When I first walked into Comex Hobby, I didn't see anything that was particularly interesting--just some model kits and not-so-exciting action figures. But then I turned around, and a set of giant boobs, at least giant in a miniature sense, were staring me right in the face. It was Japanese sexism in woman characters at its best. These were action figures of various characters--I think some of them might have been from video games--that were hyper-sexualized and wearing very little clothing. In fact, in some cases the figures wore no clothing, and only their hands covered the places that separate this from being pornographic. But before I go too much on a feminist rant, I did find some other really cool stuff here. Everything in this store is imported from Asia. I found all this awesome Nintendo merchandise like Mario, Yoshi, and Princess keychains, key-lights, and wallets. I wanted to buy so many of these things, and I'm already thinking about Christmas presents for people (and myself!). They even had a little stuffed doll of Domokun--you know that cute, brown character from that popular poster that says, "Every time you masturbate... God kills a kitten - Please, think of the kittens." I really wanted to buy him, to always remind me not to masturbate. My husband has purchased model supplies at Comex Hobby and asked me to picked up bare metal foil. I didn't know what it was or what it would look like so I went to the supply section and looked for it. Since I couldn't find it, I asked the sales associate if they had it. He checked with another associate and yes, they had it. They didn't have a dedicated hanger for it and it was behind another product. The packaging looked worn like it had been there for a year, or years. The last time I went, I bought a model paint rack for my husband as a gift. I asked the associate where it was as I thought this would save time than me trying to find it. They only had one left and the box was dented it but it had plastic covering it. The words on the box were written in Japanese but I hoped it wouldn't require much assembly. There always seems to be enough staff available to ask for help, if needed. The prices seem a little high but being in the mall, I would expect a bit of a mark up. I don't think the return policy is great, but then again, they wouldn't want people opening products or using them and then bringing them back. Decent store for those who like models and needs supplies, board games, and anime products. read more

Comex is a great Asia import shop. They bring in games, action figures, anime imports, etc. The store is awesome to browse and is a bit nostalgic. They carry a bunch of models, things from star wars and other sci fi flicks. Things from old video games and so on. They also carry anime costumes which would make for good halloween outfits. It's a really cool store to check out and I bet you will want to buy somethings. read more

Comex Hobby isn't really an accurate name for this business because it kind of implies that they sell . . . well comics. They're actually all about plastic models - cars, spaceships, militaria - as well as the supplies that go with them such as paints, brushes, polishing cloths, sandpaper, etc. They have a surprisingly diverse selection of paints and primers for such a small store. The staff really seem to know their stuff too. I went in looking for a window tint spray that would look good on miniature plastic windshields. "How dark do you want the tint?", is what the girl working there asked me. She was able to recommend exactly the type of product I was looking for (Tamiya - smoke ;) I came in another time to cry on somebody's shoulder about how my prepping and priming always go south. The dude behind the counter empathized and recommended a good primer spray. The prices of the paints are average but the prices of some of the models can be pretty high. Expect to be paying more since they're located in West Ed Mall, land of the high rent space. The model cars average around $25 each but specialty stuff such as the military vehicles or anything with the Batman, Star Wars, or Star Trek brand are way overpriced. Standalone hobby stores in the city charge less for that stuff. Comex Hobby has a modest selection of really expensive Asian import models and toys too. I don't know much about this sort of thing so I can't say any more about it other than the fact that they have it. The older reviews of this place really stress the Asian imports but there's honestly not very much of that here. At least anymore. It still has more Gundam stuff than any hobby shop in Edmonton though. I'm guessing that this business has shifted gears over the past few years to focus on models and hobby craft. I came into Comex today to see if they carried Funko pop vinyl figurines as im currently working on collecting the complete set from Guardians of the Galaxy. I felt welcome and well looked after almost immediately upon entering the store as the gentleman at the cash took the time to smile and nod at me even though he was ringing in another customer and a very nice young lady rushed over to me to greet as well as offer assistance. The selection here was decent and they had a few I haven't seen before but I must say at $14.95 a piece it's the highest I have ever seen Funko figurines go for that weren't rare or retired.One thing that I absolutely LOVE about Comex though is that they have their till set up to scan the already existing barcode printed on the box so there is no giant nasty store sticker adhered to the box like a second skin that you have to attempt to gingerly peel off hoping that you don't take part of the box with it. As a collector I like both my figurine as well as it's box to be in pristine shape and they really seem to get that here. Besides my beloved pop vinyl you can also find model supplies,board games,plush,and other anime collectibles. Some of the prices were alright but again there were a couple of things that I thought seemed a bit inflated. I guess it really depends on your personal beliefs though whether you are willing to spend a bit more money to support a smaller shop or want to go somewhere bigger to enjoy better savings. Great store, the staff is super friendly and really helpful. Among the large collection of board games they also carry a small selection of costumes for last minute Cosplays. I was looking for one in particular and one of the young ladies there was a total delight helping me get the right outfit together. I went into comex hobby at kingsway. I was purchasing a legend of Zelda costume. The staff would only let me try on the jacket and when I did it was a little snug. The staff made me feel at ease and said the rest of the costume would fit. So I bought the $150 costume. I was not made aware of any return or exchange policy at the time of purchase. I found out after the fact by asking if I take it home and say the pants don't fit or of I am not satisfied with out it looks. He was like all sales are final exchange only. He reassured me that it will fit. So I trusted his judgement. He seemed confident. I took the costume home and tried it on and the white shirt, pants gloves, and even the belt didn't fit. For me to make this costume work I would have to buy everything. There wasn't even any boots. The costume didn't even look like Link. It looked like a elf costume. It probably was. Even if it did fit it I probably would have been the laughing stock at my work. I found a better costume for $50 more that included boots and ear and it even looked like the character. The "manager" was very rude and unprofessional she was very young. She seemed like she was I am the manager I can treat people like shit. When I asked for the owner to call me he never did. So if you are looking for a place to get ripped off at and treated like you are a piece of garbage then shop at comix hobby. read more

This store sells bootleg anime figures. Be wary of what you buy and be wary of cheap looking anime figures. Hi I wanted to let you know that both locations of comex hobby are selling anime bootleg figures. I have purchased many figures from various figure making companies, and have found that half my collection is bootlegged. they did not have authentication stickers, and usually anime figures will be distributed through a company called  AAA Anime Distribution. I have not seen any of the stickers or information on my figure boxes. I have gotten figures from other stores around Edmonton that have had stickers, and have been processed by AAA Anime Distribution. I just wanted to let someone know of the injustice of bootleg figures, and that I I have put out a warning to my friends and family about bootlegs being sold at the stores. I don't appreciate spending my earned money on bootlegged figures, and I shouldn't have to worry about bootlegged figures. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I will be making a list of bootlegs I have found so people can be aware of what they look like and how to avoid them. I will be more cautious I suggest everyone do the same. When I tried emailing them about the problem it gave me an error and the facebook page and Twitter page have been shut down. Please watch out for bootleg figures from this store. read more
