I was craving some Thai food on a recent business trip and this place had some good reviews. This place is in the Kroger parking lot and is sparsely decorated. I was quickly greeted And presented with a menu. I ordered A spicy Panang curry and Shrimp Shumai. The Panang was extremely watery and had about 5 pieces of chicken in it, and was mostly carrots. Unassuming locally-owned Thai restaurant in Heath, Ohio with amazing food. We don't eat out often but, if we do, this is one of two local places we enjoy and have never been disappointed. I usually get the Pad Thai with shrimp (pictured) or Massaman Curry with chicken and my partner gets Chicken Fried Rice or Lo Mein. The portions are hefty - the shrimp are huge and the Pad Thai comes with 10. I've never had so much shrimp included at any other Thai restaurant. It's cooked perfectly and the flavor is excellent. I enjoy spicy foods but the medium is almost too much for me so I stick with mild. My partner doesn't like spicy food and orders no spice. The service is top notch, too - the woman working in the front is very attentive and polite. read more

The kind of Siberia you read about in books but never expect to stand in -- an infinite horizon of snow and silence that makes you realize the world doesn't care whether you are alive or not. I was there without a purpose, which is to say, without a direction. That is, until the thought came to me, sudden and absolute: There is Thai food in Ohio. The idea was absurd, almost laughable -- until it wasn't. It became a drumbeat in my mind, a summons I could not ignore. Every step I took from that moment forward was guided by the invisible, intoxicating promise of Pad Thai served under fluorescent lights in the American Midwest. The journey north was long enough that time itself became untrustworthy. In the polar regions, the sun refused to set and refused to rise, and the world was nothing but white -- until the white moved. Polar bears appeared, not as predators, but as trial-by-combat emissaries from whatever higher power governs irrational quests. They gave chase, their roars tearing through the wind, and I ran in boots stiff with frost, clutching nothing but my passport and the belief that Ohio was waiting. Weeks bled into months. I passed through landscapes where human life seemed impossible, and yet my thoughts returned to noodles. Not survival, not warmth -- just noodles. I began to suspect I had invented Ohio entirely, and that my mind had conjured it as a final mirage before surrender. But then, there it was. The restaurant stood in a strip of forgotten concrete, the kind of place where the only color came from flickering neon. Inside, the air was thick with the sweet-sour scent of fish sauce and the faint chemical tang of industrial floor cleaner that had long since lost its battle with the grime. The tables were mismatched, the chairs wobbled, and the lighting was the color of a tired cigarette filter. Half the clientele were local homeless men and women, hunched over plates as they drifted in and out of narcotic half-dreams, their eyes clouded with morphine and amphetamines. They spoke in slow, looping murmurs, sometimes to each other, sometimes to no one at all. Their movements were loose, unhurried, as though the boundaries between waking and sleeping, life and afterlife, had blurred into one long, slow sway. Far from detracting from the experience, their presence seemed to complete it. They were the chorus to my epic -- the weary, wandering souls of this place, moving like the lively dead, their conversations slurring into something almost like music. I ate in silence among them, an interloper in their strange, suspended world. And the Pad Thai? It was... fine. Not transcendent, not terrible. Warm, filling, unremarkable. After crossing ice floes, surviving bears, and trudging through wind that could strip the skin from your face, I found myself at the end of all things with nothing more than an ordinary plate of noodles. I am pretty obsessed with Tom Yum soup. I am sort of serious about it when I order two extra large portions. I'll likely eat on that for lunch for days. The family seemed super nice, but they refused to make my Thai tea without ice, even though I wanted it for the next day, and then the soup just... ugh. There was literally nothing in it. Mostly broth, and it wasn't spicy enough for me. I had been passing this place and waiting to try it for awhile, but overall the prices were high and the food we got in return was just not worth it. I really liked the sauce that came with them. The pineapple chicken fried rice was decent. It would have been so good if there were more cashews and pineapple. I really liked the drunken noodles. They were flavorful. I did not like the pad Thai. It was definitely my least favorite dish. The staff was nice and it was easy to get the takeout order. Years ago this place was famous for having aggressively spicy food--to the extent that it felt like a gag to trick unsuspecting diners. Fun to see reactions but owners weren't catering to local taste. Place is under new ownership and it seems like they e adapted too much. Dishes seemed to skimp on Thai-specific ingredients like fish sauce, coconut milk, and even papaya in a papaya salad in favor of more American standards like lime juice, iceberg lettuce, etc. If you are intimidated by Thai food you may still like this place but if you want the taste of lemongrass, coconut milk, fish sauce, etc., there are better options. read more

This is a great little no frills Thai hot spot. The place is small with minimal decor but very clean. They sell on flavor and they have that in spades. I love Thai food and their massaman curry can stand up against Thai you'd get in Chicago or NYC. I had the 4 out of 10 and it was plenty hot without being overwhelming. Royal Thai is the best restaurant in Heath. It has a good Thai menu. The food is actually spicy. It sucks going to places that are supposed to be spicy but they aren't. That won't be a problem here. I had the pad prick khing with tofu as the protein choice. It has a choice of beef, chicken, of tofu for many items. The entrees are usually about $9 to $12 but these are worthy of the price. It should be noted the food is hotter than most Thai places you've been at. The spice levels they have are much higher. A spice at level one is like sriracha, not so bad. The spice at level seven makes a ghost pepper seem like an icicle. It can get even hotter. The spice at level ten is even more ridiculous. If you want burning hot food go to Royal Thai. It offers spice on the side so you can adjust it. This is recommended if you haven't been there. read more

We decided to try Royal Thai because of the high rating on yelp. We ordered the Yaki Soba noodles with chicken. The dish was so salty it was inedible. The wait staff was very kind and offered to make another dish that is less salty. She stated they used a chicken powder to flavor the noodles. So we agreed to allowing another one to be made for us. We heard a microwave being used and some stir frying. The next batch of noodles were bland but the chicken itself was extremely salty. I asked if the chicken was premade and was told that nothing is premade and that the chicken was steamed. I assume the chicken had been boiled in a chicken bouillon and stored in the freezer and then heated by microwaved for each dish. I cannot say for certain this is what is happening but it definitely seems like it. Otherwise we ordered a chicken egg roll and crab Rangoon and both were very good. I will not be going back here. We ended up not having to pay for one noodle dish. read more
