This place is terrific. Geek heaven. Great selection of single issues and trades, and huge boxes of old archival stuff. A large gaming area for tabletop games. Tons of tempting action figures and sculptures. Books on creating comics. The staff are always helpful and willing to assist me in finding anything I can't quite place or remember. The negative reviews I've read here seem to expect some kind of big-box-store phony PR campaign from the staff. I think they are mistaking people who are naturally shy or introverted (typical comic book readers?) with being unfriendly or unwilling to help. When I've taken the time to engage with the guys who work here I've had nothing but great experiences, digging through crates to find a certain story arc with my favorite characters, getting recommendations based on other things I've enjoyed, having variant covers set aside until they're ready to go on sale, etc. I'm always greeted by someone at either door when I walk in, and even though they know me by now they always ask if they can help me find anything. I don't know what people are expecting. Complimentary tiramisu? Overall this place is a great regular stop if you're a comic book, tabletop or action figure/memorabilia collector and I strongly disagree with reviews stating that the customer service is lukewarm. Frankly I find this store overly crowded and not terribly friendly. As a woman who happens to be interested in comic books, general geeky things, and games, I find it to be exceedingly important that there be good sight lines in a store of this variety and I find it confusing and hard to navigate as a store location. It really could lead to some uncomfortable encounters with staff or patrons simply because of the layout of the store. In addition I was there with a tall person recently and the items hanging from the ceiling hit his head. This is not good in general. It's a very disorganized clutter-filled store. And feels unusually crowded even when not many people are in there. I would much rather patronize other similar stores in Edmonton that do not have quite such a cluttered/unsafe aesthetic. It also took us a LONG time to find a staff member to help us in searching for a comic we were seeking (it was unavailable). It's good that this part of town has comics/games/etc. options for shopping but I really wish that it were more of a friendly place to shop, especially for people who are new to particular hobbies. read more

I've been here a number of times over the years, and it's always been a mixed bag. The Good: Really good selection of comics, manga, figures, Magic the Gathering cards, and geek apparel. They also carry some Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, but I think they've started to phase out YGO in the last few years. The Bad: Lukewarm customer service, they always seem more interested in chatting with their regular customers rather than helping out a new one. The store itself is pretty disorganized and cramped in some spots. Overall, a good place to browse if you're in the area, but sadly fits a lot of the traditional stereotypes about comic stores being messy and somewhat uninviting to newcomers. read more

I was out wandering Whyte today and figured I would check these guys out and see what they have for Sailor Moon collectibles and Funko pop figures. For a place that seems concerned with shoplifting and has a sign on the door warning that just about every kind of bag imaginable needs to be left at the front counter it was surprising how little interaction the staff is willing to have with customers in order to enforce these policies. I got a hello upon entering the store from someone in a corner of the store but that person did not come up to the front at all to see if I needed any help or what I came in looking for today. I didn't really notice any of the dust that some other yelp users have commented on but I definitely agree they seem to have too many things here. So much so that some of the things I picked up and looked at didn't have price tags. One or two things you can chalk up to just accidental oversight but it was definitely more than just one or two things. Price wise I found them to be kind of mid range. I know some things I have gotten cheaper at other stores but I have seen them more expensive in places as well. A few of their Funko I have not seen anywhere else and had I come in looking to spend more money I likely would have walked out with them. Please keep in mind however while reading this I can't offer much in the way of opinion on their comics and manga as I don't read a ton and the few that I do enjoy they didn't appear to have here. Up at the till paying for the item I did pick out was kind of a weird experience. The gentleman seemed nice enough but eager to get rid of me so he could go back to talking to his coworker and the fellow who was ahead of me in line that had already paid. I think this place must have a set group of favorite regulars for sure. I was asked if I had a "file" with them and when I told them no nothing more was mentioned of it and he just asked for his money. If it involved any kind of club card with discounts I would have loved to have been made aware but again he just didn't seem that interested in conversing with me. Would I come back again? Probably but if I could find something closer to my home with the same selection that would likely effect my answer a bit. It is always a good idea to pay attention and respect to your regulars but don't get so caught up in the usual faces that you ignore the opportunity to to forge relationships with new customers. read more

This is the newest location of Warp 1 Comics on Whyte Ave. It's a pretty large store, and they have everything for the comic and collectibles lover! My boyfriend was pretty excited about the store, as he's into all that stuff, and I just tagged along. The first thing we saw were their collectible bobble-heads. Star Wars, Simpsons, Marvel comics heroes, you name it. They have all the classic comic superheroes like Superman, Spiderman, and Batman (along with all the evil villains), and new crime-fighters like characters from the tv series Heroes. I don't know much about this subject, but it was still cool to browse around and see everything they had. They have talking action figures, t-shirts, comic books and magazines, cards, posters, shot-glasses, lunchboxes, and pencil cases, just to name a few items. I thought the R2-D2 backpack was pretty cool. My boyfriend just shook his head when I tried it on though. There's a special Japanese manga corner, where they have books, magazines, and dvd sets. There are action figures from series like Sailor Moon and Inuyasha too. I got pretty excited when I found a pack of Astro Boy collector cards. I grew up loving Astro Boy, he was the coolest! There are too many characters and series they have here to name them all, but others I haven't mentioned yet include the Super Mario team, Final Fantasy, Streetfighters, Lord of the Rings, Buffy, World of Warcraft, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Archie, TinTin, and Family Guy. The staff seem pretty knowledgeable on the subject, because I didn't understand a word they were saying when they were helping out other customers. It was like a whole other language they were speaking! So even if you're a non-comic lover like me, you'll probably still have fun in this store. And if you are a comic-lover, you'll most likely go crazy. In a good way, of course. read more

Wow, Warp 1 has totally changed, since it's moved. The old location was fairly small and cramped. It was also very expensive and a total rip-off and is why I totally wrote off that store a long time ago. I became curious though, when I saw that this store moved way down Whyte Avenue by 99th Street. I was impressed, even before I walked in, when I saw a full-sized Yoda in the window. Then when I walked in, I was even more impressed, because this place is huge. I was first attracted to the Futurama figures, and they had some bendy ones that I have never seen before. These were pretty expensive, but not any more than other comic stores. The oversized Simpsons figures were really awesome, and they only made me wish money grew on trees. I also liked the Battlestar Galactica figures, but they didn't have any Starbuck left, so I was sad. I saw a Batman Barbie here that I bought at London Drugs some years ago for $6, and they were selling at Warp 1 for $65. Honestly, I'm not so sure it's worth that much. I did see a few inexpensive, cool items like Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman tin banks. I might get these as stocking stuffers. I hate to admit it, but I used to love Sailor Moon the TV show (yes, as an adult), and I was excited, when I saw they had Sailor Moon action figures. They were expensive though, and I only wish I had liked Sailor Moon when I worked at Wal-Mart and could have bought these for super cheap. I'm not into role-playing games, but this took up a large portion of the store. When I walked through it, one of the workers appologized to me for playing 1960s cartoon songs--not sure what that was about. I think I like Warp again. Yep, I really do. read more

I have very mixed feelings about Warp One- it has some of the best selection of comics, graphic novels, board games, Magic cards and gaming supplies in the city but the store's extensive inventory comes at the cost of any sort of comfortability and personality. Every square inch of the store is covered in nerd product which can make for a great treasure hunt but also lends itself to a cluttered, chaotic feel. When I'm shopping for board games and comics I appreciate good organization, an inclusive environment and helpful staff. I think that Warp One is firmly middle of the road on all of the above and my experiences at the store have been wildly inconsistent. Some of Warp's staff are friendly, engaging and helpful but others will be reading or gaming while customers are in the store which has never sat well with me. One fantastic feature of the store for the Magic players out there is the ability to order cards online and have them shipped to the store. The online inventory is reasonably priced, well-indexed and have some great promotions from time to time. I've gone to Warp for a few board and card gaming events and they've all been well-run but don't feel quite as inclusive as events at other stores. Once again, Warp One serves as a great touchpoint for various nerd activities but in my personal experience it fails to engage customers the way some other stores do. Overall Warp has an excellent selection and covers all of your comics and games needs but my very inconsistent experiences leave a little bit to be desired from time to time. read more

Warp 1 is very important as one of the major card/tabletop gaming locations in Edmonton. That said, it's not the strongest comic store out there. They do have a very large collection of product compared to everyone else in the area. They carry the usual fare of comics, manga, graphic novels, and card games, but they excel in their wide selection of board games, collectibles, and toys. The issue is that almost all of it is overpriced. They seem to be of the opinion that even if something is marked up heavily, someone will buy it at some point. Everything is a bit too expensive here, and their staff aren't really friendly enough to overcome that. The staff themselves are a bit strange, and spend a lot of time chatting to the regulars, creating an in-crowd which is a bit off-putting. It's not an enjoyable shopping experience when half a dozen people, who are only using the shop as a hangout, are shouting at and making inside jokes with the store staff. The store is also incredibly messy, as if the staff were trying to arrange their merchandise attractively but were distracted halfway through and never finished. Many boxes have a thick film of dust on them, which also makes things a lot less attractive. In short, the store has good selection, but is overpriced and has an alienating atmosphere. read more

This place is a mess - there's too many things in here, and it reminds me of when I lived in my mom's basement (maybe that's what they're going for - it may be familiar surroundings for many of the clientele). Love this place. It's got everything I have ever looked for in regards to hobby/geek stuff, and the staff are friendly and helpful, always giving me great tips, advice and news in regards to whatever hobby we may be talking about. As far as prices, things are typically fairly expensive, but no more expensive than I've seen at any other store of this nature. Also, unless it's a super rare, needs-to-be-mint-condition book, they have happily removed the plastic wrap from a book (I have done this with comic and d&d) so that I could browse the contents before purchasing. Even if I don't end up buying the unwrapped book they don't get annoyed or anything, I was told it's very simple for them to re-wrap it. That being said, you can probably disregard any complaints about being unable to look before you buy. Ask and you shall receive (duh). read more

I remember walking into their old store years ago. I was always amazed at their huge selection of comics and other collectables, as well as trading cards. I'll admit, I was totally addicted to those Magic and Pokemon cards. At some point I grew out of that phase, and with a more down-to-earth frame of mind, realized their prices were exceedingly high. I eventually stopped going to the store because of this and never had a reason to pass by the area. As I was passing by a few months ago, I noticed they had moved locations. I walked right in and immediately was drawn back into the comic book/collectors world. I was really impressed at the transformation the store has gone through. The spacious layout makes it easy to navigate around, and the staff seemed always eager to help me out or answer any of my questions, especially regarding their robot figurines. Even if I'm not buying anything, I enjoy walking in an browsing their collection. Parking can be a bit tricky. I'm usually lucky finding something along the sidewalk in front of the store, however there is also additional parking behind the store. This was an awesome place to go to find unique presents for those 'hard to shop for' people on my Christmas list. read more

What most people find as negatives, I enjoy about Warp 1. Sure the staff can be stand-offish, but that's part of the charm. Disorganized and random? Sure, so you have to hunt for the treasures - that's half the fun. The only negative I find about the place is that high prices for items....I mean REALLY HIGH PRICES. I stopped in here while shopping on Whyte one evening. I used to go to the original location of Warp 1 way back when I started getting into comics. I was looking in particular for Archie comics and alternative/mature titles. I definitely found more than I could have bargained for, although the store is a bit hard to navigate simply because it is SO huge. Fortunately, I found the clerk to be helpful and noticed she was helping other customers as well. The store has a huge focus on gaming, and there was a large group of people playing something in a large section of the store. I will be back - I had a lot of fun wandering around and looking at everything. read more

They have a bunch of collectors items Comics are the main attraction but I was surprised at how many other items they carried. They had t-shirts, posters, magazines and more. The store is large and everything is set up in away that it can be easily navigated. I didn't buy anything from here and I doubt I ever will, but it is really cool to check out and if you love your comics you will definitely buy something from here. read more

Great shop. I'm there at least once every couple months usually hunting for anime collectibles or the rare comic that I've picked up. As a Sailor Moon collector they've listened to me and tried bringing in items related to the series. They've asked if something could be ordered when I find I can't purchase it at that time or in my size (particular item was clothing). The store IS a bit crowded, but it's large and there's a lot of stuff. They do their best to make it organized and all items visible. Isles are pretty much always clear and easy to walk. The owner (I believe hes' the owner?) seems super nice. I mentioned that I was hosting a panel and purchasing goods for prizes. He donated a related item to the cause. Great place to shop for both new and used. It's a comic shop. I wouldn't call the service outgoing, but everyone is friendly. They're just a bunch of nerds just like you or myself. read more

The service here has really gone down hill. I like the big store, parking is never a problem, but the last time the fiance and I were here, we were never greeted, talked to, acknowledged, asked if we needed anything... it almost seemed like whenever we went to a particular part of the store, the staff moved elsewhere. Sure, comic book stores are not the types of places that you expect stellar, one on one service, but a hello would have been lovely. We left without buying anything (even though there were some things that caught our eye) and when elsewhere. Prices at most of the comic shops in the city are pretty steady (they'll vary most for things like collectibles and variant/phantom variant covers) and I'll gladly pay a little more to get good service. It's still worth a browse every once in a while, but not a special trip. read more

The positive is that it has more T-shirts and comic-related stuff than anywhere I've ever seen. The negative is that you're going to be paying a lot for it. It's overpriced, and they wrap all of their trade paperbacks in plastic wrap so that you can't actually look at them before you buy them, so often you buy something and find out it wasn't what you thought it was. That happened to me a few times before I stopped going there. Staff didn't seem like they read a lot of comics. All in all, it was alright, and I'd go back for a few shirts, but it wasn't the best in the city. read more

There are quite a few gaming stores around Edmonton, this one being one of the worst when it comes to customer service. My wife and me went in today looking to buy a booster box for the new Magic: The Gathering set that came out October 5th. When we approached the counter, the fellow that eventually got around to greeting us stood up and asked if he could help us (important to note he was shelling boosters of cards and putting the rares in their binder) I asked him if we could pick up a box, to which he replied, 'We can't afford to sell them as boxes at the moment, so 165 dollars for one." We were shocked, they had over 10 visible boxes behind the counter and at most you'll find them for 120, even from the most 'upscale' of nerd shops. I told him I would have to take my business elsewhere and we unloaded the items we were going to buy onto the counter and left, rather annoyed at the service we received and the lack of any sort of tact, the guy had a very condescending tone when dealing with us and only got up after we waited for 5 minutes. Do yourself a favor and walk down the street a bit to a competitor, at least there you're treated like a valued customer, or at the very least, are greeted upon entry. read more

The Warp One Experience is lately typified by unfriendly and unhelpful staff more concerned with talking to their friends than helping customers. This is the first time I've been to Warp One since they moved to their new location. Case in point: today, I went to the store around 3 pm looking for some items, and wandered around the games section for about 20 minutes, clearly trying to find something. Meanwhile, an employee behind the counter at the back talked to some girl, completely ignoring me. Once i actually found one of the things i was looking for and went to pay for it, the cashier was clearly annoyed that i was interrupting him from reading his comic book. They still treat customers like criminals with their bag check policy, and I can only conclude that the staff work there because they aren't suited for dealing with the public at large. Take your money elsewhere. read more

This store, bothers me. Immensely. The location is a nightmare, the organization is horrendous, and frankly, the staff don't know anything about the majority of their product lines. Warp should move into a slightly smaller venue and stop dealing in comics. The store is always a dusty mess. I've seen employees not look up from the book they were reading to acknowledge customers. I've in fact been on the receiving end of an employee completely snubbing me. The statues and big ticket items never seem to go anywhere, and they in fact have a big area of collectables, blocked off from consumers. The hours for this location are also pretty ridiculous considering the location. They have the worst selection in the city, and what little they have seems to be entirely disorganized. If you go in at the wrong time you could also be overcome by throngs of obnoxious youth playing yu-gi-oh or magic, who get so wrapped up in it they forget they are in public and not at home. In August of 2011, when the New 52 was starting, I asked a staff member what they thought about it, and he very flatly explained he had no idea what I was talking about. And I could tell by the confusion on his face he'd never even heard of the publishing initiative less than 3 weeks before it launched. I then walked towards the back of the store where a female employee was discussing with a husband and wife, that she knew exactly where every pair of visible breasts was in each D&D rulebook. The staff here might be knowledgeable about the gaming facets of their business. But they know next to nothing about comic books. I had a friend who ordered a statue through Warp 1 once, when the item came in the staff couldn't find the one that was put away specifically for him, so he bought a display model, only to come back two weeks later to get his bi-weekly pickup, and had the staff attempt to FORCE him to buy the same statue he purchased that was reserved for him that they couldn't find before. Needless to say he's not shopping there anymore. When I'm on Whyte Ave I pop in every time just because I love the product so much, and it has the presence of a nice museum, (since nothing ever moves or seems to sell), but refuse to buy here on principle. For one of the nicest locations, and the biggest square footage of all the comic shops in Edmonton, this place is a complete letdown. Especially considering the enormous potential. read more

I decided recently to rekindle a childhood hobby of collecting comic books, primarily for investment purposes. My first stop was Warp, since one of the shops was run by a friends brother. I found the prices on older books somewhat inflated, but overall almost reasonable, I suppose. When my friends brother moved on in employment, I relocated to a closer Warp store, and continued the pre-orders of a slew of DC "New 52" titles I intended to collect. Man, was I ever disappointed with the service. Like a previous poster, I would have to say that I found the customer service to border on abysmal. It almost seemed as if I was troubling the staff to do anything for me. My orders kept coming in, filling my box, but it was a crap-shoot to hope that they actually got the order right. Almost without exception, I was either shorted of items or found unwanted "extras" in my bin. For the amount of money being spent, I certainly expected a higher degree of respect and attention than I received. I came to find out that much of the attitude was not simply a problem with the younger, disinterested staff, but also because of the general market attitude in the hobby these days, or so I was told. Little did I know that the comic collecting hobbyists were a dying breed...nobody really cares about collecting comics anymore, they are a disposable entertainment. At least this was what the "manager" told me, in essence. Ancient folk like me...those who were once accustomed to receiving precisely what they ordered, and to receive their new items in mint condition...well, we are just a nuisance, apparently. I cannot fairly say that any of the staff were rude, or even impolite. What I can say is they are disinterested and less than professional. This appeared to be the company attitude at the two smaller stores, with the main being slightly better. Needless to say, I cancelled my account and moved on. If you cannot get things straight after speaking with the manager, as simple a task as it was...well, it was time to move on then. Fast forward a little later, and I have found the precise opposite with Happy Harbor thus far. The atmosphere cheerier, the environment cleaner, and it is clearly more professional, favoring a customer service ethic. After my third visit, the staff know and welcome me by name every time I return. I have recently resumed pre-ordering, so I have yet to see how how the attention-to-detail quality pans out, but based on my experience thus far, I have no concerns. I have no grudge against one, nor water to carry for the other, I am just a simple consumer desiring quality product and service. That said, it is the difference between night and day when one compares Warp with Happy Harbor. read more

I LOVE THIS STORE! For a really good selection of manga - cheaper than many places, I go to Warp 1 (they have Warp 2 and Warp 3 as other locations). As well, if you have an account, they will order in and reserve any ongoing series, even difficult to find ones, and hold it for you to pick up. With free membership, they sell you the manga at US cover price with no GST. They are also fantastically helpful, with great, friendly, well-informed owners and staff. They have an amazing stock of comics, manga, board games and rpgs - comparable in price but often cheaper than any other store I've been to, usually including online - and their selection cannot be beat! I ALWAYS check them first for items I'm looking for as well as for gift ideas. They have great t-shirts (that easily comprise half of my nephew's wardrobe), as well as, figurines, anime, music cds and all sorts of fun collectables. I've been going to them since I moved to Edmonton in 1993. PS They DO accept credit cards, but are a fairly small store franchise, so they have to pay a larger surcharge to accept credit, so I always try to pay with cash or debit. read more

I went to Warp 1 the other today read to spend my hard earned money. Upon entering the store I was immediately accosted by a sales clerk demanding I hand my bag over to him. I do not appreciate being labelled as a crook simply because I have a backpack and will not hand my bag over to a sales clerk. If a store doesn't trust their customers why should their customers trust them. It's there loss, I turned around and spent several hundred dollars at a competitor that day and I will never spend money at Warp 1. If you want to be treated with respect and fairness stay away from this business. read more

Fantastic comic book shop! I don't buy much modern era stuff, mainly back issues from the copper era and prior but its clear Warp 1 has virtually any modern title you could want and an excellent selection of graphic novels. There's a back issue section I love to thumb through and often find old issues to complete my collection. Lots of shops have this kind of stuff available, but where Warp 1 really shines compared to the competition is with comic book supplies and other paraphernalia. I've ordered specialty books, collection supplies, and hard to find Gerber mylars and fullbacks from the owner, James, and he's always able to get me what I order and at a great price! Definitely give this place a look! read more

There's like two helpful people for someone that is wanting to start playing magic. Every time for a month now I come on a friday at around 5:30 and told that some event is going on and I'm unable to play my first game of magic, thus I stop going to warp 1. That being said those two people have helped a tone in making my deck. Just wish I could play it. read more

My husband and I used to go to this Warp store constantly. We'd trade and buy MTG stuff all of the time. However, the last few times we have gone in there we have had the rudest guy help us. Apparently he is a new hire and only works weekends. But, he said out loud to another employee regarding my husband "can you come help this guy? He is annoying me like a motha fucka." After that my husband and I were certainly set off of coming back for awhile. Also, we complained to the manager. Next time we went in the same guy was working. However, he wasn't the person behind the MTG counter. But, he decided to come back there and grace us with his presence by saying to Cam about my husband "oh so your dealing with this asshole?" Needless to say we had enough and complaining to the store didn't seem to make a difference. I think we are turned off of Warp One for quite some time. The store itself isn't the problem but this particular employee has ruined it for us. Perhaps in the future we'll come back but for now we've taken our business elsewhere. read more

This is a gigantic game store that has lots of variety. It's a dream shop for boys and men who are avid gamers. Whether you're into comics of D&D, they've got what you're looking for or can probably get it. They used to be located on 81st Street, and that was a decent sized store. I used to go there with an old boyfriend who was the coolest sort of comic book geek. Their new store in on Whyte Ave. now. I go with my partner, who is into D&D. He says this place is good for hard-core D&D guys 'cause they sell the old-rule D&D stuff they like. They also have three-foot models of Clive Barker's "Tortured Souls" which look like characters in the Saw movies, hung up from hooks or tortured in various ways and warped into adult, almost sexual poses. Creepy, but kind of neat. Another perk at Warp 1 is they've re-priced books to compensate for the change in the dollar so you pay less than the Canadian price on the back of the merchandise. This place has remained my go to spot for comics for what must be almost 10 years now. If you know what you're looking for, get a membership, set up a pull list, and count on them to have what you've asked them to have. They've never hassled me about picking up my books, even when I tell them I've bought stuff that they kept for me at other stores already. Contrary to some of these other reviews, the people at the main counter have always been friendly and helped me find back issues hidden in the huge section of long boxes they keep stocked with them. If they don't have something there (sometimes because of it's awesome location, books sell out quick if you didn't pull list them), they've called the other two Warp stores for me to track one down. I find that they have a wide variety of independent books and collectables too. I don't know where, short of Amazon.com, anyone is finding greater variety. Maybe the gaming staff are the let down, I can't say for sure, but the few MTG cards I've asked for have always been easily found. I've never played there, but the section reserved for games is also bigger than any other that I've seen. Don't know what more can really be asked of a comic store. Industry leader, hands down. read more
