Buddha Bowl, Mango Passionfruit Slush w/ Coconut Jelly
    Dana S.

The setup here is split between a grab and go counter with sandwiches and salads, baked goods, coffee, and bubble tea, and on the other side, a small bar where you can order alcoholic drinks, restaurant food, and any of the drinks from the coffee/bubble tea bar. I think they're supposed to close at 9, which is annoyingly too early for most red-eye flights, but I've sometimes seen them shuttered even earlier. I stopped by the grab and go counter a few years ago and got a fresh milk with grass jelly. It's hard to miss up a simple drink like that and theirs was good with lots of grass jelly. This time I sat at the bar to order dinner. I tried the buddha bowl and a mango passion fruit slush. The buddha bowl was a little weird; the individual components were all good, but I didn't think the masala chickpeas (DELICIOUS on their own) went well with the large-chopped raw vegetables or the wild rice blend - the vegetables cancelled out the slight sweetness of the chickpeas, and the spiced chickpeas covered up the nuance of the wild rice. The mango passion fruit slush was icier than I expected - I watched the barista make it, and it was juice + ice - no blended fruit. But I guess it's a slush, not a smoothie, so I just set my expectations wrong. It was fine even though it wasn't what I really wanted. Airport prices = roughly $30 before tip for the food and drink. Oh well. I would consider getting dinner here again and trying something else like a pasta dish.

I had their breakfast with 2 sunny side up eggs with sausage. It was surprisingly ok. My expectations were pretty low since we're at the airport, but the eggs were crackly crispy on the bottom and nicely runny yolks, the home fries were decent. The sausage was actually good quality, not some gristly fatty junk, but it could have been a bit hotter. I really should have ordered a side of toast, but wasn't sure it was an option. The hubby had a serviceable bagel with lox and cream cheese.

Salmon lox's with pickled onions, capers and arugula.

On an early flight I was looking for a hardy breakfast to start my day. With a line that moved quickly I settled on salmon lox that had pickled onions, capers on an everything bagel. It is a located by gate 70-80's. The wait was 5 minutes. Although, the images show the lox on each half of the bagel so to my surprise it was actually a breakfast sandwich. Regardless, it was exactly what I was wanting. I personally could have made a small scoop of capers to balance it, but was more than happy with what I got. Glad I stopped and had breakfast as my flight ended up being diverted. The tables are located in front more food court style.

Overcooked boba but nice staff and cute location in the international departure section of the Vancouver airport!

The worst. They wouldn't even acknowledge me sitting at the bar for 20 minutes. Don't do it!

The cocktail buns are consistently well filled with their coconut fillings and have a tender outer bun. My family really likes how soft and satisfying these buns are to eat. I tried my Portuguese egg tart first. The pastry shell is known as a thousand layer pastry with its delucate, very flaky texture and slighty savory flavour that balances the creaminess and sweet of the egg custard. I found the custard texture with its broiled surface to be as smooth and almost as creamy as the custard filled in The He Made Portuguese tart. Almost and very close. The other flaky egg tart was similar in taste and texture in both the pastry and custard but I think Kam Do bakery's version of their Portuguese egg tart is a really good second to He Made. The flaky egg tarts are also available in a cookie crust too. For $2.45 each at this bakery it is excellent value for the money when you can't get a piece in the best. The service at this bakery is very well organized to keep line ups moving. The interior is well lit with organized and labeled shelves of baked goods ready to take home. Self serve from these shelves. They also have a refrigerated section for prepared fruit filled cakes and Swiss rolls to go. Cash and cards. No American Express accepted though. I received with a box of assorted pastries, a box of wife cakes, and $30 in gift cards. This is my honest review of my visit and I wasn't required to post a review. When I came into the store, the staff were confused about what I was trying to pick up at first, but it was quickly resolved when the manager came to the front counter and I explained to her that I was one of the contest winners. The queue was short because not many customers was inside at the time so I was in and out pretty quickly. The store area was spacious and there were quite a lot of pastries on display. The pastries i received were beautifully boxed. They could definitely be presented as gifts to loved ones or work colleagues. The box was gold and red, with a golden foiled design on the lid and a gold string ribbon to keep the lid closed. The pastries themselves were gorgeous. Just looking at them made my mouth water. They were soft and crumbly to the touch. The buns of the pastry were buttery and the outer layer was very flaky with every bite. Some of the pastry buns had sesame seeds sprinkled on the top. They were all baked perfectly. The inside fillings were quite sweet but no overly sweet. There was no indication on the box on what kind of pastries they were so im not totally sure what kind of pastries i received. Some had a sweet tasting filling with an egg yolk or a century egg center, just red bean paste, or just some other type of sweet filling. I shared the pastries with my family over afternoon green tea and they were a hit! My family loved them. The wife cakes I received were very soft, tasted delicious, and sweet but not as sweet as the assorted pastries. They were filled with winter melon filling, i believe. They were also made a great pairing when they were served with tea. They were all individually wrapped with plastic wrap which helped keep them fresh. The boxed was also nicely designed with gold and red colors. My family really liked them. Overall, i think Kam Do bakery is one of the best Chinese bakeries in Richmond. Gotta give them 5 stars for their absolutely delicious pastries.

Pineapple Bun: I really wanted to get the Bo Lo Yo, but apparently, this location of Kam Do doesn't offer it, so I settled for a regular Pineapple Bun. Not doing this with butter is such a shame though because for a not super fresh pineapple bun, THIS WAS INCREDIBLE. Fluffy and not dry at all in the center. Thick cookie crust was the perfect level of sweet. If this was fresh, I think I would have died on the spot.

The walnut bread was very dry. There was a small surprise though. I noticed several items are Taishan pastries packed in plastic boxes. If we ever revisit, I would love to give those a try.

Also compared it with a few other changfen/rice roll places in Richmond and we still loved this one the most, especially at this price point ($7.50 cad with egg added) The changfen isn't in very distinct strips because it hasn't had time to cool down and take shape, but I didn't mind.
