This review is long overdue. We have/had 7 dogs, two cats and many birds that live/lived a long and healthy life because of Dr. Appel. I remember the first time I met him it was for my dogs knees. He performed surgery on her knees and pebble lived a beautiful life. I can't even count on both hands how many times Dr. Appel has saved our little ones. My first impression of Dr. Appel was wow this guy is rude, then I started to understand how serious he takes his work. Dr. Appel doesn't want to get into time wasting convos, he wants to save your pet and other pets. Now we just go to him, briefly explain the problem and let him handle it. Follow everything he says and your pet will live a long healthy life. Thank you very much Dr. Appel for all that you have done for us. My cat had injured her hind leg on a jump and could barely walk. I called Dr Appel as his location is 24 hours and he had me bring her right in. He knew immediately what the problem was and scheduled her operation for next day. He also ran her bloodwork to ensure nothing else was wrong which I appreciated. This is one of the only vets that I've been to that I can confidently say knows what he's talking about, is kind, and genuinely loves animals. You may wait a little longer because he does get busy but you'll have peace of mind that he'll let you know what's going on and give you your honest options. I wish my doctors were as caring and thorough as Dr. Roy Appel. A senior dog I was boarding was in distress due to cystitis or a UTI and It didn't feel right to make her wait until morning for a vet visit. I called Dr. Appel- he told me exactly what time to come so there would be no wait. He told me the cost of an emergency visit vs a regular visit upfront. He did not overcharge. He examined the pup thoroughly and gave me options as to how to proceed. He even showed me how to administer medicine. He answered every question twice as he understood I was stressed out and things didn't register fast. I left the office feeling like I had done the right thing and not over reacted by taking the pup to emergency at midnight. She eventually settled down around 3 am and was able to sleep until morning. This morning, we walked, I gave her her meds, she ate her breakfast and is currently she is napping. I feel so relieved the pup is no longer in pain, panting desperately and peeing incessantly. I wish I could give Dr. Appel a zero rating. He was extremely nasty, and condescending to my mother who took her cat in for a check-up of the mouth. He accused her of not caring for her cat, and wanted to remove all of his teeth. The cat had a broken tooth and all she needed was for him to remove it. He told her that it is his business and if he chose to do surgery at 1 am, he could do what he wanted. All he wanted was her money. He ended charging her over $300 for the visit. Dr. Roy saved my precious little girl. I will always be so grateful. He is the best Vet in the whole world !! A week ago my fiancé and I went through the most traumatic experience of my life with my 15 year old poodle. We had the toughest choice in whether to put her to sleep or put her through surgery. We took her to a emergency care hospital first and they said they would do the surgery for about 8-10,000 dollars. We didn't have that money and my dog needed her uterus removed due to an infection. We called many many hospital and vets and they all gave me the same speech and price. Our last phone call was to DR. Roy. I called him around 11 pm. We was shocked for him to answer. From the moment I heard his voice and the way he spoke to me calmly I knew he was special. I was sobbing on the phone and he calmed me down and told me some estimates on his surgery which by fair was so much better than the almost 8-10,000 range. He did for a decent price, less than 3,000! At times I felt that veterinary hospitals always tend to rip people off. These aren't humans we are saving but to me my dog is my human my little girl. He took her in the next day, and performed her emergency surgery. He was sweet and tender and allowed me to call any time for updates. Precious my poodle is now at home resting and anxiously awaiting for her cone to come off and for her favorite new vet to take her stitches off. I was totally disgusted with the treatment that I received by Dr. Appel and his staff. First, the co-owner and I were made to wait over half an hour, past our designated appointment time. Finally, when we were about to go in, the doctor, who appeared disheveled, REFUSED to let us both into his office, despite the fact that we were co-owners, which he initially asked. The receptionist said we would need masks, and that she would try to find one, but did not even look. Appel said two people were out with COVID, so he did not want to risk it. The exam room was large enough for each of us to stand six feet apart. Finally, we made the initial appointment for twelve o'clock today. When we did not receive a confirmation call, we called. The had no record of the appointment, and the earliest they would make it was for 7:00 pm. Bottom line, they were unprofessional, lacking in regard for the owners and not properly recording appointments. Both my friend and I had taken the daf off to go to this vet, and drove across Brooklyn. Outrageous experience.! read more

Dr. Appel is the real deal. He lives and breathes his work, making himself available nearly 24/7! My cat Dean was very well taken care of for several days by Dr. Appel and his staff when he was sick with a high fever. I returned two weeks later with Dean for some dentistry work and am quite satisfied. The prices are fair, considering prices of other vets, Blue Pearl, and Verg. Dr. Appel is one vet, living above his practice, working 12+ hour days. I appreciate his passion and his dedication to his profession and the animals (and animal parents) he serves! read more

Please do not come here if you want your pet to live!  Dr. Roy J Appel is the most unprofessional and unqualified veterinarian I've ever met. He almost killed my dog. I went to the animal hospital and spoke with Dr. Roy because my dog was throwing up for 2 days. I had to rush him to the hospital and I chose this one because it was the closest option available. The doctor asked me what was the issue. I described to him that we had a barbeque and after I came home my dog started throwing up. The doctor didn't know what was wrong and he recommended me to let my dog stay overnight. The bill was $1,085 total for the IV, bloodwork, and staying overnight. I asked if we could pick my dog up at 4pm instead of 10am and he charged us an additional $300-$400 for this. I asked why it is so much and he started giving me attitude and was very rude. I just asked for a pricing breakdown and he started being defensive and did not answer the question. Instead he showed me other people's bills trying to convince me which is super unethical and violates HIPPA. At this point I wanted to take him and leave, but this doctor threatened me that my dog could die without an IV tonight, so I was pressured to leave him at the hospital. After I picked him up at 8am, I saw he was on an IV and he didn't look any better. The doctor said that the blood results turned out fine and that I didn't want an x-ray. But he did not ask me for an x-ray option in the first place. All he asked was if my dog had ingested any bones. He suggested I leave him there for another day and he tried to explain the bloodwork. He clearly did not know what was wrong with my dog and I grew so frustrated I took him to Verg Hosptial. Immediately upon arrival, the doctor at Verg knew exactly what was wrong. He explained to me the bloodwork results just fine and he did an x-ray and found out that my dog ate a corn cob. Not only was Dr. Roy J Appel an uncompassionate, unprofessional, and greedy doctor, he threatened my dog's life and he caused him more pain by wasting my time. TLDR: The doctor here was super unprofessional, unqualified, and wasted my time. He is a greedy man who doesn't deserve his veterinarian license. read more

My experience here was horrible. I called in before coming to get my dog an X-ray because I was concerned about her limping after playing with another dog. I had a very short and rushed conversation maybe 35 seconds max. I knew from our convo that I should've chose a different spot because he wasn't helpful or concerned about my dog's health. The only reason I went to him was because it was close to my house and other places were fully booked. He called me after our phone call saying "sorry I missed your call" meanwhile he was the one that hung up. Anyways, first impressions of the office: it's old, dusty, dark and it stinks. Usually my dog is excited and calm in vet offices but she was very nervous and scared. Regardless I wanted to make sure she was ok and wait another day. The vet kept telling me to put my mask up higher because "someone got sick and they had to close their office for two weeks" which is unrelated and not my problem. He kept wanting to put a muzzle on my 15lbs dog when she wasn't even biting or barking. I kept telling him that it's ok she doesn't need a muzzle because we have been to vets before and it was fine. But he kept arguing with me and decided to hold her with his special anti bite gloves while giving me an attitude. I told him the problem and he was examining the wrong area of my dog. When I corrected him, he again rolled his eyes and gave me attitude. After examining my dog, he suggested I do an X-ray but he never mentioned that I would have to put my dog under anesthesia. I thought you can do an X-ray without anesthesia (I did call some places after that and they actually do that) anyways, this vet wasn't helpful at all, he said I have TWO choices either I do X-ray WITH anesthesia or do nothing. Lol great choices. I said I'm not doing anything. Good bye. He charged me $75 for absolutely nothing. Don't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Blue Pearl emergency hospital recommended Dr. Appel to me. They couldn't take another appointment that day and I needed Spikette seen right away. My 14 year old cat Spikette X-rays showed her spleen needed to be removed. When Dr Appel did the surgery he let me know that her liver was also damaged and she had cancer. He was very compassionate with Spikette. She did very well after the surgery. But it was clear she wouldn't have much longer with us. She was in very good hands and I felt the Dr Appel was very knowledgeable. Evelyn the core of his office was very helpful and has a lot of patience with everyone. I could go on and on about Dr Appel and Evelyn. Unfortunately Spikette passed away on Friday the 17th. Thank you again Dr Appel and Evelyn. Dr. Appel is a lifesaver, literally. I brought in Vegas, my 16 year old cat, when he suddenly was having difficulty breathing. Dr. Appel saw him on an emergency basis and right away informed me that unless action was taken immediately, Vegas would have 48 hours to live, at most. I was completely shocked as he had never exhibited any type of health problems in 16 years. The doctor explained the procedure to me, was receptive to all my questions and was very supportive. That same evening, the procedure was performed successfully. Vegas required two overnight stays during which Dr. Appel monitored him closely and provided me with constant updates, at all hours of the night. I am relieved to say that Vegas is better for the time being and everything checked out excellent on a recent followup exam. He is now on medications and a prescription diet which Dr. Appel prescribed. I am very grateful for the care the Doctor provided and strongly recommend him. He is also very experienced and has an impressive educational background. His office staff is also extremely helpful (thank you, Evelyn!). Since my first review was flagged I'm editing it a bit: Let me start off by saying I REALLY wanted to like this vet, I really did. He seemed very knowledgeable, had excellent reviews (I failed to read the filtered reviews - I suggest you do so), and is close to my place. But I had a big problem with Dr. Appel's "bed side manner". He handled my dog and cat less like a doctor would a patient and more like a mechanic would a car. My cat has never had a problem with any other vet, but I could see she was upset by his handling of her and even hissed at one of the techs (something she has NEVER done). And when I tried to go over to calm her down I was treated as if I was "in the way". As for the billing, Dr. Appel writes all the vaccinations and shots down with a price next to it and you have to pick and choose what your pet gets...some people might like this, I found it rather unnerving. I don't choose what my pets get based on price, but on what they really need. If they don't really need something, don't bring it up so I feel bad saying no. Either way I ended up spending (in my opinion) too much for what I received. One compliment I can give Dr. Appel is he seemed to be knowledgeable, and who knows maybe he was having a bad day, but bad day or not I will not be going back. read more

I'm gonna start this review off by saying that I really want to give the man 4/5 stars, but in all honesty, feel I need to drop one star because he's probably one of the more expensive vets out there, and not everyone will likely be able to afford him. Now, if you're wondering, do you get what you pay for? The answer is absolutely yes. Here's how today's experience with Fifth Ave Animal Hospital and Dr. Appel went down: Picked up two stray kittens yesterday evening. Have two cats already at home -- street cats with fleas, possibly worms, unknown FIV *absolutely* have to be segregated from our two preexisting house cats, but to be fair to the kittens and because it's a Brooklyn apartment (ie very limited space), we wanted to start the vaccination, deworming, and testing process ASAP today Sunday so that they can have free range of the apartment as quickly as possible. Makes sense, right? We went through three area vets, two of which currently service our other two cats -- one isn't open Sundays, the other couldn't squeeze the 15 minutes it would've taken to vaccinate, weigh, and draw blood from the kittens into their busy schedule today. The third had such appalling reviews both on Yelp and on other review sites, we decided to skip them all together. Then -- Dr. Appel. Dr. Appel advertized being open till 8pm every day of the week. I found that odd for a Sunday, but then quickly realized he also does on-call emergency vet care till 12 am every day, so I gave him a call. Sunday is usually reserved for emergencies only, but I explained the situation with the two rescue kittens to him, and despite having one foot out the door, he agreed to take care of the two of them at non-emergency prices if we could get them there in 20 minutes. We got there, and there was no vet tech team -- just Dr. Appel. He explained that we would have to help him handle the kittens, but was more than willing to let us come back in the morning at no extra cost if during the vaccinations or blood drawing, we were unable to manage the cats. Thanks to his clear and calm direction, we were in and out in a matter of a half-hour, everything taken care of. He was thorough in his explanation of vaccines and test options, including exactly how much everything would cost. He did *not* push every available vaccine and test on us, simply explained given the circumstances of the kittens, and the fact of our preexisting indoor cats, which ones he would recommend us getting. He even actually gave us tips on how to turn low-cost household items into flea shampoo. There are other vets who don't charge for a visit when inoculating and vaccinating for first-time visits because the cost of the tests and medications are so high. Those are also the same vets who couldn't or wouldn't see our cats on such short notice in a non-emergency capacity. I also feel most vets don't have the diaspora of clinical experience Dr. Appel does with serious house pet illnesses, although that's a feeling based simply on conversation and previous experiences with other vets. I may not be able to afford using Dr. Appel on a frequent basis because of how expensive he is, but if my cats ever get sick on a Sunday, or if my regular vet has trouble identifying the issue, I'm glad to know of Dr. Appel and will absolutely use this man as the resource he is. read more

I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Appel! My dog was very sick months back and it was after 11:00pm, but I knew it was an emergency. I found his office through google and was happy he was located close to home. He saved my dog's life. Even after a three day stay in the hospital there, my dog willingly walks in there today. This shows me that my dog trusts him as much as I do. He is so knowledgable, explains everything in detail and works on my dog in front of me which I wasn't used to at my previous vet. He recently diagnosed my dog with pancreatitis after I visited my old vet. If you are looking for a fancy place with multiple doctors and waiting time, go elsewhere. This is a review regarding my rabbit - Lola. Not a lot of vets will see bunnies because they are quite different than treating cats or dogs. Most dedicated bunny moms have an exotics vet that specializes in rabbits but none are close to Bay Ridge. However a bunny friend had suggested Dr. Appel and when I came home to a bunny that wasn't eating I called the next morning before they even opened and they told me to come in when they opened. Dr. Appel did everything right with my little bun. Took an xray to identify the issue in her tummy, gave her fluids, and gave all the right meds. He also knew all the bunny specific follow up care routines and gave great advice. He gave her belly massages to try and get things moving and was patient with me even though I was a little upset and not sure what to do. He also offered to let me call my exotics vet and talk the situation over with them - a lot of vets won't do that, they don't want to feel supervised, but he just wanted me to have peace of mind. I didn't call and just trusted him. He had us hang out at the office a bit because he didn't want to send her home prematurely. After the in office treatment we went home and a few hours later she was much improved. Now she's made a full recovery and is her usual happy, hoppy self! I talked to my bunny vet and other members of the NYC House Rabbit Society and everyone agreed he did a great job with a specialty case that many other vets wouldn't be able to handle. I had a very sick cat and called Dr. Appel, Thank goodness I did. He cared for him personally, hand fed him, and trained me to take care of him so I could take him home. Dr Appel is an excellent vet with a great bed-side manner as well as a great surgeon. The first time I took my cat to him was for a broken hip. It was late at night, after closing time but he stayed til I got there. The very next morning the surgery was performed. The surgery was a success and so was the follow up care. I e taken my cat there for regular visits, dental care and other procedures. Dr Appel actually spends nights taking care of the animals post-op. This fellow, who claimed he could treat so-called "exotics", failed to identify a simple issue (Cushings Disease); wanted more and more expensive tests (most people writing reviews are saying that); refused to listen to the suggestions of a different vet who had diagnosed the problem correctly; and then had the gall to tell me he did not want to treat my pet any more, that after I refused to have more tests!! No tests were needed to identify this condition - it should be obvious to anyone with any knowledge, and was to the other vet I spoke to. It was to me after I learned a few things. The animal passed away in pain thanks to this guy. Unforgiveable. He was also uncaring in his brusque demeanor in person and on the phone. Just bad news. Stay away. read more

I originally posted my review a year ago and it is now gone. Go to the bottom and read all the 1 star reviews that have been filtered out. I had two sick baby parrots whose food was not emptying from their crops. I called ahead to let him know I was in traffic and would be there about 15 minutes late. I arrived, spoke to reception and waited to be called. An hour passed and I continued to wait. The receptionist approached me after 2 hours and told me there was a cancellation and that I would be seen next. I continued to wait and he continued to call everyone except me. I approached the receptionist but she could not explain why I was not seen in place of the cancellation. So after 3 hours of waiting I walked out. At no time was I rude, at no time did I do anything to offend anyone, I was polite and i was patient. Apparently there is something wrong with this person as you will read in the other reviews that have been filtered out by Yelp. He is angry and he takes his anger out on random pet owners and probably pets when he feels like it. If you really care for your pet pass up the convenience of going to him because he is close by and find someone else. This guy is a thief!!! Dr. Appel, also known as Dr. "Chaching". He is a complete crook. I brought our dog there to have him look at 2 small bumps. He convinced me that it could be cancer and that he would need an operation to remove them and biopsy them. Halfway thru the surgery he calls me to tell me he found another lump and strongly recommended it be removed for an additional charge. Then as we were leaving he recommended a pain killer just in case and charged me extra. In total we spent $1275. The lumps turned out to be pimples!!! I found out from other Vets, that these lumps could have simply been aspirated and then removed only if the cells looked odd. I strongly recommend you do not go to this man. read more

This vet will hear your complaint and then do every test he possibly can in order to charge you HUNDREDS of dollars. Then after doing 3-4 different test will then give you a result and charge you More for any remedy needed. He is like a mechanic changing 5 parts to fix a car that only needed 1 part changed ! Yeah you get a good result but your EXCESSIVELY OVERCHARGED to get there ! My puppy had Diarrhea and he suggested, "well he may have a parasite, lets test" So he did a Stool Test, a Blood test, and threw in an Ear Mite test... All came back negative and he then suggest, Well it could be his food, he may be allergic... $504 Dollars for all these test to be negative and the pup have reaction to his food.... read more

This man has dollar signs in his eyes. The first thing out of his mouth was a renegotiation of the cost for the visit and not an offer to give my howling cat a painkiller for his ready to explode-bladder while i decided if i should shell out 1800$ or put my baby to sleep. He is unprofessional and used my desperate state to charge me as much as possible. He made me feel so uneasy and worried about how he would take care of my animal. He even asked me if i wanted his staff to stay and help him with the procedure as if it were my responsibility to pay their salary. He seemed to think he was doing me a favor to do his job! Do you have to itemize each expense and tell me that i can choose to decline any part of the procedure even though i am not a doctor and cannot possibly realize the repercussions of my decisions?He is clearly in the field for the wrong reasons. He and his staff even physically blocked my way out of the office because i refused to leave my cat there and to pay for this abusive office visit. What a miserable man! Shame on you! My cat has lived in 4 cities across the country and has seen countless vets in her lifetime. I'd have to say that Dr. Appel is one of the most caring vets I've ever met. He successfully performed a rather delicate and invasive surgery procedure on my cat, and she recovered beautifully, although the growth removed ended being cancerous. In the last two months of my cat's life, Dr. Appel was not only knowledgeable but sensitive as well during this difficult time. He and his staff instructed me on various at-home hospice procedures, and they were always helpful whenever I had any questions. My cat passed away (surprisingly close to when he had expected her to) and I believe her last few weeks here were improved thanks to Dr. Appel and his staff. read more

My 14 year old Siamese cat was sick for the first time ever. She normally has the best appetite and is even a beggar when we are having dinner. She suddenly was not crazy about her normal Friskies canned food and didnt even care for her snacks or for water. This happened for about 2 days and then she threw up bile. That urged me to get medical attention for her. My friend highly recommended Dr. Appel and I was extremely pleased. He had to sedate my cat in the muscle because she was a bit "ferocious." He took care of so many issues...they even clipped all her nails, because she doesn't allow us! To make a long story short, the Dr. hydrated her with I.V and also vitamin injections, gave me antibiotic drops to give her And we are still waiting on some test results. I had went to another vet and they didnt seem to know what was wrong with my 6 year old pug.Sam. Sam had passed out one day and being that I live close to Dr. Appel I called and asked if I could bring Sam in. I took Sam in and he was able to tell me in a few minutes what was wrong with my pug. Sam was dealing with a life threatening disorder and had to be put to rest. Dr Appel and his staff were full of compassion for my loss and allowed me as much time as I needed after he went to sleep. They were considerate and very kind. Right before I left Sam for the last time Dr Appel cam into the room and petted Sam and told me that he was a good and happy dog. If I ever get another dog I will keep Dr. Appel as a vet for our family. read more

I have a 4 year old American Staffordshire Bull terrier with severe food and environmental allergies so I have spent a lot of time at the Vet. I moved to this neighborhood about 2 years ago and needed to find a primary vet for my dog; I looked online and found Dr. Appe based on his level of education I chose to see him. I went for her annual physical and shots; the prices were the same as they were at her last vet. Dr. Appel did an extremely comprehensive history of her medical issues (which is what a doctor is supposed to do), and detailed a few different options for managing her condition. I ultimately made the decision to have blood work and put her on long term medication to help better manage her symptoms. She was doing extremely well. I recently I came home from work to find her having an acute allergic reaction, I think she ate something while walking, I immediately called the office and THE DOCTOR answered at 9:00 pm! I rushed her to the office where he was waiting for me! He gave her an injection to minimize the severity of her reaction while he was examining her. He took her temperature, ran blood work, and decided the best course of treatment was to admit her for IV medication. He PERSONALLY stayed with her to monitor her ALL NIGHT! I called him at 11:00 PM when I got home and settled in to check on her, he told me to give him a call around 1am to check again if I wanted to. This level of service is unparalleled. He is extremely knowledgeable and I would highly recommend him and have done so to friends who are equally impressed with Dr. Appel. And for all of the people who commented he only cares about money you should be ashamed of yourself! He is the most caring, compassionate vet I have ever used. If you do not have the money to properly care for an animal (well OR sick) you should not own one! He is such an amazing vet and I am so happy I found him! read more

Dr Appel is either outdated in his medicine or simply unskilled. My experience was every dog lover's worst nightmare. We brought our dog in for digestive issue, she had been losing her appetite. Blurry x-rays, blood tests and bad guesswork cost us close to $900 total. The doctor gave a clueless diagnosis and she died. read more

I only wish human hospitals were this nice and efficient. We came in on a friday morning with our boxer, Laila, who cut her paw pad on a piece of glass at the park. The front desk staff was professional and compassionate. They greeted us immediately, let us know what to expect, and made us feel comfortable. Dr. Appel was very professional, personable, and efficient. Dr. Appel explained everything to us thoroughly the whole procedure before and after! Saw Dr. Appel for the first time last night with my 8 month old kitten. Waited for about a half hour and the first thing the doctor did was apologize for the wait, which I appreciated. The review on Yelp that convinced me to see this doctor said that he was thorough and I agree with this assessment. He did find a tapeworm segment (gross), but also went on to look for the presence of any other parasites (there were none, thank god). I was extremely grossed out by the whole thing, but Dr. Appel did a great job explaining everything and summed it all up by saying this was a "simple problem" which is one of the best things you can hear from any doctor. read more

Dr. Appel's charges for his services are disgracefully high compared with those of other vets in the area. It discourages people from going to the vet, and therefore from maintaining the wellness of their pets through preventive services like teeth cleaning and innoculations. He also refuses to honor the inexpensive spay and neuter certificates. Surely one of the best things we can do for animals is to keep down the population. A dog's teeth cleaning, even with extractions, should be no more than $400. He quoted us and several other people $1200 to $1500. Dr. Appel is currently treating my cat for cancer, and thank goodness she is in his care. A few months ago she was very ill, and now she is thriving and healthy looking. Dr. Appel is an extremely knowledgeable and skilled doctor, and I know my cat is getting the best of care. I went to a few other vets before, but when one misdiagnosed my cat five years ago, I sought out another doctor. I chose Dr. Appel based on his expertise and educational background. I couldn't have made a better decision! He has always treated my cat with great care. When she had surgery, he stayed over each night to care for her, as he does for all his patients. I opted for chemo to treat her lymphoma, which he does himself, right in his office. I would come in with a flurry of questions and Dr. Appel always listened, answered those questions and addressed my concerns. He always calls with test results and methodically explains everything. With his care and guidance, he made a difficult time a bit easier. I know he is treating a dog with cancer for four years now. While I don't know what my cat's longevity will be, I do know I am confident and secure in Dr. Appel's ability to care for her. I know Dr. Appel to be a compassionate, kind, and dedicated professional, and it is comforting to know my pet is in such good hands. read more

Dr. Roy is hands down the best Vet in Brooklyn, one of the best in the city.He's worked miracles with our 18 year old cat, as well as taking wonderful care of other animals of ours.
