While passing through Morganton we decided to eat at Root & vine. We had a little trouble finding their new location. Google maps gave accurate directions, but Waze took us to the old location. Our dining experience was worth the extra effort. This new location offers a beautiful open space with nice ambient lighting. They provide a decent wine & beer list. We started with a bottle of Souleil de rouge. We enjoyed the chef's special of the night. It was Salmon on top of spinach quinoa with a beet salad on top. Everything was prepared perfectly and tasted amazing! Don't let beets scare you! Even dessert was unique. We had a bacon brownie that was very delicious. Service was amazing and friendly.

My husband and I enjoyed a late dinner at Root and Vine. We had not visited since they moved. That was a mistake because tonight's meal was fantastic! Brandon was an attentive waiter with a great personality and superb service! We will make sure this place is on our rotation!

First time we have dined at Root and Vine since they moved to its current "roomier" location in Morganton. We absolutely loved everything about the new location - atmosphere, wait staff - a special shoutout to "Madi" who was the absolute perfect server! So bubbly and pleasant and even offered to take our photo! The menu was extensive and had so many interesting choices - it was difficult to choose - the wood fired pizza looked so good - but we will save that for next time....and we all devoured what we ordered - trout, crab cakes, ahi seared tuna, wedge salad and a decadent brownie dessert that we all shared! Check this place out - there is also some colorful fun paintings decorating the place and are for sale! Just go! We will definitely be back soon!

Great little gem in Morgantown, NC! We opted for outside dinning because the ambiance was so sweet and it was a perfect night for dinning outside. Our waitress Ivy was the best! Suggested of few things on the menu and made sure we didn't want or wait for anything. Top notch and highly recommend asking to sit in her area! My artichoke pizza might truly have been the best pizza I have ever had, and I'm from NY and am Italian! Just the right amount of ingredients and perfect texture. Great pizza, a good bottle of vino, how can you go wrong! Oh but you can, but they didn't. Perfect in every way!

Super enjoyable experience! We came on a Thurs night around 6PM and were able to get seated right away. They have an extensive selection of beers which was a big plus for this guy. We started out with an appetizer ($12) the server said was a "special"....a hummus with an olive accent along with a seasoned pizza style pita....it was fantastic! My bride ordered the Veralosso Salmon ($30) and I ordered the Mahi ($29). We both really enjoyed our selections and the sides....especially the curry with the Mahi! Each of us thought the our fish was a little overcooked....so that is an area of opportunity - but still thought our meal was fantastic. Our service from Crosby was outstanding! If I owned a restaurant, I would hire ten of her!

This restaurant is conveniently located in the downtown area, and was easy to find as we traveled. We were told there would be a 25-30 minute wait for lunch. We were seated within that time. Please note that they are Very Adamant about mask wearing. It's the mask version of, "no shirt, no shoes, no service." We decided to go ahead, because of the excellent reviews. We had originally planned to get a grilled Romaine salad (oh, how I wish we had!), but the cheeseburger I ordered came with a side, and the side salad was the only one I could eat, due to sensitivities. We were both enjoying our meals, and right near the end of the meal, our waitress came by to check on our satisfaction. We told her we were very happy. Then, just after she left our table, the bottom fell out of our experience, as I scooped a bite of salad from the plate and saw "a line" across my plate, under the salad. When I pushed it with my fork, I saw that it was a hair. As the waitress seemed to be looking directly at me, I waved at her. Another lady standing with her, who turned out to be a manager, came to our table. I told her about the hair. She seemed to be unconcerned, stating that the hair looked red, and she didn't know who it could have come from. Maybe she didn't believe me, and thought I planted the hair? I don't know. I wish I'd taken a pic of the hair; it looked brown to me. Anyway, she said she would discount my meal. When the bill came, she had discounted my meal by $3. The food was delicious, but, as you can understand, our experience was definitely less than satisfactory.

It's hard to review Root & Vine, it use to be one of my all time favorite places. We would always come for lunch and they would have this smokey pasta with salmon that is one of the best things I've ever eaten. However they are rarely open and at some point they stopped doing lunch also. So now they are only open like 4 days for dinner only. We have been a few times for dinner and it's still good, but not as good as many of the items we've had when they did lunch. It's also a lot more expensive for dinner. Last time we came I recall I had a steak that was ok. Just the way it was cooked, maybe the cut and seasoning, didn't do much for me. It wasn't bad, but for the price I've had much better steaks and given some of the amazing things we've had here I feel they could have done much better. My girlfriend had a fish dish (not the trout) and it was very good. Even the rice had great flavor. Service is hit or miss, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's very slow. Which means they miss out on sales of more drinks. I'm not sure if it's staffing issues or what. Anyways this place was 5+ when we first found it and they opened for lunch. Since then i feel the quality has suffered some. It's still good and we will probably come back, though not as often with no lunch.

This is an absolute hidden gem in downtown Morganton. We tried the arrancini and mussels appetizers and both were really tasty. We also ordered a cobb salad and 2 different pizzas which were equally delicious. The service was impeccable. Our server was attentive, kind and never let us run out of drinks. By far the best dining experience we had on our 4 day trip. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for really good food and service. read more

I'd say pretty good!! I ask a lot of questions and that usually bothers folks and it did them. They pushed back and assured me I would not be dissatisfied. As it turned out they were right. It's right on Main Street in downtown Morganton NC. Other than the smokers and cars it was nice. read more

This was a very enjoyable lunch place in downtown Morganton. They have indoor and patio seating open and the patio is adorable! I ordered the mushroom burger with a side of sweet potato chips. They make the chips in house and they are crispy and delicious! You do have a choice in side options (I don't remember the list off-hand). The burger is cooked to your taste-- for me that's medium well-- and it came out exactly as ordered! read more

I loved this place, cute arty decor & vibe. Friendly service, great food and the prices are really good I mean I think they could ask for more $$ and it would still be reasonable. I started with a blood orange cocktail and then had the chicken pasta everything was so good! This restaurant was recommended by a friend for our trip to Morganton. It was the best meal my dining partners and I have had in a long time. The service was perfect with our server, Courtney, very attentive not only to our table but all her assigned tables. Be aware the portions are large. The Chilean salmon was prepared perfect at medium, moist and hot throughout. The basmati rice was seasoned well, the best I've ever had. My dining companions had the black angus ribeye, all prepared as requested. We couldn't stop talking about how delicious the meal was. Food presentation was superb. The table beside us ordered the watermelon salad and they couldn't stop talking about how good it was. Looking at other plates being served, everything looked tempting. A popular place, the dining rooms filled quickly on a Friday night. As you enter the restaurant you are in the 'casual' dining area with two additional indoor dining rooms off that as well as an outside seating area. Dress is casual. Will definitely stop at this restaurant again when in Morganton. read more

We had the pleasure of dining at the Root and Vine last night for the first time. We had several foodies with us, and a vegan. Heather, our server, was wonderful. She was informative, attentive, and helpful. She went out of her way to help our large party-8 of us-make decisions about beer, wine, and food; she even went to ask the chef some questions for our vegan eater. We started with the grilled romaine salad, split in half, at the suggestion of Heather. I personally went with appetizers for dinner, but others had everything from steak, pork chops, salmon dinner made vegan by substituting grilled tofu, and pizza. Everyone at the table was delighted. Our only regret was that we didn't take pictures of the food. We will definitely be back! read more

I had high hopes for Root and Vine, after having so many positive dining experiences in Morganton. As part of a food tour, we sat at the bar for appetizers/small plates and drinks. The beer list was fairly impressive, although the majority were in bottles or cans; there were maybe six + draught selections. It was busy and our bartender/waitress seemed a bit distracted. Anytime I can drink a can of Back in Black, it puts me in a better mood (because black IPA is awesome). The Black Bean and Roasted Corn Pupusas were just okay - a very dense, dry, filling dish - but pupusas are a "heavy" dish to begin with. The Crab Cake Napoleon, again, was just okay - probably the best parts were the fried green tomatoes and remoulade. Granted, it's hard to make a good crab cake. So for the third time in this review I will say - this place is okay/average. Maybe the entrees are better. Personally, I'd have to say Wisteria is probably the best restaurant in town. We had a nice lunch returning from skiing and R&V is on West Union Street, where it appears many of the best restaurants reside. We have been very positively impressed with Morganton and will be planning our mountain trips to include stops here. The menu is a mix of Italian, Greek and American. Nice bar, which we did not try out, but they sure had a lot of specials and events set up to use it. We settled, reluctantly, for a small lunch of salads and soup. Will look forward to a return to dig into their hardier meals. Wait service was prompt, tea flowed with reminders and the wait staff were very nice. Atmosphere was more cafe/bistro than more formal restaurant, but it all worked for us. There is an upstairs and a rear entrance to access the restaurant from other than Union Street. One of the three or four eateries on W. Union street. Can't go wrong here. read more

This is a gastropub fresh from scratch concept kitchen. Pretty solid menu. Have had the New York Strip, Pork Chops, and few of their pizzas. All very good. Nice cocktail menu with full bar. Highly recommended and probably the best restaurant in town. read more

Great food served well. It was a busy evening so we didn't choose a dinning area, just the first available which was outside. What a cute patio area. We were pleased to be seated there. The menu is covers all the bases including pizza. I had the lamb, wife had the trout and our guest had the chicken breast. All were excellent but I think the lamb stood out. Nice selection of draft beers and an ok wine list. Serve was fine and other guests that we spoke with enjoyed their meals as well. read more

We were pleasant surprised as the food and service exceeded our expectations! Starting with artwork different gin cocktails "on the sectional" as we waited. Both and crisp and restrained in the sweet.. perfect. We had the potstickers starter and they were memorable and unlike any we have had before... the duck and steak entrees were perfectly cooked and a steeped with flavor! The food is delicious! My husband and I shared the crab cakes, (the fried green tomato added something special for sure) and we each had a Mexican street corn. Both were phenomenal. We shared the Rossa pizza for our entree and it was outstanding! My daughter ate the beef tips with fries, she is a super picky eater and she thought both were awesome. Our waitress, Whitley, was super pleasant and attentive without being pushy or obtrusive. Will definitely recommend and be baxk for sure! read more

Our meal was awesome. Extensive drink menu with lots of small breweries on tap. Wood fired grill gave so much flavor to the food. And we finished off the meal with tiramisu (was excellent, light but so flavorful). Our waitress made us feel at home with such a friendly aptitude. While in town for a family event, my family had heard that root & vine was definitely the place to try. We chose to sit outside on the patio, a very cute setting with shade from the trees so we weren't too hot in the North Carolina sun! Their drink menu's were great, it took all of us a while to settle on our drink of choice because there was such a large selection. I was particularly impressed with the food menu once I noticed that I was choosing what I wanted to eat for lunch between 3 completely different options, hinting to me that this place really can satisfy everyone. The service was so kind and enjoyable, and my wedge salad with crab cakes on the side was delicious. Definitely high on my list of recommendations for the small town of Morganton. read more

This is a cool place where art meets food. The mussels where tasty. The pork rinds are served with a pimento cheese. However the Salmon BLT was my favorite. Love the atmosphere and the food. Great taps and wine to go. Don't pass up the dessert option if you can. Bourbon Bacon Brownie or Almond cream cake will do the trick. read more

Literally sat and and waited 20 mins with my party of 5 before anyone came to take out drink order and there was only one other party inside eating. These trendy eateries typically have bad service and this is one of them. Maybe stop hiring gen z employees that just wanna go out back to hit their vape and watch tik toks. Food wasn't bad but over priced for what you get read more

One of the best place for a quiet high quality dinner in Morganton. Nice warm sitting areas (two seating areas) with window seating. Old subway tile on the floor and a separate room for group seating. Cute artsy decode. The appetisers are stellar (the small pesto pizza and the grilled romaine are favourites) I had the salmon in forbidden rice which was fresh and tasty. Also the chicken and mussels are another favourite. read more

A great place to have lunch or dinner in downtown Morgantown. We ordered two appetizers and two main dish. The pizza is done really well and the salmon is executed really well. The whole meal for two came under 40 dollars. For the taste, the portions, and good service, I highly recommend this place. read more

One of the best places to eat in uptown Morganton, The place looks amazing and the staff is some of the nicest you'll ever meet, very welcoming and easy to talk to. They always keep you coming with refills and check-ups. The food is a bit on the classy side, so unless you plan on getting a pizza or something like that (which they are bomb) I wouldn't recommend this place for younger children, but if you're a family, and you got money, prepare yourself for a great evening when you come to root and vine. read more

Will definitely be coming back here. We shared the grilled romaine salad and the capricciosa pizza. Both tasted AMAZING and were perfectly grilled with just enough char and flavor. Not to mention the prices are great for the amount of food we received. Staff and service were great as well. read more

We were in town for one night, looking for an interesting place to have dinner. This place fit the bill perfectly! Excellent food, and an amazing beer list! We were very glad we had a designated driver so we could take advantage of it. The multiple menus can be a little confusing, so be sure to check them all out. Not a very long list of entrees, but the pizza choices make up for that. My husband had the grilled beef tenderloin, which was generous and outstandingly delicious. My son and I had pizzas. The Margherita was excellent--you can clearly taste the quality of the mozzarella. The Bisteca seemed like it needed a little something more; with added red pepper it was quite tasty. The kale salad was also wonderful--they should bottle that mustard vinaigrette! We topped off the meal with the bourbon bacon brownie. You couldn't count the exclamations: that brownie was to die for!!! I think I'm glad we do t live nearby. Overall, a great meal in a cute place with great service! Definitely worth a visit. read more

I wasn't impressed. Root & Vine was our stop for lunch on our way to Asheville. We should have kept going..... The menu seems amazing and reads like a 5 Star restaurant. What you get when the server delivers the food is that of a place that is trying to cut corners and charge you full price. Example: Kale Salad, add salmon -- Butternut Squash, Dried Cranberries, Slivered almonds, "lusty" mustard vinaigrette, shaved 18 month parmigiano reggiano. This was described as "a joke" by Sweetie. Mostly kale with tiny bits of the above ingredients, along with 2 of the smallest pieces of salmon. It wasn't a lunch portion at all and frankly seemed like they were trying to get one over on their customers. It was basically 3 dollars worth ingredients with no love at all, just crap on a plate. Not sure what poet they contracted to write the menu but I suggest they review what is being served vs. what is described. My burger was OK. Just ok. I ordered it Med Rare and it came out medium and their proprietary blend of meat wasn't able to be distinguished because of it not being cooked correctly. Happy to leave this place and get on our way. We felt slighted. read more

Our group of 7 experienced a hostile environment at this restaurant. It appeared to us they are short staffed and unable to deal with customers in a hospitable manner. Our host for the night had frequented this restaurant with corporate customers in the past and was embarrassed for our group. She told the staff she would never come back..." they replied...we don't care". In this economy don't waste your time on this place. The restaurant was almost empty so it seems this rude reputation is growing. read more

History

Established in 2011.

The idea of root & vine began with one simple word: value. We wanted to provide our guest with the highest quality products, coupled with professional service in a comfortable dining atmosphere. We found this great location in Historic Downtown Morganton sitting on the corner of King Street and W. Union. We fell in love with this 1901 historic building (which was once the home of a candy counter, a florist and several other restaurants), the town and the people.

Meet the Business Owner: Brian M.

Brian Miller is the Chef du Cuisine & Managing Partner along with Aimee Perez, Front of the House Manager. Strong in classic French techniques paired with Southern influences show through today in Chef Miller's cooking. He received his formal culinary education from the award winning culinary program at A-B Tech in Asheville, North Carolina. His careful, artful pairing of international influences with traditional southern elements produces a very unique dining experience. He feels very strongly about the use of local and sustainable products, and root & vine's goal is to strengthen relationships with local Morganton farmers.

For market price (which was $48 tonight for a 6 ounce) it was dry. It didn't have any unique taste that made it memorable. The manager did refund 75% of the cost of the meal, and I do appreciate it. I believe the menu should mention that the meat is chargrilled. My husband ordered beef skewers to go with the house special tonight of noodles with Asian sauce. He couldn't eat this steak either. It was so overcooked and again, no flavor. Just charcoal. Again, the cost of the skewers were removed off of the bill. So thank you for that. I'm giving this place 3-stars because we really wanted to love it. The ambiance was nice. We didn't have a reservation but were seated promptly. All of the employees were very welcoming. But the food left much to be desired. We didn't order any specialty drinks or wine tonight so I have no review for those, but there were many different types of offerings.

Corporate strategy seems to confirm it--when a location stays slammed, they simply open another one rather than enlarging the existing building. Ayden was the complete opposite. She spoke softly, carried herself with genuine politeness, and delivered service that felt thoughtful and attentive. She wasn't trying to be flashy or flirtatious; she simply focused on doing her job well. You could tell she possesses strong natural service instincts. With the right training and time to develop, she could easily reach the level of five-star elite hospitality--the kind of server guests remember and specifically request on future visits. She handled my order flawlessly, and that is no small feat. I am an extremely particular eater. If there is a single pickle spear on the plate, the entire dish goes back. Onions, mushrooms, or peppers of any kind are an immediate deal-breaker. She nailed every detail on the first try. Yesterday, when I stopped in, my order was also perfect, though the restaurant was nearly empty and the staff was relaxed. Today the place had at least four or five other tables occupied, yet Ayden remained calm, focused, and consistently excellent. I had very little wait time, and the atmosphere was great until someone started playing the jukebox. In short, this young lady has real potential. If she chooses to invest the effort and receives proper mentorship, she could become one of those rare servers who elevate the entire dining experience. I left impressed--not just with the food, but with the quiet professionalism she brought to a restaurant that doesn't always prioritize subtlety. Waffle House has a solid concept and consistent product; on this visit, the service matched the quality of the meal. Pretty outstanding. We were passing through and looking for a nice place to eat. Someplace unique and special. Root & Vine is. The atmosphere is artsy, but refined; casual, but not. I really liked it. My wife and I come through the region occasionally, we'll have to remember to stop in here. It gets 4 out of 5. The Root & Vine gets one big demerit though: Morganton is *right* next to North Carolina's wine country. There are tons of great wines in NC... and not one on the menu. Heck, I saw only one NC beer on the list. So, yes, I understand you are a new restaurant. Now go driving and become an NC wine expert. You'll have yet another reason for people to call this place special. Recommend: Big thumbs up with a "needs to go another step local" caveat. read more

I was there this past week on thursday night and had a interesting experience with the wait staff. Our server, a nice young lady, did not have a clue about wine or wine service. In a restaurant with an extensive wine list you would think the staff would be trained. She did not have any information about the wine and when she did bring the wine to the table she said she had only opened two bottles before because, and I quote, " We do not sell that much wine here." I would agree with Chet L. The restaurant does break the mold for Morganton. Sooo I suppose our first visit should not have been on New Years Eve. The food was above par for Morganton but the service was not. It had the feel of amateur hour at Dennys. Young servers who scurry about that were overwhelmed. Maybe I will visit them again when it is not so busy. read more
