Our server Brittina was phenomenal. It was super hot but we sat outside because we'd been at South Mountains State Park with our dogs. She was friendly, attentive and thoughtful. The food was great. I am vegetarian and had romaine salad, gazpacho soup and pupusas. She brought extra water for dogs. My partner had airline chicken and loved the potatoes and carrots and chicken. We went for dinner on a Wednesday evening and the place was surprisingly full. The bartender was impeccable. I don't think he ever stopped moving and checking on everyone. My only complaint was that the kitchen took a while to get our food out, but the appetizers and salads came out quickly and if I returned super hungry I would order a soup or salad before dinner. My salmon was top notch. The skin was crispy and the meat was perfectly cooked. My god mother loved her tomato bisque and fried oysters. The grits an polenta were what everyone at the bar was talking about. Many of the cocktails looked delicious and I can wait to come back sometime when I can try a few. While walking in several diners were walking out saying the food was amazing so that was a great sign. Our server Ryker was amazing. We ended up choosing the boot Burger as well as the grilled romaine Caesar salad with chicken chicken, I have to tell you that the Caesar dressing was incredible. While passing through Morganton we decided to eat at Root & vine. We had a little trouble finding their new location. Google maps gave accurate directions, but Waze took us to the old location. Our dining experience was worth the extra effort. This new location offers a beautiful open space with nice ambient lighting. They provide a decent wine & beer list. We started with a bottle of Souleil de rouge. We enjoyed the chef's special of the night. It was Salmon on top of spinach quinoa with a beet salad on top. Everything was prepared perfectly and tasted amazing! Don't let beets scare you! Even dessert was unique. We had a bacon brownie that was very delicious. Service was amazing and friendly. read more

First time we have dined at Root and Vine since they moved to its current "roomier" location in Morganton. We absolutely loved everything about the new location - atmosphere, wait staff - a special shoutout to "Madi" who was the absolute perfect server! So bubbly and pleasant and even offered to take our photo! The menu was extensive and had so many interesting choices - it was difficult to choose - the wood fired pizza looked so good - but we will save that for next time....and we all devoured what we ordered - trout, crab cakes, ahi seared tuna, wedge salad and a decadent brownie dessert that we all shared! Check this place out - there is also some colorful fun paintings decorating the place and are for sale! Just go! We will definitely be back soon! read more

Suggested of few things on the menu and made sure we didn't want or wait for anything. Top notch and highly recommend asking to sit in her area! This place has it all really dialed in. As soon as you walk through the door you know it's going to be amazing. Great food, super atmosphere, and the service was absolutely top notch. Super enjoyable experience! We came on a Thurs night around 6PM and were able to get seated right away. They have an extensive selection of beers which was a big plus for this guy. We started out with an appetizer ($12) the server said was a "special"....a hummus with an olive accent along with a seasoned pizza style pita....it was fantastic! My bride ordered the Veralosso Salmon ($30) and I ordered the Mahi ($29). We both really enjoyed our selections and the sides....especially the curry with the Mahi! Each of us thought the our fish was a little overcooked....so that is an area of opportunity - but still thought our meal was fantastic. Our service from Crosby was outstanding! 3.5 stars Really nice people. Great patio. The food is a little hit and miss. The pizzas are great. Some other items were less than stellar. The soup the day was ok. Not great, not bad. The oysters and grits small plate was also ok, but I wouldn't get it again. We actually had to send back a plate of seared ahi, which we felt really bad about, since it's something we basically never do. Sadly, it just smelled very strongly fishy (in a bad way) and tasted way past its best-by date. Honestly, we could barely get one bite down. (I suspect this probably reflects more on the supplier than the restaurant.) In any case, the manager definitely made things right -- went above and beyond, to tell the truth -- which we greatly appreciated. We ended up switching it out for a pizza and that was actually really tasty. The tiramisu dessert was also excellent! Again, the staff were all incredibly nice, especially the gal running the front of house. So, if we are ever in town, we'll likely stop here again for pizzas and drinks on the nice patio. Maybe it was an off day, maybe not, but we'd probably just pass on the other options. YMMV read more

This restaurant is conveniently located in the downtown area, and was easy to find as we traveled. We were told there would be a 25-30 minute wait for lunch. We were seated within that time. Please note that they are Very Adamant about mask wearing. It's the mask version of, "no shirt, no shoes, no service." We decided to go ahead, because of the excellent reviews. We had originally planned to get a grilled Romaine salad (oh, how I wish we had!), but the cheeseburger I ordered came with a side, and the side salad was the only one I could eat, due to sensitivities. We were both enjoying our meals, and right near the end of the meal, our waitress came by to check on our satisfaction. We told her we were very happy. Then, just after she left our table, the bottom fell out of our experience, as I scooped a bite of salad from the plate and saw "a line" across my plate, under the salad. When I pushed it with my fork, I saw that it was a hair. As the waitress seemed to be looking directly at me, I waved at her. Another lady standing with her, who turned out to be a manager, came to our table. I told her about the hair. She seemed to be unconcerned, stating that the hair looked red, and she didn't know who it could have come from. Maybe she didn't believe me, and thought I planted the hair? I don't know. I wish I'd taken a pic of the hair; it looked brown to me. Anyway, she said she would discount my meal. When the bill came, she had discounted my meal by $3. The food was delicious, but, as you can understand, our experience was definitely less than satisfactory. read more

It's hard to review Root & Vine, it use to be one of my all time favorite places. We would always come for lunch and they would have this smokey pasta with salmon that is one of the best things I've ever eaten. However they are rarely open and at some point they stopped doing lunch also. So now they are only open like 4 days for dinner only. We have been a few times for dinner and it's still good, but not as good as many of the items we've had when they did lunch. It's also a lot more expensive for dinner. Last time we came I recall I had a steak that was ok. Just the way it was cooked, maybe the cut and seasoning, didn't do much for me. It wasn't bad, but for the price I've had much better steaks and given some of the amazing things we've had here I feel they could have done much better. My girlfriend had a fish dish (not the trout) and it was very good. Even the rice had great flavor. Service is hit or miss, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's very slow. Which means they miss out on sales of more drinks. I'm not sure if it's staffing issues or what. Anyways this place was 5+ when we first found it and they opened for lunch. Since then i feel the quality has suffered some. It's still good and we will probably come back, though not as often with no lunch. read more

We decided to try this restaurant as we were in Morganton for a Christmas concert. The food was excellent and everyone was pleased with their dish. I had salmon with grilled Brussels sprouts and polenta . Needless to say, I cleaned my plate. We all had appetizers and dessert. So good! When searching for a lunch spot this place clearly ended up at the top of the list. The line out front as we approached told us we made a good decision. We wanted to try a little of everything and I think we accomplished a lot. Hot Fried Chicken - delicious! It's not a classic flavor because it has a serious Spanish paprika flavor. It made me think of a paella or real Spanish chorizo, so freakin' good. The chicken was huge and still juicy inside. The fries were super crispy which I loved but my husband wasn't as excited. Short Rib Pasta - I'm not exactly sure what it was called but it was really good. The pasta was fresh and the sauce was really good but heavy from the short ribs. The portion seemed small but after all the flavor it was perfect. Pizza - we went with a classic margarita pizza. The crust was perfect with great color and crispness. Nice touches of basil with the mozzarella and of course that really good olive oil makes a good pizza a great pizza. Props to the team for always wearing masks and being thoughtful during the pandemic. I can't wait to get back. read more

Girls Night Out with the Girls! We were at Lake James for a weekend! We decided one night to go out to Morganton to have dinner and it was absolutely splendid. Our waiter, Ryder, was great. He greeted us very nicely and served us very quickly. He got all of our orders perfectly without one incident. For dessert, he even ran --literally ran-- to get us the last slice of key lime pie (unfortunately he was too late). But Ryder was absolutely fabulous. The food was also fantastic. I got the wedge salad and it was one of the best salads I have had. The blue cheese dressing adds the perfect savory to the crisp lettuce along with the tender bacon. The blueberry cheesecake was also delicious. The lemon curd add the perfect sour to the sweet. The outdoor ambiance was peaceful and clean. It has a rustic feel along with a pretty garden vibe. When I reviewed the menu and previous reviews I was really excited to give this place a shot. It's also really cozyvqnd inviting with a rustic modern vibe. Unfortunately, it was average at best and overpriced. I ordered the chicken with the risotto and broccolini. It was $29. Nope. The chicken was dry and underseasoned. The risotto had a slight smokey taste, but otherwise unremarkable and there were 4 slim stalks of charred broccolini and 4 random cooked until they dried button mushrooms. Even though I was at the bar I couldn't get anyone's attention because there was a whiney man at the end of the bar. The guy on the other side of me also sent his pizza back because all of the toppings fell off. I was exhausted and hungry since I was traveling back from a road trip. I would have sent mine back as well, but it took me nearly a half hour to get my meal. I would not return. read more

Had a very delicious date night at this indoor/outdoor restaurant in Morganton. Definitely has great ambiance between the running waterfall and the hanging lights outside. We started the meal with cocktails. I got a blackberry bulleit martini (Bulleit Rye whiskey, Barritts ginger beer, honey, muddled blackberries, mint, and lime juice). One of the best cocktails Ive ever had, and I came from the triangle to Morganton, so I know a few cocktail bars (Virgil and STIR being my two favorites there) For supper, they were sadly out of the wild striped bass meal I wanted, but offered flounder as a replacement. It was delicious and quite filling with Charleston gold rice, asparagus, and apple-jalapeño slaw. Very happy with our decision to come here and looking forward to a visit again. One thing I'll say is that the walk from inside to outside the restaurant is quite harrowing. Lots of steps to trip over between what seemed to originally be 3 different business with different floor levels that have combined into one restaurant space. This place should have closed down instead of relocating. I made a graduation reservation 8 weeks in advance. Called back to reconfirm 6 weeks later as they were evicted from their last location... The owner insisted I must have called another restaurant (I know who I called) because they don't take reservations and wouldn't accommodate their hostess's mistake by honoring the one she took. By the way, I called this restaurant three times over the last three weeks to reconfirm the reservation, and they didn't bother to return my any of my calls during their move. This wasted my time and ruined any chances of me finding another venue on such short notice. I hope business dries up for this place... piss poor management and customer service read more

So, Root & Vine is so good we've eaten here four times, and we've only been to/in Morganton a total of 36 hours. We've come to Morganton twice just to get away and get a little elevation during the pandemic. This place is one of the reasons we came back a second time. The pizzas are to die for. I know, I know, you can get pizza anywhere, but the wood burning oven and the toppings they choose are unique and amazing. We've gotten the one with hot cappy, artichokes and mushrooms twice. The clam pizza is amazing too. So different. Like a bight of the ocean. We've also had the Margherita, and the steak and arugula micro green pizza which was also yummy, but the hot cappy one is the star. We've gone to brunch twice too (the second time having our folks meet us on their way back from Blowing Rock.) Yes, this place is that good. Both trips to Morganton we've eaten dinner here and then woke up and went back for more. Shrimp and grits are one of those southern staples that I order out rarely since I never believe that it can compete with mine, my moms, or my late aunt's (hers were the best in history). Root & Vine's shrimp and grits are some of the best I've had at a restaurant. I could drink that country ham gravy. My wife had the chicken and waffles the first time we went to brunch. They were good, but put up next to my shrimp and grits there was no contest. Second brunch, I had the burger. It was amazing. So many times I've ordered a brunch burger and either the egg or the burger gets over cooked. Not here. Medium burger and over medium egg was just amazing. Wife had the poutine with that gravy I just mentioned. Holy cholesterol batman, but was it good. Mom got the crab open face and didn't love it, but that may have been because she tried ours. Dad had the Margherita pizza and it was as good and mom ate half of it, so that may have had something to do with it. I wish this place was in my home town. I'd eat there every day. The service is top notch as is their attention to safety during the pandemic. They were also very kind to our dog that came with us all four times. This place should be famous!!! read more

This one is hard for me. Our first visit, for lunch...the food was great ya'll. We fully enjoyed our meals. My sandwich had just the right portion of pulled pork and ham...slightly lacking on the delicious sauce, but still amazing. The crab cakes are pricey, and ours were slightly burnt, but...they were still amazing. Light, fluffy, filled with crab rather than breading...super yum. And the sauce theyre decorated with is so yummy. Gotts say, the house dressing that came on my salad was a disappointment; very little flavor. Overall, we were really happy and looking forward to returning simply to try their brick oven pizza. And so we did...and the pizzas...just fall so short. Both of our pizzas were completely undercooked. I literally had to throw them in the oven to try to save them. Even then the crusts were chewy and the toppings were sadly raw. These are also lacking in flavor...big time. I legit get better pizza, that's not so pricey, from frikkin Papa John's. I had been waiting to try their fried green tomatoes, because they only offer them on their dinner menu. Not worth it. The tomatoes were crunchy, like almost potato chip status, and just so damn bland. There's nothing special, unique, or flavorful about them. Even the breading is boring. Return visit? Ehhh...maybe if I'm craving a sandwich. Otherwise, this place is a hard pass. Prices are high and most of the quality ends up being mediocre or less. Big disappointment. read more

This is a very enjoyable restaurant to dine, imbibe, and linger in conversation. Our lunch today on the patio was a very pleasant experience. Deciding on what to order was really difficult as everything looked great. Salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, wood-fired pizzas, and daily specials make it tough to decide. Everything is excellent so you can't go wrong. Our entire party thoroughly enjoyed their food. Service was very friendly and attentive. The night after I tried Wisteria, I decided to check out root & vine. Wow, I must say that I had an excellent experience here! The service was outstanding on the night of my visit. It was a Wednesday night and not overly busy but there were other patrons. The staff was very warm & welcoming. The place is cute & cozy. I loved the outdoor patio...it is a great space! Although it is now winter & the patio is closed, it would be an awesome place for outdoor dining in better weather! They had an excellent selection of delicious sounding cocktails and a nice offering of beer & wines as well. I had a tough time deciding what to order because I saw 3 things on the menu that sounded really good to me. I finally ended up telling my server the 3 things that appealed to me and asked which 1 of the 3 she would recommend for me to try on my first visit. She said that her favorite was the chicken served over polenta with the green beans. Which was the first thing that I thought about ordering. This was an excellent choice! The chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It was juicy & tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The polenta was delish... and green beans were perfectly cooked but not overcooked. Yum, yum, yum!! Compared to my normal haunts in Charlotte and Hilton Head, prices here were very reasonable! I will definitely go back on future trips to Morganton. read more

I've had this one on my "list" for a while. Morganton is one of my favorite towns, and this restaurant is my favorite there. With the beautiful weather this weekend, the kids and I took the 45 minute ride to Morganton to enjoy dining al fresco and swing by Valdese afterwards. We were seated on the patio and was it ever beautiful! So peaceful, and lots to watch and see while we waited on our food. The bonus? They allow dogs on the patio! Not that I have a dog, but I live vicariously through those who do. We ordered the crispy pork rinds for an appetizer. It came with house made pimiento cheese and Valentina hot sauce. So good, the pork rinds were fresh, not too salty. The cheese was tart with a little bite and the hot sauce was perfect with it. I got the gnocchi which was served with a bolognese sauce with house made sausage, topped with mozzarella and parmigiano reggaino. It was pillowy soft, and simply delicious. Honestly, I MIGHT have preferred a lighter sauce but it was still amazing. The salad was fresh and yummy, and had fresh mushrooms! I'm in love! It was served with a breadstick as well, but that was just too extra. My kids both had sandwiches (but LOVED my gnocchi). The cuban and the hot fried chicken sammies. I didn't try either, except the "wickles" from my daughter's sandwich. OMG, where have these been all of my life? She actually took them off, so my son and I devoured them. Would have been closer to 5 but a couple things threw me off. Very dark atmosphere. Not just old creepy building which smells of mold and mildew but dark. They chose minimal lighting. We were first in at lunch so you would expect attentive service. Not really. Our sever seemed bored and was minimally adequate. No personality or attempt at connection. The bathroom was atrocious. Remember what I said? First in at lunch. Shameful. Was it even cleaned from night before? We also ate quickly so that wasn't from one day. (See pic).
