I didn't even know about this place until I was googling sensory toys for my daughter and this came up. We came by one day, and I was amazed at how massive the place is. And the selection of toys! Incredible! My daughter was in heaven! Tons of sensory stuff - slime, squishies, glitter wands, a massive selection of Nee-Doh, etc etc. They also sell Schleich figurines, bunch of kits/sets for science, magic, gems, etc, and other "regular" toys. We mainly stayed in the toy section, so we didn't venture over to the hobby side, but it looked like there was tons of stuff. Place was clean and well organized. But what attracted me was the telescope accessories..filters, eyepieces, adapters, power supplies and the likes. It's the only place in Edmonton to get these items, and you'll have to drive to Didsbury and visit All-Star Telescope to get a full selection of parts and professional telescopes. read more

Wow! Talk about a hobby shop! Hobby Wholesale has everything a healthy hobbyist could possibly need! It's a great place for gifts too. My boyfriend always wanted to build a model plane and fly a remote control helicopter. So where did I go to find such things? Hobby Wholesale! The staff here are great. They are happy to answer questions and send you in the right direction when you get lost. The store has a wonderful selection and, like I said, they have everything. Be aware that building models and such is not cheap though. It can get pricey. But it's pricey everywhere. I got a little distracted on my search for the perfect gift by all of the dollhouse supplies that the have. Girls can build stuff too! I contemplated that purchase and decided to hold off until I was ready for kids (a homemade dollhouse would be a great gift for a daughter). My second pick for hobby shops. And it is by far the biggest! Website isn't near as good as the competition. But instore selection is second to none. They cover all hobbies, and just for good measure...all things Lego, Thomas & miniatures as well. One can get lost...and possibly have fun going broke in a place like this! I'vehad at least one instance of being lead to purchase the completely wrong item, and can't recal ever beinging contacted about anything they have taken my info. for to order in. This in particular I find pretty maddening. They go to the trouble to note the part, my name & phone number...then I never hear from them. This his happened on at least 4 occassions, and is the main reason for only 3 stars. But hey...din't take my word for it.. Check'em out! I have been coming to Hobby Wholesale since it first opened it's doors. I initially came mostly for the RC planes but as their store and product lines grew I had more and more reasons to come shop. The store is so big and they carry so many product lines this is like the Home Depot of hobby shops. They have such a huge selection of stuff that I always spend a lot of extra time just "window shopping" all of the cool things. The have expanded quite a bit since so those early days and now have a whole area dedicated to the younger kid crowd. Lot of cool toys for the young kids and lots of cool toys for the big kids! read more

This place is huge! I thought hobby stores were supposed to be small, claustrophobic spaces with outrageous prices. This store is the opposite of that. Hobby Wholesale claims to be one of the best stocked sources of hobby merchandise in North America and I believe them. They have the largest selection of plastic model kits of any other hobby store in the city. This includes classic cars, military, and sci-fi models from all the major manufacturers. They also have a large selection of RC stuff. What is particularly great about this store is that they have separate help counters exclusively for the RC customers. It's annoying in the other hobby shops in the city that there is only one counter for everything and you sometimes have to stand in line for forever as the RC enthusiasts discuss their RC woes with the staff. At Hobby Wholesale there is a check-out counter right by the door for quick and painless paying and you don't have to listen to some guy's war stories about how his 1SQ V-Cam Quadcopter RTF won't fly anymore as the staff pass him tissues and give him hugs. This apparently is a popular place for RC hobbyists to call for troubleshooting issues too. I overheard a phone conversation one of the employees was having with a customer about a problem with his kit. It was one of those "Houston, we have a problem-type" discussions where the employee was offering tips and tricks to a guy on how to overcome his technical difficulties. The employee sounded confident, knowledgeable, and patient. The store has a huge selection of children's products too such as activity books, puzzles, and Lego. Terrible Service. My mother purchased my son a Carrera slot car set from Hobby Wholesale. He opened it early before Christmas as we live out of town and were visiting. I set all the track up and didn't look at the cars. When I pulled one of the cars out, one of the cars had a broken pin from the factory. I also noticed how cheaply made this crap is and suspect it is straight from a Chinese factory. I packed it back up disappointed and remember how great AFX slot cars were. I went online and noticed that similar AFX tracks were being sold for the same price my mother paid for this particular track. When I tried to return it with the receipt, I was told that I could not return it. They wouldn't even take store credit and the manager would not even come out to discuss it. I swallowed my anger and walked out with this defective product. PAY THE SHIPPING FEES AND ORDER YOUR HOBBY SUPPLIES FROM A REPUTABLE DEALER THAT WILL STAND BEHIND IT'S PRODUCT. This has become a dangerous place for me to venture. I have been accompanying someone who is into model trains. About half of the huge store is dedicated to model trains, but the other half is full of crafts sets, toys, puzzles, models, and other fun things. I could not resist some inexpensive balsa wood planes that I used to play with when I was much younger. Hobby Wholesale also specializes in radio-controlled planes and helicopters. The name is actually spot on. Hobby Wholesale offers pretty much every type of crafts hobby you can imagine and then some. The stores filled with all kinds of things. They have car models, trains models, boat models, helicopters, puzzles, lego sets, kites, rockets, trains, and many other building sets. I honestly don't do any of these things and have pretty much no use for this store. That being said, I came here with a friend and walked around and was really impressed.. almost amazed. So many of the kits seemed like they would be a lot of fun to build and I ALMOST took up a hobby. Almost. The staff is really friendly and are really helpful if you have questions or difficulties completing any of the projects. If you are into this kind of stuff you will love this store. read more

I've been shopping at this business for several years, since moving to Edmonton, as I have frequented the other hobby shops in the area. I've noticed that the customer service, while it's never been great, has steadily gone downhill over the past couple of years. When asked to take something down from the wall for purchase always seems to be put out by the request and he normally throws the item to the counter. He is sorely lacking customer skills at the best of times as he lacks even the slightest of personality. Today, I went to purchase items which were clearly marked one price, with their own name marked stickers, but the items came back at three times the price on the computer. Although the items were going through at six dollars, and he was asked by the clerk for guidance, he would not sell them for the sticker price, contrary to reputable business practices. He then refused to speak with me to discuss the matter. Long and short of it is, they have lost a customer who routinely spent hundreds of dollars per year at his operation. It's not simply the few dollars I would have saved, it's the frustrating attitude and personality of he manager which drove me away. I'd strongly advise going to one of the other hobby shops in Edmonton, or order your goods online for less money and frustration. 1 Nov '17. Returned to this shop and purchased two items. One was marked a certain price and sure enough, it came up as a higher price on the cash register. This time around, the cashier changed the price to what was clearly marked on the price tag. Certainly not what was done last time, but it shows that a person purchasing items at this retailer must ensure that they pay attention when at the cash register, or you will be charged more than the shown retail price. While my husband was in the model section, I went in the opposite direction to the left when you enter. This is for the kids section where you can find lots of fun toys for kids. I saw Star Wars Lego, cute panda Playmobil, and a jewelry making kit. There was much more but I can't remember it all. Just another company that wants your money and could care less about the quality of product they sell or maintaining repeat customers. My mom buys a 20.00 Thomas the Train from them it's supposed to make noises and all that - she never checked it in the store gets it home gives it to my son - doesn't work. She phones them and asks them if she can return it girl on phone argues with her and then has to ask to speak to a manager to try and return it. But since it was opened no they won't. How do businesses that operate this way stay in business anymore? pathetic. Can't wait till I see that sign up saying "closing sale" - I'm really surprised it hasn't happened yet when they won't even backup a 20.00 children's toy. read more

Stay away from their online order option. My particular experience has left me a bit sour. I placed a small order online, and after a week of no updates on the status of the order I sent them a friendly email. After a few days and still no reply, I decided to call them through their toll-free line. Every time I tried to call the line was busy so I ended up calling their local line over long distance; that got through to someone immediately - only to be put on hold for over 8 minutes. Finally getting off hold, the representative was helpful and friendly. None of the parts I ordered were in stock. It would have been useful if they indicated the parts weren't in stock before placing the order (like retailers normally do). They placed an order for my parts 7 days after I placed my order, with an eta of 10-14 days. Basically I will be getting my parts about a month after I ordered them. I will be shopping elsewhere next time. It does seem like a great place for people local to Edmonton though. read more

Huge place with a great selection for any hobbiest! They have tonnes of supplies and even models that I've found rather difficult to find online. The staff on the other hand... I called to ask if they had a part. When I asked for details about the part to confirm it was the one I was looking for the man on the phone was annoyed that he had to "run over" there again. I'm... sorry? I decided not to ask for anymore details and inconvenience him further and decided to buy the part online instead. Other times I have gone in there and the staff really didn't seem to know much about the products they sell. I get it, it is a HUGE store that caters to a variety of hobbies but if your only answer is "I don't know I just work here"... maybe you're not trying too hard. (Btw, I was asking if these paints were safe for metal and plastic) So, good place if you go in there, you know exactly what you want and where to find it. This place is for everybody who collects toy models, builds model airplanes and helicopters and constructs doll houses. I personally don't do any of the above, but I have a friend who does, so I shopped for gifts at Hobby Wholesale on sevel occasions. The selection at this store is fantastic. For example, here you can buy everything you need to build a toy plane from scratch. All the little parts and details! The staff are quick to help you locate whatever it is you are looking for. Even though I wasn't shopping at Hobby Wholesale for myself, I couldn't help but sneak a pick of all the "girly" items they had for female hobbyists. The doll houses and all the furniture are so cute:) I wish I had the time and the patience to be able to create and decorate a doll house of my own:) After visiting this store I realized that having a hobby is not cheap. Some of the parts for model planes, helicopters and boats are really expensive! Not as expensive as the real stuff but nonetheless... If you order something from them it will take a loooong time. I ordered a plane part and it must have taken 3 weeks but other than that this place is great. Asked a simple question and got a sarcastic, condescending answer. Likely because because I didn't look like the typical hobby crowd or perhaps because I looked young. I was lookiong for some military models and had checked a few other hobby shops but when I went here, WOW is all I can say. They had so many kits that I had only seen on the web. I agree with other comments on the size and selection in this store. However be careful on the prices, we found the same stuff on Amazon for 1/3 of the price. Even with shipping etc it was still less than half of H-W price. Also we found the return policy the worst of any business. If you open the package, there are no return or exchanges, period. If the contents are damaged or missing too bad. We bought a drone and found it doesn't perform as promised. We complained a the store and were told to call the manager. We called and left a message, have not received any callback. read more

First of all the service was good and there seemed to be quite a few knowledgeable people willing to help. I purchased a husban drone ($750) after some conversation with a couple of helpful reps. I got home, put it together and realized it was missing a battery, they were excellent about switching it out and getting me on my way. However when I came back to tell them the drone never really flew just tipped over, and it was apparent the box had been opened prior to purchase the evening manager didn't really care whatsoever and just sent me on my way.
