Last year, I chalked up the poor communication and missed deadline as a fluke since it was our first time utilizing them. This year, I verified multiple times, before and during dropping off the saxophone that it would be completed in time as we had a hard deadline for band camp. We had a very narrow window between summer practices and band camp which we discussed the specific date we needed it by, complete with me pulling out my calendar, and we were assured that we would have it. The date is marked specifically on out invoice. Not only was it not completed, it was untouched from us dropping it off and it took them 10 minutes just to even locate his instrument. There was no communication that it wouldn't be completed and now we are stuck, days before band camp starting, trying to find another company to clean and replace pads - where now I will have to pay for a rental for a 4 week lead repair time since the break we had between summer practices and camp was wasted sitting at Western Hills Music. If you can't fulfill deadlines, don't make promised you can't keep. And at the very least, if you can't make the deadline you promised, communicate that to the customer in advance and don't wait until the customer contacts you on pickup day.

They have an incredible inventory of used and vintage gear. A lot of it is fair prices for rare and vintage gear. Frequently they get something modern and mid-range in stock, and they really overprice it. Perhaps you can haggle with them? I'm not sure because I'm not comfortable going in and demanding a certain price. As for selling them your stuff. I've tried a couple of times, but they wouldn't make an offer. They just kept asking what I wanted to get for it and then would say, "no, thanks." There was no indication of whether we were $50 away from agreeing on a price or $500. As for the repair technician side of the business... A few weeks ago I took two amp heads in for repair. One needed new power tubes and biasing which they did in a couple of weeks for a reasonable price. The other had a loud humming issue that needed diagnosis and then repair. In my many phone calls back and forth they could never give me an estimate on the work, the person calling wasn't familiar with the situation, and eventually they gave me both amps back and the second one had nothing done to it and was experiencing the same issue. Their bench fee is reasonable, and they can do simple work (replacing tubes, biasing amps, etc.), but I'm not sure that their technician is up to comprehensive diagnostic work.

Very fair!…read more Had Doug do a fairly extensive project requiring routing for pickups (adding a MM pickup in the sweet spot and moving the treble side P pickup up) and a separate passive (for the P pickup) and active MM preamp all in a P bass cavity, with a 3-way selector for the MM pickup (single, series, parallel). And it came out BEAUTIFULLY! Highly, highly recommend. Watch out for luthiers that have an "open checkbook" policy, i.e. you drop off a project and are hit with the price at the end without any estimate or notice of exceeding the estimate. Another well-known luthier operates that way, which led me to Dmara. Doug will give you an upfront and honest estimate and contact you if he might go over before doing the work.

To hold the strings in place? Then he told us 'You know you have to cut that down, right?(what a douche bag)' We told him that we have a luthier that will cut it for us. Apparently, that just offended his soul. He points to a frame on the wall and said, 'You see that? That says I know more than anyone else in the city!' It was an Associate's degree from the University of Indiana (Juilliard for meth addicts). The rest of the experience was basically him telling us how he doubts our project is professional (although we make more money than probably 70% of musicians-- not to be arrogant, I just know how this business is), how all the great symphonies come to him, and all the local schools bands. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this guy absolutely knows what he's talking about. However, if you play anything other than stuffy classical music-- find it somewhere else or online. There are PLENTY of places that'll cut a bridge for you. I guess he's just opposed to new customers.

The staff there was amazing, considerate and patient. We ended up with an extremely nice viola for less than what I had initially figured. They made sure it fit my wife to a Tee and everything was of good or excellent quality. The instructor I had brought with me was very impressed and said afterwards to me she had never been treated so well nor was a potential customer treated so well in all of her years teaching. Yes it was a 100 mile one trip for us from Columbus one way but worth it. Will be back again to buy a viola for myself soon.

Slow service, which I wouldn't mind had the work done been quality and it is not! I took my Tele in…read moreto get upgraded locking tuners, owner said a few days. I called 3 days later, they said a few more days (the tuners holes already existed but needed to be enlarged and small tuner peg holes needed to be added). Ended up being 2 weeks! On pickup day, there was clamp marks/Indentations on the body that caused damage. The owner said he'd fix it but it will take another week. I can only hope the finish looks the same as I when I brought it in undamaged. If he was to busy to do a job in a timely manner then don't take the customers guitar for 3 or more weeks. I'll update next week and revise my review, I just want my guitar back.

Bass-ically speaking, these guys know their stuff!…read more When you walk in, you know you're in a die-hard Luthier zone. The smell of the wood, the shavings and sawdust on the floor, the parts hanging on the walls and the tables of work in progress says it all. I needed some tuning up on an Englehardt M1 3/4 upright of mine. I can play but I'm not a Luthier. My M1 is not the finest of basses. It's basic but solid. I knew that I wanted another set of strings on it and some tuning up of the bass itself. The previous owner seemed to get adventurous with some of his set up techniques and she needed a good professional workover. The boys cleaned up my fretboard, adjusted my sound pin, replaced my bridge with an adjustable used bridge and put on a set up used strings for me. The price for all of the work was about $600. Not bad. Now, if you're questioning the "used" bridge and strings.... A bridge for an upright bass is usually made from scratch. This can get a little pricey. The previous owner decided to "customize" the bridge that I had on the bass in a way that was not helpful. New strings can also get very expensive as well. I told the guys that I typically pluck but, on occasion, I like to bow. They set me up with a used set of flat strings that work beautifully for both. Not only that but the previous strings were chewed up and eating the fret board. Also, the former strings were more of a round wound type that were tearing my fingers up and would not bow for anything. The set that they put on there was perfect. In all, I was extremely happy with what they did. The best part is that they had it done in a just a few days. Now, this turnaround time won't always be that fast, but it was a huge bonus for me. Here's probably the best part of the experience. These guys are Craftsmen. They know what they're doing and they know how to explain what they're doing and why they're doing it. I learned more about the construction and inner workings of my instrument, during the drop off and pick-up, than I had ever learned before. They were extremely friendly and helpful. Overall a very educational experience. Would I go back? 100%. This is the number 1 place that I would recommend, as it was recommended to me, and I had a great experience. They are professional, friendly and do great work. Whether you have a $500 instrument or a $50,000 instrument, the Luthiers at The Bass Cellar will treat you and your instrument right.
