We're thrilled with the detailed practical care that Dr. Truitt and her staff give our animals. We've had an especially tough time with our special needs foster-turned-adoptee cat who has myriad health issues. She's done so much caring for him, performing dental surgery, prescribing ringworm meds, and recommending specialists when needed. We've taken all our cats to her. Update: Our special needs cat turned out needing additional care due to neurological injuries Dr. Truitt discovered that had happened before his rescue. She recommended a specialist (who was awesome) and remained incredibly helpful directing his care as we progressed during the last two years. I can't rave enough about the quality of care my dog received the team Opal and The Vet Set. My dog had teeth removed and they were so attentive in his care, did a wonderful job explaining his situation and recovery with me, and worked around our needs. Dr. Truit is incredible. My dog has been her patient for over a year and I have zero complaints. She really cares. She's helped me through all the phases. My dog has his own challenges, I'm pretty sure I've cried in her office at least once possibly twice. Dr Truitts guidance continues to help me through the ups and downs. She gently suggested a trainer who we love and was a perfect fit for my dog. It feels like she knows him almost as much as I do whenever we visit. It's been well over a year since I've last been to Vet Set, but before sharing this negative review I wanted to wait until we were 100% transitioned to Bond Vet. To start, we loved the support staff, and our issues were specifically with Dr. Truitt. To summarize, we found her to be quite pushy, finger-waggy on everything we should be doing for our puppy, quick to upcharge, expensive, impatient, and rude upon any questioning about services/upcharges. We took our new puppy to the Vet Set and signed up for the "puppy package" which in theory was a flat fee for our first several visits for shots, initial care, etc. Yet, with each visit we left with a sour taste in our mouths with all of the random up charges on top of our "flat fee" puppy package, some of which were absurd. On one visit we mentioned we were traveling with the puppy soon, so Dr. Truitt took it upon herself to charge us $50 for a random travel certificate that no airline has ever asked us for in the 10+ times that we have since flown with our dog. On another visit we asked about some gunk we had noticed in our puppy's ear, and sure enough we later saw a $30 charge for an ear cleaning that we never asked for. On our final visit, Dr. Truitt tried to upcharge us for a treatment that she had quoted us much less for on a cheaper visit, and when I confronted her on that and prior examples of dishonest up charging she completely lost her cool and impulsively lied about my prior examples (said the $30 ear cleaning was for an ear infection...which she had never mentioned to me until that moment?) but eventually honored her original quote for the treatment. We have since moved to Bond Vet, who we love and couldn't recommend enough. There is always an information asymmetry between veterinarians and pet owners (especially new pet owners). Some vets exploit that information asymmetry (and our love for our pets) for their own gain, and unfortunately Dr. Truitt is one of those vets. Please consider Bond Vet instead. read more

I went to the Vet Set today because after my dog was groomed he started licking the area where he was neutered 2 years earlier. He had been licking that area for a day and it was getting more and more irritated to the point that he would no longer go outside without me carrying him down 3 flights of stairs. I looked up online about irritation around this area after grooming and it was a common problem that was easily treated with hydrocortisone spray and a collar to stop him from licking. I didn't want to carry my dog 10 blocks so I went The Vet Set without him to see if they could help. They told me they could not give the hydrocortisone spray without seeing him since they sell a prescription strength medication. I understood and then asked if they could sell me the collar to stop him from licking. The person at the front desk went to the back and returned 5 minutes later to tell me they could not give me the collar because they need to see the dog to size the collar correctly. I told them it would be the same size collar they gave me last time. So the receptionist went to the back again for 5 minutes, returned and apologized that the doctor could not give me the collar without seeing the dog. I explained that my dog would not walk, weighs 60 lb and I would have to carry him ten blocks to get him here, but the vet was as stubborn as my dog and would not budge on selling me the collar. Even my pediatrician has prescribed things to my kids without an office visit when it is clear what is going on. It has become clear to me that Dr. Truitt cares more about making money than she does about my dog. This is just one example of many that this practice has tried to charge me for ridiculous things. I should have left them a long time ago but they finally pushed me to go to a new vet. read more

WOW my husband and I cannot believe how lucky we were to have found Dr. Truitt and her staff. We went for our first visit today after a traumatic experience at our usual vet and were beyond impressed. Our cat recently got his annual vaccines at his usual vet and things didn't go as well as usual. They were pretty rough on him and it ended up in everyone getting bit and him accidentally relieving himself on the exam table. To make things worse, most of our questions were brushed off and we felt like we got rushed out the door. It was time to look for a new vet. After many google/yelp searches, we found the Vet Set. I had already called a few places but wasn't impressed and really wanted to make sure we got him the best care. I couldn't believe they had so many five star reviews...it sounded too good to be true! When I called to schedule his appointment, I spoke to a woman on the phone who I believe was named Brianna or Bri. She was incredibly empathetic regarding our cat's last visit and answered all of my questions without hesitation. She completely sold me on their office and ultimately is the reason we chose to come here first. Dr. Truitt's bedside manner is impeccable as well!! My husband and I joked as we left that we wish she was practicing in human medicine because we would love to be her patients!! What a friendly doctor, which we aren't really used to! At his usual doctor, we feel like a burden when we ask questions and sometimes get brushed off. As a pet owner, it's great to leave with all questions answered. This is the first time we've left the vet feeling so great. She was incredibly patient with our scared cat and we didn't feel like a bother. I asked all the questions I could think of and she answered every single one. We were never rushed, ignored, or dismissed. My husband couldn't believe how patient Dr. Truitt was, and neither could I. There are not many businesses that get all 5 Star reviews. After much research my family and I decided on the vet set for our baby boy Luka. We were fortunate enough to get an appointment with Dr Taylor Truitt. We were all immediately please with the clean environment ,friendly staff and the quiet and calm atmosphere. We were thrilled to be able to get some help from Doctor Taylor for our dog. She immediately diagnosed him, ran labs and we were able to get him the antibiotics he needed . 6 weeks later he's a brand-new boy. We live about a half an hour away from the vet set ,but that's no problem. We are happy to travel to a place that doesn't force unnecessary tests and actually helps your dog. The Vet Set was recommended to us by our old vet when we decided that we would prefer home visits for our cat Kuzya. Dr. Truitt is professional, knowledgable and very caring. I brought my 12 year old cat to The Vet only once - the staff members were caring and kind. Dr. Truitt- was very dismissive; I felt she didn't care. Dr. Truitt's recommendations were unclear. she didn't follow up how my cat was doing. In for months my cat passed away. After my cat's passing, I notified the place - Dr. called me - not only she was cold, she was rude to me. I didn't blame her but I just expressed my concerns-- no need to be rude. read more

I felt the staff, from reception to vet, genuinely seemed happy to have our puppy with them, and that was definitely not my experience at our prior vet practice. We recently had her spayed at Vet Set, and she was back to feeling herself within two days and the incision was completely healed within about a week with no issues. Highly recommend! read more

I came to Brooklyn for 6 weeks to work on a project, and brought my dog with me for company. About three weeks in to my stay, she seemed really out of sorts and acted as if her ear was hurting her. I was able to call and get an appointment right away with The Vet Set, and brought Junebug in for a visit. The woman working at the front desk was kind and funny. The vet tech was sympathetic and professional. And Dr. Taylor herself spent a lot of time getting up to speed on Bug's history and health issues, and then gave her a very thorough checkup. It turned out she had an ear infection! She got meds and TONS of TLC from the doctor and the entire staff. I was amazed by the time the doctor spent with us, the 5-star treatment my little buddy received, and the reasonable price of the clinic. I could not have asked for a better experience, and am so grateful that she got my best buddy back to 100% so we could continue enjoying New York together. read more

Dr. Truitt has questionable ethics and I would caution her existing clients to consider switching the care of their precious pet to another vet. When we brought in our healthy and happy 4-year-old dog for a routine checkup, Dr. Truitt pushed on us an extensive surgery for two of his hindlegs that would have cost over $5000 and required 4 months of rehab, including two weeks of bedrest. She claimed it was common and typical and that at least two of her patients had the surgery each month (this set off alarms in my head--why could such an extreme measure be so commonly needed among her patients? Was she not trying to prevent the need for it earlier on?). My husband and I were startled because our dog seemed perfectly fine, and had only minimal signs of the symptoms Dr. Truitt pointed to. We were very concerned and lost as to what to do, because Dr. Truitt said that if we didn't get him the surgery ASAP, the condition would worsen. She also suggested that our other dog, who is 6 and also happy and healthy, would need the surgery down the line. We subsequently got independent second and third opinions from two other vets, who each said that there was no need for such an extreme measure for such a healthy and happy dog, and that they would never consider embarking on such a route for their own dogs. The operation would have been preventative at best, and even then it would have made him *more* vulnerable to arthritis, nor would it have been sufficient to protect his legs in the future. We have since switched over to one of those vets--the lovely Dr. Thomson at Brooklyn Heights Vet--and now regret not getting a second opinion on many of the things that Dr. Truitt had previously pushed on us. For the sake of your beloved pets, please take Dr. Truitt's guidance with a grain of salt, and get a second or third opinion. Looking back, I see that she had foisted on us many procedures that were expensive, unnecessary, and downright harmful to our dogs. I know vets need to make money too--she made frequent jokes and comments about putting her kid through college--but they should not do so at the expense of their patients. Please consider finding a vet that values your best frien above the bottom line. He deserves it. read more

I met with 3 members of your staff all with no masks. Sorry, a little of a lot sketchy business. "It's a policy!" I am fine with policies but usually a client is told that upfront. Tell me this when I called to inquire about a visit so I can decide if I was comfortable with your policy. No, instead, you billed me $150 before walking in the door with my puppies then casually bring up a "policy" when you are already in the office and clearly inconvenienced. Classic Used Car Salesman tactics. Save your money this place is a ripoff! A slap in the face to dog owners who care enough about their pets to try to give them the best. Really, really great. We've been going to the Vet Set regularly for the last six months with our senior terrier, Eddie. I give these folks the highest recommendation across the board--on quality of care, attention, empathy and sympathy. Dr. Taylor's bedside manner is wonderful (with both the patient *and* the associated human). The whole team is kind and generous, in fact, from the vet to the support staff. They're a tremendous asset to the neighborhood, and to our family. Our dog Eddie is a 12-year-old rescue, and he came to us with trust and anxiety issues. Dr. Taylor handled him with care and patience, and the whole team treats our dog Eddie like a celebrity every time we come in. We've taken to stopping in when we're passing by to say hello and get Eddie a treat. They definitely won his trust, and it feels like visiting friends, not going to see "the doctor." The Vet Set has performed some complex dental surgery on Eddie, treated him for early kidney failure, and eased his arthritis. The little guy has his challenges, but he's getting cadillac care from these folks, and I'm confident that he's living his late years in excellent hands. I've lived in Carroll Gardens for nearly 10 years (said the oldest 34 year old in the world) and during that time finding vet care for my cats has always been a trial. Finding The Vet Set was nothing short of miraculous. I recently adopted a kitten who is a bit of a fixer-upper. It really doesn't get any better than having a knowledgeable, caring and friendly vet come to you. My dog, like most, is not a fan of going to the vet and since I can work from home this was FAR more convenient than traveling to a vet office, waiting in the waiting room, then waiting some more in the examine room, then waiting even more as they come and go out of the room. It was great being able to do it all from the comfort of my home and even better that when Dr. Taylor is with you ALL of her attention is focused on you and your fur-baby. I also really liked that I could go over Ollie's food and treats with her as I believe one of Ollie's treats was making him sick. As most "convenience" types of service, it is a bit more expensive then if you go directly to a vet but it was well worth it. PROS: + they come to you + no travel time to and from the vet + no waiting (typically multiple times at vet offices) + they get to see your pets environment, food, etc.. + your pet is far more comfortable CONS: + is a little more expensive than traditional vets but I don't consider this a real con as I felt it the value I received and convenience justified the cost (but I understand where this could be a con to others) I plan on continuing to use their service. Like the rest of the world, we have a COVID puppy and decided to go with this practice after reading the reviews on Yelp. It is the care for our puppy that we had hoped for and more! Everyone who works there is so kind and gentle with our little girl, and Dr. Truitt goes the extra mile of providing additional pointers and advice, such as specific needs your puppy might have (ours is not greedy enough to make treats a worthwhile reward, so she recommended a few specialty brands), general advice (insurance recommendations) and an overall personal touch (her doggie Noah is frequently there as well and meets your dogs :)). Our girl is a little on the sickly side (or maybe just a regular puppy) so we have been there 4-5 times already in the last 2 months. The team is always prompt, knowledgeable, courteous and transparent, and they have a comforting manner. Really happy we have found such a great provider! read more

Hands down - the best vet "visit" we've ever had. Not only did we completely avoid the whole "clinic scent and other sick animals freak my dog out" situation, but Dr Taylor & Michelle were so nice when they came, our dog instantly loved them and ran into their arms. Now, I could go on & on about how professional, punctual, respectful, thorough, and organized (wait until you see the online portal they have) these guys are... But the best part, by far, was that unlike "normal vets" where you get to talk to the doctor for 10-15 mins at best and spend the rest of the time waiting, Dr Taylor will stay as long as you need. It seemed like the doc would not leave before she made sure we fully understood everything we needed to... She must've spent close to an hour going over every little detail with us. I had heard great things about Vet Set and our vet is a bit further away so we thought we would check it out and go in for a microchipping. The staff was lovely. Dr Truitt was not. She was very judgmental and patronizing. My dog has had a leg issue since we adopted him that we are on top of and he has been seen by the best sports medicine vets. She questioned my knowledge of his injury and raced through the appt assigning tests and procedures. We came in for a $150 microchipping and left with a $500 bill and we were given zero estimate prior to the bill. I would do your research before seeing her. As it is my understanding Dr Truitt is lacking some of the training top vets in the area have. I would never go back. She made me feel like a horrible pet owner and after I left I was in tears.
