I had not been to Robongi in years, but it had always been my favorite local Japanese restaurants. (I had visited once in between this and my last review and had enjoyed my sushi lunch.) I recently stopped in for an impromptu lunch and decided to skip the sushi. Instead, I opted for the Bento Box Lunch Special with Chicken Teriyaki and various sides, shooting for a warm meal on the chilly day. The starter miso soup had tons of delightful, rich flavor. The side of brown rice was perfectly cooked; the three pieces of California Roll were very fresh; and the fried vegetable gyoza were just fine and needed more stuffing. My main issue with the meal was the chicken, which was well-marinaded, but slimy and rubbery. It was a letdown that led me to focus my appetite on the protein's accoutrements instead. The service was friendly, but slow, and the dining room seemed a bit cluttered with some storage items out in the open. Everything was just OK. My fav part was that it was BYOB. Sushi tasted ok, not anything special. I tried the salmon and tuna tartar. Both were MUSH. The salmon and tuna were both minced? Not whole/cut up pieces of the fish. It was like the stuffing of what they put inside the spicy versions of salmon and tuna rolls. I was very disappointed. Tartares are usually chopped fish pieces :/ I did not like the tartares too much for this reason. We also ordered the Naruto roll and the Wasabi roll. The Naruto roll was just OK, it was wrapped in cucumber and it had a lot of salmon (maybe a bit too much). The Wasabi roll was good. Both rolls were just OK. Robongi is okay for a casual meal at an ordinary sushi spot. I got the Dragon and Shrimp Tempura Rolls. Both rolls were a decent size but the overly high ratio of cucumber compared to the rest of the fillings in the sushi was what made it a good size. The service was a bit slow and inattentive; for example, I finished my water halfway through the meal and they only refilled after clearing our dishes and handing us the check. I wish they had a low sodium soy sauce option because I was feeling kinda thirsty by the end of the meal. read more

Was really jonesing for sushi the night I came here BUT I will absolutely be back for the crab boil or a big pot of mussels or another one of the amazing things I saw while checking out the menu. You could really tell how swamped he was but he made sure to get our order in quick and check on us regularly. The garlic shrimp that we had as an appetizer was so tasty. It's isn't a huge dish, but great as a starter. The sauce was perfect, I wish I had bread to soak up whatever was left of it. I also got a seaweed salad and two sushi rolls and I was stuffed. I am a creature of nature so ordered a tuna avocado roll and eel avocado roll - both fantastic and not heavy on rice. I tried my boyfriends beef negimaki (something I'd never had before) and was very intrigued and impressed. It was basically scallions wrapped in beef, so it looked like little sushi rolls. I only had one roll, so can't speak to it too much, but if you aren't a sushi person or want something different or even a non-seafood plate to share, I highly recommend. However, the white tuna (usually my favorite) was less than basic - it was still a bit frozen. The seafood teriyaki was drowning in this sticky, thick sauce, and it wasn't very good overall. They're also very generous with their miso soup. I prefer eating here because it's more fresh and the sushi isn't cramp together with the wetness from the ginger. For take out, they put too much ginger next to my sushi that my rice was soaked. I would prefer a bigger box for the sushi deluxe or separate the sushi and the roll. Everytime I walk by this place it is packed and I always wondered why. They are byob so that is probably a big reason. I had tried in the past but I had to try again so I ordered delivery from here last week. Here is my take on the food...Pacific soy roll had a fishy smell to it. Not good. The rock shrimp appetizer was not crunchy and had no flavor. It was kind of slimy. The veggie gyoza were ok at best. They tasted like any other gyoza I have had. The best thing we ate were the regular rolls. The spicy tuna avocado roll and the shrimp tempura roll. Not sure why this place is full every time I walk by. I didn't not think the food was quality.
