Today I enjoyed breakfast at the Waffle House in Morganton, North Carolina--affectionately known in some circles as the "Awful Waffle." I was served by a young woman named Ayden, and she was anything but the typical Waffle House experience. Most Waffle House servers (and the entire front-of-house team, for that matter) tend to be loud, boisterous, and, quite frankly, a little overwhelming. I've always assumed this is by design; the company wants you in and out as quickly as possible. Corporate strategy seems to confirm it--when a location stays slammed, they simply open another one rather than enlarging the existing building. It's a clever way to keep tables turning, and it works. I'm not criticizing the staff in any derogatory way; I'm simply noting that the high-energy, in-your-face style is part of the brand's DNA. Ayden was the complete opposite. She spoke softly, carried herself with genuine politeness, and delivered service that felt thoughtful and attentive. She wasn't trying to be flashy or flirtatious; she simply focused on doing her job well. You could tell she possesses strong natural service instincts. With the right training and time to develop, she could easily reach the level of five-star elite hospitality--the kind of server guests remember and specifically request on future visits. She handled my order flawlessly, and that is no small feat. I am an extremely particular eater. If there is a single pickle spear on the plate, the entire dish goes back. Onions, mushrooms, or peppers of any kind are an immediate deal-breaker. She nailed every detail on the first try. Yesterday, when I stopped in, my order was also perfect, though the restaurant was nearly empty and the staff was relaxed. Today the place had at least four or five other tables occupied, yet Ayden remained calm, focused, and consistently excellent. I had very little wait time, and the atmosphere was great until someone started playing the jukebox. In short, this young lady has real potential. If she chooses to invest the effort and receives proper mentorship, she could become one of those rare servers who elevate the entire dining experience. I left impressed--not just with the food, but with the quiet professionalism she brought to a restaurant that doesn't always prioritize subtlety. Waffle House has a solid concept and consistent product; on this visit, the service matched the quality of the meal. We were craving Waffle House and headed to this one. There were 3 employees outside on a smoke break at the same time. Inside we noticed two empty tables that needed to be bussed, so we sat down to wait. About 8 minutes later we left because not only had the tables not been cleared but not a single employee out of the 5 inside the building had even acknowledged that we were sitting there. Not even to say, "hey, we'll be right with you." Pretty lousy customer service. read more

Today, December, 22nd, 2022, we visited this location. we walk in and we're instantly transformed into invisible people. The restaurant had five table full and the rest were empty. One of the tables has just gotten up to pay, while the other tables remained dirty. one of the staff members glanced in our direction, but our ghostly appearance must have frightened the young lady, because she quickly looked away. We waited several minutes and we're ignored the entire time. Upon the next rubbling of my belly, we walked out. As a business owner myself, I look to management to properly train staff in the importance of customer service. So good! The service was very kind and quick. Everyone had a smile on their face and kept the water coming. Food was exactly as I requested - the waffle came late, but honestly some of the best eggs I've had in a hot minute. Really enjoyed the entire experience! I have visited this restaurant several times. The food is always good. The thing that I like most is the wait staff. They seem to truly care about my experience.Arianna was my waitress and did a wonderful job. The young lady that waited on the young men a few tables from me seemed excellent. The waitress waiting on the older couple was wonderful. They all built the appropriate rapport for their customers. Great customer service at this location. The customer service at this location was very unsatisfactory.. When my siblings and myself walked in we waited for about 5 minutes no one ever greeted us. We are African Americans I should say.. So then a couple walked in (Caucasian) and they were greeted as soon as they walked in with a hello welcome back good to see ya.. so we still continue to stand there while they where seated. So we just walked out .. I myself have been in management for over 20 years and to get the poor customer service because of someone skin color just baffles me when we are living in 2021... would not recommend this place to anyone at all.. racism has to come to and end .. read more

as soon as we walked in ALL of the tables were nasty, even the ones people weren't already at, our waiter had a very bad attitude and waited about 10 min after we already sat down at the nasty bar to actually clean it for us where he still done a half good job, after that he took our order and STILL didn't ask for our drinks. he brought us our food and my fiancé didn't get what he wanted at all, he still had given us no silverware, when he finally did he had his hands all over them, when just before he had stuck his hand down in cleaning solution to get the rag to clean the table, we started eating already annoyed and didn't have our drinks so i asked if we could get our drinks, my fiancé wanted orange juice and i wanted tea. he confidently SLAMMED chocolate milk and water on to our table. Not to even mention that i am not one to judge someone's hardships but all of the workers were very obviously abusing drugs as the cook literally had white dust under her nose and it wasn't flour. it was an all over terrible experience and we made sure to tell the large group of people that came in as we were leaving to not even go in and waste there time. thanks. read more

Only thing open Christmas Day . Looking for something reasonable to eat . Worst mistake ever. Ordered 2 go orders one for me and one for my daughter. She order a grilled cheese and two steak melts the waitress tried to charge her over $25 for 3 sandwich no sides and no add one . My daughter had to tell her twice it wasn't wright she was adding it on a calculator no the register . Then my order was for a burger and two chicken melts charged me $23 no sides or add on .
