For the New Year's Eve Dinner we decided it was going to be a no fuss kind of meal. And it turned out to be a great decision. So we ordered take out from Hunan Garden. It is expensive but it's well worth it. I walked in and ordered our food and it was done within a 15-20 minute time frame. We brought it home and couldn't wait until dinner because it smelled so good so we had a late lunch. If your looking for something quick Chinese food is the way to go if you're into it. Hunan highlights include solid food, wide array of options, super affordable, and very generous portions. We ordered the lunch specials. Each included a main, rice and soup for under $9. We also ordered the tofu pad Thai to share. All was delicious, except I was not a fan of the fried rice. It tastes sort of like it looks - basic yellow rice. Love the variety of choices you get at Hunan Garden especially the Thai choices. This restriction was a favorite before COVID and then there was alittle struggle with the quality of the food. We decided to try them again recently and we were glad we did! My son loves the beef and broccoli. He loves the brown sauce that accompanies the tender thin sliced beef. We also got the Phat Phet that is a Thai dish. The portion was huge and the combination of spices and fresh basil were outstanding. They also prepare special requests. We order chicken with mixed vegetables in a white based sauce. Not spicy but flavorful. Their sesame chicken is more of a. Sweet and sour sauce. Still good. Loved all the veggies in te fried rice that accompanied our meals. This is a take out only restaurant and the inside isn't much to look at. On January 28, 2024 my husband and I ordered from Hunan Garden on Spencerport Rd. While waiting for our dinner I suffered a stroke. The ambulance and firetrucks were at my house when the delivery driver arrived. Naturally my husband cancelled the order. Fast forward to last night. We called to place an order. Only to find out that we are banned from delivery from here due to the fact that there was a medical emergency and had to cancel one time Unfortunately I am unable to drive and my husband has just had knee replacement. I'm surprised this place only has 2.5 stars. This was always my go-to Chinese restaurant when I was living in Gates and I came back tonight to grab takeout while visiting my parents. Their food has always been consistently good. I ordered the chicken mei fun, an egg roll, and chicken fried rice. The order was ready in less than 15 minutes (I picked up in store). Everything tasted great. The egg roll was crispy but not too oily or overcooked, and the mei fun noodles had good flavor. The rice was also nice and a little bit salty, but I prefer my food that way. Overall I really like this place. I think they're reliable and have pretty good Chinese food. They do have a $10 minimum for credit card orders though, so keep that in mind when ordering with a card. read more

About time I updated my review...I have had several good experiences since my 2 star. Today being the most recent good experience. I ordered several items, one of which was a chicken noodle soup...well when I got home I saw that it was a chicken n rice soup. So I called them on the phone and told them the mess up. I asked if they could deliver me the correct item. They said no problem and apologized. Score 1 for customer service. This place is a cozy and adorable family owned Chinese restaurant that serves some delicious food! The family is super sweet and I love their story of how hard they worked to open up this place by training with other Chinese restaurants in the area and really learning the trade, a family really trying to achieve that American dream. Anyways, onto the food, I ordered the Hawaii Five O which comes with breaded shrimp, beef, scallop, roast pork, chicken, and Chinese vegetables with rice ($11.55). This was really delicious! Everything was tender and the brown gravy sauce was delicious. It wasn't super salty and I didn't feel terrible about myself as I usually do when I eat Chinese food take out. The only thing was the scallops I think were slightly overcooked which can be hard to figure out when you have so many different proteins. Overall I think this dish was great! I also got the crab rangoons which is one of my fave things to order. Their crab rangoons are a little sweeter than other places I've ordered from but they're definitely delicious. The sauce that comes with it though is way overly sweet and luckily the crab rangoon is sweet and delicious enough where you can save some extra calories by forgoing the sauce. This place has great deals and great prices for some delicious food. The family is super cute and friendly. They're still growing and I'm pretty excited to see where they go. read more

Definitely one of the better Chinese takeout restaurants in the area. It is in a humble location, but it is well run and consistently cooks delicious food. You could flip a coin between Chef King down the street, or Hunan Garden because they are both good. Chef King has the better egg rolls, but Hunan has a better menu. Try Hunan's curry cashew chicken. Some of the best in town since Larry & David sold Chinatown & it went downhill. Crab Rangoon great, lo Marin is the good thicker noodle not the ones that look like spaghetti like Wegmans, boneless spare ribs great, most entree good. We usually get Sesame chicken & Mongolian or spicy beef. Wish they would make the 'sautéed shrimp in hot spicy sauce (red sauce & onions)' like some other places in the Greece gates area used to. Most of their shrimp dishes battered. Pet peeve every other time we order egg rolls they end up being fried spring rolls instead. It's just not the same or as good. My parents love this place often commenting on how it's one of the best Chinese takeout places that they hever had. I thought nothing of it at first as I am not a huge fan of Chinese food but I decided to see how "extravagant" this establishment was. It's in a strip-mall like white building next to a misfortuned Pontillo's but ta the moment, they are fixing the parking lot so parking may be a slight issue but this is only temporary. It has a decent interior, well kept and clean and smells of "takeout" as soon as you walk in the door. I have never experienced the delivery as I simply drove to the business but everytime i arrive, it's ready for me instantly...expect for a few times where I had to wait a minute or two but not a big deal. Now it's time for the exciting part, the food itself! I had ordered stuffed crab with a side of miso soup for dipping. I'm not a fan of crab, but it tasted pretty damn good, even better with the soup. In traditional Chinese fashion, they package fortune cookies with the meal which is the first thing I go for when I arrive home...sometimes forgetting to take out the fortune in them. Service is friendly and quick and it has earned a spot in my book as "My Favorite Chinese Takeout Place" in the entire world, so far...but I am up to the challenge for another restaruant to challenge what Hunan Garden offers. read more

I've been going to Hunan Garden for 5 years now and I've rarely had a bad experience. Tonight I ordered take-out and, no joke... they microwaved old food. I'm not kidding. It's not hard to tell when food, particularly Chinese food, has been microwaved. And they didn't just microwave it, they way OVER-microwaved it. I gave them 20 minutes before showing up for pickup, and my food as expected was already sitting on the counter. I didn't sit down to eat it for at least another 20 minutes, yet the first bite burned my tongue it was so hot. Given the amount of time it had to cool, that's only possible if the food had been microwaved. Add to that the fact that the sauce was runny and tasted watered down (again, steam from the microwave), the pork was brownish and tough instead of the normal reddish color, the mushrooms were pale and crunchy... I could go on, but I'm telling you, they sold me microwaved leftovers. I'm used to that kind of thing at my local McDonald's (which is why I haven't eaten there in years), but I don't expect to be charged fresh prices for Chinese leftovers. Sooo disappointed!! I live in Spencerport where there are no good Chinese food places. I was so excited when we first tried Hunan Garden... it was so good! But every time after that, tonight was the third, I vow to never eat there again. The bourbon chicken was way too chewy and my sweet and sour pork, along with the egg rolls, were disgustingly greasy, like they either cooked them ahead of time and threw them back in deep fryer to warm them up or the oil was just too old. This was the problem with the egg rolls last time too, just a grease roll. So we are once again on the hunt for a new Chinese place! read more

My husband had the Bourbon Chicken and said the chicken was tough and didn't taste like any Bourbon Chicken he has ever had (not in a good way). The shrimp Toast was good as were the Fried Wontons. The food is average, you could go down the road and get something the same or better. The customer service is why I won't go back. A little over a year or two maybe 3 year ago there's a 30 something guy that started working there, he could be family as I've seen what could be a family working there at times. This guy acts as if he has an attitude, he shows no gratitude for your selecting their store. I tip every time I go and I don't expect anything more than a thank you, but he's never said that. A little over a year ago he didn't return my credit card and I forgot about it signing the receipt. I go back the next day to get it and he was smug about that as well. I got my card, turned it off and decided to go elsewhere from now on, I just don't like that guy's customer service, it's poor at best. So, a week ago I wanted something fast and quick, this restaurant is in my neighborhood so I decided to give them a try again, it's been some time so maybe they've gotten it together. I ordered online and I go in and no one is close to the front and I see that guy, I don't recognize him but it looked to be the guy, he's taller and the guy in back had a similar build. Sure enough he walks up and asks if I want to order or pick up, I said pick up and I gave him my phone number and he put my food up in the window and handed me the receipt to sign, I signed it and tipped and gave him the receipt back and again he had the same disposition, sort of stand-offish and like he was having a bad day. It is all good, I won't be going back there again. You can take this how you want to take it, but people work hard for their money and they can spend their money where ever they like. How come the past couple of times I called this place for delivery I have gotten a different answer? Before they told me they don't deliver here even though they did several times a few weeks before. Just now they will not deliver because "it's a slow night" and they are only doing a 5 mile radius. I am 5.9 miles from them? The food here is great. Amazing food. But every single time I order from here they get my order wrong. No matter what they always get it wrong. If I order shrimp fried rice I get chicken. We have lived in the area for 8 yrs. none of the other Chinese food places in the area compare. The gen tsos is crispy. The food has never been greasy. Delivery is quick. We have been customers of Hunan Gardens for over 10 years and never had a problem with their service or food until the last 2 or so years when everything went down hill. ~ The last three times we ordered the food wasn't delivered on time, in fact it was delivered between an hour to an hour and a half late and close to cold. ~ The food tasted like it was right out of a can, the rice tasted like it was a couple of days old and the shrimp was passable but not great. ~ We thought that we would give them one more try tonight (10/5/19) which was a mistake because after waiting for over 45 minutes past the said delivery time my wife called to ask where our food was when she was told they never got the address from her which was a lie as I was standing next to her when she gave it to them, plus they had our phone number to check if they lost it. ~ She was told it would be on it's way in 10 minutes, well after another 45 minutes I called and spoke to a man who acted like he was doing me a favor by talking to me and again said they didn't have our address and asked me if I wanted the order delivered which would take another 20 to 30 minutes. ~ Needless to say I told him to cancel the order and I would never order from them again, it didn't seem to faze him in the least, could it be because he has heard that before ? ~ I would not recommend them to anyone which is a shame because they used to be a darn good restaurant !! read more

I used to really like this place. When they first opened they were great; service, portions, quality, everything. The last SEVERAL times we've ordered (5+) something is wrong. And they always make us feel like it's OUR fault that they don't pay attention. Tonight I ordered Curry shrimp with white rice &, for at least the second time, I got Curry chicken with fried rice. My bf took it back & got it replaced. This is one of the first negative reviews I've ever felt the need to do. I used to order from Hunan Garden often. At first, the food was amazing, everything was correct, and I loved it. The last year or so, I started having them deliver more often. They would forget something here and there or bring stale noodles. I figured it was a small inconvenience but since the food was good it was fine. Then, I started getting sick after eating their food every time. The last 3 times I've eaten this food, my stomach has been extremely off. This very last time I ordered, though, was appalling. I ordered sweet and sour chicken, two quarts of fried rice, and crispy noodles. What shows up at my house is: the driver saying he forgot the noodles, sweet and sour chicken, & 2 containers of won ton soup. I called and told them that the order was wrong. It took me repeating it 4 times for them to understand what I was trying to say. They told me they would make it and the driver would go back for the noodles and rice. He comes back about 25 minutes later, mind you after the chicken is already eaten. Brings everything correctly. Has the nerve to ask for more money. He said I needed to pay the difference because it was won ton soup rang up on the receipt. I proceeded to tell him that it wasn't my fault the order was placed wrong because I was clear about what I wanted and the woman repeated it back to me on the phone when I originally ordered. He wouldn't leave when I said that and so I said fine, take the money from the tip to pay for the difference. He got upset, took it personally, and said I still owed him 2 dollars. So not only was my order wrong, and food wasn't brought to begin with, I had to pay for my order to be wrong, and got sick off of the food again. I will never go back again. Completely unprofessional and apparently extremely unhealthy, too. read more

Standard Chinese food takeout. While it is not the 100% best Chinese food I have ever had, it is by far the best I have been able to find in gates. The establishment is clean and the staff are always polite. They offer an all white meat sesame chicken, which is unique. They also offer a thai section of their menu. I do not know how authentic it is, I cant vouche for it, but, I have had the spicy thai basil beef fried rice multiple times and I love it. Credit card orders must be more than $10, probably because of the service fee they incur, and they offer delivery on orders over $15. All in all it is a good restaurant and you will get what you're expecting out of take out Chinese food. read more
