It's so nice inside, clean, the staff are super nice. The food though! Show stopper! The garlic naan was so warm, flavorful and delicious! Make sure to get a side of it! The chicken tikka masala was tender and the sauce that mine was in was bursting with flavor and just amazing! What's amazing about Indian food is there's so many different seasoning and everything is made fresh that when you eat it, it's like a flavor explosion happening! Amazing Jem! We had the buffet and there were a lot of food options. Everything delicious, a true food adventure! We sat at their small bar and had delicious cocktails - Mango margarita and Leche martini. Buffet consisted of traditional dishes, like tiki marsala, Tandoori chicken, an amazing goat dish, and a lot of vegetarian options. Amazing menu with interesting choices (I got a fabulous Nepalese eggplant dish, whose name I forget) as well as the standard items that my husband prefers. Desi Bar & Grill opened on Chandler Street in the former Black Sheep Bah-Bah-Q & Kitchen space. This Indian & Nepalese restaurant offers a daily buffet for weekday lunch ($14.95 plus tax)* and weekend brunch ($15.95 plus tax)* plus a regular menu serving a variety of Indian & Nepalese dishes and appetizers including vegetable and meat options. The regular menu pricing is moderate high. The place has a small bar with seating up front, a waiting section with soft couch seating, and a long dining room with booths and tables to the right and back including the buffet setup area. They also offer takeout. I stopped here twice over the weekend. On the first visit, it was late Saturday night and I decided to stop at Desi for takeout. I ordered the Fish Biryani ($24.95 plus tax) and was given a glass of water while I waited. My food was all set in about 15 minutes and I was also given a quick tour of the buffet setup area and the labels for the dishes that are on the buffet. It sounded very appetizing, so I decided that I would return the next day for brunch. I enjoyed the Fish Biryani at home which had tender pieces of salmon filet and spicy rice with a side container of creamy yogurt sauce. On the next day, I stopped by Desi again for the brunch buffet around 2pm. The place was still fairly busy and I was seated within a couple minutes in a booth. The buffet offerings change daily and on my visit they were offering around 25 items to choose from including tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, goat biryani, vegetable chetinad, aloo gogi, paneer chilli. basmati rice, vegetable samosas, chicken pakoras, steamed chicken momos, dal makhani (creamy lentil soup), chutneys, tamarind, mixed greens, lettuce, fresh fruit, lemon wedges, raita, gulab jamun, rasmalai, hot milk tea, and a variety of Shahi Kulfi fruit bars from the freezer. Hot naan (regular or garlic) is included and brought over to your table. Some of the buffet items were initially cleaned out, but staff was replenishing food on the buffet as the place was still busy and a few more customers were still arriving. The food I had was not too spicy and very tasty with nice flavors. I made a few trips to the buffet and really enjoyed the chicken tikka masala, chicken momos, vegetable chetinad, samosas, and gulab jamun balls. The naan was a bit overdone, flaking on the top and smothered in a butter. After I had enough, the check for one was presented which came out to $16.95 with tax and before tip, a very good deal to sample a variety of foods in one visit. The service here was good and my water glass was topped off throughout my 50 minute dining visit. I would come back again for the buffet since it offered a good variety of food and was priced reasonably. read more

Came here because I was pumped for an all-you-can-eat Indian food buffet!! The lunch buffet is super cheap (~$10 per person) so great for people wanting to get full without spending a lot of money. I think the food reflected this pricing because it was kind of mid. There would be random bones in the chicken tikka masala, or whole chunks of star anise in other dishes which made the experience not as enjoyable. The food is a bit too greasy as well. Selection of food is okay. I also feel like the quality of their ingredients isn't great. But honestly you can't really complain because the cost is super affordable. Not saying the food is terrible; it did still satisfy my craving for Indian food- especially the saag paneer. I do love the unlimited chai which is self serve. It's hot and you add your own sugar and cream into it. I should've taken a picture of the inside of the restaurant, but overall it's pretty basic with not any noteworthy decorations. The staff were nice though. Overall, this restaurant's price point is the star but other than that, don't come here expecting the best Indian food buffet. Wow! We were pleasantly surprised to find this place. In town for a hockey game and all of us felt like Indian food. My kids and wife ordered paneer dishes and all were perfectly spiced. I got the tandoori mixed grill. Awesome that it comes with a side of sauce. I got mine spicy and it was! Huge portion as well. Service was attentive and the place was comfortable and clean. Welcome! We needed you. The lunchtime buffet has samples of so many great dishes that vary from day to day, and includes drinks, desserts, and accompanying sauces at a very reasonable price. Lunchtime and evening, there is also a full menu, and OMG, the flavors are off the chart amazabobs! I have not tried the whole menu yet, but my favorites so far are the coconut chicken, butter chicken, and Aloo Palak. The breads are right out of the oven--OH, my! My wife and I went there for the lunch buffet and our impression was good though not excellent. It had very limited selection on the sauce but only 2 with one on lamb, which I don't eat. The other one was butter chicken. It was fine but not above average. They also stopped replenishing food (everything) after 45 min the buffet started even though a few new customers joined. A customer ended up specifically asking the wait staff to do so. I thought that was too frugal for the customers. Especially the ones who went after the first 45 min. The two waitresses were courteous. No complain except for the lack of food replenishment. The restaurant itself was clean and tidy. Tables were set with more than reasonable space. I went here with a party of 5 because it was centrally located for everyone. From outside it looks like a dump, but inside is nice. The food was pretty good and so was the service. 2 guests got the buffet and the others ordered from the menu. I paid the bill. I always give at least 20% tip and usually closer to 25%, but since almost half the group got the buffett, I gave a little less, just under 20%. Still more than 15%. I just got my Credit Card statement and they charged my card $6 more than I put on the receipt. I've never had that happen before. It's just $6, but this is a form of theft. They had no right and you don't even find out until you get your statement. We planned on this being our meeting spot for future get togethers with my sister and my niece because we liked the food, but after this, I'll never go there again. read more

Entrees come with basmati rice. My husband got a mango lassi, which came in a pint-sized glass. It was top notch. My husband said the food was as good as anything he's eaten in the UK. You can choose from four spice levels to tailor to your taste. They also have a buffet lunch from 11:30 am to 3pm daily. The service was friendly and attentive. This was my first visit, and I'm thoroughly impressed! The service was excellent, and the food was absolutely delicious.

My meal at Desi Bar & Grill was a delight! I tried the vegetable pakoras, bhindi masala (roasted okra, onions, and bell pepper), goat curry, chapati (unleavened whole wheat flat bread), and masala chai. I thoroughly enjoyed every single item. Everything tasted fresh and wholesome. The chai comes unsweetened with some packets of sweetener on the side to adjust to your preference. It's creamy and the finish has a nice black tea bitterness. The pakoras were brought to the table along with a green herby chutney (presumably mint, but I forgot to ask), a tamarind chutney, and an onion chutney. All of the sauces, in every combination I tried, paired nicely with the pakoras and provided a distinct taste experience. The bhindi masala (roasted okra) had all of the rich intrinsic sweetness you would expect from nicely roasted vegetables. I personally am a fan of okra no matter how it's cooked, but I can say that this version is especially easy to like because the dry cooking method means that it doesn't have any of the sliminess that you get when okra is cooked in the presence of water. The goat curry comes in a brown gravy that was nice to mop up with rice or bread. The meat was tender but still had a nice chew. There will be some bones, but that seems pretty normal for goat stews. For entrees Desi offers four spice level options: mild, medium, spicy, and very spicy. I quite enjoy chili heat, so to get a feeling for what those spice levels would mean in practice I decided to try medium spice for the okra and spicy for the goat. The medium level on the okra was quite mild for me. The spicy level in the goat curry provided a comfortable and lively warmth, especially at the back of the tongue and back of the throat. I will probably try the very spicy level next time. For my housemate, I also grabbed a takeout order of mild chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. We both agree that the flavor of the tikka masala is good, **but take note that even a mild order of tikka masala will have fair amount of heat to it**. Presumably the spice blend for the tikka masala base recipe itself has some chili in it. I think it's quite nice, but my housemate can't tolerate any chili heat at all, so it turns out I'll be eating the leftovers of that as well. (Sad for her, but totally fine by me! :)) The garlic naan tastes great! Good fresh-baked texture with some pillowy bits and some cracker-like shattering bits. On future visits, I am curious to try more of the items on the menu, particularly the Nepali specialties like the momo dumplings and the Rayo Ko Saag (mustard greens cooked with spices). Fantastic Indian food that is reasonably priced. We did takeout and everything was delicious. There was an issue with the online ordering system- didn't get notified that the food was ready for pickup- but the restaurant called me and even offered to deliver the food. I was presented with a lovely drink when I arrived and apologies from the staff. We have been waiting for them to open because we love Indian food and this restaurant did not disappoint. Tried their weekend buffet on Sunday Feb 2. Rather bland and within 30 minutes of opening the Biryani was dry. Tandoori was ok, butter chicken had gravy no chicken, baingan Bharta was so so. Chili chicken was probably the only dish I will give satisfactory scores. Saag Chana and mixed vegetables was decent They would get better scores if they served the naan fresh instead of hard pieces on the buffet. Kheer was fine and masala chai needed some masala.
