I had a terrible experience here today trying to see Dr. Gupta. Check-in went fine but as soon as I saw the technician things went downhill. Her first question was, "Did you bring your contacts script?" I said, "No, I was just told to be sure to wear my contact lenses." She said, "We didn't tell you that, we told you to bring your script. Let me talk to Dr. Gupta to see if we can even examine you today." She left the room and rather than coming in to problem-solve, Dr. Gupta apparently told her he couldn't do the exam without the script. I was quite surprised as I was coming in for an eyeglasses and contact lenses exam, just like I've been doing every year for 20+ years. I had never been told to wear my contacts to an eye exam and remember thinking it odd at the time, nor had I ever been told to bring in my old scripts as other optometrists said this can prejudice their exam and they don't like to see them.
I suggested that the tech could call my previous optometrist at Whelpley & Paul in Brighton, where I had a drama-free eye exam last year. The tech sighed loudly and said, "Do you know their number?" I responded, "No, but I can look it up!" So I gave her the number and she called and got Whelpley & Paul to fax over the prescription. Problem solved, right? Wrong! Whelpley & Paul faxed over the prescription but one of the front desk staff grabbed it and put it with a bunch of other papers. In the meantime, Dr. Gupta came into the room and the first thing he did was accuse me of failing to bring in my prescription or box of contact lenses. I explained that this would've been easy for me to do but no one asked me to do it. He said, "You were told to wear your contacts AND bring in your prescription." I asked, "So then you are saying that I am lying?" He said, "I'm not saying that you're lying. I'm saying that you forgot."
This pointless back and forth continued until he finally explained that he could do the contacts exam but it would cost $110. I declined to go forward with this extra charge and proceeded to call Whelpley & Paul to see if they had faxed over the script. They assured me that they had, but the front desk staff couldn't find it so I asked them to email me the script. The front desk finally found the fax, at which point I thought they would be more than willing to move forward with the eye exam but this was not to be! Dr. Gupta stood there for ~5 minutes explaining that I had been rude to his tech and that he no longer had time to conduct the exam. There was no sign of any other patients and I could still see his tech lurking in the background. I found him quite standoffish the entire time and he was clueless enough to think that I wanted to reschedule. I told him, "I would never come back to this place." The impression that I got was the front of the house is disorganized, the tech was not helpful at all, and the optometrist himself is an unhappy guy with no customer service or problem-solving skills. read more
