You know I love a good hidden gem…read more Old Germantown is just that. We were in the general area-ish doing some shopping and wanted to get some pizza for takeout some place closeby to enjoy at home while watching the Olympics (because it's in Italy--so pizza seemed like just the thing). A search on Yelp brought up this place as somewhat closeby. It was after dark when we went in search of it. We drove down a rural road past what appeared to be a driveway that led to a farm. This can't be it. We tried again. Navigation brought us to the same driveway. My husband was ready to give up. I decided to call the business. A kindly gentleman answered and said--yep! It will look like you're driving to a farm but we're here! As we got closer to the end of the drive we saw a bustling parking area. While it might be hard to find--the people have found it. And, so did we. We entered to find beer hall vibes with tons of communal seating. We asked if we could order to go which they were more than willing to accommodate. We found a couple bar stools at their bar, ordered our salads and pizza, and then enjoyed a couple of stout beers while we waited. The beers, salad, and the pizza straight from their wood fired pizza oven were all fantastic. We got one of their specialty pizzas which was a white pie that comes with ricotta (as well as mozz) mushrooms, and basil on a crust that has just the right amount of chewiness and char. Lovely! The folks working here were above-and-beyond friendly. And, one told us that they have a large outdoor patio during pleasant months. We will definitely be back during the pleasant months. And, let's be real--during the less than pleasant months as well. Get to it!

Upon driving in there is a building for the restaurant along with nice outdoor seating, and area for kids to play! We went in mid May on a sunny but cool evening. The kids loved having the sand area and toys to play with while waiting for dinner to arrive. They have a good menu, but there seemed to be a decent amount of items unavailable especially the sausages my friends wanted to try. We ended up with the spring pizza, sassy pig, a plain cheese, and then a three combo of sausages. I thought the pizza was all good, not the best I've ever had but solid. The spring pizza was my favorite. The sassy pig was very unique but good! Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of the sausages but others in my group liked them. We upgraded that to include fries and there was only a very small amount. We will definitely be back, seems like a great spot for groups!

Water was always filled, drinks came quick, appetizers were perfectly timed. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and it was huge! The fried deviled eggs were "ok", nothing to run back to get as they needed more flavor..... Our table of four ordered the pork chops which are "Wisconsins best" and they truly are, a filet done with Oscar style and two pasta specials. Out of the meal choices the pork chops won hands down. Absolutely amazing!!!! We already said we will be back for them. We ordered a dessert as well, the bananas foster. It was table side and a very fun experience!

As my wife and I walked in, we were amazed by the scale and beauty of the place. The hardwood bar needs to be experienced firsthand to understand how spectacular it is. Then you see the impressive fireplace and the charming dining area, and I was loving it before we even did anything there. We arrived early, so we went to the bar for drinks. My wife, the couple we were with, and I were each impressed with the size of the pours. We ordered a few glasses of wine, a fantastic classic Wisconsin Old Fashioned, and a bourbon on the rocks. The amount we were poured each was impressive, especially compared to other restaurants we've been to lately. The service was fantastic. We were constantly catered to, even though the place was packed. We were each shocked to learn our waitress was new and just starting to fly solo, because she was terrific. Finally, and most importantly, the food was excellent. We started with crab cakes and escargot. Both were absolutely stellar. The salad and bread service were delicious, too, and it was a nice touch that the butter came in slices (we didn't have to unwrap them from foil - a small thing but another plus). When our steaks arrived, each was cooked to the perfectly charred medium-rare we ordered (three NY Strips and one Filet Mignon). Paired with mushrooms, sauteed onions, and some of the largest baked potatoes we'd ever seen, we were in culinary paradise. We will definitely be back, and I imagine many times to come. I haven't had a night that perfect in a long time, if ever.

The Sicilian breaded tenderloin had plenty of seasoning and was much bigger than I expected, tons of food even for my giant appetite. We entered on an early Friday evening and the place was already quite packed. I was somewhat surprised at how small the bar and dining room actually were, but the somewhat eclectic décor made the place feel warm and cozy, even though we were not seated by the fireplace table. Our server, Jane, was nice enough and the service was fairly good, but despite seeing a table next to ours getting a birthday song serenade, nothing was ever said about my groups occasions. Even at the end, when my mom ordered a to-go dessert and I commented on it being a birthday treat, it was never acknowledged. I find that odd and a little irritating. The eggplant sticks appetizer was good, as was the bread and whipped butter. My cod dinner was adequate, with the star being the potato pancake. Mom's Ditka chop was good, but the other two were mixed in their opinions about the Sausage Pepper Vodka Penne. I left the place feeling fairly underwhelmed, I'm afraid. Meh.

Walking into Renard's, my first impression was that it had a romantic fine dining vibe and the room was bright. We were seated at a table with four wooden chairs, and unfortunately, all of us found the chairs extremely uncomfortable. For dinner, we ordered the Caesar salad, soup, olive & sausage pizza, crab fettuccine, French onion burger, and fries. The standout for me was the soup--it was flavorful and had a bold lemon taste that I enjoyed. The cannellini beans and kale made it hearty and satisfying. My husband and I were really disappointed by the olive & sausage pizza. We're pizza lovers but this one was overwhelmingly salty--even after we removed the olives, the sauce and ricotta were still too salty to enjoy. We ended up barely touching it. The crab fettuccine had great flavor, but the texture of the crab was not for me- it was crunchy, possibly from bits of shell. The French onion burger was a hit- big, cheesy, and satisfying. The fries were also great, especially paired with the aioli dip.
