pancake: pretty good. This was my first time getting an entire order for myself and I don't think I would do it again because it's not my thing, but I won't knock it simply because it's not my preference. Tom ka: this soup was so damn good. It says spicy, but it really wasn't that spicy. However, it was incredibly flavorful and addicting. I probably could've had just one huge bowl of that. They charged one dollar extra for shrimp, which I didn't love, but it was worth it. There were three pretty good size shrimp in that one little bowl. For everything pictured, I think I paid like 32 or $35. Honestly, not bad. The service was very attentive and the restaurant was clean.

We each had the soup, which was seasoned well and had mushrooms and tender chicken. A decent soup. Not the best I've had, but good, and impressive as an accompaniment with the $12.95 lunch special. Several people in the restaurant had salads in front of them - the salads all looked good and were a nice size, with lettuce and carrot. I got the green curry with veggies. I was impressed by the amount and variety of veggies - green and red pepper, mushrooms, carrots and broccoli. The green curry sauce was spicy, but not overpowering. The rice that came with it was steamed white rice (which I'm thinking was over steamed, because it seemed to have absorbed a lot of water and was really boring). Unfortunately, the curry sauce, which was good, couldn't overcome the boringness of the rice. So instead of mixing the curry sauce in with the rice and eating it, I left about half the rice. It might make sense to opt for the brown rice, although it costs extra and might have the same issue depending on how it's prepared. My partner got the Pad La Pow with pork. They said it was very good, but not spicy as advertised. (It's advertised as having two stars of spiciness - the most on the menu). I'll try the place again. The soup was decent with a good amount of chicken, and the green curry was good with lots of veggies. Although I'll probably try something different to avoid the bland rice. The place is very nice inside. The server was excellent. We were seated next to a group where one of the individuals spoke very loudly, and the server came over discretely and asked if we'd like to move, which we did. And his service for the rest of the meal was very attentive (i drink a lot of water, and I judge a lot of service by how many times my water glass gets refilled - great job today) and friendly. The price point for the lunch special - $12.95, is excellent.
