I've been a lover of good Indian food since forever. Both my parents lived in India, and I've enjoyed the good, the bad, and the outstanding both in this country and abroad--mainly England, which is home to far more Indian cuisine than here. To my great surprise, Royal Spice, at least the evening I was there, is squarely in the outstanding category. I stopped in on a whim, on my way back (the long way) from Keene one late afternoon. Since it was just me, I only sampled one dish, the Chettinad chicken, and garlic cilantro naan. The flavor profile is from Southern India, specifically the Tamil Nadu region. This area has a rich cuisine centered around coconut and tamarind and a unique assortment of spices (being from the hottest area of India, the spices can be eye-watering, but here they ask you for your tolerance). The Chettinad had a wonderfully unique flavor profile, absolutely delicious. Even the naan was perfect: fluffy and crispy at the same time, loaded with fresh garlic and cilantro. This spot has become a normal request when I visit my family in the area. The food is really excellent and the owner is warm, welcoming, and clearly cares about the business. We stopped in and ordered take-out one night over the holidays, and they made us feel right at home while we waited for the food to get prepared. The people that work there are very warm and friendly and want to make sure everything is OK. Great service as well. The food is authentic Indian food...no nonsence here. The Sunday buffet is getting better and better. My kids love it too ! And they have had plenty of Indian food, from New Jersey to LA. Small dining room is deceiving, it can actually accommodate 25-30 customers, but fear not, there is a second dining room that can easily accommodate 100 +/-. Went to lunch here today with a friend who is a big fan of Indian cuisine, having had it literally all over the world. He did the ordering. We started with a Taj Mahal Indian beer, one of several selections of imported and domestic beers and wines offered. We had the vegetable samosa as our appetizer: crispy pastries filled with potato, peas and spices. NOT GREASY! Had to emphasize this point, had them in other restaurants and thought they should be called "greasy devils." Then it was off to two of his favorites that quickly became mine as well: Mutter Paneer - Paneer, peas, tomato based sauce, Garam masala, spices. (Paneer is a type of cheese.). Then Chicken Korma - grilled chicken breast chucks cooked in rich cashew cream sauce. We each had a side of flavorful rice and shared the freshly made naan. At my friends suggestion (am I glad that he did) we each had an order of rice pudding for dessert. It tasted to cardamon, rose water, nuts and saffron. Although I have never visited India, I have been to "Indian" restaurants. After this feast, I feel that others were imposters while this was authentic on many levels. Really delicious Indian cuisine. My favorites are the butter chicken and garlic cilantro naan. They will accommodate spice levels for sensitive palates. The service was okay, this establishment clearly operates with a skeletal crew. The atmosphere was also okay. I understand the location is not ideal, but it is conveniently located right off of route 12 in Troy. Small Indian restaurants are hiy and miss, but this was a hit. Walked in and there was a large family having dinner, we got a table and then it was so busy they had people waiting outside for a table! Then there was the take away orders. As busy as it was the staff remained friendly, happy, and calm. No yelling in the kitchen, no raised voices. We had vegetable samosas, delicious and obviously homemade. The tamarind sauce was sweet and pleasant, but to me the star was the creamy mint sauce ... cool and refreshing. Mango lahsi made it all nice and tasty. Lamb biryani for me, paneer Tikka masala for my wife, naan to share. So good! The riata with the biryani was cool to offset the spice (we got mild and it was a good choice). The paneer was in a sauce that was amazing ... could be the best Tikka masala I have had. Clean, reasonably priced, friendly, comfortable. We will be back! read more

We had seen an ad for the restaurant in The Keene Shopper and I was eager to try it out. We ate in and told the server it was our first time there and we were new to Indian cuisine. They were very helpful and we had a most delicious meal. I had Butter Chicken and it was to die for, in my opinion. My second order was a take out order. Everything was ready on time and very hot and well wrapped for the drive home. Again, I was not disappointed. Surprisingly delightful Indian cuisine in an unassuming location. There's a wide variety of vegetarian options, fantastic naan, as well as a few gluten free and vegan selections available. Others in the party had butter chicken (reported as excellent) and shrimp Goan curry (deep and bright sauce). Have to say, cannot agree with some of these negative reviews. I might agree there has been some service issues as help is hard to find in Keene however the food here is nothing less than amazing. We are avid fan's of Indian food and find this offering as good as it gets. Try the rice, simply so flavorful with cumin seeds! All dishes consistently flavorful and pleasing. My favorite is the Tandoori dish chicken tikka, crazy good. Ok all the Korma dishes delicious as well... And, the chef produces probably some of the most tasty Italian dishes for those who would rather! You need to try! read more

I have been observing this restaurant since they opened in Troy, NH recently, seems there were always cars there. Having never had Indian cuisine I was curious. We decided to try it and what a wonderful surprise. My delight started with the friendliness of the staff. I arrived to pick up our order and was greeted enthusiastically. Our order was ready and I was waited on immediately. The restaurant was very clean and they do have indoor as well as outdoor seating. The prices are very reasonable. Some of the best food I have eaten, bar none. The eat-in area is on the smaller side but Ive noticed many of the tastiest restaurants are like that, and I don't mind. It shouldn't be a problem unless you have a large party of people. The tables were well set, the place is super clean top to bottom, and the server was very helpful with suggestions. The serving sizes were good but I would recommend ordering plenty of food ...bc you are going to want plenty of leftovers. I ate half of mine right after I got home from the restaurant! I have wanted to try this restaurant for the last year but only had the chance recently. I have previously had great Indian food made by my friends, average Indian food from Wegmans takeout, and a lousy Indian buffet in DC. So I had some concerns, and no experts to accompany me. I selected almost everything from the buffet and surprisingly enjoyed it. The fried vegetables were nicely spiced, and the dal was well done. The korma and chicken tikka were spicier but not intolerably so. It would have been nice to have slightly smaller pieces of chicken and potato. The rule of thumb is to have mouthful sized pieces. The buffet is a good way to decide if you like Indian flavors in general and if you like this Indian restaurant. Bring an Indian friend if you can--they will know if the chef isn't getting it right read more

They are open in their new location in Troy and the food is delicious as ever. It's set up like a take-out pizza or Chinese place with only a small indoor area. Even if you eat there, they are using plastic plates and cutlery and serving dishes which is not a downside I personally can overcome (due to my strong distaste for adding to the landfill). So, I won't be back until or if they change that. We got our food and brought to Granite Roots Brewery where we got even more un-recyclable plastic. We have gone here about 10 times total. If you place an order to go it is guaranteed to be missing at least two items. Mix that with the inexperienced wait staff and that is what you call Bland Spice. I echo the review before. The biryani is in fact, not good at all. However, the curries and appetizers we've gotten there have always been very good and the mango lassis are delicious. I'm no Indian food aficionado, but I have eaten a lot of it, and know bad curry when I have it. My only complaint is that when you say "spicy" they don't really take you seriously.. The chicken tiki masala was absolutely delicious. My order was made right. No complaints here... and if im just walking around I'll order some naan to go and nibble as I walk around. The atmosphere was quiet they had music on but it wasn't blaring. I didn't have a long wait and the food looked and smelled delicious from other tables. The food is excellent. But management is terrible. The wait staff is always changing and the place is untidy at best. Last time we were there dirty plates were left on the tables all evening. By the time we left the place looked like a scene from Dante's inferno. The restaurant is potentially beautiful but the decoration is ugly at best. Why is there now a TV in the restaurant? We are in Keene to visit our grandson at Keene State. We love Indian restaurants, especially in college towns. We really enjoyed our meals. My husband had his usual, Tandoori Chicken and said it was wonderful. I had my usual, Chicken Tikki Masala and loved the dish especially the sauce which we enjoyed with our garlic and chive Naan. The chef blends the spices nicely in all that we tried, including the complimentary onion chutney, tamarind sauce and mint sauce to go with the papadum.
