Eljanor, the esthetician here, is a highly skilled and creative person. I have come to her for different treatments and I am more impressed by her talents the more I come. She is great for skincare, amazing for eyebrows and lashes and overall, a great, great esthetician. I am actually shocked at how good I look after one of her treatments as well as how long it lasts. She is also a lot of fun. Michael, the owner, treats me with such respect and always makes me feel as though I am the most important client he has. The front desk staff has always shown me a great deal of hospitality and has done everything to accommodate my needs. For curls, come here. For color, come here. For cappuccino, come here. Basically everything I need to be happy except bacon. It's a cute little multi-level salon with nice ambiance. You definitely feel pampered and well taken care of. Black robes, espresso, more brand new magazines than a Vogue factory and a great team of stylists and assistants. Prices are Newbury - can't be too surprised. Full foil/glaze/cut/blow dry was $180 last time (although it was $155 the previous time so their prices must have gone up) plus tip. Dayna has been working magic on my hair since February, so around 6 months. She's a complete whiz at cutting curly hair to complement the curl and leave the correct length. You know when your stylist holds out how much they're going to cut off, and then they just chop off how much they want anyway? Not Dayna. If she says a half inch trim, she means it. My curls look great at any stage of the grow-out phase. Regarding color, I've always gotten a full foil and she is positively meticulous. To the point where I swear she's put in foils around my face that only have 10 hairs in them. She's taken it blonder towards the summer and now that summer is over, darker towards the fall. It's so well suited and blended so naturally that I've gotten relentless compliments ever since I started going to her. The best part is that with the most recent way she applied my color, I don't need to go back for 12 weeks. Came here with a GuiltCity for an ombré,cut, and blowdry. Service: my hairdresser was very nice. She took me on time and offered me coffee and water. She was friendly and seemed to be listening to what I wanted. I will say that the front desk staff was very rude and stuck up. I checked in and the entire time I was doing it the girls back was to me. She gestured to things but didn't move to help me out. Overall extremely rude. Color: I wasn't sure if I wanted an ombré but the hairdresser convinced me to go with it. I told her specifically that I wanted it to be I'm blocks of color and to blend them. I wanted to go a bit darker as well. I am giving this place one star because the hair that came out 3.5 hours later was literally the exact opposite. I now have highlights which are almost grey, and my hair us extremely dark. I specifically said I didn't want highlights. Might be one if the worst ombres I have had yet. The hairdresser must have just been agreeing with me because my hair literally is the exact opposite of what I wanted. I will say the cut and blow dry were great, but nothing could make up fir that color. read more

Of particular note is Tommy, whose talent is so extraordinary that I literally have had a total strangers ask me where I got my hair cut and colored. Tommy's ability to use color and then sculpt the haircut to enhance highlights is amazing. I have seen clients with all types of hair and color leave his chair with gorgeous styles -- gray, brunette, blond, curly alike. There are quite a few steps to get up to the salon, so those with mobility issues should call ahead to ask for assistance. That said, my 83-year-old mother with arthritis still gets herself up there! Curly-headed people of Boston: I've finally found a place that knows what to do with curls. I have been searching forever for a salon that was able to tame my unruly locks without making my hair look like some sort of fro, or without giving me dreadlocks. I tend to wear my hair up, because I hate how it looks down, but also because I've had bad haircuts forever, and it always ends up looking worse than it has before. I decided to invest in a Ouidad cut at Michael Roffi because it was reasonably priced (compared to the cuts in NYC) and because I had previously been disappointed by a curly haircut locally. The staff at the salon here was incredibly warm and welcoming and everyone tried to really make me feel like I was in a "home" sort of environment. Catherine did an unbelievable job on my hair and a day later, without having washed it yet, it still looks as great as it did yesterday. I have never had a curly style last that long before. I can't say enough wonderful things about my experience at this salon and my satisfaction with the style. She debulked my hair and made it look great. I could not be any more pleased. I went here two days ago (Saturday) for a facial using a Groupon. My number one priority when I get a facial is the extraction; unfortunately, the extraction process here was underwhelming. If you look for the same thing in facials as I do, then read on. If you prefer massage and hydration facials, then this place would be fine. I had Justine, who is a really sweet gal and was easy to talk to about my skin. I was a little worried since the tiny room they have for facials is right off of the salon area upstairs, but it was actually pretty quiet, especially when she put on the music inside the room. Not a super-spa experience, but it was good enough and pretty relaxing. I asked her a few times to make sure that I was going to get a good extraction since I have some serious congestion on my chin and she assured me that I would. Unfortunately, she only did about 10 mins of extraction after a relatively brief steam, which I knew was not going to be enough. She said she couldn't do anymore without damaging my skin, as the effects of the steam had worn off. I've never heard this reason before and I've had a lot of facials and different places. So perhaps she's right but sadly I left with a few blotchy red spots and lots of unopened pores. I don't mind having blotchy skin after facials but my biggest pet peeve is still having congestion after a facial. The regular price for a facial here is $95 for 1.5 hr and I paid $50 for my Groupon, which was supposed to cover the 1.5 hr facial. At best, this facial was 1 hr and 10 mins. I felt a little shortchanged. Anyway, Justine is a lovely gal but I unfortunately won't be going back here since I really want a good extraction when I get facials. :-( Perhaps she could have used more steam and done a second round of extraction. One star for Justine being so nice and friendly. One star for being a decent atmosphere. read more

I went to Roffi in March to use my facial Groupon and was happy with the experience. Unfortunately I can't remember my aesthetician's name, but she did a good job. Extraction was much less painful than I've experienced during other facials, and my skin looked great right after. I went with a girlfriend who had a similarly good experience. I was a little disappointed with the massage portion that you usually get gratis with a facial, a bit lacking here but oh well. After my facial, I got a first-time customer coupon for a free haircut with J. Now, I have had a life-long battle with stylists not understanding how to deal with my long, thick, curly hair. Stylists are always intimidated are not able to provide me with options because they don't know what to do with me. I was given hope by Roffi's wall of Ouidad products, and when I called to make an appointment, I was told that J and many of the other stylists are experts in dealing with curly hair. We'll see about that, I thought. I was pleasantly surprised by my experience with J. We agreed to take off some length and razor out some bulk (terrifying), which came out great. The best part, though, was, J 'rake-and-shake'd my hair afterwards! :) Usually I walk out of a salon with wet hair because I don't blow-dry it (I wear it curly all the time). But J suggested we try Ouidad's rake-and-shake method, and then she dried and diffused me. It came out great, and I was able to (almost) re-create the look at home with her instruction. I'm not a regular here, but they offered employees at my company a special discount for the month, so I went. The staff from front desk to the hairdresser's chair were friendly and accommodating. I'm terrible at describing what kind of haircut I need so I usually just say "do whatever you think will look good." I purchased a Gilt City deal that was for a haircut, full foil color/Ombré & blow-out. Roffi Salon is located upstairs, in between retail stores. The location is very clean and classic with white/black furniture and seats. I came in with brown/red dyed hair growing out and showing my black roots. I wanted an ombre highlight with really blonde highlights. Dayna was my hair stylist, and she did such a great job! She offered me cappuccino or tea after I first had my hair washed. She put a glaze on the top portion of my hair to have a cohesive black color to start the ombre. She then did ombre highlights with foil and only set in the dye for about 20-30 minutes. She cut my hair after, and layered the cut to frame my face. She really didn't cut more than I asked her to, which I really appreciated. Overall, she made my hair look very natural. Even though I wanted my hair a lot lighter, she made a good call to make the color blend in better with my natural dark-brown/black hair. read more

Fortunately, Roffi Salon has some fantastic options! I started seeing Catherine in the winter and she did a phenomenal job and never judges when I have waited way too long for a haircut. I had a GREAT cut/color with Siena. I came in with a very vague description of what I wanted, yet somehow she figured it out! She gave me a beautiful subtle balayage and brought my curly hair back to life with some shape! She also gave me a killer blowout. Most of all, I loved how thorough she was with her work. She reglazed my hair when it wasn't quite the color she wanted and cut into my bangs to make them really blend after it was dried. How do I not love thee? Let me count the ways . . . 1. Loud and cramped. 2. Baaaad lighting. Some sections of the salon had bright fluorescent lights, while others were eerily dim. 3. Uncomfortable chairs with crazy-low backs. I would have been more comfortable on a stool. 4. Expensive. My haircut was $65. My hairstyle just isn't that fancy. And if I'm not enjoying the experience (like I did at Oasis), well then, what am I paying for? 5. A see and be seen kind of scene. No thank you! And now, how I do love thee. However, there are much fewer ways to count here: 1. Rita, my hairstylist since 1996 recently moved here when Oasis closed. 2. Good selection of hair products that didn't seem to be overly marked up. 3. Cucumber slices in the water (but what's up with the plastic dixie cups?!) Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good, and I won't be going back anytime soon. Plus, I was really (really!) ticked that when they moved my appointment over to the new salon from the old salon, they charged me the new price without telling me. I recently purchased a living social deal for a cut, ombre, and blow dry and so glad I did. I was greeted by Joy, the receptionist. What a sweetheart! She immediately introduced me to Dayna, my stylist. Overall, she did a wonderful job. She cut off exactly what I wanted. No more. No less. As for the color, I wanted a medium to light brown ombre and she did just that! My hair is thicker than most and it often takes other stylists about three hours. I was in and out in 2 hours. Rune's hair-cuttery of choice, I wrestled with whether or not to award that fifth star. The price (to be expected from a Newbury Street salon, I realize) is pretty substantial. If I hadn't followed my main man Donald from his last shop (Nelson-Randall cum BE Salon in Brookline), there's a very good chance I would never have considered this joint. Of course, the rating is based almost entirely upon the scissor-maestro. Donald snips away, seemingly without effort, and banters brilliantly. I swear, I'm in that chair for some thirty minutes (his attention to detail is unparalleled) and it just zooms on by. I can't speak highly enough about his work. Moving on, the decor is, well, interesting. There's a bit too much white for my liking. The wrought iron accents are nice and the bear rug (faux, I presume) in the seating area makes me smile, for some childish reason. The artwork rotates and the style can vary radically. Sometimes I dig it. Sometimes I don't. That's the nature of the beast, I suppose. Someone has to do something about the music. The sound system seems above-average but the selection (while never the same) is dreadful. It seems that some of the reviewers were discomforted (at least initially) by the prevailing femininity in the air. Get with the times, children, or find an old Italian barber with a shaky hand and naughty postcards from the old country on the wall. Beyond Donald, the rest of the staff (those I've interacted with, at least) is also top-notch. The salon owner, Michael, is a visible and gracious gentleman. Linda is a centering force behind the reception desk and her cohort, Susan, is lovely and competent. Bonus points for the stairs. They're the only access point and, effectively, a moat to thwart the elderly and the invalid. read more

I used a gilt city voucher at Roffi Salon last week. In two years, I haven't found a salon in Boston I would say I'm particularly loyal to, but that may have changed. The only negative thing I could say is I called the day before to come in a half hour earlier and the receptionist said it was fine, but when I got there I had to wait a half hour. I would have rather her just say no and I wouldn't have left work early. Everything else was great. It seemed like most people in the salon were regulars, which is always a good sign. An assistant, Bobby, washed my hair and did the glaze and she was sweet as could be. The glaze by the way was really nice. A week later my hair is still much shinier and softer than usual. Brenda cut my hair and she did a great job. You can tell she really likes what she does and cares about your opinion. It's probably the first time I left a salon without feeling horrified about how much hair they cut off. It was also one of the best blow outs I ever had. I didn't wash my hair for 3 days and it still looked amazing. Even without the giltcity discount, I will likely be back! read more

This salon is amazing! Right when I walked in I was greeted by a friendly man who offered me a cappuccino and amazing homemade Italian cookies that the owner made. The atmosphere was fun and the decor was artsy and modern. Ask for Dayna! She is an amazing hair stylist. She was great to talk to and also did a full foil for me. I can honestly say it was the best color I have ever had. Plus she is just really sweet all around, she even helped me with my scalp which is super sensitive and gave me free samples of the shampoo and conditioner she recommends. I got a haircut free because I was a hair model to Kim N. Kim was one of the students that Michael Roffi took under his wing. Both Kim and Michael were awesome to work with and they cut my hair to what I wanted...lots of layers for my wavy Asian hair. =) Love it! It took some time but I didn't mind sitting in such a posh salon. The staff were not pretentious one bit. Best hair cut I ever had and it was with Sienna. The Glaze was amazing too! I opted to add a warmer tone to my brighter highlights. She is an amazing stylist, very reasonable price and the positive attitude from everyone was a breath of fresh air. I loved Michael's personal touch and getting to know each client. That's how you build and maintain a business (I hope the younger generation is reading this!!) After going through multiple deals to get my hair done on Newbury, I finally found a salon that I will continually go to. Initially I found them through a deal with Kacy for balayage, a hair cut, and a glaze. My last balayage was awful so I was a little hesitant, but I've been to Kacy twice for one now and I have loved my hair both times! Personally, I like to keep my hair fairly low maintenance and go longer than I probably should before a hair cut or color. Kacy is understanding of that and has always done my hair for me in a way so that it will be low maintenance. She checks in about the length while she is cutting off hair and cleans up the cut after she dries it, really showing that the minor details are important to her. Most recently I saw her after an unfortunate incident where I got bit by a dog on my face the day before. I debated canceling the appointment (I had multiple stitches and swelling... not a pretty sight), but I am so happy I didn't. She was so accommodating and sweet about the incident, and did a great job!! I couldn't recommend her more! Aside from that, the salon itself is clean and offers coffee beverages, water, magazines, etc during your visit. The other staff have also been nothing but friendly. read more

I had a marvelous facial with Justine, who I found through Groupon. She was delightful and the facial was really extensive. I've used Groupons at other places in the past and I felt that the spas shortchanged me, but Justine actually did more than I would have expected. There were quite a few steps, including peels, steaming, extracting, moisturizing, masks, etc. She gave me lots of samples to use and wrote down a step-by-step plan for me. She also gave a killer neck massage while my mask was on. The front desk staff was really friendly... very unNewbury! Ha. The one thing that kept this from getting 5 stars is that Justine got some of the facial products in my hair around my hairline. It was my birthday and I was going out later that night, so I'd washed and done my hair earlier. That little cotton headband that they put on you got loose and fell off, and she got the moisturizer and mask in my hair. I was bummed because I had to rewash it. D'oh! Everything else was great. Everyone in the salon is very welcoming and always offers me a cappuccino or tea while I wait. The decor in the salon is very chic and relaxing at the same time, which provides a heightened experience, without coming off as pretentious or uppity. J is an incredibly talented stylist and always delivers! She is insanely friendly and will give you the best cut of your life! We always have the best conversations and I leave feeling stylish and ready to hit the city streets. I had a Groupon for Roffi's spa for a facial. I was a litle late in redeeming it and called only a few weeks before the expiration. When I called, the woman was very friendly and explained that a lot of people were redeeming their Groupons now and they were filling up; however, they were going to honor the certificate for after the expiration date for a little whie, which I thought was very professional since they had already been paid for it, and we all lose track of which Groupons we've bought at one time or another. Anyway...went for my facial, and I really enjoyed it. While I was waiting to be seen, I noticed everyone who came out that was staff was very professional, and everyone who came out that was a patron was pleased. Interesting. I think I'm going to try a haircut next. It's a cute place. I think the facial may have been slightly overpriced at the regular price, but not out of line for the city. Amazing! I got my hair cut and colored last week and literally have been told by a countless number of random people how good my hair looks. Someone even stopped me on the street to complement me on it and this is no easy feat as I have a ton of really thick, curly hair. This is my second time at Roffi using Gilt City and I have to say I'm pretty hooked. I already booked my next appointment (even without a gilt city voucher...crazy)! Dayna was my hair stylist and she was so great. My color is even better than what I had hoped for. It is so rich and warm and adds so much dimension to my hair. Okay so you get it, I'm really happy with my hair, but on top of that, the customer service was great. I couldn't ask for anything better in terms of booking, reception and helpfulness but also originally the color around my scalp was a bit too light and Dayna tried two different techniques to ensure the area was darkened, but not totally stripped of color. And after she had stayed an hour and a half past closing to ensure it was okay, she gave me a free blow dry since I didn't have time to stay then. When I came back that weekend for the blowdry, she fixed the area a bit more (I was already happy but she was like this will make it perfect! which she was right about) and then blew it out. I went to Maria yesterday for the first time on a referral, and let me just say everything was top notch. I walked in and was offered water/coffee/tea from reception which was great. Staff was smiling and not intimidating like other salons can be (that feeling you get when you're new and they know it, and make you feel it too -- they don't do that here). The salon was super clean and trendy as expected, and products were organized as they should be. I actually felt as if I wasn't new there, which is exactly what I had been looking for in a new salon. Plus, they carry my favorite product, so Roffi basically had me at Pureology. Maria is so sweet. Rather than sitting there in awkward silence while your new stylist cuts your hair - she was nice and asked about me, and made good conversation. It didn't feel like an appointment, it was more socializing which is exactly how I picture a cut/blow should be. I do not color my hair, and for that reason I've been to dozens of stylists to find the perfect cut.I always find something I don't like since I'm super picky. BUT Maria is AWESOME at cutting, and delivered everything I asked for. My hair honestly looks exactly like the picture I showed her, and exactly how I described what I wanted. I did my hair myself this morning (we all know it never looks like it does when you walk out) and it still looks perfect; exactly what I wanted. I will for sure be coming back here, and am so happy I finally found my new stylist. And on top of everything, the prices aren't outrageous - especially for Newbury Street. She went down to business, super detail oriented, and left me with the most natural looking, non brassy and long lasting highlights, closest to the root of my hair that I've ever seen! Other stylists tend to leave some of my dark root there, I guess to make me come back sooner :P but she made sure that I could go as long as possible without touchups. My cut was also layered amazingly, and the blow dry was smooth and bouncy. I would definitely come back again, she asked all kinds of questions to get my look just right. $160 for all of those services together (the full value posted on Living Social) doesn't seem too shabby to get my money's worth. I came to this salon after seeing a craigslist posting for discounted color services from a stylist looking to increase her clientele. Keep in mind this wasn't for a color model, which is usually free or a minimal payment like$20. I told the stylist I wanted a creative color ombre and showed her hair photos of pale lavender and silver ombres. Now I have dark Asian hair, which I am fully aware is difficult to lift. She lifted my hair as much as she could, and said I'd have to come back for a second visit. This visit was 4 hours long and cost $110. On the second visit, she repeated the process, and decided that my hair had lifted sufficiently to deposit the color I wanted. I couldn't see my hair during this process and trusted that she knew what she was doing. A couple other ladies working at the salon even said "wow it looks pretty", and "good job". When I finally got to see my hair my stomach sank- it was very very dark, pretty much black. I told the stylist that it looked so dark, and she said that "they" had decided it would be better and she couldn't articulate why. The fee was $120. When my husband saw me after the appointment he said "I thought you went to color your hair". He said I hadn't done a thing base on looking at my hair, and I felt so sad and awful. I took a photo the day after and showed it to several people to get their opinion, and to see if they could tell I had spent $230 getting a light purple ombre (I've posted the photo of my hair the day after the 2nd appointment). So I was charged $230, gave up 8 hours of my time, and essentially had no color done to my hair. I called the salon saying I wasn't happy because I couldn't stop thinking about how badly this all went, and they insisted I come in for a consultation. I have no confidence that they can remedy the situation, especially considering they all think they did such a good job. I wish that at my second visit, they could've just admit that the color didn't work out and they could either offer a complimentary visit or refund me my money. After a big scheduling error by another salon, I was left, at the last minute, without a stylist that I felt comfortable styling my curly hair on my wedding day. Roffi Salon and J to the rescue! I had a Google offer for a scalp treatment, gloss application, cut & blow dry. My experience with Roffi was PHENOMENAL! First, they are SO pleasant when you call to make an appointment. I had to reschedule a couple of times, and they were always so nice on the phone. And super accommodating - they were able to squeeze me in the next day. Sometimes that can be a bad sign (shouldn't they be busy if they're really good?), but not here. I arrived about 10 mins early for my appointment, but rather than having to wait half hour like most other places in the area, they were able to take me right away. Maria did my hair. She is such a sweetheart and did a FABULOUS job. My hair felt so soft and looked great afterwards. And she really listened to what I wanted, as opposed to just doing whatever she felt like, like many other hairdressers. I didn't want her to cut off too much, and she was sensitive to that. I was also wayyyyy overdue for a cut and was expected to get lectured on my split ends, but she spared me the lecture, which I really appreciate. No one likes to get lectured, especially when they're paying for a service! She took her time with my hair and did a really thorough job. This is a GEM. Not the usualy hoity toity of Newbury St. And reasonable prices (even without a Groupon-type deal). I'll definitely be back! read more

I have been going to the Michael Roffi Salon for about two and a half years now. I love this salon. The whole staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and they really aim to take great care of your hair. I have had my hair cut, colored, and bleached here. My stylist is J Despres and she is AMAZING. I have long, curly hair, and she knows exactly how to take care of it. She is great about recommending products but not trying to hawk them on me, and I always leave looking great. My favorite part about J is that while she styles my hair extraordinarily well, she is always good about showing me exactly what she did, making it easy for me to replicate the styles at home. My hair has never been healthier, and I definitely owe it all to J. Honestly, this salon is pricey (some of the stylists charge up to $100/cut--J is only $40 though!) but for the way my hair looks and feels after a visit to the Michael Roffi Salon, I'd gladly pay them all double. read more
