I walked into this place with all the history of the building and was greeted immediately. I had a service dog with me and there were no issues. I was able to sit and have a drink and journal and I met the owner, Chris. He is a solid, hard working guy who is running a great establishment. i love this little place, full of history and fun. But I love Livingston! This Bar has better than bar food! I'm not a fan of bar food but my husband loves it. The Murray has an extensive menu, with pizza, fish tacos, soups, etc. I've had most of it and have yet to be disappointed. it's not noisy, it's directly across from the train station, and if your a fan of the Yellowstone series (1923) you'll recognize the area! Much of the essence of Livingston appears to be represented by the Murray Bar part of an historic hotel. While some iconic bars can over do the decor, Murray has just about the right amount to keep it interesting. You can feel the history from the walls. Better yet I enjoyed a very good burger and some very addicting yam fries with a cold brew. This is a perfect place for a nice day as the bar opens up and there is a lot of outside air. I'm a California but frequent Montana a few times a year. My first stop, no matter where in the area I'm staying, is Murray's bar. Some of the best pizza I've ever had! The true star of the show though is the Nashville chicken. I get a Cesar salad, extra anchovies, and add the hot Nashville chicken on top. The hot, spicy, crispy chicken against the cool and crisp romaine, mixed with the tangy dressing and salty anchovies is almost too much for me to bare. LOL. The strawberry jalapeño margarita from here is one of my favorites. The service never disappoints either. Good always comes out fast. Super fun vibe in this place too. Used to be 5 stars. The help is whiney. Oh, poor me, having to work hard. If you are waiting on people, the money is in he tips. I hate stiffing wait staff, but if they keep whining, I may. The big draw was the music, without that they may as well be any bar in town. And they won't commit to future music, which made it an institution, not just for Livingston but for around the world. Now you get no music, average to good food, and whining. Perfect opportunity for someone else, who doesn't mind the footwork to find employees and music, to take over the music and party business. Give those college student cheap housing and high wages and you would have a full staff. You have to make it worth the drive. The talent pool there is exhausted. read more

From the outside it looks like an old dive bar, but as you walk closer, you can see that the walls have been opened to the street, and that it actually looks very inviting (not that anything is wrong with a dive bar). The nice thing as you walk in is that the dive bar part still exists. Plenty of locals sitting at the bar, but to the right is a casual restaurant where we all sat. There were 6 of us, and everyone raved about their food. I ordered a green Chile burger, with a salad. Amazing !! It tasted soo good. So much flavor. Blown Away. The other guys also loved their meals. 2 had chicken Cesare salads, and raved about the chicken. Nice beer selection as well. I had a bloody Mary, and it was on point too. Go here !!! read more

After all the hype we read online, we were honestly pretty disappointed. While we aren't locals to Livingston, we live nearby and took a day trip to hang out in Livingston one weekend. We looked this place up on yelp and saw the great reviews and decided to grab lunch here. From the unfriendly staff to the non-existent drink menu (how is it that people say you should try their cocktails, but then the bartender says, "Just order a drink, we have a full bar. No menu, sorry"??) We really felt un welcome, and it was a slow Sunday afternoon. Instead of ordering a few rounds of drinks and staying a while, we headed to the local brewery where we got great service and a friendly server. *Update* Have been twice, same experience both times. Murray Bar is FANTASTIC! The bartenders we encountered were super knowledgeable and fun. Great drinks and prices! If you are hungry you can order food from Gil's Goods, which is connected to the bar. Order at the bar, and they will bring it over to you-simple. There are Tv's to watch your favorite sports games and later in the night there is a live band. (When we were there we noticed live music on Friday and Saturday). We spent a lot of time here on our trip, from the morning with ordering breakfast at Gil's and sitting in the Murray bar, to dinner and drinks-very accommodating. We used to live in Livingston and we hated it. Like the rest of Montana, it's awful. Tell your friends. We were there recently and were reminded why it's so terrible. The people are incredible, there's no traffic, and it's B.E.A.U.tiful. Couldn't get out fast enough. For real though. The Murray is everything you could want in a bar/restaurant. You could spend all day there. Great breakfast, lunch and dinner. Awesome beer selection from local breweries. Good coffee. It even smells good, (I think they use wood for their pizzas). Gil's which is attached and where the food comes from, also has espresso but I haven't tried it, I'm sure it's great. There are tv's for sports (no hockey subscription that I'm aware of) and they have great bands very often. The burgers and huevos rancheros are incredible, I highly recommend either, or both. We had a guy come tell us we had a cute kid and how wonderful they are. He then bussed our table. I figured he worked there. Went to talk to him later and, I'm not sure, but I think he was just being nice. Him and his buddy were playing cards and both denied ownership of the place. That's Livingston. Me and my wife really want to move back to this town, not just because of the Murray but it doesn't hurt. read more

Passing through for the weekend, we decided to check out The Murray. Was around lunch time , and the waitress was clueless about the beer. No idea about anything. She didn't know a stout from a pale ale. Ordered fries to go with our PBR's because she couldn't tell us anything about the different beers. Frustrating to say the least. We did however, go back later that night to give it another chance. A live band was playing., and we had a beer each. The music wasn't catching our fancy, and asked if there was any other live bands playing in the area. We were told by the bartender, to "F*** off, if you don't like the music". Wow. So we left. Great bar attached to a great hotel - what more can you ask for? We got in pretty late, but thankfully the kitchen was serving until 11pm, so we got a couple of pizzas - really good. Beer selection was awesome, and craft cocktails were pretty good too - i had a Montana Mule, and it hit the spot. There were a few people playing music, and there was some dancing - it was a really nice vibe in there! Poor bartender was working alone & it was pretty busy, so he didn't come around as often as we would have liked (probably for the better since we had to be up and on the road early the next morning) but that's not really a big deal! All to the point where the other bartender apologized for his actions. Eventually got kicked out of "his bar". This establishment was so rude. Being from out of town we would not know that the "Gil bar AND GRILLE" wouldn't be serving food on normal weekdays. After walking in and asking for a menu the bartender was EXTREMELY rude with a response "no one told you? Only drinks tonight" as an out of town guest with a good sense of humor i jokingly responded "oh it's a joke!!" And the bartender responded in a straight face and with absolutely no regard for being kinda "for the second time it's drinks only!". Will never recommend this establishment or hotel for any friends traveling to this area in the future. This place is great. Frequent live music, but not so loud you can't have a conversation. Prices are reasonable and selection is good. My only fuss (not a gripe) is the lack of waitstaff. Both times we've been the bar was packed making it difficult to get a drink order in when sitting at a table - why have wait stations at the bar if you don't have wait staff? Changed the fries to shoestring and was not a good change. Wife ordered the lamb salad that was 17.00 and was more lambs jerky kabobs than a lamb lollipop like the menu stated. My husband and I am visiting from Ft Lauderdale we found this place by asking locals. The place is great hotel-bar-bakery combo place all in one building but connected. Great set up. We stopped on way to Bozeman where we are visiting and had HH bartender was nice friendly and told us about the HH drink specials and $6 pizzas there were 3 specials cheese,meatloaf,pepperoni. We had a strong vodka soda and a meatloaf pizza. Strange topping but it was delish. This place had all types of people in there from 21 to 60s and several gay guys being themselves. Liberal libations, excellent eats, superb staff. Livingston may be a small town, but has become known for good eats, good drinks, and a thriving art community. The Murray Bar is an icon. Any place with Paulaner hefeweizen on tap gets a serious thumbs up, but they also have great local microbrews and they make an exquisite old fashioned. The food scores are also high, given that their menu comes from Gil's next door and the 2nd Street Bistro. I think they out crack in their Greek salad dressing because I'm instantly addicted. The BLT should not be missed. Great live music venue as well. read more
