Small latte.
Alex X.

There's crazy road construction a block down but I've made the drive here twice now. Great lattes. First time, I got the small latte and it was delicious. Second time, I ordered the large latte and that's usually where other coffee shops error with an unbalanced, uneven cup. I'm not sure if the ratio is thrown off but large lattes are almost always too diluted(??). Is that a thing? But worry not...small and large sizes are the same quality here at Roots. I bought a bag of beans too; excellent for home pour overs.

My go to neighborhood coffee shop. Coffee is always fresh and delicious. Excellent pastries. My favorite is the kouign-amann which was a surprise find in such a small shop and baked to perfection. The bakery section is small and often sells out so get here early! There is also a small selection of coffee and coffee making gadgets on sale. Free street parking easily available.

Chocolate Croissant

This place is fab! Plenty of street parking where they are located on a corner lot. The inside gives this small but intimate feel while maintaining good space. I tried the "Something Fun" which featured cinnamon and caramel and was sooooo good. Also had a chocolate croissant that was perfectly prepared and full of flavor. Great spot, definitely recommend!

Another great indie coffee place out of the main view from Snelling on St Clair. They have their own roasters, the baristas warm and friendly. The place is busy and quiet with softer background music. There was limited seating so I grabbed the last stool by the large windows. There were only cookies available by early afternoon and I didn't see any other food options.

A trendy little neighborhood coffee spot! The coffee is very high quality. The staff are amazing and always super friendly. Though you can't bring your dogs inside, they do have treats for your furry pals. They usually have some baked treats as well. They now offer a re-usable mug service which is super awesome! My only complaint is that their lattes are usually barely warm - you'll never burn your lips, but you'll end up with a room temp latte.

vanilla oat milk latte ($5)

#14 in my TWIN CITIES COFFEE SHOP SERIES One of the best vanilla oat milk latte's I have ever had ($5). First off, it is already a plus when coffee shops do not charge extra for milk substitutes. Lactose and vegan people should be able to enjoy their coffee without having to pay extra! Second, their vanilla syrup is homemade w/ real vanilla beans. It makes the latte extremely tasty and sweet. You know it's good because you can actually see the vanilla bean flakes in the coffee! They also have all the traditional coffee shop drinks (cappuccinos, matcha lattes, espressos, etc). For the vibes, they were pretty simple. A few tables around and a bar table w/ stools by the window. A great spot to get some work done but not outrageously aesthetic compared to other coffee shops. But that latte really sold me!! Thank you for making a mean vanilla bean syrup.

Roots Roasting is still quite great! There's a lot of street parking available just around the corner of the block. I ordered the "something fun" latte, which changes often. It was really good! I also tried their featured ice tea, and enjoyed it after I added sugar. The service is amazing! Although, the drinks are a little slow to be made. However, this matches the laid back vibe of the shop and I wasn't in a rush at all. Once again, I was awed by the sustainability commitment. It's a big part of why I choose to support this business. I appreciated all the compost bins, the compostable straws, the use of in-house mugs, and the to-go cup return station (optional). Last time I noted the radio was a bit loud and mostly a talk show, which was distracting. This time was much different. The radio was possibly playing music at a low volume. It was a great study environment! Mask are requested and provided. I noticed employees wearing masks and about half of the customers wore masks.

Big fan of this coffeeshop. The drinks are good and the baristas are friendly and have good vibes. They don't have a ton of tables but the space is will lit with natural light with good access to outlets. Mostly quiet so it's a good place to get work done. Street parking is also pretty easy to find around the area

Just nah!! $7 for a small iced macha tea full of ice could taste macha was low quality. If you are going to be more expensive than Starbucks at least offer better value.

Perfection as always! Even at 5:45pm and a half caff.. chefs kiss. Ambiance is.. always where the cook kids are but they are weirdly accepting cool kids.

I adore Roots Roasting baristas. (I also really really like their coffee.) they are all So cool. So friendly. So stylish. So the kind of folks I want to be best friends with! Through my first Minnesota winter, under the confines of COVID-19, The Roots crew were my life line. Sometimes these lovely people were my only non familiar contact for days. Thank you for being a friend, then, now and into the future.

Best coffee in the TC, in my humble opinion. Only outdoor seating during COVID, but very safe feeling inside while ordering. Support!!!

That big dollop of whipped honey on top is unreal. The space itself is great for getting work done. Lots of natural light, big open windows, and different seating options that makes it feel really inviting. It can get pretty busy during peak times, so finding a seat can be a little tricky but they have a shared table system where you can grab a card if you're open to sitting with others. It's such a fun, community-focused touch and a great way to meet people or just make space when it's crowded. The staff is super kind and welcoming, which makes it even better. Thanks to @quixoticcoffee in Highland are of St. Paul I had never been here and was surprised by how cozy it was and how many people were hunkered down working, visiting, relaxing etc. there were lots of spaces to find a cozy spot solo or with others. This place is adorable and perfect to loose track of time and enjoy a coffee. I tried a simple iced vanilla latte, the coffee was really good and will definitely be back again for a brew. Also got a warmed up chocolate croissant to go. (if you're not asking for it warmed up...you're missing out) accidentally smooshed it in my purse but it was still warm and delicious. Love finding cozy new spots like this especially on cozy weather days. Find some simple thing in your day today to slow down and enjoy a little more.

I do like the fact that they will use black or green tea with any of their drinks. I'm not a green tea fan, so that's an important option for me. I got a black fruit tea with pineapple and passion fruit with strawberry popping bobas. The tea had a perfect blend of flavors and the boba was cooked just right. We also got a cookies and cream smoothie with tapioca. My son said it was the best one he's had! He also got a banh mi. He said it was good, but not great. The pork could have been more flavorful and it needed more cilantro. Overall, I recommend this place! Give them a try!

The aesthetic is not the typical cutsie boba shop vibe. It is elevated, sort of Tuscan garden with comfortable wicker furniture, gorgeous and ample seating, outlets along the wall and plants everywhere. I stumbled upon this place while praying and hoping for a quiet place to finish my workday. I could not have been more fortunate as the owner was taking a middday music break, allowing complete peace as I worked and sipped on my tea. Now I have absurdly high standards when it comes to see. The medium versus large is a mere $0.50~ difference so go for the large. I forgot to request light ice, but guess what!?!? The ice was light and the tea and boba heavy. The perfect proportion and bang for my buck. Okinawa bubble tea had chocolate-y notes and was excellent. Without ordering any cheese foam, my milk tea was rich and creamy. And did I mention they have a ginormous me-sized replica of my bubble tea!?!? It's just chef's kiss all around.

Owner Steve is the master at roasting coffee beans and he roasts right on site at this coffee shop. I've been coming here for years and continue to come here because the coffee is just that damn good. I can always measure the quality of a cup by ordering up a hot latte and fell in love from the first sip. Try the "Saratoga" hot (latte with honey and vanilla). Thank you Steve and team for a fabulous place that always feels like my home away from home. Wonderful outside patio area and all the customers here that I run into are always the friendliest! Don't expect fancy artwork on your drink - but if the roast and vibe are your thing, this is THE PLACE to get a good cup! Tons of coffee from around the world roasted on site for purchase as well. My girlfriend recently purchased an espresso machine and I treated her to J&S Bean Factory's Espresso Blend which for me is where it all begins. Hands down amazing place. I have been to so many coffee shops over the years, many from the Seattle area and everywhere in between and J&S still stands out above all of them for the simplest reasons - the coffee just tastes fabulous and I never leave here disappointed. They have a huge variety of beans, and they will grind them for you if you like. The shop is small, and it has that awesome coffee aroma inside and out, but their coffee is plenty expensive. Also, be warned that if you're the type of person who likes to enjoy their coffee without politics, you might be somewhat put off by the Liberal-forward vibe of this shop, what with some of the coffees being named after Liberal politicians, ie "Obama Blend" or as others have mentioned here a coffee named after Bernie Sanders. The staff at the shop were always polite enough to me, and I never experienced name calling as another reviewer did, but then I don't wear my politics on my sleeve or confront others about theirs. After all, I only went there to buy coffee, not change the world or anyone's philosophical, political, or religious views. Recently, (January 2026), I drove the 15 some-odd miles to their shop only to find they had closed that day to attend protests in a "No Work, No School, No Shopping" strike due to law enforcement activity in the cities. I enjoy supporting local small businesses, but the "Politics First, Customer Last" business model doesn't work for me. Besides, I feel like they must be doing pretty well financially if they can just close up shop unannounced without so much as a notification on their website or phone answering message to warn customers who might actually be driving a fair distance, burning real gasoline which costs real money, to buy their stuff. I liked their coffee, but it just isn't worth the expense or inconvenience to me anymore, so I go elsewhere.
