When you have to get up early...good coffee is necessary. Tried a spot on my to do list today. Only two regrets. That I haven't been here sooner, and that I got a small. @rootsroasting in Saint Paul knows what's up. I legit was sad I didn't get a large coffee here. No worries I'll be back. I went with a simple vanilla iced oat milk latte and loved it. The beverage was wonderful. I can't drink coffee later in the day if I want to sleep, which is probably a blessing in disguise because I'd have gone again for another. read more

Stopped in this morning and I'm so glad I did! There was free street parking available, which made visiting super convenient. The line wasn't too long when I arrived, so I didn't have to wait long to place my order or receive my drink. I ordered the rose water latte with oat milk, and it was absolutely delicious! beautifully made, subtly sweet, and perfectly balanced. I also tried the almond croissant, which was incredibly flaky on the outside and soft and buttery in the middle. The customer service was friendly, the space was clean and welcoming, and overall it was such a good experience. I'll definitely be stopping in more often! read more

One of my favorite local coffee shops!! The coffee itself is great, but they also have lots of fun special drink options. I also LOVE that they stock Brake Bread Pastries, the Cardamom Spinner is everything!!! It is really cozy and welcoming inside, but it is small! read more

There's crazy road construction a block down but I've made the drive here twice now. Great lattes. First time, I got the small latte and it was delicious. Second time, I ordered the large latte and that's usually where other coffee shops error with an unbalanced, uneven cup. I'm not sure if the ratio is thrown off but large lattes are almost always too diluted(??). Is that a thing? But worry not...small and large sizes are the same quality here at Roots. I bought a bag of beans too; excellent for home pour overs. read more

This place is fab! Plenty of street parking where they are located on a corner lot. The inside gives this small but intimate feel while maintaining good space. I tried the "Something Fun" which featured cinnamon and caramel and was sooooo good. Also had a chocolate croissant that was perfectly prepared and full of flavor. Great spot, definitely recommend! read more

My go to neighborhood coffee shop. Coffee is always fresh and delicious. Excellent pastries. My favorite is the kouign-amann which was a surprise find in such a small shop and baked to perfection. The bakery section is small and often sells out so get here early! There is also a small selection of coffee and coffee making gadgets on sale. Free street parking easily available. read more

Another great indie coffee place out of the main view from Snelling on St Clair. They have their own roasters, the baristas warm and friendly. The place is busy and quiet with softer background music. There was limited seating so I grabbed the last stool by the large windows. There were only cookies available by early afternoon and I didn't see any other food options. read more

#14 in my TWIN CITIES COFFEE SHOP SERIES One of the best vanilla oat milk latte's I have ever had ($5). First off, it is already a plus when coffee shops do not charge extra for milk substitutes. Lactose and vegan people should be able to enjoy their coffee without having to pay extra! Second, their vanilla syrup is homemade w/ real vanilla beans. It makes the latte extremely tasty and sweet. You know it's good because you can actually see the vanilla bean flakes in the coffee! They also have all the traditional coffee shop drinks (cappuccinos, matcha lattes, espressos, etc). For the vibes, they were pretty simple. A few tables around and a bar table w/ stools by the window. A great spot to get some work done but not outrageously aesthetic compared to other coffee shops. But that latte really sold me!! Thank you for making a mean vanilla bean syrup. read more

A trendy little neighborhood coffee spot! The coffee is very high quality. The staff are amazing and always super friendly. Though you can't bring your dogs inside, they do have treats for your furry pals. They usually have some baked treats as well. They now offer a re-usable mug service which is super awesome! My only complaint is that their lattes are usually barely warm - you'll never burn your lips, but you'll end up with a room temp latte. read more

Great service and excellent scones! Visited from out of town and this spot was near my VRBO. Did not disappoint.

Roots Roasting is still quite great! There's a lot of street parking available just around the corner of the block. I ordered the "something fun" latte, which changes often. It was really good! I also tried their featured ice tea, and enjoyed it after I added sugar. The service is amazing! Although, the drinks are a little slow to be made. However, this matches the laid back vibe of the shop and I wasn't in a rush at all. Once again, I was awed by the sustainability commitment. It's a big part of why I choose to support this business. I appreciated all the compost bins, the compostable straws, the use of in-house mugs, and the to-go cup return station (optional). Last time I noted the radio was a bit loud and mostly a talk show, which was distracting. This time was much different. The radio was possibly playing music at a low volume. It was a great study environment! Mask are requested and provided. I noticed employees wearing masks and about half of the customers wore masks. read more

Visited Roots Roasting on a Saturday morning with 2 of my friends. I think there is a parking lot in the back bit I'm not sure because I did do street parking. We did want to sit down at this coffee shop but due to COVID they had removed their indoor seating. Luckily it was nice out so we were able to walk outside with our coffees. I ordered a dirty chai and it was good. Both my friends ordered cold brews with vanilla and oat milk. Unfortunately both of their drinks did not get the oat milk they requested. Overall this is a good coffee shop. I wish they had indoor seating and more options but the coffee was good and the staff was nice. read more

How many coffee shops are playing the SONICS on the stereo and serving amazing lattes. Fun to stop here for coffee. We had lattes in the grass around the side of the building cause it was sunny. The lattes were so good we went back in and bought some coffee for home and we have been loving the beans we bought at Roots.. The staff was super nice and chatted with us about other coffee shops in town we should check out.. How cool is that to help promote other competitors in the community! I loved it.. They were super nice, playing great music, and the coffee ruled! They have other coffee stuff to buy as well, so if you want to brew at home they got you covered there too. And they had VEGAN brownies.. 5 star for sure! read more

First amd foremost, the coffee was great. The roast wasn't too string but wasn't weak, you could call it the goldilocks of coffee roast. Got the "Something Fun", which today was a cinnamon and honey latte. I'm making an assumption that changes on a rotating basis. One of the biggest reason for the star loss was lack of flavor options. Vanilla was pretty much it. If you're looking for a plain roast bean brew though, this is probably the right place for you. read more

Dropped in for a treat after boosting up at St Paul Corner Drug, and wow: This place is great! Lovely space (high ceilings = more air), friendly & knowledgeable owner, and HOTDAMN the vanilla latte is good. "Vanilla latte? How basic!" you may think. But AU CONTRAIRE, reader: They make that sucker with real live vanilla paste. The milk is steamed perfectly -- or, in my case, oatmilk. (Do you know often lesser baristas scorch the hell out of oatmilk?) And the espresso is glorious: nuanced flavors without any hint of burn or bitterness. If I lived within walking distance, I'd probably be in every single morning. Roots Roasting is my new favorite coffee in St Paul! read more

Roots is a small little shop that does niche well. You are greeted by a sleek and aesthetic interior that also showcases their small roastery in the back. Nestled in the St. Paul summit area, this coffee shop is a great place to get some work done or just to have a quiet sit down and e joy some coffee. I ordered a Yemini sourced pour over and was excited to see the coffee from a country that does coffee so well but often isn't publicized. The coffee was smooth and delicious- I will definitely be here again soon! read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Roots Roasting! The barista was very friendly and helpful and recommended me perfect addition to my drink. I ordered an iced latte with oat milk and simple syrup and it was so good that I came back the next day and ordered it again! I loved the bright and open atmosphere of the space and appreciated that they had all gender restrooms and compost bins. I loved that their to-go cups, straws, etc were compostable and that it doesn't cost any extra to order a drink with a milk alternative. Their pricing is also competitive and reasonable. Definitely would recommend to anyone in the Macalester-Groveland area! read more

What a great little coffee shop. Owner is friendly and helpful. I wasn't sure what I wanted but with a few questions he suggested I first try an espresso drip. Wow. One of the best cups of coffee I've had in long time. Nothing fancy. Nothing to hide behind. Just great coffee and served the way God meant coffee to be....hot, strong and black. No pastries yet but he said that the pastry cabinet is on its way and supplier contracts are being ironed out so in a week or two you can enjoy a sweet bite with your brew. read more

Pete owns a small chill coffee place that roasts beans on-site. We had a great conversation about roasting coffee beans and how he landed in the business of saving souls in the morning, while the Daptones were playing through the speakers. Pete said, "I brew coffee here that you can brew at home." He doesn't brew coffee or create espresso drinks via high-end appliances, because people don't have them at home. Pete creates liquid black magic with a smile using standard coffee machines. The dude is a roasting magician, go say hi. read more

Stopped in here for the first time today, and the space is pristine, the bathroom was clean, the coffee was serene, the person serving it was super nice (not mean). Ordered an espresso with a hint of added hot water, and it was a very quality espresso. Also purchased a bag of Indonesian blend that was roasted there just four days previous (which I'm enjoying an espresso of at home right now as I type this review) and the Indonesian blend is one of the finer bags of beans I've gotten in a while. And the price was very reasonable at $14 (with tax). Speaking of tax, another thing I like about this place is that the prices are with tax included to a rounded number, so you don't have a bunch of pennies/small denomination change after purchasing something. Will definitely be back to try some more of their in house roasted coffee bags. read more

Roots is my ideal coffee shop! Croissants & pastries from my favorite bakery in the cities, Marc Heu, amazing coffee, friendly and knowledgeable baristas. On this hot, humid morning on the 243rd birthday of this nation, being without espresso-grind coffee to make my own at home, and being too soon to consume some of the cold-press coffee I started last night, and after calling to make sure they're open, I walked the few blocks to Roots to try their cold-press coffee and get some beans ground for espresso in the upcoming days. I've stopped at Roots a few times since they opened in order to get some coffee beans ground, a request which they've cheerfully obliged each and every time (unlike a Spyhouse). I've found that I get a superb grind at a coffee shop vs. doing it myself at a grinder at a grocery store. That Braun electric bean grinder just does NOT cut it (unintended pun). This morning I was cheerfully greeted by Zoe, the woman who pleasantly answered the phone when I called. There were only a few people in the shop and it felt very calm to be in there with the music playing quietly. The owner was busy at the back of the work area doing some coffee-related task, and he looked up to acknowledge me and observe his shop front. I felt "seen". I asked for "light ice" in my cold-press coffee so that I didn't get a cup full of it, and declined a plastic lid. The 12-oz. plastic cup of cold-press coffee cost $3.75. Today, they served a blending of Brazilian and some other sourced coffee. It was flavorful and smooth. After a few sips, I decided I wanted a little sweeter flavor and asked about the light brown liquid inside the bottle on the counter by their cream carafe. Zoe said it was simple syrup made with "raw" sugar. Rhonda G. would REALLY appreciate this amenity! The two tips-of-the-bottle I poured were the perfect amount of sweetener in my coffee. Zoe accepted my beans and ground them to the fine espresso texture I requested and I know it'll be perfect - as it's been in the past - for my stovetop espresso either tomorrow or a few days from now - it depends on the outcome of the cold press currently "brewing" in my refrigerator (my first time making it, and made with beans poorly ground in the home grinder). I'm thankful for the location of this wonderful coffee roasters shop and will return again and again. read more

Such a perfect spot for coffee shop-inviting atmosphere with tables and bar type seating. The staff is very friendly. The tables all have a small coffee plant on them and the art work teaches you about coffees and growing it. The excellent coffee is freshly roasted and beans for sale. I'm a fan of this small local coffee shop with big personality! Stopped by a few weeks after the grand opening and was greeted by the owner himself. I love this coffee shop. Coffee is spot on and made with care. The owner is friendly and passionate about his coffee. He prefers to teach someone how to make their own great coffee at home, to open the accessibility of craft coffee to those who might be intimidated by the hipster culture of snobbery that surrounds it. He's very down-to-earth and very knowledgeable. The rest of the staff is so welcoming, you feel like an instant regular when you walk in the door. The music isn't obnoxious or loud and good for studying or reading. It's a nice and bright space. The bathrooms are gender neutral. They don't have much for food selection--just a small selection of pastries. They're from Patisserie 46, though. They roast beans for purchase(!) and have a decent selection of supplies to get you started at home. read more
