Tucked away on a side street near the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar and the Picasso Museum in the neighborhood of El Born, Bar Rodrigo is a quaint little tapas bar with an extensive menu and a rustic vibe. We stopped in here at around 12:30pm for an early lunch (by Spanish standards) on a Tuesday afternoon. When we arrived, we were the first ones in the restaurant, though the space quickly filled up with both tourists and locals! The interior of the restaurant, with its red-brick and grey-stone walls and wooden furniture, reminds me of a historic old pub in a charming way. The hostess was delightfully outgoing, and more than willing to put up with my high-school-level Spanish (though she spoke a good amount of English as well). She made multiple recommendations, so we started off with a pitcher (you can't just order a cup here) of their Sangria, which is made with Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine. The fine bubbles combined with the tart sweetness made for some of the best Sangria we've had in Spain! We started off with the Berenjena a la Brasa (Grilled Eggplant, €4,50). This came with several thin slices of grilled eggplant that was nicely charred, but tender on the inside. However, we found the dish to be overly seasoned with garlic and salt, and had to scrape most of the seasoning off in order for it to be palatable. Next to come out was the Dorado (€16,50), which was a whole fish that seemed to be lightly pan-fried or roasted. The fish was flaky and tender with a nice crispy exterior, and perfectly-seasoned. The fries on the side were, well, fried to perfection with a nice dust of salt. We also enjoyed the side salad that it was served with - the vegetables were crunchy and fresh, and the dressing was light and acidic! While this wasn't the most generous portion of fish, it was well-cooked, and we enjoyed the fact that it came with fries and a salad as well. Last to come out was the Paella de Marisco (Seafood Paella, €16 for 1 portion) we had seen many rave reviews for this dish online, and the hostess recommended it as well. She was adamant that we'd need two portions for our party of four, but since we weren't that hungry, we just went with one, and thank goodness we did - the portions here are huge, coming out in a sizzling-hot paella pan! We also appreciate that the paella is made to order, and were more than willing to wait the 25 minutes that the menu said. One portion along with the eggplant and the fish fed us just fine. The seafood tasted fresh and neither undercooked nor rubbery, and the rice, while on the soupier side for paella, had the distinctive Spanish saffron flavor that the dish is famous for. We also loved scraping the burnt rice (referred to as socarrat) off the bottom of the pan - it is crunchy and delicious! Overall, we really enjoyed our meal at Bar Rodrigo (except for the overly seasoned eggplant) - the portions were large and tasty, prices were affordable, and service is so friendly. If you're in the neighborhood after seeing one of the many sights in the area, this is a great place to get your tapas/paella fix! read more

Local restaurant with kind staff. The place was small but enough room to move around. Ambience wasn't bad either. Food was deliciously made. Mussels had a lot of sauce leftover and the waiter offered bread for the sauce. (We found out after that there was bread fee.) The fried cuttlefish with lemon hit the spot. Highly recommend that dish. The Black Seafood Paella was fresh and not frozen. Ordered for two people. Girlfriend couldn't finish it because it was a lot! We did encounter two problems. I found a bug on a hanging picture on the wall. The waiter noticed my glance and quickly got rid of it and my gf screamed because she is terrified of bugs. The hit was hard enough that the picture fell on the floor. He apologized, smiled at us and then made a gesture towards the outside indicating the bug came from there. Second, they served us regular seafood paella and the waiter apologized and brought it back to the kitchen. We had to wait a few more minutes. Worth it though. We did overhear the table next to us that the Sangria was not good and the waiter spoke with them to understand what was wrong and offered a solution. There are a lot of much more trendy and certainly more touristy place you can find to eat in Barcelona's Gothic quarter but you will not find better food and service then here at Rodrigo. It will take you a little digging but once you find this hidden gem you will be back. We started with the navajas which are razor clams. Not seen very much in the states but a great treat. Definitely have the fried sardines. We tried both the seafood paella and also the black paella two separate nights. Both were excellent. Of course enjoy some sangria with everything. We stopped here on a whim because we were starving! We ordered the lamb chops and fried baby squid to share. The lamb chops were pretty good! The meal came on a platter and it was enough for both of us to share. The squid were average. Some of them were a bit sandy. I would stop here for a quick bite but I wouldn't plan on visiting for dinner. Plenty of other nicer & tastier places in Barcelona! read more

My wife and I came here for dinner for our first Spanish dinner. We finished our Gothic quarters tour and felt we should be eating paella. I wanted the squid ink but my wife wanted the seafood. We shared the peppers, fried cubed potatoes, fried anchovies, house salad, fish crochets and I had a glass of wine. Everything was well done. I would have been happy to pay a little extra for better quality seafood. The shrimps were tiny and they were not peeled like many of the paella served in Spain. OH HELLO there paella negro!!!! My cousin took us here and asked me if remembered this place when I was in my honeymoon. It looked familiar but gosh darn-it I didn't. But who cares it had what I love and not for a arm and a leg price. They even had lunch specials for us. I love how BCN has set menus and it's like GREAT set menus. Not like whack entree and dessert. Barcelona has like salad, entree, dessert and cafe. OH I miss BCN. OK now about the food. I ordered the negro paella (not microwave or easy make paella) , peppers and spicy potatoes bravas. I will say the food I ordered were all great and would get it over and over and over again! My daughter wanted spaghetti so we got her the seafood red sauce spaghetti it was delish!! My cousin in law ordered soup and his 2nd entree was fries and meat potato balls (kinda like Porto's meat potato balls). My cousin ordered the breaded chicken and fries (2nd entree). So good! What an amazing find! The White Sangria is one of the best I've ever had and the food was amazing across the board! Not the best food option in the area. Although the mixed paella we ordered was pretty good, the service was terrible. There were two servers only in the whole restaurant. The one we had was pressuring us to order more food and wasn't very helpful. The menu items aren't that great and the tapas are expensive for what it was. After being pressured we decided to order the razor clams tapa and they did not clean it well. There was still sand in it. Aside from the location food is mediocre and the service is bad. Will not recommend coming here. If you walk a few streets down by Picasso museum or to the beach area there are much better options! read more

Worst paella mariscos I have ever had that came with small shrimp that weren't pealed. To top off the bad paella, I found a metal string in my paella...and all he said was "sorry". The salmon dish I ordered came with a salad and they brought out French fries. Instead of just bringing me a side dish of salad, he took away my plate. Took off the French fries and put salad on it. I even told them no dressing on the salad and they put dressing on the salad. The cheese pizza was burnt.. Papa johns pizza was better than this. The beef estofado came out cold. HORRIBLE! 10€ for rice, tomato paste, and frozen vegetables. It was our last day in Barcelona and we wanted to have paella one last time. But, we felt so disappointed. We asked for tap water and they refused. When they ran my credit card they charged it in US Dollars instead of asking local currency or US Dollars. Every other restaurant asks first. (It is best practice to charge in local currency as you will get a much better rate from your bank in the conversion.) This may have been 4 stars a few years ago, but it's less than 1 star. Service is horrible. There are far better places to eat in this neighborhood. Stay away!! read more

I did not want to spend an arm and a leg for paella, so we chose this little local establishment that has indoor and outdoor seating. The staff are nice and they serve several different types of paella, We settled on a seafood paella and order of fried calamari both were delicious but not enough so I ordered another paella dish of chicken which was also very good, I got a glass of small cold glass of Moritz Beer which pounded down real quick, so I had to order a larger glass because it tasted so good. Their paellas are freshly made on the spot (our black tint seafood paella was to die for) and I watched a fish stew go by that looks like the reason that I will return tomorrow..... There was a family dining next to us with a significant language barrier and were having trouble ordering, 2 of the waitstaff were incredibly patient and helpful and attended to the couple till they got the meal they wanted.
