I was so excited to try this place after reading all the positive reviews. I don't know what happened... If I went on an off day or something, but my experience was awful. I ordered the crab Rangoon and chicken pad Thai. The crab Rangoon had a curry twist, which though unexpected was not bad! Not my favorite, but I'd probably give them another try. It was the Pad Thai that made my stomach turn; I don't think I've ever tasted anything so unpleasant such as this. I don't know what happened... But the dish came out dry and crusty, lacking of all flavor with the exception of cayenne pepper, which was way overwhelming. I took two bites and had to throw it away. I never waste food! But it was not edible. I'd like to think they were having an off day, so I'd probably try this place again, but maybe this time order in and not do takeout. The server is quick to the table with menus. Have been here before and the Thai spicy recipes are hot so be warned if you jump to level 10 on spicy your lips will tingle. Ordered two dishes with spice level number one (mildest). Waitress first brought the Tom Kha soup which we tasted, and both my wife and I immediately declared it was far too spicy. Our waitress then, instead of apologizing or offering to lessen the heat , insisted that it was definitely the mildest level, had no pepper in it, could not be altered, and that since we were wasting it, we'd have to pay for it. We were dumbstruck but remained calm......she then brought the second dish, pad thai, also number one spice level, and it was both tasty AND perfectly non-spicy! When she again raised the issue of the spice level of the soup, she told us 'it must be due to the outdoor heat' (it was a relatively warm day, but we're from So Cal, so.....). This little restaurant is truly a hidden gem. The atmosphere is always clean, family staff is so very friendly & food is phenomenal. I have worked my way down the menu & there's nothing I haven't liked. The rice, the pad thai, crispy duck, appetizers, everything! You can spice it up to your liking but be cautious. Quaint, clean and well maintained. Top notch personalized service. They adjusted the heat in the recipes for each of the persons in our party. The food was made fresh, had unquestionable flavor and a wonderful variety of choice with an inclusion of Japanese selections to fill it out. Looking for vegetarian food in Licking County that isn't fries or a salad might be more difficult than spotting a yeti at Black Hand Gorge. My better half is frequently scared to dip into unknown places and sample their vegetarian wares. I get to be the guinea pig ALL THE TIME. Licking County vegetarians I did this for you. Dump that plate of iceberg in the trash and throw the fries out the window there is actual edible vegetarian food. IT'S THAI AT THAT! I have an unhealthy addiction to Pad See Ew but I took a recommendation from an employee there. I mean, if I am a guinea pig I might as well go in completely blind. I don't even know what I ate but it was delicious. I went back the next week with my better half and had the Pad See Ew and it was fantastic. I was told the entire menu can be made vegetarian. This place is the real thing. If you are looking for the Hipster's trendy Thai place where you pretend you actually know something about Thai food and sit around eating egg rolls, this is not for you. Though I live in Columbus, I am willing to drive all the way to Newark just for a bowl of their Tom Yum Noodle. If you like spicy things and think you can handle it, be sure to ask for their dishes "Thai Hot" otherwise you may only get "Ohio Hot". They put a scale on the menu of mild, medium, hot, and very hot, but if you look like a wuss and order something that most boring central ohio customers order (like pad thai or fried rice) then you will probably get what you are asking for. Don't be your own worst enemy when ordering. I have been going here for six years now. My first visit was one week after they opened. I commiserated about this with the family that owns Royal Thai on my trip there tonight. They are charming, and if you are curious about Thai food and want something exciting, just ask and they will amaze your taste buds. When you try their food you will be instantly transported to Thailand. I would also recommend the Thai Tea here. If you live, work, or are passing through the area, this is a must on a list of culinary adventures. read more

UPDATE: Since this place changed ownership at the end of 2013, it has gone to crap. While the rehab of the place is lovely and the new ownership is accommodating to vegan requests, there are two main problems in my view. 1) The new owner bad mouths the previous owner, which I find reprehensible and a really big turn-off. In addition, the claims made by the new owner against the old are patently false. 2) The food is no longer very good. Is it still the best food in the Heath/Newark area? Probably (let's face it-- there is little worth ingesting in the area). But, it is NOT at all like the original Royal Thai. The food is lacking depth of flavor and strength of spicing, doesn't taste very fresh-- sauces for instance do not appear to be homemade, and the profiles are all wrong. I used to frequent Royal Thai, but those days are over. I have visited the place under new ownership twice and have no desire to return. My mother, sister, and other family members who also used to frequent the restaurant have not returned, based on my report. I am SO SAD that my Royal Thai is gone! --------- REVIEW of the ORIGINAL ROYAL THAI (posted 2012): Absolutely delicious, authentic Thai food served with love. This little family owned and operated establishment serves food that is tasty and well-seasoned, unlike any other Thai I have ever had. It blows away all of the Columbus Thai restaurants. Truly the best in Central Ohio. If you do not like flavor, you should probably skip this and go elsewhere because everything here is aggressively and appropriately seasoned with fresh Thai herbs and spices, hand roasted chili peppers, and painstakingly homemade sauces. The menu offers extensive choices, and nearly everything can be made vegetarian upon request. There are daily specials not on the regular menu as well. The owners are very accommodating and will fill special requests if they possibly can. My favorites are the fried yams with homemade sweet ginger dipping sauce, the vegetable steamed dumplings (not on the menu yet-- you'll have to ask if they are available), the Tom Yum Noodle Soup, the Tom Ka soup, Lab, green papaya salad, and my standard "go-to" dish, the Pad Ke Mao. For dessert, the mango sticky rice cannot be beat! Oh, yeah-- don't forget the iced lemongrass tea, when available! It is a deliciously sweetened infusion of fresh lemongrass. This is one of only two places that I have ever been able to get my food ACTUALLY spicy, as requested! Today was my 2nd visit to this small unassuming restaurant. Both visits were memorable. This is a small family run Thai restaurant. Don't expect fancy decor but expect excellent Thai cuisine. The place is also very clean and comfy. Last visit I had the drunken noodles that was expertly prepared. Tonight I enjoyed the Massamsan curry. It was excellent. The owner is personable and stops by the table to make sure your dining experience is good. She takes great pride in the food. Dinners are reasonable $12 - $15 with large servings. This is by far one of THE best Thai establishments I have found on these shores. It is not Thai-American cuisine, but instead authentic using the real flavors and spices that you only find in Asia. We were pleasantly surprised, and have it on our list of go-to restaurants now. We had sweet and sour chicken, panang curry with chicken, vegetable spring rolls, and Thai iced tea. It was very nice inside and the lady at the front of the house was very friendly. I ordered panang curry with chicken and drunken noodles with beef, to go. The cost of just two items...$28+. Crazy!!!! The panang had a nice creamy, spicy taste but I've never had green beans in my panang before. The drunken noodles dish wasn't that great. The beef was tough and again, more green beans. They clearly use them in a lot of dishes as a filler. This was a bit too expensive, even for thai food. I think I'd pass on this next time I'm in town. read more

I used to come here when it was the old owners and it's still just as yummy as before! Love the new owners, too. This place doesn't have a lot of seating so I would recommend calling in before. The food is phenomenal so don't let the seating situation discourage you if it's busy. I got a seven (heat level) which was spicy even for my tolerance but the flavor was so worth it. Pad Thai, Tom Gai, and Red Curry are my favorites, but honestly you could hit a dart on this menu and be pleased. The portions are huge as well. My mother, brother, daughter, and bff all ate until we felt like glutinous pigs and still had to take half our plates home! The service is great, too, the owners make you feel like family. If you were to go be prepared to be addicted. I prefer to go during lunch hours because prices are cheaper, but the quality of food is always the same.
