Stopped for lunch today. The Philly Steak was served on a hard ciabatta roll, which I didn't think would be good. However, its hardness soaked up the juices from the grey, stringy meat. We came here on Easter Sunday as many local restaurants were closed for the day. Not a pleasant experience; everything was way below average, from the watered down Arnold Palmer iced tea, to the overcooked onion rings, and the Turkey Sandwich which was missing the bacon. We stopped by for a late lunch while visiting canandaigua. We had our kids with us and there weren't many options near the water that were casual. I figured this was more of a bar than a restaurant but the outdoor patio was open so we gave it a shot. The bar was pretty busy for a Sunday afternoon. Probably better that we chose to sit outside. The patio is large, tables are spread apart, and it's shaded by trees. I ordered jalapeno burger which was a pleasant surprise. They grilled fish jalepenos as a topping for the burger. I don't think I ever had a grilled jalepeno but these were awesome. It came with homemade chips as a side. Fries were an extra 2.50. that made the burger pretty pricey. My wife ordered the buffalo chicken wrap. She asked for a bunch of substitutions which weren't a problem besides the grilled chicken (which came out fried). Not a bid deal really. Side salad was a good size with a few vegetables on top. The kids meals were amazing. We ordered a grilled cheese with fries and Mac and cheese with fries. The grilled cheese was homemade and delicious. Usually not even a homemade Mac and cheese fan. It was creamy and cheesey. It seemed fresh because the noodles were cooked well too. The grilled cheese was on thick garlic toast. The fries were double fried and fresh. Came with a drink too! Our server checked back several times, refilled drinks without asking, and was good with the kids. I don't know how this place has 2.5 stars. I would definitely come back and would recommend this to anyone stopping by the area looking for a casual place to eat. read more

I've been coming to this location over the years since the '80s. I was really surprised at how great it all was after Murphy's took it over. We went on a Saturday and were greeted warmly. The beer menu was varied and had a good variety of seasonal brews to choose from, many of them local. I had the 1/2 turkey sandwich and reuben soup and both were so yummy. Hot and all fresh. The sourdough bread was also very good. My husband had a burger that was excellent and the fries were battered lightly. We ate those right up. Our waitress was efficient and friendly. Someone ran the food from kitchen to table so we didn't wait long at all. Clean and nicely decorated. I remember the old Colonial and really was happy to see that the place was go well maintained and offered such great food. We will be back! read more

First of all I would like to say I have eaten here many times and the food was great I don't know what happened tonight!!!! I ordered boneless garlic parm bites, I got to well done as in on the verge of being burnt then they had some Parmesan cheese like off to the side. Like where is the garlic park sauce? Why were they burnt? Then I had a house salad and paid extra for mahi mahi on it. I swear it was frozen then unthawed and put on my salad it was cold and didn't looked even cooked! After spending quite some time at a nearby attraction, we were hungry . After a chilly, drizzly and rainy day something warm and comforting seemed in order. We were casually dressed and having passed Murphy's several times this week, decided to give it a try. At 2pm there were few cars in the lot. As we walked up to the hostess stand, the bartender said we could sit anywhere and Joseph would be with us shortly. He was, even before we sat down at a table. Inside the place was clean and looked as I imagined an Irish Pub should. Joseph was quick to tell us what the brew specials were and we ordered quickly as one sounded much to our likening. He also mentioned that the pitcher might be a better value, though we passed as we had a drive back to Naples afterwards. He handed us menus to review while we awaited our beer. It's not a huge menu but definitely had comfort food: Beef on Weck, burgers, Reuben's, smoked turkey sandwiches. Soups, salads and choice of a half sandwich with soup or salad. These may not be dinner options but we found several items that sounded perfect for a late lunch. I ordered the grilled cheese on sour dough bread with tomato soup. Hubs ordered the beef on weck. We really enjoyed our meals and left nothing behind. Before writing this I asked hubs what his rating would be. We both paused as for this type of restaurant and food it's hard to think of it as 5 stars, but we agreed that there was nothing more we could have asked for in the service and food. It was exactly on target. When I read other reviews with bad service I have to wonder if it's just a particular day with problematic help because Joseph was friendly, knowledgeable, engaging and our meal came up more quickly than imagined and the food was hot. The Canandaigua location is a beautiful spot that had been on my visit list for a while. This is a lengthy review because I'm trying to be constructive with my criticism. Every con listed is fixable. The Pros: The homemade chips were top notch. My hot English breakfast tea was nice if not sort of out of place. The seasoned mayo on the "Irish" turkey sandwich was tasty. The Cons, so many Cons: So I came to grab a bite to eat, expecting something like Irish food. ### The Fish Taco It started nice, but the heat on this thing builds too quickly to be enjoyable. I like heat, but this thing just became inevitable by the end of the second taco. This was a real shame because it has a good base flavor. It could have used some more vegetables on it since it had red onion and fish. Save for the heat imbalance; this would have been a tasty dish. ### The Turkey Sandwich There was an "Irish" turkey sandwich that was supposed to have rashers on it. What arrived was a sight short of that target. The bacon was rubbery, so the only flavor came from the seasoned mayo, but if you didn't have that in a bite, it was just dull. - American bacon comes from the pork belly, which is called streaky bacon by some. So a full rack of British/Irish bacon is the pork loin with plenty of pork belly attached to it: the loin section is the rasher, and the belly is the streaky. The pork belly bacon we got was rubbery kind of like microwave bacon. The place was dead slow; there was no reason to mic the bacon. ### Slow kitchen We waited in a dead restaurant for 20 minutes for microwave bacon with turkey lunch meat and two fish tacos. Neither thing takes that long to cook. Perhaps it was the homemade chips that we waited on; they were actually worth the wait, so if so, then cool. ### The ambiance The kitchen had the back door open on a cold day, so the whole place was cold. So much so that our server was bundled up and patrons were commenting. 1990's rock was cool when I was 15, I guess, hardly pub tunes. This place felt cold (literally and figuratively) and unwelcoming when I came in. After eating here, I am sure I am not the target audience. This place appears to be more of a party spot than a pub. To some, that may be the same thing, but pubs are a bit more than that, and Irish pubs are certainly warmer affairs. ### The Menu in General Ok, I get that this is a chef-led "fusion" of Irish and American food, but let's not lie to ourselves about it. This food is nothing more than American food with green fonts, shamrocks, Guinness signs, and some Irish beers. The food was almost anything, but Irish save perhaps the fish and chips, which are available Friday and Saturday only. I didn't look at the menu before I came in, and I really should have. Same stuff I can get almost anywhere often for better value for money. The drink menu was nonsensical, having alcoholic drinks listed with nonalcoholic beverages. I know they were being cute by listing Root beer etc. with other beers, but it just isn't very functional. Fun side note, I got a hot tea (cold day and all), and they didn't even have Irish tea. Cracked me up to grab the English breakfast tea. I almost wanted to buy them a box of Twinings Irish breakfast tea just so they don't embarrass themselves on at least one front. read more

Welp. I had high hopes for this place. Maybe a good steward for our beloved Colonial Inn property after MacGregor's went bad. I tried really hard to like it but this has taken up where bad MacGregor's left off in terms of food quality and service. Is it the same management? I gave this place 3 chances but that is it. I love that deck for a couple drinks and comfort food on a Friday night. However now they are allowing dogs on the deck and people were enjoying their dogs while they ate at a public restaurant - but I did not. From the barking to the woman feeding her dog from her fork (gross!!) this was a huge atmosphere killer. Keep the dogs out of the restaurant, even outside decks. The service was very slow. Not the waitress's fault necessarily. She was nice but her attention was sparse. The kitchen took forever to get even an appetizer out. But I kinda wish it never showed. The buffalo cauliflower was super greasy and over-crunched. Couldn't eat it. The burger was meh. Overall none of the food dishes I had over 3 visits I would consider good. So I'm done. Unless I hear the whole kitchen was replaced and new management. Giving it a mercy 2 stars but wouldn't recommend. read more

I very rarely write food reviews. However, seeing some of the negative reviews... Our server was fantastic! The food was incredible! Yes the service was slower than we would have liked (I'm going with about 15 mins more total). That is a management issue of under staffing. If your not in a huge hurry, understanding that the servers are doing there best and love fantastic food... Highly recommend. I'm sure it will get better. read more

After calling ahead for a table of 7, we were seated with no difficulty upon arrival. The speed of service was another issue entirely. We were ignored by every member of the waitstaff for 20 minutes before a waitress came over to take our order. We got our drinks about 20 minutes later and I have no idea how long the food took because I left with another member of our party, since we had somewhere else to be. 40 minutes to receive anything at any restaurant is completely inexcusable. The remaining members of our party had made sure our meals were comped due to the poor service. It's a shame, I was looking forward to coming here for the trip we took to the area. I have lived in Canandaigua for my whole life. This may be the worst restaurant I have been to here. This city has good food everywhere. Please take my advice and go to any one of them besides here. Food is terrible. Horrible service when they opened and only gotten worse over the years. Gave it a last attempt today with the pork belly and it was the consistency of pudding. I want to love this place, truly I do. It's right around the corner in a great lake facing location. It's home to memories of The Colonial Inn, but it's not. It's a bar/pub with great crunchy beer-battered fish, but terrible service again and again. The decor is so dark, there is so often no one at the front and the rest of the staff seem disinterested. Took about 20 minutes to get our drinks then another 20 until she took our order- we asked how long is food taking from the kitchen and her reply was.. Both the bar and dining area had the lights turned on so bright that it felt more like a diner than a restaurant. Server was very attentive so that was the one positive. Walked in this evening for dinner, a Wednesday night. Place was moderately busy, but not terrible. Several tables were open in the dining room. No one approached us. No one seemed to be working. Waited a good 10 minutes, even walking into the bar to see what was up. But we wanted a table. No acknowledgement. We left, got in the car to see 5-6, what I'm assuming were employees, laughing and smoking on the back steps. So much for greeting customers, huh? Place is destined to fail, I'm afraid.
