After I Googled top-rated nail salons, I found PJ's Nail and journeyed down the Charles River from Cambridge to the Back Bay neighborhood. I had such a great experience at PJ's Nails on Gloucester Street - thanks to the lovely Anna! She took care of my gel manicure and spa pedicure, and I honestly can't say enough good things about her. She's warm, welcoming, and has this infectious energy that instantly puts you at ease. You can tell she genuinely enjoys what she does, and it shows in the quality of her work. My nails came out beautifully, super clean, polished, and exactly how I wanted them. The spa pedicure was relaxing from start to finish, and Anna paid close attention to every detail without rushing. It felt like a real treat. The salon itself is clean, cozy, and inviting. Prices are totally in line with the area, and honestly, for the level of care and service you get, it feels more than fair. I walked in on a Thursday evening for a manicure and was pleasantly surprised. It's a basement business, so you walk down the stairs into the salon. I literally NEVER review anything, but I couldn't recommend this salon enough. I called after not seeing any availability on their website for a same-day appointment, and they were able to fit me in for a hard gel nail fill in the same afternoon! I usually get stressed out in traditional nail salon environments, so I was a little nervous, but the entire vibe of the place felt very pleasant and chill, especially for being a weekend. Kate did my nails and was definitely one of the friendliest nail techs I've ever had (Honestly, everyone in there seemed super friendly/welcoming!). The fill she did for my hard gel nails looks INCREDIBLE, and I'm still in awe because the shape and thickness of my nails have never looked this good before with hard gel. The building itself isn't anything special. It's a pretty older looking, small little salon on Newbury street. It's unpretentious, and it's not trying to be anything flashy, which I like. They offer a lot of nail services (polygel, Gel-X, liquid gel, acrylic, etc), and do them well. Again, I could not be happier with my nails, so the decor is less important to me. I felt that price was also pretty standard -- $85 for the fill & cat eye effect. She was done in about an hour and a half, which is much faster than I'm used to for this kind of manicure. I've been here a few times but unfortunately I won't be returning. I got a full set Monday 3/24 and a pedicure today Thursday 3/27, and each time they made me bleed and have red irritated skin prone to infection. What made me write this review was mainly the pedicure I got (even though my cuticles on my thumbs keep bleeding periodically throughout the week). My big toe burns and has a genuine open wound that hurts to touch anything including my sock. I'm going on vacation where I'll be in sand and walking so this really sucks. They did give me a $17 discount (107 to $90) but had I known this would've been the outcome I never would've came. Really upset and disappointed that this is going to affect me for the next week. The lady who did my pedicure at first was saying it was "Because my nail was short and she needed to make it straight" and wouldn't apologize but she ended up apologizing when she realized I wasn't going to let it go. I get that I had a short big toe nail to begin with, but I would hope that they'd use their best discretion and not cut it shorter just for appearances to make it straight and leave me in pain with an open wound. My third toe is also irritated but it doesn't hurt like the big toe does. Very upset. Update: the manager did in fact call me back and give me a full refund which was incredibly generous of her and helps with the feeling of frustration read more

Came in for a regular pedicure and a new girl was training. She did a very average job on taking the dead skin off my feet. Usually when I go to other places my feet are so smooth. Here, not so much, she missed some spots. I also wasn't a huge fan of the way she cut and cleaned (hurt a little). Other than that, the pedicure was fine in terms of polish & coats. I decided to come here since my regular nail tech moved. Firstly, I booked a removal of my gel x (another tech's work) and a structure gel manicure. I was serviced by Ken and when I tell you this man was not gentle at all. He began filing off my gel color but none of his tools looked like they have been cleaned and sanitized. He had old sand bands in an Altoids container. He did not soak my gelx extensions off properly by soaking in acetone and scraping off with a tool but rather filed my nails completely down causing major damage to my once strong nails. When he started to file my natural nails I asked if he could use a cleaner sand band because the ones in his tin were all used and white but refused and told me that it was clean and I didn't know anything. Then he pulled out acrylic powder to do my nails but that is not what I wanted so I told him again that I wanted and that I booked liquid gel (structured gel) which they offer. After going back and forth he told me that we can do poly gel. Again, this is not what I asked for and I was very firm in what I wanted. Another lady came to me and told me that we can do poly gel and that it's basically the same thing. They are not the same thing but similar and in the same family but not the same system/ method. Ken then told me that I would have to be serviced by another lady because he did not know how to do liquid gel. 10 years in business but workers don't know how to do services that they offer. I am highly disappointed and now my nails are completely damaged and breaking off as I type this. If I could give them a 0 I would. Beware of this place and their questionable sanitation techniques. I just left and paid for my removal which was $20....$20 for improper removal and irreparable damage to my nail beds. EDIT: Per the owner's rude response, my entire account of what happened was not my "feelings" but what I ACTUALLY saw and experienced. 1) I was fully aware of the price hence why I booked and included the services I wanted( pictured below) 2) I'm fully aware that some may not know how to do a service but if that's the case do not take that client. Being notified of this would of been nice and I would of waited patiently for the next person to service me- that knew how to do what I booked for rather than try to make me get something I did not want and explained over and over again that I did not want what was being pushed on me. 3) Ken in fact used a USED sand band while filing my natural nail. The band was in fact white indicating it was used. Sand bands are one use and disposed of, not kept to be use again in an Altoids container. That is beyond unsanitary. 4) my gel x extension was NOT removed properly. They were soaked for 2 mins and filed off when the removal of gel x extension with gel color goes as follows- file off gel color, soak, and scraped off with a tool (cuticle pusher) to prevent over exposure to filings the nail bed. Also I didn't mention that my pinky nail extension on my right hand was PEELED off with a cuticle clipper that caused me a bit of discomfort. For those that want to book here definitely use caution.... This owner's response should tell you all you need to know about this place. Very disappointing considering the upscale environment it dwells in. read more

Pre-pandemic this was a better run salon. Now it's a hot mess. The appointments are meaningless. You still have to wait a while. I gave them a second chance and they made me wait 15-20 mins after I arrived (I had an appointment) before telling me that they were running behind and it would like be another 20-30 minutes. I left. I tend to go here because it's closest to me but honestly I regret it almost every time. They have no AC which I found out on an 85 degree day. OPI, CND and Essie are "$5 more but last a week longer" and they have about 5 colors that are Morgan Taylor and those are the only ones that aren't $5 more which is absurd. One time I came here and they said I had to wait 15 minutes and it was 45 minutes and it's not even like they were taking people who had appointments before me, everyone must have just sat down for their gel or mani/pedi and like it's fine I just wish they had told me so I could grab a tea or something while I waited. I do like that they seem to take their time with cuticle cuttings and the prep for the pedicures. Don't do the deluxe pedicure unless you have $10 or $15 in your bank account lying around. I expected them to scrub my feet more or something but it's just a scented lotion and something scented in the water that you can't smell anyway. Save yourself the money. As I said, it's not awful enough that I stop coming but it's definitely little things that bother me so if it's not close, I would go somewhere else. read more
