What a lovely spot…read more I was sold from the moment I walked in as nostalgia washed over me- this place smells like the library in the small town where I grew up. (Don't worry, it's a pleasant smell- like stories and adventure!) They definitely specialize in cards and stationary, but they also have a massive collection of books. I saw some delightful pop up books and unusual stories for both children and adults. I could have spent hours browsing through all of them. They also have interesting household items and gifts, like DIY wall mounted cardboard heads, funny mugs, and pencil cases. Not to mention, their prices were quite a bit better than some other stationary shops in the neighbourhood! My favourite moment was picking up a Monty Python card ("I fart in your general direction!") that made me burst out laughing. I'll be back!

I first visited Hexagon when they were located on the east end of Whyte Ave. They pulled me in with…read moresome specialty root beers they had on the menu. When we got their, they didn't have them anymore but we enjoyed our visit all the same. It felt a little dark and certainly very busy. The space was small and it felt even more so with every table full. It was cramped. So then, why a five star review? Because of their new location! Now on the west end of Whyte Ave closer to the university, Hexagon is in a beautiful well-lit facility that just draws you in. From the street, you can see the front of house with its gorgeous lighting, industrial-style ceiling, hexagon inspired motifs and a full cafe for beverages and snacks. Not only have they created a stylish gaming cafe, they created a cafe on Whyte where you can stop in for a beverage, sit and chat at window seating overlooking 1950's era architecture without even staying to game. Smart way to expand business. After registering and ordering, you go around back to find table upon table of open space for small and large groups. The hexagons continue with a half wall that separates the well organized games from the seating so you are not bothered by people selecting games while you are trying to play. Yet, because it's partially open, you can still look at new gaming options from your seat. Such a smart layout in my opinion. Different from other locations, Hexagon went with an hourly rate per person rather than the flat rate per model used elsewhere. Hard sell when it was $2.50 an hour here and everywhere else was $5 to play all day. However, over time the other places have gone up to $7 flat rate and Hexagon has stayed at $3 per hour. Now, they have an advantage if your only staying for two hours which is plenty of time when gaming is an activity on a date rather than an all day outing. Also, the hourly rate helps turn over tables on busy nights. Some like it, some don't but it works for me.

This place is terrific. Geek heaven. Great selection of single issues and trades, and huge boxes of…read moreold archival stuff. A large gaming area for tabletop games. Tons of tempting action figures and sculptures. Books on creating comics. The staff are always helpful and willing to assist me in finding anything I can't quite place or remember. The negative reviews I've read here seem to expect some kind of big-box-store phony PR campaign from the staff. I think they are mistaking people who are naturally shy or introverted (typical comic book readers?) with being unfriendly or unwilling to help. When I've taken the time to engage with the guys who work here I've had nothing but great experiences, digging through crates to find a certain story arc with my favorite characters, getting recommendations based on other things I've enjoyed, having variant covers set aside until they're ready to go on sale, etc. I'm always greeted by someone at either door when I walk in, and even though they know me by now they always ask if they can help me find anything. I don't know what people are expecting. Complimentary tiramisu? Overall this place is a great regular stop if you're a comic book, tabletop or action figure/memorabilia collector and I strongly disagree with reviews stating that the customer service is lukewarm. If you're comfortable in any other hobbyist shop you'll be comfortable here.

Frankly I find this store overly crowded and not terribly friendly. As a woman who happens to be…read moreinterested in comic books, general geeky things, and games, I find it to be exceedingly important that there be good sight lines in a store of this variety and I find it confusing and hard to navigate as a store location. It really could lead to some uncomfortable encounters with staff or patrons simply because of the layout of the store. In addition I was there with a tall person recently and the items hanging from the ceiling hit his head. This is not good in general. It's a very disorganized clutter-filled store. And feels unusually crowded even when not many people are in there. I would much rather patronize other similar stores in Edmonton that do not have quite such a cluttered/unsafe aesthetic. It also took us a LONG time to find a staff member to help us in searching for a comic we were seeking (it was unavailable). It's good that this part of town has comics/games/etc. options for shopping but I really wish that it were more of a friendly place to shop, especially for people who are new to particular hobbies.

I posted a request for a bird book (Birds of Alberta). I had been looking for since mine had gone missing some time ago. Well what do you know - a few weeks later, they CALLED ME and let me know that they had the book I requested on hold and waiting for me. They have fabulous hours, great staff, and prices are really good too. I parked right out front, but because it was a Friday night at 10:30pm when I went to pick up, they offered to walk me to my car... it's Whyte Avenue, and later on it can be a bit... well, uncomfortable for women alone. Who DOES that anymore?! I REALLY appreciated the offer and concern for my well- being. I love coming in here to browse - and I admit, in the past couple of years of pandemic, I haven't spent any time in any business. At that time of night, and with fewer crowds on a Friday night, I might just have to come and browse again soon. I will definitely be requesting other books online - what an efficient way to shop!

After running around multiple game stores in search of (3)DS games and being told they no longer…read morecarried them, we were recommended to check out Just For Fun. We walked in without a particular game in mind, more just wanting to browse their Pokemon, Zelda, Kirby, and Fire Emblem stock, plus any other nostalgic games we came across. Sure enough, they had large selection of Nintendo games available, from GameCube, GameBoy, DS, Wii and the Switch. The store was very quiet, as we were the only customers inside during our whole visit. The front employee was very friendly and helpful, ensuring to check up on us periodically as I took my time looking through their selection. The way this store is organized makes it more suiting for those who have a good idea of what they are looking for, as most of their games are stored in cases or behind the counter. For those just browsing like I was, it is really hard to see what they have behind the counter, as there is a fair distance between you and the shelf. I did appreciate that they were alphabetically organized though! Many of their games also don't come in cases, so if you're curious about what the game is about, you have to look it up on your phone or ask the staff. The other inconvenience was that the games are not marked with prices, so again, you have to ask the employee each time which I found a little tedious. As for their game selection, there were very limited Pokemon and Zelda games, and no Fire Emblem games. That's obviously not a fault on their part, but if you have a particular game in mind, I would recommend calling ahead of time to see if they do have it available.
