What happened to this place? It was always the stop to get higher than usual quality Chinese food. The prices were always higher than other places, but I didn't mind splurging once in a while because the food was so good. Fast forward , went this week and spent $90 on several dishes hoping to serve as meals for us for a few days. It was terrible. The dumplings were mostly dough, ate one and tossed the rest. The chicken dish was so bland , that even after trying to doctor it up myself , also went in the garbage. Hubbies pork dish was no better, the pork had a rubber consistency and the sauce was bland, joined the others in the trash. The egg rolls were excellent as was the wonton soup, but still doesn't make up for the rest of the order. Sorry but won't be returning. Sad because we have had so many good meals in the past. I used to absolutely LOVE royal. Unfortunately, the quality has gone downhill consistently since COVID and it doesn't appear they have bounced back. I don't think I'll be returning. I've always been more than happy to pay a higher price compared to other local Chinese restaurants because of the spectacular quality, however. The price is now the same but with a subpar quality. Their sesame chicken-type dishes were always the best in town, super fresh and crispy with a uniquely good sauce. The past two times it's been nothing special, soft breading and not so fresh. The white rice has been hard/overcooked. Wonton noodles were not fresh. We ordered Mongolian Beef for $25 (significantly higher priced than other beef dishes) to only get about 80% onions. I would expect a bit more protein for the cost. read more

Kitchen staff backed up at 5:25pm and can't get food out in a reasonable time so you wait and wait and when the food does come it's awful. So very disappointing. Wait staff was nice enough but there was one googly-eyed guy that was flat out rude. read more

Excellent take away meal saturday May 31. Chicken Lo Mein freshly done. Snake Bite Chicken extra spicy, plentiful and super tasty. order again, ask for added vegetables. Best eggroll ever from RD and any other! Used to quibble about RD egg roll price but this is well worth. read more

While visiting my friend, they ordered takeout from Royal Dynasty. We ordered a bunch of items: wonton soup, pork dumplings, white rice, pork fried rice, plain lo mein noodles, orange chicken a pork dish that came with "pancake" wraps (reminded me of a Chinese soft taco). When my friend called in the order, she was told 30-40 minutes. Her husband went to pick it up at 40 minutes and had to wait ANOTHER HALF HOUR at the restaurant. As for the food, my wonton soup was great! I want to say the large container had 6 wontons and was $7. The orange chicken was good with a sweet sticky sauce that I was expecting. The lo mein noodles tasted "seafood-y" to me (probably due to an oyster sauce?? I'm not a seafood fan so I didn't care for the noodles). The pork fried rice was ok but SUPER oily. Like, 1/2 in of oil in the container... my friend assured me they have NEVER seen it like this before. Lastly, the "mystery" pork dish with the pancakes/wraps.. meh. I didn't care for it at all but they ordered 2 containers of it because they like it THAT much. Overall, everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. As for cost, I glanced at the receipt. Yowza... $80-something! (If you read this Samantha, thanks for dinner! I miss you already!) Ultimately, the time for the order was the main negative. First time writing a review and first time visiting this restaurant. I visited Royal Dynasty this past Friday, 8/1 and had a fantastic experience. This place had been recommended by numerous people over this last year. The food was hot, tasty and arrived promptly which I was worried about with a full dining area. The dishes were very plentiful and we had some leftover for the weekend. The dumplings were doughy like previous customers stated but still very good. Our waitress was very personable, friendly and I didn't see her without a smile once. Cute as a button and more places need that. The restaurant appeared to be clean with the exception of the glassware. Price seems reasonable for portion size 2 meals for $19-$26 is favorable. The fish tanks are a great touch. I highly recommend and will be back with new guests. read more

In the last year or so I have gotten the feeling this restaurant has two different kitchens in the rear. The food can be just a delight, as it has been for years, or really dreadful which is happening more and more often. Just when I decide not to return due to disappointment, a friend will want to go, I reluctantly agree and then have a great meal. Last night was not one of the great meals. I have never, ever seen such thick dough on a dumpling in my life and I am OLD. How does this happen? Is there any quality control? It was this absurd round thing that looked like a red bean paste dumpling. The center even looked like red bean paste and was just thoroughly ground up something porklike. No ground meat with shreds of vegetables clearly discernable, but just a round thing. The dough so overwhelmed the filling that the dough had to be discarded. The rest of the meal was about what you would find in a typical Chinese restaurant. Nothing stood out, but was entirely edible. I realize it is a little weird to freak out about a pork dumpling but, come on. We are talking about a mainstay of an American Chinese restaurant and they couldn't do it right last night. Not even close. Fortunately for the restaurant's sake, they have had an outstanding reputation for years and I'm sure that will carry them forward far into the future no matter what their standards. read more

Once upon a time I would have rated this five stars as easily the best Chinese food in Rochester. The staff was always great. Food always superb. We've been eating here or getting takeout for almost 15 years. We patronized this business throughout the pandemic happily and enjoyed their excellent food. In the past few months, they drastically changed the menu removing ALL of the items my family enjoys. We thought it was a fluke or they would go back. They haven't. When we got to the end of an order where literally EVERY item we requested was no longer there, a younger new person answering the phones told me "maybe you should try something new". They're right. Despite this restaurant being very close to our house we had never been here since our usual Chinese place is Chen Garden. I heard some positive talk about RD so we decided to give it a try on a recent Saturday evening. The decor is very nice though it is too brightly lit for my taste. Our server was super helpful and very friendly - she gave many good suggestions and answered all of our questions. I ordered a Zombie - it was just OK. Good flavor but a bit weak for a Zombie and a little pricey compared to the competition. We stepped out and ordered something different, the Shanghai noodles. It was a large serving and very good but it was somewhat plain in taste. We also ordered the sesame chicken as a comparison dish and I have to say I liked the flavor a lot - it had nice heat. The serving was very large though I would have liked more broccoli. The price seemed higher than my usual place but overall it was fair for what I got. I definitely would return but if I need a strong drink and a dark cave like experience I will go to my stand-by Chinese joint.... read more

I had called the day before to confirm the restaurant was going to be open and they were, for take out only, but OK. No suggestion for pre-order or other option but to order today. I call only to find that there orders were filled by Pre_Orders. What is that and why was it not suggested yesterday? would have been nice and I could have placed my family order then. So I'm updating to say that this isn't the same Royal Dynasty from the 90s and early 2000s.. Don't get me wrong the food is still good, but not great. The food is incredibly overpriced. I have to ask myself if the same people own it anymore. The food is so different in taste that they for sure do not have the same chef. I think I thought the same thing when I wrote my original review in 2016, but didn't want to admit to myself. I just wanted to hold on to the past of when they at one time had the best Chinese in Rochester..sadly those days are long gone. read more

We used to go here a few years back and it was excellent. I don't know what happened but the quality has plummeted. this is the second time in two months that we have gotten takeout. Oh my God. Horrible. My sesame beef tasted like it was old, like leftover old. Gristly and nasty. Though the sauce was delicious, it couldn't hide the extremely unpleasant texture of the meat. My husband's Royal Chicken was awful as well. The little crispy noodles that you get to dip in sauce were so stale they were chewy and there was no duck sauce to try and help redeem them. Honestly, the best part of the whole meal were the fortune cookies. The last time we came here, it was really bad but we figured everyone can have a bad day. This sealed the deal. Done. Things have really slipped on the last several years, except the prices. Our latest experience was last night. It started off with (literally) only a dab of mustard in the bowl. Maybe enough to dip one or two noodles in. Maybe. Then, when we asked for tea, we were told it's now $3.00, but it's unlimited. Seriously, charging for tea??!! All the food arrived room temperature. This is good Chinese. We got takeout so I cannot comment on the restaurant. My friend who picked up the food said it was nice inside. We ordered moo goo gain pan, Kung Pao chicken, two egg rolls, wonton soup and steamed rice. The next morning I felt like it all had too much salt but that's to be expected. All of it tasted good. Wow. I don't know what has gone on behind the scenes at this former 5-star Chinese restaurant, but they have gone from hero to zero over the past year. This restaurant has been our weekly go-to for at least 15 years. During the pandemic they stayed open and understandably went to curbside service only, their food was excellent as ever throughout and the owner himself would bring your food to the car and exchange a few words. But then... something happened. Just addressing the food and leaving aside the customer service, our last order, in June 2023, contained a Crab Rangoon appetizer that was not even recognizable as that dish, and a Chicken with Mixed Vegetables main that contained some of the chewiest, blandest boiled meat we have ever seen. Even the white rice was a fail, overcooked with some sort of spicy overtone. I mean, how can a Chinese restaurant get white rice wrong? I sincerely hope that these folks can get back to hanging Rochester's Choice awards on their wall as they did all through the 2000's-2010's, but we will not be there to see it as we are moving on. read more

Tonight dinner out was not a good experience. The food was mediocre, at best. We were given a drink menu which we ordered from. When the bill came we saw drinks were charged at more than shown on the menu. When we questioned the server, we were told that prices changed and it must be an old menu so we should speak with the manager. We did that and were told we were charged correctly and the menu was incorrect. At that point it became a matter of principle. If shown a price, that's what should be charged. Could they do that with food items? No one in our group will be going there again. read more

On my first trip to the royal dynasty I was underwhelmed. The food was not very good and the service was just mediocre. However, the problem arose when the bill came. The server informed us that she had given us an old drink menu. And we would have to pay the new prices.. We took issue with this and she referred to her manager. She told us the manager would be out when she had time. We decided it wasn't worth waiting for her yet. She did come to our table eventually and Told us her business problems that the new menus we're out and we would have to pay those prices. We disagreed with her, and she basically went off ina huff said she wasn't going to argue with us. Because the service wasn't extraordinary. We essentially took the difference in what we would have paid Out of the tip. I would not return, and someone needs to remind the staff that the customer is, if not always , generally right, and should be treated with a smile and polite consideration. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for years now and I love it! I have read the mixed reviews but I highly recommend you try it out for yourself. The duck sauce and soy sauce are homemade and a true treat. I tend to lean towards the beef and broccoli and I am just such a fan. I've had different meals, rice, lomein, soups, appetizers etc. Here and I have never complained. The service is impeccable and the staff are very knowledgeable. I went here for my birthday this year and the staff come out with a gong and special surprise. You can also bring store bought cakes inside the restaurant that they will cut and serve for you. Theres also a side room that can host events. I have 0 complaints about this restaurant, it is 100% a restaurant I will continue to go to forever. read more

Grabbed some take out from here to try it out. Calling in my order and paying over the phone is nice. Pick up was also easy, where a person asked for name and brought out order. For appetizers, I had crab rangoon and scallion pancakes. The crag rangoon dough/crust was very dense and made it chewy. The filing was warm, savory, and tasty. The scallion pancakes were meh; very thick and greasy. I'll admit, not a deal breaker but if that is how it is normally served, I'm not a fan. The salt and pepper chicken was very good. I'd definetly order it again but I'll maybe ask for more pepper (seasoning) when they make it. read more

It was a very enjoyable lunch with 2 exceptions.The lunch menu here is substantial and reasonably priced Choices include chicken ,beef,pork and seafood all iclude soup,egg roll and the entree with rice.Very generous and tasty.My only two complaints are that the complimentary crispy noodles were stale and mostly little broken pieces.The water here is awful.Strong tastes of chlorine or chemicals.Maybe a water treatment system is needed.The restaurant decor is sleek and Asian modern.Service was very good.The hostess was very pleasant.We will return. read more

Last nights choice to eat here was based on reviews and awards. I was disappointed as I looked forward to something special. The Kung Pao chicken was a huge mess. I always go when in town and find a nice, sit-down, Chinese restaurant rare these days. The take-out style is more popular, which makes this restaurant something to cherish. They start with free tea, noodles and sauces, which they have been doing forever and is a great start of the meal. The selection is good, vegetarian dishes are available, but the prices are a bit high. I got the subgum vegetables, which is a fresh veggie dish with tofu in a light sauce. So frustrated with this restaurant... it could be great, but the food quality is just average and the service is disinterested. For example, I called ahead to order some food for Pick-up at 6pm. When I arrived the young girl behind the counter started looking for my order. She then realized that it had never been brought back to the Kitchen. I was very tempted to walk out the front door and never come back, but the rest of my Family was waiting for dinner and only Chinese would do. So what I thought would be an in/out pick-up ended up taking 15-20min and there really was no sincere apology or any effort on the part of the staff to ease the frustration that was clearly spelled out all over my face and demeanor. When I was cashing out they simply said "thank you for your patience and please take some chopsticks."
