The experience with Tamra at her One Hip Chic Optical business was nothing short of fantastic. Tamra has an incredible sense of style and is able to identify glasses that are a perfect fit for the customer. It is so very relaxed (her "office" is artistic, stylistic, comfortable living room feel) going through the process with Tamra. She works with the customer - does not dictate TO the customer - what works well (shape, color, frame material etc.). I love the frames we selected - they are incredibly unique, come from a small business in Italy, and are beautifully crafted - it really is a piece of art. Walk into your own private paradise at One Hip Chic. Superior service with a selection you might otherwise have to travel to Europe to be exposed to. All of the glasses are neatly lined up in drawers which add both to the mystique of the process and remind us that we are purchasing not just something practical, but something wonderful, special and unique! The last time I visited the store was about fifteen years ago when I was visiting from NC and mom needed (and bought) glasses from Tamra's former location on Park Ave. That memory was so rich and happy that I thought of no other place when it ultimately became time for me to replace my favorite pair of glasses. Here is a brief history that underscores Tamra's decades of expertise and love for the business -- I repost those words for the convenience of those who (like me) haven't ever previously made it down to the bottom of the page: Tamra writes: "While in my twenties, I made a lot of glasses at a chain store in the mall. The shop was all about high volume. Later, I worked at two private eye doctor's offices. I did pre-exam testing and contact lens instruction. Later, I apprenticed and passed state board exams to receive my license as an optician. I was the first female president of the local optician's society and an examiner for the opticians' test before opening One Hip Chic Optical in 1997. I've had "four eyes" since fifth grade and have never experienced an optician like Tamra. She's the owner and the only employee I have interacted with at One Hip Chic, and is among one of the most gracious individuals I have ever met! Originally I walked into One Hip Chic with the intention to peruse their spectacles (no appointment is necessary). She sells glasses from boutique designers from France, Italy, England, and the U.S. that you will most certainly not find in any other shop in Rochester. There are four metal chest of drawers that you are encouraged to search through independently. These are not your typical glasses, so don't expect to pay typical prices. Most glasses -- prepare yourself -- are priced between $450 - $800. Steep. However, if you're like me and wear glasses the majority of the time, then they are part of who you are -- your look. So, why, then, would you want a pair that dozens of others can be seen wearing? When Tamra was finished working with another customer she began asking me a few questions, I tried the several groovy bright colored glasses on for her, that I had chosen independently. She liked them then pointed out a few considerations that I had NEVER thought of, then she had me try on a few pair that she thought best fit my face and lifestyle. KAZAM! Instant coolness! She wrote down the specs of my glasses and told me to give her a ring once I'd had my new prescription. I had thought that I might be moving into the dreaded multi-focus stage of life and had several questions about adjusting to the various lenses. She answered all my questions and soothed my ego by telling me that she, personally, wears bifocals and it has improved her life drastically. It took several months for me to see my eye doctor, yet when I returned to OHC, Tamra remembered the specifics of our conversation, even incidentals that really had nothing to do with my vision. I ultimately purchased two pairs of glasses. One is somewhat wireless; she polished the edges for free, which is typically not at other opticians. She has a two year scratch-free warranty, which I will never need -- seeing as I never fall asleep with my glasses on...or toss them in my bag without their case...or allow my fur babies to use them as a toy. I adore my glasses! A point to know is that One Hip Chic does not accept insurance, but will itemize your receipt for tax purposes. read more

Went looking for glasses that were stylish and hip. A lot of places had glasses that were just fine, but here we found the combination of hip, style and yet not too crazy that we were looking for. The frames weren't too badly priced, the lenses were a bit over-priced, but we just added it in to finding the "just right" frames. Tamra's is a phenomenal shop. The frames have character and personality. Tamra will help you find a perfect match between your personality and character and those of the frames. She will never let the frames dominate. But her frames can sometimes help you discover the side of yourself that you did not know you had or were too shy to embrace. Tamra would never impose or upsell. I have spent hours in her shop trying on different frames. Three times I bought something. On many more occasions I bought nothing. Tamra has a rare combination of excellent, timeless taste and intelligence, which she deploys to make delicate and often unconventional suggestions. But she would never impose, and she would never rush you. She is not here to sell. She is here because she enjoys the art. One Hip Chic Optical would have been a find and a treasure in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Paris. And we are lucky to have it right here, in Rochester. read more

I don't give 5 stars easily, but Tamra at One Hip Chic deserves every star and more. If I could give 6, 7, or 8 stars, I would. There is absolutely nothing I would change about my experience there -- hence the 5 stars. First, the setting is serene -- up among the trees of Park Avenue, on the 2nd floor -- close enough to all that is hip on Park Ave, yet quietly away from it all with wooden floors, large windows, and then the understated, unobtrusive, superior service a-la-Tamra begins. If you are like me, choosing what to wear is not your strength. I have no idea what looks "good" on me -- thus, I am perfectly willing to defer wholly to designers. And Yelpers, you are in GOOD hands with Tamra. I tried frame after frame after frame, until we narrowed it down to a few "bests." Then, together, we decided on a pair, but it *really* was mostly Tamra. She chose supremely well -- friends, acquaintances, and strangers all comment almost immediately on my glasses. I give 100% credit to Tamra. It is such a RELIEF to have been able to surrender this decision to someone as trustworthy as she is! For anyone who might think the prices high, please consider this an accessory you probably wear daily. I wore my last pair of frames, daily, for 10 years, so when I ammoritize the cost over 3650 days, it costs pennies to have something so incredibly cool & durable. One last note. Tamra was instrumental in guiding me *not* to get bifocals, which really was the best decision for ME. My point being, that Tamra really LISTENS to her clients, and gives expert advice that is tailored to each client. I drove by her shop weekly for 3 years before I needed new lenses, and I am SO glad I went to Tamra and trusted her. You will be, too. P.S. They replaced the broken nose pads on my glasses for no charge, and quite quickly. The owner was very polite and nice, and the store is beautiful. I'm not sure the glasses are in my price range or style, but I'll certainly be back to check next time I need new ones. read more

Knowledgeable, honest, pleasant and stands behind what she sells. I had a great experience with the initial purchase but what has inspired me to write is what happened when I broke my glasses... I cracked my lense and no questions asked, sight unseen (i was traveling out of the country) she ordered a new lense and had it ready for a quick install on my return.
