We had family visiting from Oklahoma and spent the day in Mille Lacs. We were starving on our way back to Elk River and decided to stop in at Rough-Cut. The Saturday prime rib special was one of the deciding factors. Within the first few minutes, we learned that they were completely sold out [mind you it was before 7pm]. The two biggest disappointments were service, or lack thereof, and the amount of time it took for our order to be filled. For context, after ordering, we waited over 45 minutes for our food to be served. And when it did come, it was luke warm and not served at the same time. My husband was nearly done with his meal before I received mine. While completely outside the control of Rough-Cut, we sat, very, very hungry listening to some loud mouth drunk talking about how many girls his friend "banged". Mind you....we were sitting on the restaurant side, not the bar side. Just added to an already bad experience. Rough-Cut needs more and higher quality wait staff and a smaller menu that they can actually fill. Timely and of quality. For extra context, the dining room was busy, but we did not wait to sit down and there were open tables the entire time we were there. My recommendation for those traveling along 169 ....keep going. It's quite expensive, but the food is excellent and you end up with plenty. Most people have to take some home for leftovers. The service is great, and they have a lot of TVs with different programs (mostly sports) to keep you entertained. The pull tab machine is a fun pastime as well. read more

Stopped in on way home from cabin. Nice place, road house style decor and staff were extremely friendly! Burgers and Pulled Pork awesome! Stay away from "French Dip", thick slimy roast beef cut, surprising clunker. Would recommend on way up to or back from Up North. read more

Just out for a Sunday drive and we were getting hungry. Saw this place off 169 and decided to stop. Very good food and it came out really fast too. Service was good and our server very friendly. Fresh ingredients, homemade BBQ sauce (thinking bourbon and honey, delicious!), heck, they even make their own Bloody Mary mix. Husband got said Bloody Mary and I tried it. Pretty tasty but the beer snit was not the greatest. He also got the homemade chili which was really good & chunky as well at the BLT and fries. The BLT was on grilled Texas toast and a good portion of bacon. Really good. I got the steak bite with garden veggie wrap and BBQ dipping sauce and fries. This was delicious. The steak was tender and done exactly how I ordered. The fries are really good too but I asked for very lightly seasoned and they were still really salty. Too salty for me so I didn't eat as many. Overall, really good and would love to eat there again next time I'm up in Milaca. read more

Only reason it's getting a 3 is because of the pulled pork. It's damn good. When your waitress admits that the brisket and steak bites aren't made in the restaurant that's a concern. Yes the portions are huge but it also seemed the steak bite sandwich was poorly assembled and was not worth the price. The Hoss I got was good but it seemed the bigger patty was frozen which was super disappointing. For those who raved about the cheese curds I disagree and will be posting a pic to others can gauge for themselves. These were like shells of batter with cheese inside. Not my style. Fries were good. I liked those a lot. They weren't too crisp or too soggy. Last gripe. Way way too expensive. Came out with a bill that made my wallet hurt and it was only an app and two sandwiches. I expected more. Due to the end of the season and COVID we had trouble finding a place on our trip home. We found this place and were very impressed with the high quality of the food and the preparation. I had the hoss burger, 1/2 pound burgers. Pulled pork , two cheeses, bbq sauce onion rings. Great sauce and overall good flavor. Maybe a little too tall of many people to get a complete bite but it is a lot of food to stack. I cut it in half and even 1/2 had a heft to lift. But most important it tasted good. All burgers were 1/2 pound, so you will not have trouble filling up here. My wife had the classic BLT and said it was a good BLT. Again we felt all the ingredients were quality items. Service was nice. This is just a small bar and grill but it is one that impressed us with its kitchen work. read more

We decided to try this place as we headed north for the weekend with friends. What a gem! The food was tasty and fresh. Service was great and the ambiance was exactly what you would expect in a Northern MN bar & grill. Their emphasis is definitely on the food though. I had the Fire Pit pulled pork sandwich and my bride the steak salad. Their pulled pork was really delicious, moist and well smoked, PILED onto a super fresh ciabatta roll. At the suggestions four server I took the spicy BBQ sauce on the side. Outstanding suggestion! The sauce had quite a snap to it and a little went a long way for me. Our server also brought over their Chipotle BBQ sauce & house made Ranch to try as well. Both were delicious. The steak salad was fantastic too, with a lot of steak. Hit this place up on a mini road trip to the northland, sort of by accident. And man, I'm glad I did! This place is so delicious! Went here with my mom and sisters, and literally everything was so good, we all wanted to come back the next day! The steak bites, wow, so juicy and full of flavor...my mouth is watering writing this review! When we went, dine in was an option, and they followed covid guidelines appropriately, and the waitress was so sweet and friendly and very helpful with any questions we had of the menu! Who knew? I was not expecting such excellent food. Large portions. I ordered the special of the night meatloaf and heck it was enough to feed a family of four. Crazy! My fiancé and I were stranded a bit down the road due to car issues in 6 degree temps. We called to ask if someone could give us a jump, and while the jump was unsuccessful, we were able to get a tow through someone who knew someone. They brought us here and we were were greeted with warmth, welcoming, and concern for our situation. Waitress was very sweet, decent pulled pork and bbq sauce. Ambiance is ok but odd with their renovation, it feels like you're in a box. Other than that I would say way over priced for quality of food. 6:30 on a Saturday night and they were out of prime rib! Frustrating! Smoked" wings are nearly $2/wing and they are just plain old wings with season salt and side sauces, no smoke or grill flavor in the least. Nachos are $15 for primarily tortilla chips with about 4 oz of pork and lots of jalapeños, but the pork and bbq sauce is very good! Steak bites were way over cooked. And you would think a place that sells a salad for $20 would have something better than rubbing alcohol/Karkov gin for rail, or at least warn you when you order! I would've paid twice as much for a decent drink, but instead got charged $9 for something I sent back and drank water instead! So $175 for 4 adults and 2 kids, and three of the adults didn't have an alcohol drink! To think we could've gone out for steaks or seafood somewhere else at that cost! read more

Don't bring your kids. They charge you an arm and a leg to feed them off the kids menu plus extras for drinks... certainly don't go their during peek hours with the kids. We stopped on the way home from Merrifield for a beer and a stretch and found a new go-to rest stop on the way to and fro up north. Service was polite, efficient and she knew the menu. Husband had the smoked wings- he's super picky and loved them. Got with the chipotle bbq sauce and actually tasted like chipotle and the meat was tender and the skin crispy. I had the sappy burger (Sunday special) with peanut butter, bacon and American cheese with fries and I would absolutely get that again. I got a healthy portion of fries and the fries were awesome- just how I like them- thin and crispy, lightly seasoned. The burger was excellent. Good mix of beer on tap. Been here a few times and it's hit or miss. Food is ok tasting. The prices are a little expensive for the taste and amount you recieve. Staff is not very knowledge of beer menu or cocktail menu. Not impressed. I do think the updated decor is very nice. read more
