Would give them 3.5 stars. Agree with some other reviews that the view and atmosphere is nice but not worth the upsale price. We came as a larger group and they were nice enough for us to order from the breakfast menu as they switched over the lunch menu at 11:30am. Our table enjoyed the food but all agreed it wasn't worth the price point. I tried the chocolate croissant with homemade butter and maple bacon jam along with the Canadian bacon Benedict. The chocolate croissant was nice with the maple bacon jam but definitely not worth the price point of $12. The croissant was quite smaller, like the chocolate croissants you can get from Costco or Starbucks. The Canadian bacon eggs Benedict however was delicious and I really enjoyed it! I just am not sure again it was worth the high price point. However I definitely felt the service was missing. As we were the only ones in the dining area, I felt the service was missing the mark. The server saw we were carrying a baby in the restaurant but didn't ask if we wanted a high chair. My mother-in-law spied it in the corner and then we had to ask for it and we proceeded to set it up at the table. As I was with 2 young kids, I ordered some simple items before the main course like their chocolate croissant and fruit cup. I assumed the server would ask if we wanted those ahead of time but that didn't happen. He also had forgotten my son's drink order and which my son actually had to ask him after some time "where's my juice?" My older son had ordered the s'mores waffles and it looked good when it was delivered but as I cut some of it for me to try later on, I soon realized the batter was uncooked in the middle of most of them. I was thoroughly disappointed he had eaten some of it before I discovered it was uncooked. The server throughly apologized and they remade the order which in the end, we ended up taking home with us. They also didn't take the order off the check for us which normally that would happen. For such a classy restaurant, we would think they would know how to make waffles and for more top-notch service. The Rose Tavern located in the renowned Lake House on Canandaigua Lake. The ambiance is beautiful. The staff is welcoming. The bartenders were extremely talented. Steven and Megan are a proper fun duo behind the bar but their skills really stand out. My only negative is HOW EXPENSIVE the drinks are. You have to remember that this is an experience and enjoy every moment but be prepared for a steep bar/restaurant bill. We will definitely be back again. We are locals and have so few lakefront dining/drinking venues that this is a nice place to enjoy the views with a mix of local wines and international, spirits and beers. Cin Cin! read more

This place is beautiful but quite pretentious. Sorry for the long review and petty comments but this was a rather unique experience for me. We arrived at about 4:45 on a Sunday night without a reservation. There was a group of four without a reservation in front of us and another couple. The hostess spent what seemed like five minutes talking with this group, who I think she was trying to turn away, before she finally seated them - it felt very awkward. We were given a reservation for 5:30 though there were maybe a third of the tables occupied. No smiles from either of the the front of house staff, that I saw. We got a drink at the bar - bartender was nice, cocktail was sweeter than I wanted, despite inquiring, but this is probably on me. We were seated at 5:30 and maybe two thirds of the tables were full? There were a ton of staff - I counted at least 15 and they really seemed to be on top of each other. It's great they employ so many people, but it made me wonder why getting seated was a problem for that group of 4 and for us. I ordered the tuna tartare and Parker house rolls and my husband got a smash burger. I swear the food came out within five minutes, before our wine arrived. This leads me to believe the kitchen was not over taxed, it is an open kitchen and there were many people working in there too. The food was fine - rolls were yummy, tartare was a little warmer than I would prefer and lacked much flavor, but it came in a giant bowl that really dominated the table. I didn't go to a ton of restaurants during our Finger Lakes excursion, but this was one of the better ones. My cousin chums and I stopped by here for dinner this past Saturday right when it opened at 5pm (my kind of dinner time). Despite getting there so early there was a short wait/line in front of us, along with some bar patrons who'd clearly been on the premises for a while waiting for the kitchen to open again. Regardless, we were able to easily secure seating in a room with lake views - not their "main" seating area, but almost an atrium-like section; I'm sure it has a very sophisticated name that is beyond me. Anyway. Predictably a lot of nautical, Vineyard Vines vibes throughout, and all of the rooms we ended up in were super spacious, with high barn rafter style ceilings. My palate wasn't feeling too boozy so I just opted for a refreshing nip. I don't see it on the online menu, but it was basically a rose spritz. Perfectly fine and did the job. One of my cousins got a little rambunctious and decided to go with a S'mores Old Fashioned which I tried - definitely too sweet for my palate, but she was quite pleased with it. I tend to like the smokier variations of this drink if you're going to get a little crazy. I'd accidentally grabbed a few burgers on the way up here so I wasn't quite as hungry as I wanted to be - otherwise I very likely would have hit up some of the scrumptious meats I saw being prepped in the open kitchen (the steaks looked pretty legit). Instead I just got the burrata app with I believe a peach puree of sorts. Definitely tasty with a great presentation (everything that showed up on the table looked spiffy and magazine spread ready), and I enjoyed the accompanying bread. This is more of a personal palate issue, but I tend to double-down on the savory when it comes to burrata, rather than dancing around with balsamic reduction and other sweet shizzle, but that's on me. Again, I did not put myself in a position to succeed earlier in the day. The service was pretty good. Our waitress was very nice and offered some personal opinions about the menu (which I always like). She was a little less attentive in the second half of the meal as the place got more crowded, but nothing egregious in that regard. Friday night dinner here which was about 25 minutes from our hotel. Located at the head of the Canandaigua Lake, this place is in the lake house resort which was very nice. We had a reservation for 8:30 and checked in right then. Open kitchen, white shiplap and bright colors. They have an outdoor windowed deck area which is where we sat. For starters we ordered the bread, the burrata with peach jam, and the sticky pork belly. The burrata was good - really liked the peach Jam as an addition that went on the focaccia it was served with. The pork belly was easily the best appetizer we had all weekend. Crispy and chewy and flavorful. Wow. So good. For my meal I went with the ribeye and added carrots and brussel sprouts. The vegetables were great - the sprouts had a sweet and tangy glaze on them. But the steak was about 45% fat and gristle. I know a ribeye isn't a lean cut, but it was over the top with how much chewy parts I had to cut around. For dessert I force-ordered the lemon tart which came with blueberries compote around it. Meh. It was ok. Really lacked flavor and sweet. Our waitress - glasses, shorter, and very friendly - sorry I'm not good with names was great. Played back at us and was really conversational. Would recommend here. read more

Family brunch. Staff was very good. Food was average for the prices of $22-24. Fruit bowl was terrible for $22 in late July. Mostly pineapple and hard unripe honeydew. The octopus was considered a starter but was ample as a main for me. Service was very good. My only complaint is that I made reservations when I checked in tithe Lake House. I was told there were no tables at my requested time of 6 or 6:30 in fact, no tables from . 5:45-7:15. So I said I would go at 5:30. When I arrived the terrace had two tables occupied and no one in the main dining room. I asked for a terrace table and was told it wasn't possible. During the time I was eating, no one else was seated on the terrace. I was seated in a small booth in the middle of the dining room. When I left the restaurant at 6:45 there were still only a few tables occupied. I went out and returned around 7:40 and the dining room was very sparsely occupied and even though the terrace was almost full, there was still room. What gives? read more

The pumpkin tiramisu was my favorite and I liked the different textural components. Never had a pumpkin tiramisu so I really enjoyed it. The budino was also good and came with a snickerdoodle cookie on the side. The chocolate cake had the prettiest presentation, but was overall everyone's least favorite. The chocolate was really rich so it was difficult to eat a lot of it although it was tasty. The blackberry sauce on the side was great and wanted more of it. The cod entree was perfect. The salad starter was seasonal, fresh, local, and wonderful. My non-alcoholic pomegranate lime rosemary spritz was so refreshing on a hot, humid evening. No room for dessert! We weren't staying at the hotel, so we had a snarl from the manager at the reception desk, though we could see empty tables. Waited 20 minutes on a weekday in late June. Lesson learned: Make a reservation! I would give five stars were it not for his attitude. New, young summer staff were obviously inexperienced in table service, but earnest and Iearning. We had a fantastic dinner experience here back in Dec around the holidays! The hotel was not full, the weather was terrible, there had been cancellations and the restaurant was slightly understaffed, but we received fantastic service and the food was amazing. We were a group of 4, and we sat at a table just next to the kitchen, with a great view of the activity and wood fired oven. Other possible seating included booths and tables facing the lake, plus the bar, but we thought our table was pretty perfect considering it was really cold and windy outside. We shared a bunch of appetizers, and all were pretty good - not sure I would 'waste' my stomach space on any of them again, but here's the scoop. First up the crispy rice balls with beef on top - perfect texture and very tasty but I found the beef a little too chewy - for this kind of app, I want it to melt in my mouth. Second was the hamachi collar. This was a main that we decided to share as an app. Usually, the collar is one of the best parts of a hamachi, fatty, moist and flavorful, but these were drier than expected and there was way less meat on the bones. Third, we had the seasoned ricotta cheese spread with toast points - every bit of this was decadent but for 4 people it was not enough bread. No problem - we asked for more bread and got it. Overall, above average, especially considering the uniqueness of each item. Next up, we shared a couple mains because our intention was to have dessert and we wanted to save room - so we got the steak and the pork chop. Both were excellent. The steak came a la cart, so we also ordered roasted potatoes and a side veg (no pics). The pork chop was served over veggies with crispy onions on top. All of the meat was cooked exactly as ordered, and the cuts were great quality. In fact the mains were so good, I decided to go with a full 5 stars instead of taking off a star for the apps. I would get either or both again in a heartbeat. By the time dinner was finished, we had also plowed through 2 drinks each, plus a red bottle of wine, and all decided we'd rather have one final night cap instead of dessert. We were perfectly satiated, not too full, and really happy with the experience. We went to the bar, ordered our drinks and took them into 'the library', where we were the only patrons. We loved the relaxed, cozy vibe in the library, and were able to stay in there, nursing our drinks, til well after the restaurant closed. I'll also say service was fantastic and our server was knowledgeable, informative, attentive and really pleasant. Rose Tavern prioritizes dining space for guests of the hotel, and can be hard to get into; it's definitely recommended to make a reservation up to a month in advance - unless you want to gamble, show up and try to squeeze in at the bar (where you can also order dinner and eat). Last note - the food quality and attention paid to ingredients and plating means dining here can be pretty pricey - dinner for 4 was almost $400 (but that also included a bottle of wine and 8 cocktails) - but I would still highly recommend, especially for a special occasion. read more

Beautiful venue with excellent amenities, but missing attention to the little touches that would make all the difference. Regarding the Rose Tavern at breakfast, this manifested itself in some bizarre happenings, such as the Mexican breakfast bowl being essentially a nacho plate, i.e., giant collection of tortilla chips topped with avocado slices, a few beans, and fried eggs. One would have expected exactly the opposite - a bean, egg, and avocado base, dressed with a few chips for crunchy texture. Or the generally good service that became weird on occasion, as for example bus boys unthinkingly asking whether they could clear obviously empty dishes or provide to-go containers for non-discernible meal remnants. read more
