"Great Drinks, Great Fish & Chips, But Service Left Us Wondering If We'd Been Forgotten" 3/5 Stars My wife and I visited Rock Fish Grill & Brewery in Anacortes on June 13, 2026, while enjoying a getaway in the area. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere with live music playing that evening. The band was performing Yacht Rock classics, and while the musicians were talented, the vocals were just average. Still, it added some fun energy to the experience. Our evening started off on a positive note. The host who greeted us was friendly and professional. She asked whether we wanted to sit close to the band or farther away, and we chose a table in the back where it was a little quieter. Unfortunately, that's where things started to go downhill. After being seated, we were given water and then... nothing. We waited nearly 20 minutes without anyone taking our order. During that time, we saw staff moving around, and our assigned server even looked our direction several times. At one point, he spent several minutes chatting with two waitresses near our table but never acknowledged us. Not a quick "I'll be right with you" or "Thanks for your patience." Nothing. Eventually, I flagged down another waiter and asked if someone could take our order. To his credit, he immediately stepped in and apologized. He told us, "This isn't my table, but I'll take care of you." From that point forward, he was friendly, attentive, and did a great job. Our assigned server eventually stopped by and apologized, saying he was extremely busy, but by then the damage had already been done. As for the food: The calamari appetizer was decent. Not bad, not amazing. I'd give it about a 3 out of 5. The drinks were one of the highlights of the evening. I enjoyed a Summer Whiskey Splash, which was excellent. My wife ordered the House Pineapple Cider. She liked it but felt it didn't quite live up to its potential. For my entrée, I ordered the salmon with rice and asparagus. It was okay--good, but not particularly memorable. My wife's fish and chips, however, were fantastic. The fish was crispy and flavorful, and the waffle fries were delicious. The only miss on her plate was the coleslaw, which unfortunately lacked flavor. Overall, this was a mixed experience. There were definitely some bright spots: a welcoming host, a helpful waiter who saved the evening, good drinks, and excellent fish and chips. However, the service issues at the beginning left a lasting impression and made us feel overlooked. Would we come back? Maybe. We haven't completely written Rock Fish Grill off, but we'd be hesitant. Perhaps it was just an off night, or maybe we simply caught them during a particularly busy rush. Either way, when you're seated at a restaurant, acknowledgment and communication go a long way. We have photos of the meals and video of the live band, which helped capture both the good and the not-so-good parts of the evening. We were hesitant to try this place because of the mixed reviews online but gave it a shot. We were greeted and seated promptly. Being Wednesday evening they had live music, let me tell you it was unique and very pleasant to listen to! We loved it. Our waitress was also great! So attentive, very nice! We ordered the mussels as appetizers the garlic broth had lots of flavor and the mussels were cooked just right. My son's pizza was great, kids Mac and cheese not so much. My husband ordered the pork schnitzel and that was probably the most delicious schnitzel I've ever tasted, the mushroom sauce was on point, breading was great! I love how they serve it with broccolini. I ordered the 6 oysters with clam chowder. The clam chowder was full of flavor and the perfect consistency. The oysters were cooked perfect but they were so small it left me wanting more. We got their brownie to go, it was warm when they gave us the box. Later when we got home and tried it, it had cooled down and was hard as a rock. I would recommend just eating it there when freshly heated. Standard decor you'd expect from a fish themed brewpub. It was busy but the servers did a pretty good job of checking in. The clam chowder was on the thinner side (and GF), which I enjoyed for variety's sake as much as anything. I tired the special halibut and chips and I appreciated the option over the standard "Alaskan white fish" they offer. Breading was good and the waffle fries that came with were decent. The beers were pretty good, with the porter pairing really well with the malt vinegar and fries. All in all nothing great, but I'd definitely come back. read more

I am a listener of KISM FM 92.9 and I heard that there was an event to help the homeless. Basically, eat at participating restaurants and part of the proceeds would go to help the homeless. One of those restaurants was The Rockfish Grill in Anacortes. I've been here before and usually order their pizza. It's very good pizza and I enjoy it a lot! However, today I chose to eat their Etouffee. My wife and her family are from Northern Louisiana and she introduced me to Crawfish Etouffee and it has been a favorite of mine ever since. The Rockfish Grill makes their Etouffee with shrimp. Almost as tasty as the crawfish version when done right! The Rockfish Grill definitely does it right! They have an island of rice sitting in the middle of a bowl of the Etouffee that is chock full of andouille sausage, shrimp, onions, and other bits of goodness. The wait staff was very friendly and I was able to keep myself entertained by checking out all the wonderful decor and watching one of the tv's around the bar. Great downtown local bar with a welcoming ambiance. Plenty of street parking and has a good sized outdoor area. Our server was a sweetheart and he did awesome. Their cocktails are a great deal and delicious. I had the peach one, forgot the name but it was yummy and gave me a good warm feeling. We ordered the fish and chips, bowl of clam chowder and calamari. Calamari 3/5- was soggy where it coated the squid ring and crunchy at the small edge pieces. Wouldn't get again Bowl of clam chowder 4/5- it had bacon and that was a nice touch to it. Added a great crunch and a surprise of salty with the creamy. Taproom and restaurant was a great stop for lunch. We were exploring Anacortes and a local brewery with food sounded perfect- beers for the boys, seafood for everyone! We started with an order of perfectly fried calamari- the boys & I devoured the dish easily. The boys ordered a flight of beers to share and those too were gone quickly. I ordered a cocktail- a huckleberry lemonade smash (or something with huckleberry and bourbon)- very good too, not too sweet surprisingly! Service was great- our server was quadruple sat and we were the 3 table in and she was stellar about communication! John went with a hearty burger- bacon, cheese, beef- man, man, man, man- lol. Robert ordered the crab-mac & shared a bit with me- good gracious it was good! Eddie and I both had a bowl of chowder & everything was delicious. Nice little bar setting. But a bit pricy. I had the halibut and fries and substituted sweet potato fries ($3.50 up charge). I enjoyed the batter but the fish was so dry! The fries were good too. . . ate way too many and was sick later. . . Server was friendly. when we were ready to checkout. . . It was hard to find someone and we were on a tight schedule. Had lunch here and the food was good. Service was a little slow at first, but once I was seated and ordered, my meal came fairly fast. I had the two piece fish and chips. The portions were large, and a generous helping of waffle fries too. The fish is panko breaded, nice and crispy. Price is a bit on the high side, but the portions are generous. Beware of the 99 cent Credit Card fee, they added that even though I was paying cash. They did remove it upon request though. The beer was good with the exception of the black ale that tasted sour (dirty glass or unclean co2 lines?) My husband had a bowl of chowder that was basically warm milk/potato soup with no flavor. I had a beef slider and waffle fries. The fries were perfectly cooked but the beef slider had a stale bun and a very overcooked no flavor patty that tasted like it was frozen not hand formed. The people at the end of the bar all ordered fish and chips that looked like they came out of a box in the frozen section. The women made a comment " is this water running out of the fish when I bite it or oil?" Not sure what it was but either way not good. Super bummed as the reviews for this place were great. This might well be the best meal I Have had in the Pacific Northwest. We had the soup special tomato with Italian sausage and let me tell you best soup I have ever had. I like heat and this made me pace myself. the burgers were ordered Med Rare and one medium. They came well done and the pretzel buns hard on the outside. Only waffle fries offered, no fries, but they were great waffle fries. My beer was cool not cold but tasted great so I didn't mention it. Service was a bit slow. Wow! This place was a pleasant surprise. I walked in for lunch and was met by a friendly hostess who greeted me and took me to a table. The server brought water right away, offered suggestions. When I ordered she took the time to mention an alternative combination of the food I wanted which worked much better. The clam chowder was very good. I had the fish and chips. I really wanted to love this place. I'm a fish and chips aficionado and if you tell me a place has the best fish and chips in the city, I'm there. But from the moment I walked in to this drab, dreary restaurant, I knew the potential for some killer fish and chips was evaporating. We wanted to sit outside, which would have made the ambience much more pleasant, but this establishment doesn't place a lot of stock on comfortable patron seating. Outside dining amounted to a couple of stools and a barrel. The service was excellent, the one redemptive quality for our experience along with the passion fruit mule, which was refreshing. We both ordered the two piece fish and chips. The portions were quite generous and the fish crispy, but neither of us are big fans of panko breading. It should be unnecessary on a well-battered piece of fish. The waffle fries were meh, but also plentiful. Finally. I personally would remove my name from their "signature slaw" as it was lackluster, barely dressed and forgettable. Won't return except maybe for a drink. read more

The service at this restaurant was terrible. We arrived after a day of travel & decided to try this restaurant. The guy that sat us was friendly & said the waitress would be with us. We waited then asked another male for some water. We got our water. After quite a wait our waitress arrived frazzled. We placed wine orders. She brought our wine & said she would be back for the food order. That took quite awhile, we ordered fish & chips and waited. No one came to check on us or ask if we needed anything. Meanwhile They sat two young guys at the table next to us, the waitress told them she needed to see ID's before she could take their drink order. She came back, took their order & returned with drinks. Came back & took their food order. After a while she returned with their food. I asked about our food (this was probably 30" since we placed our order) she went to check, came back & said it was coming. Never asked if we needed anything else. Again we waited & we're getting ready to get up & leave when she returned saying she was checking on the food , asked if we wanted another drink ,we accepted. Our food finally arrived. Mine was good my friends was cold. She also brought the wine & mine was not the same, I told her, she brought me another glass it still was wrong. By this time all we wanted to do was get out of there. We even had to flag down the original guy to get water. We told him we wanted our checks. She brought the checks and she even charged us for the 2nd drinks and they were different prices. Those drinks should have been comped after such bad service. This was the first time for me. I've been a customer for over 20 years. It's a great business with friendly attentive staff. The beer is good as is the food. They also have live music Wednesday and Saturday nights. It's just a great local favorite spot with loyal customers who appreciate the quality service. The owners were really on top of things during Covid and took creative measures to keep customers and staff safe, employed and well served. This is one place that's always busy, so I was happy to finally try after a day of hiking at Deception Pass. There is indoor seating and outside seating when the weather is nicer. They are attached to a brewery and offer lots of local choice beers. Seating was quick, although service was slow maybe due to staffing shortages. We were seated in a corner by the windows which was a great place to people watch. Lots of choices on the menu from sandwiches, entrees, and wood fired pizza. I had the bbq pulled pork sandwich. A large mound of tender pork topped with cheese. Onions and bbq sauce on the side so you add as much as you want. I also had the gluten free bun which was really good, not too dense. Don't forget the pickle spear! Waffle fries were crisp and large. The coleslaw did not have a lot of dressing or flavor. My partner had the coconut fried prawns with sweet potato waffle fries. Went in on a quick weekend getaway with a few friends. We were quickly seated in a packed house. They had a fantastic band playing music on Saturday night that kept everyone entertained. Rockfish Florentine: think of it like a chicken pot pie but with fish. It's super creamy, herby, and had flavors of butter and garlic. Even though it was creamy, it was light and fresh. Overall I was very happy with my experience and would recommend coming in again. Especially if a band is playing on a Saturday night!
