We usually come for breakfast but today as our first lunch and we were not disappointed. Their giant onion rings are like no other. Perfect crispy batter on the outside and a well cooked onion on the inside. The Philly Cheesesteak sandwich was perfect! Well seasoned sautéed onions peppers and mushrooms with slices of melty American cheese. It was a toss up between the crinkle fries or tater tots today. I'm so glad we went with the tater tots! Horrible! Incredibly bad! I'm near 60 years old and I'm on the road about 300 days a year and this is the ABSOLUTE WORST experience at a food establishment I've ever had! Whomever is writing positive reviews for this place must have either been dropped on their heads one too many times as a child or they are employees or family members of employees! Make no mistake, the bad reviews are completely justified! To start with, there must not be a health inspector in the San Angelo area because the place is FILTHY--top to bottom and side to side! One look at the ceiling and the A/C vents and you'll think you've stumbled your way into a science project! Stand near the register and you'll see into a kitchen that's dirtier than some dumpsters! Do not delude yourself into thinking that this is just "greasy spoon diner" ambience because it is not, it's a genuine crap hole! I came in on a Thursday at around 9am and I was immediately greeted by one of the two waitresses who said to sit wherever. It is a small dining area, but there was plenty of open tables and a completely open counter service area. I said I wanted to place a to go order and I pulled out the closest counter seat to the register, but the seat was all tore up. I pulled out the chair next to the first chair and it was no better, so I just sat there. I ordered a Hamburger-steak with brown gravy and fried onions and eggs over-medium with home fries and a biscuit. I also ordered a veggie and cheese omelette with home fries and a biscuit with a side of sausage gravy and an additional side of home fries. My order took about 10 minutes and it cost $32.51 and even though it was a to go order, I left a $7.49 tip. On to the actual food. I received 2 large and 2 small styrofoam clam-shell to go boxes and a styrofoam coffee cup with a lid that I was told held the side of sausage gravy. All the boxes were greasy on the outside, but I wasn't too bothered by that because the inside is what counts. One small box had the hamburger steak and gravy and the other small box had the additional side of about 7 home fries. One large box held the two eggs over-medium, about 6 little pieces of potato and a large biscuit. The other large box had the veggie and cheese omelette, another tiny portion of home fries and the other biscuit. The pitiful portions of home fries were barely even warm and they looked and tasted like they were leftover from last week, ranging from stale to rock hard. The 2 eggs were "over" but were nowhere near cooked medium. They were raw, slimy and greasy but they were warmer than the home fries. The omelette was also a greasy mess with a ton of processed cheese and very little of the veggies the menu promised. The hamburger steak was definitely hamburger, but it was tough, stringy and over salted, the brown gravy was barely warm and the onions were raw. The biscuits managed to be both hard and greasy at the same time and as stale as the home fries. The sausage gravy was the final insult. It was a little more than half of a small styrofoam coffee cup of lukewarm warm, gelatinous gloop with 4 little bits of microwaveable-type sausage thrown on top with no sausage actually in the gravy. None of what I ordered was edible and it was a spectacular waste of $40! This is the first time I've ever written a Yelp review in my life, but this joint was just so monumentally bad that all of the above needed to be said! Avoid this place as if your life depended on it! ****EDIT**** The city of San Angelo has a health inspection website that lists Roxie's Diner as having been inspected on 5/8/2025, receiving a rating of 73 out of 100, making this establishment the worst rated restaurant in town for the listed inspection cycle. Spent a very rare Sat-Sun overnight in San Angelo, Texas. Sunday morning found me bent up in my truck. I'm too stingy to check into a motel at 1 AM only to have to vacate the premises by 10 AM, I'd rather save the hundred bucks and just lay back in the cab of my truck with the motor running. I know that sounds dangerous to you, but I've done it all my life and I ain't dead yet and I figure the $5-$10 in fuel spent idling in a parking lot a better investment than risking lice or bedbugs in a no tell motel. My dear brother-in-law told me where to find the best breakfast in San Angelo on a Sunday morning. Roxies. They serve breakfast 6 AM to 11 AM. If I had to compare, I'd have to go back 30 years to those little walk-in diners like the waffle house, where you could go in and get steak and eggs for about ten bucks. Or two eggs over easy, and biscuits and gravy. This morning the clientele was varied, septagenarians at most, the waitress had been there for 20 years, and of all things, a sheriffs deputy refilled my coffee cup. I was raised in West Texas. One of the best ways to rate a place is how many ranch & oilfield trucks you see in the parking lot. Looks like I found the right place for breakfast! Nothing fancy but some legit Tex-Mex options. I opted for Migas- (not Migrtion as the spell check screwed up my picture caption) a classic mix of eggs, cheese, onions, bell peppers and crisp corn tortilla strips. It is a standard in T-Mex breakfasts. Served with refrieds, potatoes and tortillas on the side. The reviews were right-good breakfast served fast and endless coffee. If zero stars was an option id have put it. I havent even gotten my food yet but will finish this when i do. Lets start with ambience, chairs and booth seats are torn, dust and grime everywhere.(Gordon would not be pleased). If its this bad in the dining area, can only imagine the kitchen.
