Thank the heavens the food is good because the service suuuuuuuuucks. The chubby guy trying to run the bar and wait tables has some major anger issues, cursing under his breath, huffing and puffing as if customers are there the waste his time. Other server girl won't even acknowledge people when they sit at the bar in front of her. If you're eating here it's probably because there aren't many great options for you in Lancaster or you're intrigued by the menu, but HOLY HELL does the wait staff need a customer service/personality face lift. Food coming out of the kitchen is suuuuper slow and don't be surprised if the people who just sat down 30 minutes after you are served first. Food was very good! Well crafted. I think had I just ordered a main entree I would have left hungry. However, having a sample of the appetizer and a dessert with friends held me over. Some entrees seem to be more filling than others. I got the curried squash, very good but smaller portion. Someone else in our group got a mac n cheese (big portion) and another person got the taco calzone sandwich. That was very good and a good portion. Great vegan bar/restraunt in Lancaster PA! Had a delicious salad & fried tomatoes! It was so good we forgot to stop and take pictures, we just wanted to dig in. Recommend root to all! Appreciate that this is the only vegan restaurant in Lancaster, but service is horrendous. I am talking about sitting for 20 minutes before even being handed a menu. The restaurant is seat yourself - which means you could be ignored for as long as you can put up with it. read more

Really disappointing. The menu looks great - we are vegan eaters and elated to discover this place - but the food was really weak, the only decent offerings being the bar food/deep fried stuff that shouldn't be propping up a vegan place (e.g. the passable fries and the handful of pieces of crunchy seitan). The snap peas were greasy and unseasoned; the chickpea and mushroom curry was a sad portion of liquid on half a plate of rice, with three slices of white mushroom and four chickpeas; the polenta was inedible. The food is basically a disaster, which was exacerbated by the rude/diffident service, which cared little about whether we cared for the food, and got very huffy when we asked about our food after all the tables around us - seated after us - got food before us, and after we notified them that the bathrooms were out of toilet paper. My wife and I just ate dinner here. Full disclosure, I'm not a vegan or vegetarian. However, maybe you are questioning whether a meat-eater could find something good to eat. Yes, you certainly can. Their avocado jalapeno and coleslaw spring rolls were very good. Their version of the Philly cheesesteak was good, but I could see adding a little more filler. The cheese sauce was good, but almost a mix between a cheese sauce and gravy. My wife had the black bean burger. It was very good, but was on the heavy side. If I were to get it in the future I'd likely ask that the bread be light buttered. The French fries were great, I wouldn't change those. I would definitely go back. The prices were very reasonable. Some of the other reviews say the service was slow. Tonight was a Saturday night at 7PM and we were able to sit immediately and had our food in about 20 minutes of ordering. Pretty sure the only people that like this place aren't familiar with decent vegan food. Beware the Rueben is served cold, gross. I thought it was a mistake but was informed "it's supposed to be" cold. The fried tomatoes were good while hot. The wings were disappointing. The croutons on the Caesar were too big to eat but too hard to cut. The blackened mushrooms on the caesar were the same as the oyster mushroom scampi, not blackened what so ever. Don't order anything with oyster mushrooms, they ruin them. Takes about 30 minutes to get a refill of any drink sitting at the bar. I don't blame the bartender, as they have him acting as waiter for the whole place but it was terribly inconvenient. I tried to ignore the bad reviews as this is the only vegan restaurant in Lancaster but if given a second chance, I wouldn't give them my money. read more

Love love love this place! My husband and I are vegan and really enjoying coming to Root. The atmosphere is super comfortable and casual. I love the high ceilings and exposed brick look. They rotate their menu every few months and today we enjoyed a pizza, fried eggplant sandwich and hash tacos which were on special. Their food is always on point. The menu is full of different options including some based off non-vegan foods like their seitan wings or jackfruit cake sandwich. I was very happy to see their brought back some of my favorites so their "favorites" menu so now I don't have to wait for those dishes to be rotated back. I haven't ordered a mixed drink but they always look good. They have a great beer and wine selection. Lastly the prices are awesome, my husband and I can easily get 3 plates and spend about $30 with tip, add some drinks and maybe $40. I highly recommend this place to vegans and non-vegans alike. read more

Worst service I've ever received! I'm vegan so I really wanted to give this place a chance. I excused some stuff the first time I went there, but after the last time I went there, never again. I walk in with my girlfriend and there are 5 employees behind the bar and no customers in the restaurant besides us. Two of the employees are kissing while the others watch. Not a big deal I think and we sit down and start looking at the menu, but after 3 minutes of no one coming up to us, (they were too busy with whatever they were doing), we just got up and left. Very disappointed. We frequented Root when it opened, stopped going when the quality of the food and the service declined. Tried it again several weeks ago, thought it was better. We finally got to this wonderful restaurant. We had heard about it and just couldn't wait to try it. How wonderful to have a vegan pub just 45 minutes from our home which is east of Reading. We went with friends who share our desire to eat a whole food, plant based diet. The wine was awesome, we had the cabernet and so loved that it was vegan! But the food was truly what will bring us back again and again. I must admit it was hard to decide what to try but we finally settled on the four of us splitting the stroganoff, the mac and cheese and the reuben sandwich. My hubby;s favorite was the reuben but my favorite was the stroganoff. Oh my gosh, it was seasoned just right with a little zippity doo dah heat that made it to die for! The mac and cheese with tomatoes on the side was excellent also. How oh how do they make such a creamy cheese sauce?! Everything was excellent. Very close to where family lives, I thought I'd check the place out--especially since I'm always looking for places with vegan food! The atmosphere is a mix of a casual rustic sit-down place and a sports bar, which was an interesting combination. They seemed to have vegan/vegetarian versions of bar food, with sliders and burgers and sandwiches. The staff seemed really nice and wanted to make sure we were comfortable, but the combination of rustic vegan and sports bar seemed off. I ordered a French dip sandwich, which didn't come with any dip--and when I asked about it, I was told that the sandwich didn't come with any (which defeats the purpose of a French dip). The food was decent, but not what I had come to expect from vegan restaurants--since vegan food easily has twice as much flavor when made in restaurants, from my other dining experiences. It's casual, convenient, and simple, and can be nice for a simple night out and slightly off-center from the main city restaurants. read more

I'm vegan and my husband is vegetarian and we thought we'd try out Root since there are so many good Google Reviews. Well... Staff is inattentive and the older male waiter was extremely rude to another customer. Food includes a lot of fake meats, which I'm not a fan of since they aren't healthy to begin with. I had the ravioli and it was rubbery and the sauce tasted like I was drinking perfume. I've had canned ravioli that tasted better. Husband ordered the big mic and said it tasted like it was frozen then reheated because it was dry yet wet. He also didn't like the sauce on the "burger". Food took a while to come out. The desserts were half cold, half warm like it was reheated partially in the microwave. I wonder if the cooks or the people who make the menu even taste the food? Bar atmosphere with ridiculous prices for the quality of food. There's also a couch which isn't very sanitary in a food setting. The cup of water I had tasted like an old dirty sponge. I couldn't stomach it. Not sure how there are so many good reviews, people must not have had good vegan food if they think this place is decent. They were also closed to I guess prepare for a menu change the first time we decided to come, which is odd. I've never heard of a place closing for a week to prepare a new menu read more

this place sucks! 3 hour wait, and it wasnt even that good! people got food before us and thet waited less, and there were 5 PEOPLE in the kitchen. my food tasted like pinecones, and the others were not anything special. would definitely not recommend. the photo is the jacks pie or whatever, terrible brussel sprouts for a vegan restraunt, and extremely boring. Brought my Vegan friend here this past week. It was busy lunch rush when we arrived, so the food probably took a little longer than normal to come out. However, it did not disappoint! We both ordered the Curried Jackfruit Salad and tried out the stuffed mushrooms while we were waiting. My Vegan friend said it best: "This is the kind of food that makes me happy!" Visited for the first time today. My daughter and I were most impressed with the vegan "hot wings" and the "cheese sticks". Both tasted great to me, a mom of a vegan. The lentil meatloaf was okay...it was made with barbecue sauce and was nutty in taste. Not bad, but, not really meat like in my opinion. It came with vegan mac which could have been more seasoned. All in all, it was a wonderful find for the Lancaster area. We were there celebrating my daughters birthday and we will be back soon. read more

After finding out that I had to remove dairy from my diet, my husband and I made plans to try Root because I knew I would be able to eat everything on the menu. I then found out that I also had to remove soy which made me very nervous to have someone else prepare my food. I decided to call Root to ask about soy and I spoke to chef/owner (I think). He was extremely helpful and went over all of the menu items with me to tell me what contained soy. He also said he would mark a menu for when I came in. Our waitress already knew about the pre-marked menu when I explained that I couldn't eat soy. We ordered the pizza quinoa balls, the southwestern Cobb salad and the ELT (eggplant, lettuce and tomato). I asked if I could eat the fries and the kitchen went above and beyond and made some for me that were cooked in coconut oil even though they were clearly very busy. Everything was good, but I have to rave about the ELT. It was delicious and I didn't miss the bacon at all. My husband and I had a great night out without the kids thanks to the fantastic food and service at Root. Thank you again and we will be back. read more
