I had a broiled seafood platter last night. The baked potato was very good. Our friend had crab cakes and almost choked on some bits of crab shell in the actual crab cake. She was kind and probably didn't mention it to the staff. The seafood was disappointing; scallops, shrimp and a white fish had perhaps been broiled at some point but looked like they were microwaved for us. My husband and I split a grilled platter that included shrimp, scallops, and flounder. It was delicious and it was plenty of food for two. The service was good. It was busy but the restaurant was very efficient, getting the tables cleaned quickly and getting people seated quickly. read more

Good food at a good price. Don't come expecting the best seafood you've ever eaten, but it will be good at a reasonable price and served with care. The Buffett is very good for those who are into quantity with solid quality. Once again, not a high brow dining establishment, but good quality food at a reasonable price. Oh lawd. I was just passing through, looking for somewhere to eat. This was a bad choice. You are taking a huge chance on getting food poisoning here, I kid you not. I hate to give such a bad review, but this place needs to be shut down. All the front employees I met were gracious and nice but I don't know what's going on with the kitchen staff. What I do know is that I didn't eat supper because all the food delivered to our table was cold. I mean cold. And greasy. I did take a few bites (big mistake) and sent it back. I was offered for my food to be replaced at no charge for any meal but said no thank you and left. Now I'm feeling quite sick on my stomach and you don't want more details. It ain't pretty. I'm sorry but this really isn't safe at all. Hope I survive the night without an ER visit. And that's no joke. read more

This place is disgusting! The food was terribly overpriced for the filth they give you. I ordered oysters and white fish .. the absolute worst food ever! It took forever, and the oysters were cold, greasy and soggy! There were some with oyster shells in them! Our server was super rude and hateful.. we tried to still be nice and told her "thanks so much" when she gave us our food, but she literally just walked away every time! we always clean our table nicely and tip very, very well... this time we paid the bill for the putrid food, but didn't tip the server at all!! hopefully she will learn to be nicer to her other customers! she was horrible and so was the food We will not be back here and I highly suggest you go eat somewhere decent ! read more

You can't go wrong if you eat at Hook & Anchor. The food was wonderful and our waitress Lindsey was delightful. Try to come in the fall the apple-fritter with ice cream and caramel is amazing!! I would drive the 10 hrs again to eat here. read more

This experience was a disappointing. The restaurant was not particularly clean. Wait person seemed tired and a too old to do the job efficiently. But the greatest disappointment was the food, especially the flounder. If the two filets, one was under cooked. To the point of being inedible. We left immediately. Very sad read more

Great service! We really like eating here because it's a family friendly restaurant with lots of variety! They offer several size and combo options! The food is fresh and flavorful! We went today Sunday the 15th my father And mother in law wanted to take my wife out to eat for her birthday, we were able to relax and catch up with no rush. First time coming to H&A. Me and my guest had a coupon for checked strips since we don't eat seafood. Upon arrival we were seated very quickly. As we walked to our booth, it's easy to feel like you just stepped back into the 1980s. The entire restaurant has a causal feel and doesn't look as though it's been updated since the day it opened in 1984 (according to the menu). The restaurant is very clean....but old outdated decor. It seems to be a popular place with the locals as it was busy but not overly as there were plenty of empty tables. The waitress was pretty slow to come get our drink orders but about 10 minutes later she came and brought us a basket of hush puppies. I'm assuming these are a house snack like chips at a Mexican restaurant. They were pretty good and tasty. We got our drinks and gave our order. We each got 4 chicken strips which I was pleased it came with slaw and fries (a side of your choice). The food came out rather quick. Got another refill of soda. Waitress was nice and got our order right. But after our food came out and hit our second refills she no longer checked in on us. We eventually saw her when a table came in next to us. I had to track her down to get a to-go box. I was going to get another refill, but after waiting for a bit 15 minutes, I said screw it and we paid and left. It was a pretty good place for the most part. The food was warm and fresh. The food portion was pretty much to be expected with what we paid. I wouldn't have paid that much without the coupon though. Honestly, the bad reviews almost made us miss a great restaurant. No this is not the Red Lobster. But if you want s great local fish house, this is your kinda place. Amazing salad bar, tasty steaks, and seafood. Very light, not greasy on the fried entrees. Only complaint, a lot of very young waitresses standing around, even with my wife trying to get their attention for some water. We're in the area just a couple days. Not familiar to anything here but, on Good Friday, wanted seafood a bit different that McDonald's sandwiches. This place is FANTASTIC!!!! It's fried seafood and great flavor. Not greasy, good portions, and a nice variety to breading... Tried the salt/pepper, regular, and spicy. All unique and yummy. It was catered to the Curbside pickup... the young kids were brilliant! Ordered on line and got crispy fish, shrimp, onion rings, hush pups, etc. Not soggy or greasy And such a friendly crew!!!! We've a place on the ocean and this place is better than several we've tried on the other side of NC. Fair price, too! read more

Stopped in while traveling because this place received such great reviews. We expected so much more! I ordered white Alaskan with oysters and fries. My fiance ordered blackened salmon and baby shrimp with home fries. The food was so oily that I had trouble eating. My fries were brought out cool to the touch, but at least they were not soaked in grease. My fiance finished his mediocre salmon, but could only handle about two shrimp. The food was absolutely SOAKED in grease. We left with our plates still full and stomachs empty. Our waitress noticed all the food left behind, but didn't sat anything. Having been all over the place in my life, it's always good to come home. Part of that feeling you get inside is knowing that when you come home, you will go to the places you grew up playing in and around and also food establishments. I went to Hook & Anchor when ai first arrive. When I opened the box...........there wasn't nearly half the regular portion served as in the past. I thought I had made a mistake and ordered a small portion but I was right. I ordered large and the portions were small. Today, my mom was hungry and I decided to order a large plate of perch and a large combination of shrimp and flounder. When I got home and opened the trays.............the hushpuppies looked like small rocks you would find in a stream. There were small pieces of flounder. The fries were cold and the coleslaw was the worst coleslaw that I have tasted to date. It was like eating raw cabbage. I am not sure what happened with my favorite place but one thing is for certain.......if someone doesn't start to take a look at the intricacies and operation in depth........we may not have a seafood place here. I certainly cannot go back after paying $29.00 and getting pebbles. read more

My husband came into Hook & Anchor on Thursday, Valentine's Day, 2/14/2019 at about 7 pm. He asked for some blackberry cobbler to go, but he was told they were reserving that for those who ordered the V'Day special meal. Okay, fair enough. My husband proceeded to order 2 Hot Fudge Cakes. When he got home ( almost 30 minutes away), and we opened the take-out containers, we found out we were expected to put the desserts together ourselves!! A square of chocolate cake, a small amount of ice cream in a tiny container, chocolate 'fudge' in a tiny container, a dab of whipped cream, and 4 maraschino cherries. Almost $9 for desserts that we had to assemble ourselves. It's not the first time our orders have been wrong, but this will be the last, for we'll not return. read more

The food is just OK. It is hit or miss on whether you're getting a good plate of seafood or a greasy mess. The service is also the same. I will not call anyone out, but last night the waitress took my order, then brought it and she was done. Now all the other tables got refills and asked if everything was good. Visiting the area, we went for Easter diner. The seafood buffet looked disgusting so: Had Oyster stew appetizer: Oysters were excellent, broth was tasteless. The fritters they give everyone were outstanding. Fried chicken livers main course: Way over cooked, home fries, yuk. They do not have a liquor license or beer and wine. The water was good, and the waitress friendly Had to wait in line at the register to pay. The positives don't out weigh the negatives. Can I give no stars? We had dinner there yesterday. The food was horrible. How do you mess up shrimp? I don't know, but they managed quite well. My mother-in-law ordered chicken livers. They were as hard as moon rocks. The breading on my flounder was not done. The fish was not done. The slaw was nasty. The portion sizes were really small for the money. It was bad, real bad. Sounds like this is a place where you take your chances. We went this past weekend for the first time. I had the mesquite chicken; my Mom had the beef tips. The baked potato was good and hot, but the meat was warm at best. Good salad bar, with spring mix as well as iceburg lettuce.
