When you walk in, be prepared to choose among hot and cold sandwiches, pastas, salads, soups, desserts, breads, stuffed breads, groceries, catering, and pretty much whatever you want to fill your belly with Southern Italian goodness. One more thing to prepare for when you walk in is a warm welcome from Rosa herself, one of the most adorable characters we've met in a while. Seriously, she was that fantastic. Rosa founded her namesake's deli in 1981 as a family business, and the Wallingford institution is still going strong over 40 years later. Her store was busy yesterday, as we joined a small crowd of walk ins and regulars picking up their phoned in orders. We bought three items that totaled $27.88 - a ham and cheese sandwich on a roll, an Italian combo sandwich on a roll, and a huge spinach and sausage stuffed bread. We each had half of the sandwich for lunch yesterday and will polish off the other halves today. My Italian combo was very good in all respects. The roll was very fresh, the quantity of meats was above average, the pepperjack cheese was great, and the lettuce, tomato and onion garnishes were fresh and plentiful. We dug into the stuffed bread tonight and the two of us shared half of it for dinner. It was a pretty good-sized portion of excellent bread, tender spinach and savory sausage crumbles. This used to be the place to go some time ago. Hadn't been in years but was back and decided to see if it held up. Chicken parm was mid. Kinda soggy. The size was good but you do pay for it. Sauce had good flavor. All in all just OK. Seems like their game slipped a little. read more

I went here for lunch for the first time . I have always wanted to go but I have never been in the area for lunch time . It's a very cute Italian deli for take out. I ordered the eggplant parmesan and added fried peppers on a hard roll. This was amazing! Most places do not make eggplant right however, the sandwich was excellent. It was thin enough and enough breading and the sauce tasted great as well. I would definitely come back just for the eggplant. I also ordered the #6 fresh mozzarella with tomato and roasted peppers, pesto, balsamic and I added pickled eggplant. This tasted great as well. I got my husband a fried breaded flounder grinder. it comes with lettuce, tomato cheese and tartar sauce. He doesn't like tartar sauce, so I had mayo on it instead. He stated that the fish was fresh and tasted good however, it didn't have much flavor. He felt that he would want flavor in the breading in order to order it again. I've had several sandwiches here and all have been very good. Today I had a chicken parmigiana sub. The bread is the same on all subs and is good. The sauce is tasty with the right amount of tang. The cheese is plentiful and tastes like good quality. My only objection today is the "cutlet" while good was cut up pieces , I prefer whole cutlets and it was microwaved so it made it slightly mushy. It's okay. I really want to like this place and have given it numerous chances but every time we do get something we are disappointed. It had been a while so we came back today and got the #3 chicken cutlet and the real Italian. Chicken cutlet here isn't crispy, which is a must for me and my husband. Good flavor but not crispy. The real Italian had one slice of each meat. I couldn't even taste it. My daughter got a turkey wrap with just turkey and cheese that looked good. Visited here for the first time the other day, but my mother has been raving about this place for years. Good selection of meat and cheeses for slicing and sandwich making along with hot dishes, soups and salads. Glass case has a great selection of pasta and other salads, stuffed breads, frozen pastas, and some scrumptious looking sweets and desserts. They also have pignoli nuts! I opted for a large chef salad to go along with a bowl of chicken and pastina soup. Although I requested Swiss or provolone instead of American cheese, the salad was made with American. I easily replaced it when I got home and there was enough for 2 generous salads. The soup tasted of homemade goodness with large chunks of chicken and simple ingredients. This place hasn't changed at all over the years. This is still a super consistent spot to grab Italian deli sandwiches that are so delicious. What a disappointment. Ordered a meatball sub. Got a nice long sub roll, but where is the meat. Being a Italian deli I was expecting homemade meatballs. What I got were meatballs the size of golf balls. They taste like the frozen ones that come out of a bag. One bite of bread with sauce, one bite of meat, one bite of bread, one bite of meat. "Nonnie's Chicken Pastina Soup" Who would have thought that a soup could bring me back to my childhood. I picked up lunch at Rosa's Deli and it turned out to be way more than just an enjoyable meal. When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to eat was Nonnie's chicken pastina soup and I felt like she made it for me today. When the soup was almost ready to add in the pastina, she would pick a part the chicken and put it back into the broth. But she would always set aside the chicken necks for her and I to pick on. I know, I know, you may think that's gross, but it was the tastiest part of the chicken. Rosa's soup was Delizioso !!! I also had the #2 specialty sandwich. Chicken cutlet, provolone cheese, roasted red peppers, and pesto on a hard roll. Words cannot express how tasty this sandwich was. The pesto really made this sandwich special. I spent over $40 in there today. I got a quart of the "homemade" chicken pastina soup, which let me tell you is canned Progresso home style chicken soup. I took one bite and instantly knew. I love soup and am a huge soup person it's so disappointing when this sort of thing happens. Secondly, I got a prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich which they put vinegar on when i never asked for it. Understandable simple mistake which i don't fault them for. Then I got a roast beef sandwich which is always off the charts, but I also have had better it's not as rare as I would like I definitely got the end. Ah, Rosa's. It's a Wallingford tradition. While I do believe Vinny's is the best Deli in town, Rosa's is on the same level. Quite honestly, they have the best hot sandwiches in town. I've yet to sink my teeth into a better chicken parmesan or meatball grinder (I'm a simply guy, what can I say?) in town. Like many Italian Deli's, it also doubles as a mini-market. The staff here is very friendly, which offsets the nightmarish parking, but what can you do for perhaps the busiest section of route 5? Rosa's reminds me of why I love New England towns. Wallingford. It's a great community. Parts of it are always growing and changing, yet parts of it have stayed the same. There is much beauty in this part of Connecticut. I have a great love for Rosa's because you just have to. That's it. I lived in Wallingford for a couple of years when I was a girl, and going to Rosa's to get a grinder was just a thing. I moved again out of Wallingford and it wasn't until I got a job in this town that I remembered how much I used to love Rosa's. Personally, when it comes to usual deli sandwiches, I find they are pretty impossible to make poorly. Rosa's uses Boar's Head meats which are really great quality, and she has fresh bread which is always a plus. If we want to talk about food, we have to discuss hot grinders, sandwiches and dinners. They are simply the best. Her meatballs are fantastic. The chicken parm. dinner is delectable and on the one occasion which I order a ravioli dinner, it was also delicious but the thing is- it's Rosa's. To me it felt unnatural because I'll always remember what it was like stopping here before summer camp and getting a sandwich for lunch. Nowadays, my tastes are a bit more polished and rather than bologna and cheese, I (very constantly, might I add) order the #3 chicken cutlet special (a to-die-for sandwich on rosemary foccacia bread with breaded chicken cutlet, lettuce, tomato, provolone, avocado, mayo and if this sounds great to you, be sure to mention that you want balsamic glaze and thank me later) but this is the same friendly place that remembers your name, knows your order, and calls you sweetie when you walk in. I've been going here for years. Love love love Rosa's. However I think they slipped a little bit during the week. Or at least on Wednesdays. My food is great I have to say. Always very fresh ans tasty. They have made the grinders quite small compared to the last few years. Italian combos not worth it to get because it's all lettuce. ALthough I will say it depends on who makes the food. Usually I have great luck with pretty much everyone except this one Spanish woman who looks miserable all the time. Anytime she touches anything of mine it gets screwed up or just poorly made. So I try to avoid her. Everyone else is usually on point. For the price the food is really good. I have yet to try the veal parm dinner but everytime my buddy gets it i drool over it. read more
