"Best Mediterranean in Berkeley"? They might be found up there! Rojbas Grill is a Mediterranean joint located on University Avenue. A friend and I wanted to check for nearby food areas from the UC Berkeley campus and we discovered this place after some deliberation. We enjoy what Mediterranean has to offer, so we were excited about checking it out. We arrived at 11:05AM (5 minutes after opening). I got myself the Falafel Plate ($12.95) and my friend got himself the Lamb Beef Wrap ($10.50). We got our order in 10 minutes. The Falafel Plate presents itself with 4 falafel pieces, 4 pita bread, tzatziki, yellow hummus, tabbouleh, and beets. Overall, I find the quality of ingredients to be very remarkable. The tabbouleh has the right amount of acidity and zip, especially with lemon juice sprinkled. The hummus is runnier than what I'm used to, but it still has that signature chickpea taste with tumeric notes and sumac seasoning. The tzatziki is creamy and works nicely with the pita bread and the falafels. The beets were cooked well and sweet to the taste. My only gripe is found in the falafels. They could use more salt and spices since they were getting overpowered by the other side items. Still, they gave off a nice steam when you first bite into it and they were cooked to perfection. My friend is not one to comment on his eating experience all too much, but he thought his lamb and beef wraps were good. The portions for him were standard, and the meat had great taste and texture. Phenomenal service. One of the workers was very open to talk about the food they serve there, and even gave us complimentary tea, brewed and steeped in-house. I am not sure if the tea is something every sit-down customer will receive, but I will say it is some of the best brewed black tea I have ever tried and that if you are fortunate enough to receive it, you will see what I mean. Rojbas Grill made my friend's Berkeley morning all the nicer as it made my morning nicer. I will be honest my boyfriend and I love this place, the food is delicious and extra and the family that own it always have such a friendly, jovial vibe. The atmosphere is an average little joint, but we always have such a good experience and the food so scrumptious we've returned often! The Mezze Plate comes with a thick yogurt sauce, and cooked beets, the humus is extra creamy (I don't known what they add that is different, but it's extra). And round that out with Babaganoush, Dolmas, and a new one for me Ezme a spicy Turkish spread recipe with tomatoes, spicy green peppers, and red pepper paste, then falafel, and pita. We usually get that and a Shish Kabab, chicken or salmon, and share. The latter comes with a green salad and fluffy, seasoned rice. So we get everything with the two dishes. Gyros platter was exceptionally good. The rice pilaf was better than average (but didn't seem to have those little noodles that most pilaf has). I love that the gyros was sliced thinner and that increased the flavor. The tzatziki (did I spell that right?) was much better than most (less cucumber-y). We ordered fries and hummus and the fries were double-fried and done very well. Tasty and crispy with soft insides. Hummus was smooth and creamy but thick enough to really dig your pita into it. Salad was okay. Kind of wish it had a different dressing (a little blah) but grateful for salad! SERVICE: I love that it is done fresh. A small wait but worth it. Packaging in biodegradable containers would be better. Service at the restaurant (all take out during COVID-19) was nice and helpful. And the menu has stuff I really want to try. Yum. Recently eaten at Ronna's Grill! I got the Alexander Plate, and we also sampled some of the Kunefe. The alexander plate was decent, though the sauce seemed like a typical marinara sauce rather than the tomato paste based sauce i'm used to. Typical from a place like this i got a gyro along with some fries and wanted to try one of their dipping sauces. Everything was pretty decent but i did want some more sumac on the fries for more flavor and their hot sauce wasn't actually hot, it was sweet. Got a takeout lunch here for work. The waitstaff was SO NICE. Even though my coworker and I ordered takeout, they brought us glass cups with hot tea to drink while we were waiting for our orders. That was incredibly sweet of them. It's a small, cozy space, and I would have liked to have a sit down meal here sometime. I'm a sucker for baklava, and they offer 2 pieces for $3.95. Not bad! Since I really enjoy baklava, my coworker recommended that I get spanakopita. It's like baklava, but instead of a sweet dessert, it's savory, with spinach it in. This was a great recommendation. A savory baklava for lunch, and a sweet baklava for dessert? I'm down! My coworker got a chicken lunch special. She also requested hot sauce, which the staff kindly put on the side for her. The gyro wraps are more like burritos than gyros because of the lavash. They would have been better on a pita. The beef and lamb was flavorful but needed a little more seasoning. There's a few tables only for approximately less than 10 people to sit at. Mediterranean cuisine is served here from wraps, starters, dips, salads, and plates. Order at the front and the cashier will bring you the food to your table. Lamb and beef gyro wrap here was quite filling but lacked a lot of ingredients. Felt super plain. I think what else was wrong is that it was made with lavash bread. Wasn't a fan of it at all. The Spanakopita which is a spinach pie with layers of buttered filo pastry filled with spinach, onion, feta and fresh herbs was super good. I preferred that side over the wrap itself. Fast service. Covid procedures were good, there was sanitizer by the entrance and a plexiglass shield protecting the cashier. The wraps were good, it was super long and filled with veggies. This place saved us! What a great spot with an amazing staff! SETTING: Came to visit Berkeley and we were told about this place. Right on a main intersection and very easy to access. Inside is pretty clean and well put together. Place can fit around 30 people max inside, but it seems most people order food to go. SERVICE: Amazing. These guys served our party of 16 people in no time. I called ahead and told them that we are coming to eat there and they had no problem accommodating us. The chef seems to be the owner, he was very welcoming and made sure we had a great time there. He even came out and gave all of us tea on the house. Great service for such short number of staff. FOOD: We ordered 3 family deals here. The food was enough to feed all of us. The family meal came with salad and a large platter of a mix of meats. The gyro and steak were my favorite.
