I love Roots Cafe! It's a great brunch spot in West Chester. I think what sold me on this place is its charm. It's tiny, cozy, and quaint (note: might not be the best place for large groups). The restaurant has a warm feel to it. I felt like I was dining in someone's home! I especially love Roots Cafe in warmer months because their outside patio area is simply amazing. You'll be surrounded by greenery and flowers. They also have umbrellas on select tables which is great for some shade when it gets too hot. The food was delicious. I ordered the brioche French toast topped with berries, whipped cream, local honey and bee pollen. There is a gluten free option for $2 more. The presentation was nice, too. I walked into the restaurant having not been here for two years. I used to frequent this restaurant when I lived in WC. The minute I walked into the dining area, I knew this place changed ownership. They painted over everything. The once colorful walls are now all beige. All artwork had been taken down. I asked, and the server confirmed my speculation. It sold in April, apparently to one of the old chefs. Let's roll back to my initial entrance. First, this place used to be busy in the summer months. Line out the door kind of busy waiting for a table. It was dead on a Sunday at prime time brunch hour. Always a bad sign on a gorgeous day in town. It didn't appear that there was a host. There were two employees trying to seat people but they weren't communicating and it was awkward. We finally sit down in the dining room as the outdoor seating was full. Service was just really really bad. We weren't acknowledged for a good 15 minutes. A table sits down after we got in. They got water and ordered before we even got water. We made the deal that if a server didn't come in 5 minutes we were going to leave. Finally, a server came just before my 5 minutes were up. I wish we just would have left. The menu was b.o.r.i.n.g. It used to be eclectic and the food options used to be great. I got breakfast tacos and I could have made them at home. Nothing we ordered was spectacular. Nothing made me feel like I was eating farm to table food. There was only one sweet menu selection. There needs to be more variety other than savory food if you are serving brunch. And I'm talking more than ala carte options. I was also really confused why they have zero decorations and got rid of the colorful paint and chalkboard paint. It felt more authentic and farm to table when I could see where my food was coming from (they used to list the farms on the chalkboard). Overall this restaurant has become a thing of the past. The service is terrible. Food is average. And this restaurant no longer is special. I wouldn't return. And I suspect if it continues like this they won't last. read more

Delicious food with generous portions. My favorites are their breakfast sandwiches and breakfast potatoes, but everything on the menu looks delicious. The wait staff was pleasant and very helpful. Loved this place. Unique cafe that sources most (if not all) of their menu items from local farms. Refreshing atmosphere compared to similar restaurants in the area. Service was excellent. Our waiter, Morgan, knew the ins and outs of the menu, was able to describe the specials perfectly, and answer any questions we had. Patio seating was just as good. You are able to see the produce that they grow for the kitchen as well as their coy pond. To top it all off was the food! Everything was very fresh and tasted fantastic. Oh be still my southern living heart! This place is just charming. I mean there really is nothing else like it. My boyfriend and I ventured in on a Sunday in the early afternoon. That was our first mistake. This place gets packed and stays packed all day long. If you want less of a wait definitely try to come earlier in the day. They close at 3 so you'll feel less pressure to get in before the cut off. I ordered the A.L.T. which has avocado, lettuce, and tomatoes with some pesto mayo thrown on for good measure. It was a damn good sandwich and I wish I was eating it right now. I had mixed greens as my side. They definitely made the dressing in house and it was an amazing vinaigrette. I had a side of their cornbread and as a southern gal I must to say it was excellence in each bite. It is very small so you might feel a bit cramped. Try to get a window seat if you are prone to claustrophobia. In my opinion though, the hustle and bustle of the waiters and waitresses mixed with the food coming in and out gave it a lively presence in such a demure atmosphere. I highly recommend this place. We were in town from FL for a wedding. The place is small and was crowded but we were seated quickly. Coffee was nice and hot, Bloody Mary was delicious and served with beef jerky in it (file under YUM). Hubby had a beautiful French toast platter and I had the pork belly eggs Benedict. Came here for a late breakfast with my son. It was a gorgeous day and we asked to be seated outside. Loved the ambience with a cute garden and fresh, creative food with quite diverse selection. Been coming here for awhile. Today was my last time going here. Ended up having a bad lactose reaction. I can usually handle butter and light milk, felt like I ate gelato. The bacon was burnt not once but twice. The food was overpriced. Too much of heavy seasoning on everything especially the sausage. Water was gross too. Ended up paying $54 my fiance only ate 2 tacos and I ate the eggs and 2 orange juice, left the rest. Didn't seem like a manager was even around. Our waitress tried to help as much as possible but it obviously wasn't her fault. Roots Cafe is delicious!!! If you're passionate about farm to table, this is the place for you! I had the Vegan Shepard's Pie which was amazing! The portobello mushroom on the bottom of the Shepherd's Pie was one of the best mushrooms I've ever had (and I really like mushrooms). Simple yet nuanced food, compact brunch menu. I ordered the ALT (Avocado, Lettuce, fried Tomato, garlic aioli on multigrain bread) with a side salad. Filling, delicious, uncomplicated. Veggies in the salad sliced almost paper thin (love that!), the dressing a perfect light accompaniment to the greens. My companion savored his Superfood Hash (seasonal vegetables, sweet potatoes, 2 poached eggs with salsa verde). Tried Roots for breakfast and all the food was delicious. We got the breakfast pork belly burrito and the quiche of the day (carrots, onion, roasted red peppers). Both were well cooked, not greasy. A friend invited me here for brunch recently. She was very excited because she had either eaten here once or heard about it and I was excited because food. The service was good, I think our server was Molly. Place is cute, I only saw the waiting hallway and the front dining room. I like that they have a lot of vegetarian / vegan options. I was able to get a bloody mary without bacon, which is appreciated. I got the pina colada french toast which was a special. It had coconut cream and caramel drizzle. It was good, but not out of this world good. I would definitely try something else on the menu if I came back. I only say if because I usually don't frequent WC, I think the place is quite lovely. I really enjoyed that they take your order and swipe your credit card on an ipad right in front of you. I think its out dated that servers take your card and walk away. read more

We ate brunch at Roots Cafe and we did enjoy ourselves! The homey environment was our favorite part of the experience. We were seated in the bar area and it was very cozy. Service was friendly! Prices are fair. Food was good, but seemed a bit reminiscent of a great diner. We were hoping for a little bit more flare out of the experience. My husband reserved us a table at Roots for my birthday...unfortunately he booked it for the same day as the big Christmas parade, so parking was a nightmare. We called the restaurant, but they weren't able to provide any suggestions. Luckily, we found a spot and hiked over to the restaurant. We walked in and stood in the entryway for quite a bit of time - given the set-up (you can't see the dining area from the entry), I almost thought they were closed! Eventually we were taken to our seats. Our table was one of two in their little "bar" area - but these are bar tables, with backless seats. While I'm all about eating in the bar area, it wasn't what I was expecting for a nicer dinner. And it wasn't very comfortable after a few minutes. I don't hold this against the restaurant, as it appears they give a choice on opentable, so maybe my husband said high top was okay, but I would expect a full bar seat, not just a stool. The service was a bit slow - we sat down and didn't have anyone come over (or even greet us - staff was at the bar and in/out during this time) for a little while. Once they did, everything went smoothly. I enjoyed two of their wines - I wish there was a larger selection, maybe a few local, but found a bit of something. The Sauvignon Blanc was great, very refreshing and paired well with the lighter dishes we had. The Cab, which is usually a favorite of mine, had an odd taste to it. I can't put my finger on it, but I wasn't a fan. Their beer selection, also smaller, was on point- my husband enjoyed a few local favorites from Victory. We shared our meal- literally- splitting the lobster bisque, two apps, and an entree. The bisque was good - I didn't expect it to be tomato based, but enjoyed it. The lobster pieces were a decent size which is always a plus. The Pork Belly Mac and Cheese wasn't like I imagined it would be- there was a twinge of gogonzola in there (the sauce was supposed to be brie based?) -- it was addictingly good though, once you got over biting into something unexpected (like drinking sprite instead of water, you don't hate sprite, you just weren't expecting it). We also had the Short Ribs and Dumplings - now I wasn't thinking, that's two pasta dishes, but it was good. Again, not what I pictured, but good. My husband enjoyed the large pieces of short rib, which melted in your mouth. Our favorite dish of the night was the Ratatouille Carbonara. I wasn't expecting the spaghetti squash to be pureed and it was such a pleasant surprise. It was the perfect compliment to the chunky veggies and the egg. Add in the parm and pesto and you have perfection. I would definitely give Roots another go, maybe for a different meal... read more

There are not a lot of vegan-friendly options in West Chester, so Roots Cafe rose to the top of the list when I was trying to find a restaurant in the area. I was meeting an omnivore and a vegetarian, and we were all able to find something good to eat! As a vegan, you're not going to have a wealth of options, but there will be something. I had pasta with veggies, which was nice, if boring. I just peaked at their latest menu (it changes with the seasons) and noticed a butternut squash curry that looks REALLY good. I'd go back to try that! Service was lovely. They understood what vegan meant and helped me adjust the vegetarian option to suit my needs. They have fun beers, I had a delicious peanut butter stout. The restaurant is on an adorable stretch of road that feels like you've gone back in time. The interior is super cute and rustic, we really enjoyed our time here. This is the very same Roots from just a few blocks away, and they've grown into the space that used to be Gilmore's. The space is a labor of love: personally restored by the owners with (as of this writing) lots of John Hannafin paintings on display, and an expanded back garden. Lots of friendly new servers, the same relaxed Roots vibe, and yummy local food. If you liked roots in their tiny location, you'll love them in their bigger one! read more
