I really enjoyed the show. The venue, inside the beautiful Faena Hotel, is fairly small and very rojo but also has an upscale feel. Our tables were right by the stage and I got a close-up view of the great dances and clearly professional dancers. They offered a choice of red, white or sparkling wine and were very generous with the continuous pours. They also offered an option of still or sparkling water. The menu was not elaborate but the food was pretty good. The starter was a small tasty empanada. From there they offered three choices for an appetizer, a main course and a dessert. I chose the shrimp ceviche which had dried plantains as a base and avocado throughout. It was good but needed a bit of seasoning. The same can be said for the main salmon dish I ordered. It was atop puréed broccoli and that helped immensely. I tried my wife's ribeye steak and was unimpressed- it was very fatty and also needed seasoning. Interestingly, they didn't offer salt and pepper until we were half way through the main course. For the dessert I had a small chocolate dish and my wife a small cheesecake (the smallest cut I have ever seen but nicely decorated). It was okay. The staff were nice and professional. This was a great (though pricey) experience! We booked through viator for the dinner and show and got front row seats. The dinner is a 3 course meal with unlimited drinks (wine and soft drinks). The dinner was very good we thought. To start I had the mushroom tart which was very good. Then we both had the salmon which was also very good. We also both had the chocolate dessert which we really enjoyed. My husband really enjoyed the dry Chardonnay too, which the servers were more than happy to continue to fill. The show was great! 6-8 couples of dancers performed in various mini shows throughout the evening as well as 2 singers and a live band throughout. It was an engaging show and a very nice venue. Recommend getting a cab like we did because the venue is on the water away from the major part of the city where the majority of hotels are. read more

When in Buenos Aires, attending a tango show is a must but how to choose? There are a wide variety of shows from big Las Vegas-style productions to small intimate caberet shows. After a lot of research I still couldn't decide so ended up here at Rojo (red) Tango. Having never attended a show of this sort before, I've no basis for establishing any sort of rating, but here are my impressions. This show consists of around 6 pairs of dancers and two singers-one man and one woman. There's a live 5-piece band consisting of an amazingly spirited pianist, a violinist, two men playing squeeze boxes and one standup bass). The show lasted around 100 minutes and is held in a low-ceiling space with a small stage raised a few inches above the floor. The place is bathed in Red light to reinforce the name. The show consists of around 20 or so musical pieces with different groups of couples expressing the dance. There were a ton of costume changes perhaps reflecting dance styles of different eras-from men in top hats to flapper outfits to 60's go-go costumes to one dance that looked like a sexy version of Flashdance. There is a lot of athleticism throughout with spins, lifts and fancy footwork. Like all shows I researched, you can buy the show with dinner or without. We bought just the show ($220 per person or $190 in cash-us) and either choice comes with unlimited local wine, beer, tea or coffee, water and soft drinks. The tables closest to the front are given to the people buying the dinner. We were at a cozy table for two near the band on a raised area but still only 30 feet from the stage. The challenge from most of the seats except the very front row is that you can really only see the top half of the dancers. As tango consists in part with lots of fancy foot work, I felt the theatre and sight lines were a negative. I probably wouldn't recommend this theatre for that reason even though in many of the numbers the artists danced on the bar or moved around the cabaret space. I'm glad we went to it and were I given a future chance would probably want to be in a higher-ceiling space with a stage much higher above the audience to really appreciate the artistic and technical qualities of the dance. read more

I should have paid attention to the AI summary "high price point, poor views from back-row seats, and sometimes, a "cheesy" or unauthentic atmosphere." We went and were SO disappointed. In addition, the price we were quoted was in USD and to pay in USD you needed to pay in cash which we were not prepared for. - so our entrance for 3 was higher than quoted. The room has a very low stage and because we did not eat dinner there we were seated in the back. You could not see performers from their waist down which is where tango happens. Front row table guests held up cellphones and took videos for most of the show further blocking our view and a nearby table was drinking and rowdy and management just shrugged when we asked them to do something. Maybe it was a great show years ago but it needs serious updating so you can see the show instead of them just adding motions with their hands which is really not tango. The costumes are great as are the musicians although some of the costumes are guys naked to the waist and women in lingerie which is probably to distract from the fact that you can not see the tango happening! Save your money and your time. Locals we found out later know all about how disappointing this show now is; travel agents who all must get seated at the front tables still need to catch on. read more

During a 2-day visit to BA we secured a table at Rojo Tango. Who can come to Argentina and NOT go to a tango show?! This. Was. Fabulous. If you can go. Go. Super pricey, but are you going to go all the way to Buenos Aires and not partake in some excellent tango in the form of dinner and a show? Look, there's much better food to be had in Buenos Aires- and wine too. But the food was decent and the wine kept flowing. Which is a good thing because as I'm sure you'd agree, everything is better after copious amounts of red wine. But I digress... besides the somewhat over-the-top, mediocre singing, we really enjoyed our time here. The hotel lobby and entrance were way frou-frou in an entertaining way (be sure to check out the ridiculously head-to-toe marbled bathroom replete with swans). And the dancing with live music was quite good. We're glad we went... one thing though- don't be fooled by whatever the booking agents tell you- some seats are better than others. Also, discounts can be had if you use a local tour guides. Just an FYI. read more

Artistically this is one of the best shows I've seen of any genre on any continent. I haven't seen any choreography on Broadway that was this compelling since Fosse. Each of the dancers was as polished as the ballet dancers I've seen win the International Ballet Competition. The musicians could each hold the stage for a solo concert and were even more dynamic in ensemble. But the costumes!!! Gorgeous and tasteful! The costumes enhanced each note of music and each piece of choreography. No matter where you are in the world, fly to Argentina to see this show. Easy booking process but seating was an issue since the stage is not elevated so it was hard to see the action. For the price, wish I would have booked something else. It was easy enough to book the tickets by submitting an inquiry via their website and arranging the car service. The driver arrived a few minutes early and we were off. The driver's car was clean and everything was fine but it wasn't anything fancy, just a Toyota Corolla. In reality, it would have been cheaper to book an Uber because of the tips the driver expects. I only booked the show and not dinner. Therefore, by the time I arrived, only seats on the back were open. We were quickly seated and offered wine or champagne. The main issue with the show is that the stage is not elevated. So even though the venue is small, we had to watch through 7-9 tables so there were a lot of obstructions. We could only see the upper bodies of the dancers, none of the footwork and kicking that tango is famous for. The view was a really quite disappointing. The dancing itself was fun and the dancers were super athletic. I had asked customer service ahead of time if there were better seats with better views and they said all seats are VIP seats but that's definitely not true. Since we had just one day , our last day in BA to see a show, we booked this thru our hotel concierge. Then I read all the negative reviews, and went in prepared for a ripoff. Instead, we had a fabulous time. We were picked up on time, we had front row seats, dinner was promptly served, the steaks we ordered were perfectly cooked, the show started just after 10 pm and went on till 11:30. With 10 dancers, 2 singers, and the band, it was very dynamic, a lot of costume changes, the music evoking different moods, energetic, martial, languid, sensual, dreamy, the dancers were excellent. Our driver was waiting for us , and dropped us off promptly. Altogether it was a wonderful evening, our last in BA, so a grand finale. The whole experience, but for one thing, would rate 5 stars. And that thing has to do with the variability of price depending on how you book and what deal you get. In our case our hotel concierge asked us if we were ready to pay USD cash, an we said yes, and a price of $220 per person, which we accepted. The bill for two of us when presented at our table was $540, but they agreed to the negotiated amount, and told us it did not cover the tip. We had such a good time, I was going to tip handsomely anyway, and we tipped the driver separately as well. I think we would have been more comfortable paying the negotiated amount up front to the manager, than getting a much higher amount on the tab. To net out, it's not cheap, but if you've come all the way to BA you've got to see a tango show, and then you may as well splurge a bit on a really good one. I have very mixed opinions on this venue. I was really looking forward to seeing some exceptional Argentine tango shows while visiting Buenos Aires, and while visiting another hotel in the city, we asked the concierge for some recommendations and they told us the Rojo show was one of the best. And after seeing a few different ones, I have to agree. The theatre was small and intimate, with an exceptional live band, and the quality of the dancing and performance was absolutely fantastic! One of the main things to appreciate of the Argentine tango is the intricate footwork, so it really is important to have a front row seat to the performance if possible. So the cons: We felt a bit ripped off, with what we were promised and what we got. My first tip is, don't book ANY shows through a hotel concierge....they take a cut, so the price goes up drastically than if you buy it directly through the venue itself. Secondly, the show was very expensive, nearly $200 US dollars, but it was supposed to come with transportation to and from the venue from wherever you are lodging, plus unlimited alcohol. Well the concierge who booked the show for us recommended we show up to the venue early (it's at the Faena Hotel, and the property is absolutely gorgeous so we wanted to walk around and take some photos and explore before the 10:30 showtime). We asked the concierge to have our pickup come get us at 8:45 so we would have time to see the hotel, and we stood right next to him while he made the call and confirmed the pick up time with us. However, come 8:45, we waited outside in the rain and the cold for over half an hour before we finally just caught a cab on our own to the venue. Once we arrived at the venue, we told them that our transport never came to pick us up, and they told us the transport was scheduled for 9:30. Ok..... Next, unlimited alcohol was offered as part of the show package. That is NOT the case. They bring you a drink at the beginning of the evening, and only came once to refill during the performance. So "unlimited" drinks turned out to only be two drinks. Finally, at the end of the show, the servers went around to every table and handed out drink vouchers for the hotel bar that was next door to the showroom, inviting everyone to stay for a drink. One of the servers even took our remaining glass of water, placed it on a tray and escorted us over to the bar area. My friend went to inquire about our transport back- she was informed that we missed our transport back, and that they only offer it for 20 minutes after the tango show ends. And he had the nerve to tell my friend, "Lady, you are having trouble with your transport." Ummmmmm, then why are you escorting people to the bar and handing them drink vouchers???? They told us they would still take us home, but we had to leave right then - I didn't even get to finish my drink! So, just beware. Go for the tango and nothing else. OK there is plenty of decent wine as well. The dinner/food is really just an afterthought - it's ok at best. My husband and i both had the same - the shrimp cocktail on potatoes, salmon (mine was overcooked and nearly inedible and my husband's first piece came with the plastic that it was frozen in still on it! He did get another that was much better prepared than mine) and finally a very dense chocolate cake for desert. That being said the dance is amazing! We were lucky enough to have a table for two in the front row and the show was awesome! The dances were broken up by a male and female singer who were ok, but the dancers were so good they made up for all the minuses. You could seriously feel their passion. They made use of the entire room even dancing on the bar! Great costumes and choreography. Amazing athleticism of the dancers. We just went for the show and had dinner elsewhere. The dancers were awesome. We were not a fan of the singers. Especially the woman. She had a terrible voice and was way too loud. The male singer was ok but if they would cut the singers out completely, I would recommend it. The venue is very small and intimate. It was pretty expensive for what you got though. We paid $220 per person. The show lasted about an hour and a half. I would have rather spent the money on a ballet, opera, or concert back in the states. The production value was not there but when in Buenos Aires tango it is. read more
