I had to take my pet dog Bella to the vet as a result of pain, restlessness, and pacing for hours on the first of February to Dr. Appel. I had to walk 2 in a half blocks in the morning during a snowstorm. He immediately charges me 125$. There was no staff, and he examined her while I was holding her. He sedated her before requesting a blood test. He charges 145 for the day for examination, 179 for the blood test, 89 for the sedation, and 31 for a sugar test. When I came to check on her hours later the nurse said that she had too much sedatives. She is a toy Maltese weighing 4.2 ounces. When I took her home all her problems were worst with excessive whimpering and crying. I take her back to Dr. Roy and he rudely states that it is my fault. After the sedatives he stated she was worst because of her brain. Dr. Roy immediately tells me I have to make up my mind whether or not I want to put her down because he has to close the clinic. I decided to put her down following his advice. I was very distraught holding my dog and his bedside manner was callous, cold, disturbing, and unprofessional. He said if the injection goes into me or him we're gonna die so I have to firmly hold the dogs head. He missed the vain. My dog cried out one last time and I was brought to tears holding my pet as she dies painfully. My friend calls me up on speaker phone and I explain to him the events that just unfolded. Dr. Roy then rushes in screams at me to leave cause he was concerned I would not pay him. Which I never said I would do. This is was 3 minutes after my dog was just put down. He was blaming me for my dog being hurt since I took the cheaper euthanized treatment. As I walk back home in the snowstorm he calls me 2 hours later to apologize. He is the worst vet ever. I never had a vet disrespect me. He had no compassion and all this vet wants is money! He took advantage of my age as I am a senior citizen and him and I were by ourselves. He should not be practicing. The way he treats dogs and people both in a disturbing inhumane way. All he cares about is money. I know I made a mistake, she could've been saved elsewhere. STAY AWAY!! I think this man is stuck in the 60s with his techniques, but not only that, his office looks like it could feature in a horror movie. My dog broke her leg, and after 3 previous vet visits at several doctors, I came upon Dr. Appel. He is unfriendly, insensitive, and on top of it all, he didn't even observe my dog. Went straight into finances. He clearly does not care about your animal, but he sure cares about his pocket. After leaving my dog with him, and deciding not to do surgery, just a splint, I received a phone call from him saying "from her X-rays looks like there's a tone ligament and if you don't do surgery she's going to have arthritis for the rest of her life"..... Ummmmm excuse me, not everyone is as dumb as you and I sure as hell know- X-RAYS DO NOT SHOW LIGAMENTS!!! He is an absolute thief. Besides all of this chaos, I go to pick up my dog and wait about an hour to find my dog sitting in a cage in the back room, in the dark. Long story short, he said this splint was to be kept on for 6 weeks. 2 weeks later I take my dog to one of the most amazing pet hospitals ever- One Love Animal Hospital on 82nd and 3rd ave. They removed her cast only to find a huge infection because that idiot who calls himself a doctor knew that anything kept on skin for that long, a build up of bacteria will occur. Even with humans, you can not keep a bandage on for weeks without changing it. So because of this I have to get her broken leg treated, plus this huge raw infection. If I had not made the decision to take her to another doctor, her leg would of had to be amputated. STAY AWAY FROM THIS EVIL MAN. He does not care about you or your dog and he's a LIAR on top of it. Oh, and must I add, the price I paid at One Love was less than half I paid at Appel. My dog is doing amazing and is almost done with her recovery thanks to Dr Joey Tsang. read more

I brought my cat 'Bean' here after he had abruptly stopped eating/drinking. Dr. Appel immediately ordered a series of tests that would rule out some of the more serious illnesses my cat's symptoms aligned with. He had also informed me the severity of my cat's health since he had not eaten/drank anything for the past 2-3 days and was visibly lethargic; I trusted the expertise and agreed to a 3 night hospitalization. Throughout the 3 days, I was given routine updates on my cat's overall health. On the 3rd day, he was discharged and was visibly more energetic and even started eating again! He still has not drank anything, but perhaps that's because he spent the past 3 days hooked up to an IV. Dr. Appel has over 35 years of experience and holds a degree from Cornell. The man lives upstairs and will see your pet at 3 in the morning if it's an emergency. This place is his own private practice, so he's the only doctor on staff; consequently the wait times may be a bit long. His prices are not cheap, but when are hospital bills ever cheap? You can shop around and find that his prices are actually pretty fair when comparing it to other establishments. I understand some people have gotten into verbal altercations with him over payment, but at the end of the day everyone needs to realize that this is still a BUSINESS. read more

My first meeting with Dr. Appel was during an emergency with my cat Marbles. My family and I observed he was behaving strangley overnight and we took him to see the doctor. My cat had a problem which Dr. Appel was able to accurately determine after a quick look. He is extremely knowledgable. I could not believe how serious the situation was as he explained to me how my cat has a urinary blockage and is not eliminating properly caused by crystals formed by eating dry cat food. I was in shock as this cat was born in my house and I had him his whole life and could not believe his condition was so serious all of a sudden. Dr. Appel explained to me how he will insert a catheter to relieve my cat and observe to see if he will block up again, which he did and Dr. Appel reapplied the treatment again. He saved my cats life and worked out a payment plan for me which I am very grateful for thank you! So for knowing what he is doing and being able to do it well its a 5/5. Unfortunately my cats symptoms were being treated and not the cause. The solution is a surgery which costs more than my ability at the moment so here he is in my home...alive and weaker than before my family awaits on edge as we look for a solution before he blocks up again. read more

Dr, Appel is a wonderful, caring and oustanding vet. I first me Dr. Appel abour 6 years ago when I had first moved from Park Slope Brooklyn into bayridge, I had a beautiful little beagel who had become ill a few months ealier. I had a vet in Park Slope and several visits and several $$$$ later he had no answers to why my beagle was falling ill. I came across Dr. Appel on a Sunday (emergency case situation) and 1-2 days later we found out she had cancer. I am sooooo greatful to Dr. Apell for his quick and amazing knowlege for quickly finding out the cause of her illness. He is compassionate, caring and a true [professionall. We now have another dog (Bull terrier) which has become one of Dr. Appel's paitiens from day one.. We feel 100% confident, safe and are rest assured when Dr. Appel has our boy in for an exam. We hope that Dr Appel stays here in Bayridge for a very, very, very long time. We will defientely follow him wherever he should go. The staff is friendly, courteous and professional. I don't have one bad thing to say about Dr. Appel or his practice. His reception is as great as he is. He's cheaper than any vet I priced out in Brooklyn and any vet I ever went to in the suburbs, and he's so, so good at what he does. He's honest, he's so good with my cat, and he's been nothing but kind to me. I just came from an emergency visit. He took 5 calls while I was there (3 of them while looking at my cat). I'm highlighting this because from what I heard, these calls were all people worried about their pets for emergency or post-surgery purposes. Dr. Appel's reception had gone home at 8 pm. Instead of just letting the phone ring and let people worry, he took his time with EVERYONE. My visit might have lasted 5 or 10 minutes longer because of this, but I didn't mind at all. Each one of those people had an animal they were worried about, and Dr. Appel knows how important that is. I don't know how he stays so patient and kind, because I would be so stressed out if I was him. I'm probably moving out of this neighborhood in a few months, but no matter where I end up in Brooklyn, Dr. Appel will always be my vet. He's worth the extra gas or Uber money. read more

Words cannot express what we feel in our hearts for Dr. Appel's devotion and compassion towards animals and the above and beyond care he has always given to our many pets for more than 28 years. Over the years we have faced some difficult situations. Dr. Appel's experience, knowledge and delivery of information assures us always that we are making the very best decisions. On occasion, when we felt there was not much hope, he extended or saved the life of our pet. Most recently, our large breed 10 year old dog developed a malignant growth on her knee. Our fear was that she could lose her leg. Dr. Appel performed a very delicate surgery successfully grafting skin from her abdomen to her knee. During her recovery, Dr. Appel cancelled prior engagements, stayed at the hospital after visiting hours, came in on weekends and even took her for careful walks himself. We have finally found the honest, kind and informative pet doctor that we've been hoping for for many years. On a Sunday afternoon, we realized something was very wrong with one of our cats. We called Dr. Appel, and we were able to bring our cat in immediately. Surgery was needed, and Dr. Appel discussed the procedure thoroughly with us. He also itemized the costs, informing us of any items that weren't absolutely necessary for this visit, in case money was an issue. Not once did I feel forced into making decisions that I wasn't totally okay with. My cat is now home and obviously feels a million times better. I have received two follow up calls by Dr. Appel's office to check in on his recovery. I couldn't be more grateful to have Dr. Appel in our lives. read more

Dr. Appel has been our vet since the 1980s when I got my first dog. When my husband and I got our dog we decided to continue seeing Dr. Appel even though he is located in Brooklyn and we live in Manhattan. While it seems like some people have not had a positive experience, I always have. While sometimes there can be wait once we are with the doctor he gives our dog Fiero undivided attention and care. He truly loves animals and has always been kind and courteous to us. For example, when we needed medication, he drove the medication to our apartment building from Brooklyn so that we would have it in time. Dr. Appel is a fantastic doctor! He saw us as an emergency weekend case years ago. When the doctor was working on my dog's ear, I knew it was not a pleasant procedure but my girl was wagging her tail - she picked him as her primary care provider. Now he is stuck with us. He performed a spay surgery on my second dog; but unfortunately what was supposed to be a routine procedure turned out to be a complicated case - the little one had infection going on in her uterus. Even though the surgery was quite invasive, the actual cut and stitches were so tiny. Thank you so much! I have taken many animals to Dr. Appel over the years and I have always been treated well and so have my pets. You can always reach him day and night when you have an emergency or just need som reassurance. Sadly we have had to put a few dogs to sleep due to illness over the years and he and his staff have always been very understanding, on the worst days of our life. I had such bad experiences with Dr.Appel. when I was 13 years old, my guinea pig who ran around my house litter trained you would of thought he was a cat became ill. Being that he was such a good pet my mom found this doctor who treated EXOTICS. They took blood gave some anti biotics and shots. A few weeks later he was so sick and we called to see what we should do. He said we had to bring him in and he will test for various cancers. DR. APPEL SAVED MY CAT!!! Our cat, Moo, had ingested a 17 inch long, 1 inch wide satin ribbon!! Before we knew this, we thought he was going to die. Dr. Appel is the most caring and knowledgeable vet I have ever met. I am a certified animal handler for the state, I run a dog day care- and I admire Dr. Appel. He knows his stuff- he saved my kitten's life when another vet was misdiagnosing him- and he treats each animal as if they were his own. He is always running late- ALWAYS.
