I've come here a few times and personally I think it is over rated. The food is decent, and the service is hit or miss with no in between. And on the note of drinks I am underage and don't drink. With that being said, I recently went there on a Thursday evening during music on main. As a visitor from Texas, I have never received such poor service from a bartender. We flew in on Monday, checked in, ate dinner, and then decided to grab a drink to cap off the night. Little did we know that the bartender would confiscate our I.Ds because we appeared underage. Couldn't even get in because the bouncer thought my ID was fake, snapped it in half, and wouldn't give it back. He was extremely rude, so I found a police officer who verified that--though an out-of-state ID--my ID was legitimate. Had to spend two hours in the Seattle DMV to get a replacement when I got back from vacation. Not worth the tacky service. read more

I don't usually like bars like this (big, made to look nice kinds of places)...I prefer dives. And the Rocking R just continued to confirm that feeling. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't HORRIBLE, but nothing special either. Lots of college kids both of the times I went there. It also seemed to be run by college kids...some friendly, some bored with their job. You can get food here, but you have to order it separately at this little booth near the front of the bar. Pay for it separately there as well. Food is gross, greasy, bar food at a bigger price tag than necessary. Lots of TVs and it gets quite a crowd for college football. There's lots of seating around the bar as well as some booths and other tables. Too loud to hear any conversation though. read more

Excellent place to sit down, watch sports and then enjoy the dancing crowd late at night. It is situated on main street. The service was excellent. I ordered chicken wings and Caesar salad. Walking in Bozeman this caught our eye because of the patio. Menu looked less than impressive but when the food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised!! We had catfish fingers and a fried green tomato BLT with gooey fries. All were above par and service was excellent. My Huckleberry Mule was dangerously good. I don't really know how to fairly review this place seeing as how going out in Bozeman is COMPLETELY different from what I'm used to (Denver nightlife). My friend had just started grad school when I went up to visit him. Since neither of us knew the "hot spots", his (slighty douchey) roommate acted as our guide for the night. We headed to rockin R after getting some sustinence at Ted's. This place was packed, so I'm assuming that means it's "the place to go" on weekends. The crowd was young, Montana college students. I got a quite a few confused stares- which I am attributing to the fact that I was wearing 5 inch heels and a skirt (while everyone else was pretty much in jeans and boots), and that I just can't fight the rhythm and like to dance around even if no one else is. Once some time had passed, though, people were pretty friendly (maybe because they were drunk, but still). It shocked me how nice all the girls are at Bozeman bars- guess I'm just used to big-city bitches. Everytime we ordered drinks, we were served relatively quickly. The pricing was pretty average, but the bartenders made our drinks STRONG. If I happen through this cow-town again, I'd probably wander through. read more

If you're an out of stater visiting friends who wants bouncers that will break your ID in half and tell you it's a fake, boy is this the bar for you. Had to call the Bozeman PD's non-emergency line to get an officer to come verify my ID wasn't fake. Luckily the bouncer who did not break my ID was reasonable, because the one that did told me to call 911 and refused to give me the non-emergency number. Officer verified it was not fake, and I did not receive an apology from the bouncer who broke my ID... just an asinine comment that he catches 5 fake IDs a night. My husband waited at least 15 minutes for the bartender to notice his empty beer glass. We sat at the bar which makes an empty glass easy to notice, and it wasn't even that busy. Great space, and always packed despite how large it is. I suppose that shows that it is THE place to go out on a Fri/Sat in Bozeman. Plenty of pool tables in the back, and not to hard to snag one for the evening. Drinks pours are generous and are quite cheap (caveat: I'm used to Chicago pricing). Service, however, leaves much to be desired. Flagging down a bartender can be a pain, and that's not solely due to the number of people there. If you want a divey bar that is sure to promise spilled drinks and broken glasses all over the dance floor, this is your place. Every weekend it promises drunk college kids and a typically younger crowd who are there to get their drink, dance and hook up on. Loud music, aggressive bouncers, and slow bartenders. This all adds up to an epic night out. Oh and if you want a pool table, you'd better be willing to wait it out and pay to get a spot. I'd say the only time this place is a good bet is in the summer, when you can sit outside and enjoy a drink. Other wise, it's great for college kids and people who want to get their dance on. Three out of the four of us ordered the same flight of drinks. Of of us got the flight the third got their drink and the fourth didn't get the flight until 15 min lites after we all got ours. We ordered an appetizer which came out at the same time that our meals did. It was cold and obviously sitting there for a while before being brought out to us. One burger came out without certain requested condiments. We asked the waitress for salt and pepper she comes back with salt and says she doesn't know where the pepper is and never brought any. Let's face it - Bozeman isn't a metropolis and doesn't have the number or diversity of offerings like L.A. or NYC; so when a place in Bozeman is fun, affordable, with mostly good food, beer, wine, it gets my attention. The Rocking R is lively and fun with four pool tables, an electronic dart board, a couple of arcade games and sports bar type TV screens along the bar and above the pool tables. The food has always been above average, the beer and wine, acceptable. If you want a mixed drink, you're going to get mixed results depending on who is bartending. My husband & I ordered a Long Island to share on 1/19 & it was very good; we've ordered drinks that weren't so good & they graciously remade them or refunded us. The waitress who usually helps us at the pool tables is down to earth and friendly. Most of the staff have been friendly and helpful. Occasionally there has been someone who isn't, but it hasn't ruined our time. The clientele is diverse, from college kids to retired folks which is good for the ambience, not too rowdy, not too staid. Overall, one of the best places in Bozeman for a fun, casual night out. read more

Second time visiting Rocking R Bar. Very mixed review here. First, the "jumbo wings" appetizer: BY FAR the worst and smallest wings I have ever eaten. I have no idea why these wings are called "jumbo" as they were very tiny and very little meat on the bone. Plus, they were tasteless and dried. Additionally, these wings were $10 for 6 itty bitty wings. Terrible and our bartender very much dismissed the fact when we politely brought up our feedback. Buyer be warned, definitely do not get their wings!! Second, "The Cowboy Burger and fries": VERY good!! I really enjoyed this burger, everything about it, including the bun. Fries were excellent too, although a surprisingly small portion size of fries. I would definitely recommend this burger and order it again. Third, the "Pork Nachos": My wife doesn't eat pork, so we asked for chicken, and immediately told it was not an option. With that, she ordered them without the pork.Well, they came out to us with pork on them, so we politely asked to have them remade. About 20 mins go by (on a slow business afternoon) and the nachos came back out (this time without the pork). Well, to say these were the most below average nachos would be an understatement! There was really nothing to them besides a ton of jalapeños and olives with a side of salsa and sour cream. Not sure what took 20 mins to remake them, but these nachos were pretty poor and we would definitely NOT recommend them, especially since there was no discount for removing the protein, and the mistake of them originally coming out with pork. How can you charge the same price without protein on them??? Our bartender even laughed about the company policy on this one. Overall, a pretty sub-par visit to a place that clearly had no manager in site, no real leadership, and just an average place with below average bartender service...without a real identity or niche. Terrible loud music was blaring too. Whatever on that, but it was a pretty unsatisfying visit across the board. I would welcome a call or email from the owner or GM. Stopped by for a beer and lit snack. Ordered beer and chicken wings. When chicken strips came out instead, the bartender insisted that I had order strips and they were now mine! Stated she was willing to also order me wings, but that I had ordered strips. Paid bill and left without eating anything. Have never been treated so rudely over what was clearly a simple miscommunication.
