Great chorizo tacos and couple of cold local crafts. The chorizo was some of the best sausage I've had around town. Wife loved the BBQ chicken tacos as well. And a surprise, the pineapple salsa and chips. Wow. I didn't think I'd care for it but it was really good. Try it. Was an awesome afternoon early evening on the outside seating. Their black bean burger is my favorite, followed closely by the shrimp salad and either of the fish tacos. Great outside atmosphere and super dog friendly. They also carry a decent amount of local brews on tap. Don't let the crowded patio intimidate you. I don't frequent this place on Friday nights, but I've never had to wait longer than a few minutes for a prime outdoor spot. read more

Rojo is a bar that serves mexican food. It has a great atmosphere and is located in the heart of highland park. The crowd is a business/hipster mix and the food is tasty. They have a spacious patio so you can people watch and they are located next to a laundromat. read more

This used to be my normal Tuesday laundry day ritual. Put in laundry have a drink, switch laundry, order food and more drinks. It worked and was great. I love the patio its a great dog and people watching place. I always had the nachos and really enjoy them with yummy guacamole. The Sangria swill margarita is a great twist on margaritas. Rojo was a enjoyable experience from the moment we walked through the front door. A causal environment right in the heart of Birmingham makes for an experience that make a tourists feel local. You order at the front and the food comes out quickly. They have an expansive tex-mex menu, as well as a classic American bar menu. Lastly, they have an eclectic beer selection. We were visiting from out of town and loved our meal at Rojo. You order inside and then seat yourself, we sat on the patio and it was amazing! Very laid back, no frills vibe in a hip part of town. Truly, one of, if not the best, Mexican restaurants I've been to in Birmingham. Don't let the small size fool you, it only adds to the charm and appeal. You have your choice of ordering from a Latino or American menu, but honestly, I've never order anything other than food from the Latino side. The Bandito tacos are my favorite dish; amazing flavor and spicy Bandito salsa make for a great combination. I also recommend the steak burrito or fish tacos. Rojo is one of those places that always seems like the best place to go to when meeting folks. Not only is their food good, but it is reasonably priced and the atmosphere is exciting. Their dual Latin/American menu allows you to decide from numerous options and it's easy to go back one day after the next and not get too burnt out on their food. I am a particular fan of the Paella and fish tacos. Also, they arguably have the best guacamole in town which they serve in a very large portion. Another perk for some people is that they are dog friendly on the outside patio with water bowls on standby. If I had to say if there were any downsides to Rojo is that it gets particularly crowded and that they are closed on Monday. read more

Very hip. I like the setup - you pick up a menu at the front, order by the bar and then grab a table. We sat on the patio on a very cold night which was a bit chilly but fun. Tried this place after reading Yelp reviews. It was a small restaurant but very charming and a fun atmosphere. While slightly loud, I was still able to easily have a conversation with my partner. I tried the fish tacos and we also shared a trio of dips with salsa and chips. The food was above average. It was fresh and the flavor combinations superb! I also enjoyed a margarita which was made fresh and tasted awesome! I will definitely be returning to this place and trying some of their other options on the menu. Our server was kind enough to point out several "favorites" on the menu, including the fried fish tacos. Looking forward to a burrito next visit. read more

All in all a good experience and I'll definitely be back. I came on a Tuesday night at around 6:30 and it was PACKED. We were lucky to find a table for six. I'm not sure if it is always like that or if it's just because restaurant week is drawing people out -I'll be honest, that's why I came even though I didn't end up ordering off the restaurant week menu. I split the trio sampler with a friend and the pineapple salsa was so yummy. We also ordered the guac and black bean salsa, but they got the order wrong and we got queso instead of salsa. In any case the queso was delicious and it was like eating mac and cheese on a chip. For my main course I tried to mix things up with a little bit of Mexican and the South by getting the BBQ pork tacos. Those were so delicious, but the taste of the corn tortilla and BBQ sauce was a little strange at first. My two complaints: One is that I thought the chips were a little overpriced - $9 for a basket of plain ol' tortilla chips and three little cups of dip. Two it was quite noisy inside and it was hard to carry a conversation. read more

So I have tried to eat here a couple of times in the past and was never able to find seating so I'd give up and go somewhere else. But I was finally able to try this much talked about spot during BRW. Their BRW brunch menu wasn't any different than their regular menu. I chose the bacon burrito which was massive especially for the price. I was actually surprised that the bacon stayed crispy even mixed in with all the other mushy ingredients of the burrito. My guest had the brunch sandwich and was also shocked at the size. Both dishes were well seasoned and balanced with textures and flavors (I don't know why I haven't been eating jalapeño bacon all my life). I see why Rojo is so popular if their lunch and dinner menus are as good as their brunch. My biggest complaint is, of course, the seating since it has prevented me from trying this restaurant on more than one occasion. But, if you are willing to stalk a table, this is a great fresh find with such filling prices. read more

The food is great! I appreciate the diverse and vast menu, but the two different cocktails I tried were not well done. And, honestly, I'm not too comfortable with all of the dogs everywhere. Been a minute since I've given Rojo some love. Always something different to try on the menu, because it's all good. The burger recently surprised me. VERY good, big and juicy and awesome flavor. And the Ghost Buffalo chicken sandwich. WHOA. Fried chicken breast tossed in Buffalo sauce, ghost pepperjack cheese, jalepeno bacon, and habenero hot sauce. Taste was incredible, not TOO spicy because I got the hot sauce on the side and only applied a thin layer. Warning: my gut was burning later in the day. worth it! Oh, and tots as a side item option? We drive 40mins to come here to eat. Their bacon cheeseburger with guacamole is the best!! Love that we bring our dog and all the waiters are super friendly and always bring her water and snacks. As I am sure most people will tell you, Rojo is a really great neighborhood restaurant. The inside is generally fairly loud and crowded, so we always opt to sit on the awesome patio, which overlooks the park across the street. Everything that I have ordered here is delicious. The only thing that keeps me giving the place five stars is the ordering process. You order at the counter and get a number for your table. This becomes a problem if you are having a few drinks...because you have to wait in line at the bar again every time that you want something else (which, when it is crowded, can be a long process.) For this reason, we usually just have one drink and move elsewhere afterward. I also found that their pitchers of margaritas, while quite tasty, are also more expensive than most anywhere else I have been. Overall though, this is a very cool spot. read more

As far as getting food, you walk up to the back counter to order your food then take a number and find a seat or stand in line at the adjacent bar.
