PASSPORT STOP #2: Robin Simmons Bakery & 17 Hands Coffee Hi, it's Lexi the Bougie BT reporting from our second Sweet Treat Passport adventure! We stopped by Robin Simmons Bakery--but surprise! It's co-owned by the same folks behind 17 Hands Coffee, which means double the vibes in one visit. Let's talk bakery first: This stop offers 25% off a single-serve item, but the pickings were slim. Mama settled for banana bread (with a tasty cinnamon-sugar crust) and grabbed me a dog treat . The team was sweet and shared that they're known for their cheesecakes and Biscoff cake--but sadly, no Biscoff was in the case today. Just one slice of German chocolate cake. Not exactly a party, especially for a holiday weekend like Father's Day. The twist? Their coffee shop next door had a WAY better bakery case! Full of: Scones Cheesecakes Cinnamon rolls Cupcakes DOG BISCUITS?! Yes please. Mama got herself a nitro cold brew s'mores coffee (10/10) and a brown sugar scone with icing that was so good she talked about it the whole ride home. Final Thoughts: Banana bread: soft, sweet, solid Coffee: PERFECTION Bakery case: cute but not convincing Would we go back? For full cakes or a heads-up that the Biscoff cake has landed--yes. But otherwise, we'll sip our cold brew and treat-shop from the coffee side. Bougie Score: Bakery: 6.5/10 Coffee Shop: 9/10 Dog Friendliness: 10/10 Please give me a follow on our Instagram and our TikTok page at Lexi the bougie BT
I don't see many bakeries in my area of Chesapeake, so when I saw this one, I just had to stop in. My friend, Terri and I were both happy we did. She enjoyed her chocolate chip cookies, and I bought three treats to share with my husband and son, for my son's birthday. I tried all three (blood orange bar, lemon meringue cake, and the caramel bread pudding) and loved all three. They had plenty of treats to choose from, as well as breads and quiches. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and engaging. In the area, Check Them Out!
Cute cafe, friendly staff but there are absolutely no prices listed on any drinks, bakery or lunch items. Pretty sure that's in violation of some sort of Virginia law, lol. It also just feels very shady on a customer's perspective. They also have cups on the side to show their small, medium, and large sizes so my husband and I ordered large lattes. To our disappointment, we received our drinks in medium cups. I asked if this was indeed the large size, and two baristas said yes - despite only getting a 16 oz drink. Maybe there should be a sign explaining what drinks come in what sizes, but again... it felt shady & misleading as a paying customer. Two "large" drinks, a carrot muffin, and a cinnamon roll came up to $30. In this economy, I think people would appreciate some price transparency. I'd like to give it another chance, but this first experience was a letdown.
A great way to start the day is with a drink from here! Service is always great and the everyone seems to work together great to get orders out even when the line is almost to the front door. Their new flavor for September the Salted maple latte with salted caramel whip cream is definitely a hit for fall. I got it iced and man I wish I ordered a larger size cause I demolished it in no time it was so good. Not overly sweet and you can still taste the coffee which is nice, unlike some places you can only taste the milk and syrups. They have been around for a hot minute and the space is quiet small but still feels cozy when your inside when its busy. I highly recommend if you haven't tried this place to give it a shot. They have plenty of drink and pastry options!
We have been coming to 17 hands for years and are just so sad with the changes that have been made throughout those years. Although the expansion into the space next door with the bakery has provided more room inside to move around and hang out, it feels like they have tripled their prices since then. Getting a special shaken espresso and a slice of quiche was $24. Whenever my husband and I come together, we expect to spend at least $30. It's not like we're buying more than one drink and maybe one breakfast item. Sucks to see as it used to be our favorite spot. + it still takes 10 minutes (on a good day) to get your food. Yes it's so good, but I don't know if I can pay $9 for a medium latte and consider that a win.
Went for a coffee run and found this bakery near 17 hands coffee shop I didn't noticed before. In , I checked and met the owner , the brilliant and hard working Robin. So I ordered the most delicious German cake and her special cheesecake. Found out she supplies all the fresh baked goods for the 17 hands coffee and they have an open door to them. The coffee shop is a delight and the nice staff is so helpful. It actually has a family business feel. I truly enjoyed my rich and creamy coffee and my pastry I got from them. I wish I knew them before but now I know I can come back and will keep coming to this gem of place. Thank you for the adventure Robin.
It's really becoming frustrating as this is now the 4th time i've received the wrong item. Specifically by the barista / cashier Cyrus, whether it be typing in the correct order or creating the correct drink. I ordered a Matcha latte and to my surprise received a coffee. I frequent 17 Hands very often so this has happened now a handful of times , but I would hate for this to be a reason for me to stop ordering from this establishment as I am a big fan of their seasonal specials. I would hope care put into my orders going forth.
We stopped by 17 Hands Coffee and were instantly impressed--not just by the drinks and food, but by the warm, welcoming vibe from the staff. We tried an iced Americano that was absolutely delicious. The hot butterbeer latte was a wonderful: rich, creamy, and full of magical flavor. We also added a cinnamon roll to our order... It was decadent, gooey, and perfectly sweet! The cozy atmosphere, great service, and creative menu make this place a new favorite. I agree with other reviewers that the prices are higher than other coffee shops in the area; however, it's worth checking out!
Yummy coffee shop!!! Was down in this area and decided to caffeinate before heading to a concert and it was a great experience! Coffee was delicious! Both got iced brews with skim milk and the coffee had a great flavor. Great variety of flavored syrups. Tons of flavored syrups, coffees, teas and other drink choices. I'm sure people will find something they like. Also picked up an M&M cookie and orange roll/bun. Both were so good! They have a lot of food choices from lunch sandwiches to quiche and lots of sweet treats as well. They have a good number of seats and an area to pick-up your drinks. The woman who took our order was kind and asked if we wanted our orange bun heated up, which was a nice gesture. Will be back when passing through the area!
Stopped in to check the bakery out! I ordered a chocolate chip cookie! Took one bite and had to order another! Upon walking in I was greeted by the staff and the wonderful bakery smells. I would recommend checking this out.. they have a variety of desserts and freshly made bread.
I really had been looking forward to trying this spot, so I really really wanted to love it. I ordered a large iced French toast latte and ended up paying about $9. I didn't get any add ons, just a large iced French toast latte. I also did not end up getting any sort of French toast flavor from my drink, so that was kind of a bummer since that was the reason I wanted to try it. The service was great and friendly, nonetheless, and I've read great reviews on 17 Hands, so I'm sure this was just a fluke. We also stopped in Robin Simmon's next door (had no idea they were connected/affiliated) for a piece of cheesecake and red velvet cake. It had a similar pricing style to the coffee shop, but the NY Cheesecake was super tasty and we would definitely try again! Overall the cheesecake was genuinely worth the higher price, but the coffee and red velvet cake were not.
Visiting from the other coast, needed a caffeine boost with proper flavor. Saw this location and wanted to give it a try. Wow. Great coffee shop atmosphere. The reception we got was great! The gentleman behind the counter even came around to show which cheesecakes were recommended... all of them. This award winning cheesecake is to die for. Honestly some of the best I have ever had. The 20oz coffee tuxedo mocha latte is far superior to any coffee shop I had to date. Virginia is lucky to have such a staple in their community!
I have been coming to this coffee for a few months now and decided it was finally time for me to write a review. I have 3 coffee shops that I frequently visit, and this is one of them. It takes a lot for me to give a 5 star review because 5 stars, to me, means you are damm near perfect, and I have no recommendations for improvement. 17hands gets 5 because they consistently deliver a well-balanced, flavorful latte, and their customer service is top-notch. I normally stop by at least once a week, and it would be more frequent if I didn't live 20 minutes away. I'm always greeted by Kelly and other staffed as soon as I walk in the door. Depending on what time of day you go, there could be a long wait. On weekends, I definitely recommend getting there before 9 am, if not, you might be there for 30-60 mins waiting on your order, but it is definitely worth it. The ambiance gives a very rustic but chill vibe. They also have some outdoor seating. My latte recommendations are the butter beer and the bourbon caramel machiatto. Seasonal recommendations are, of course, the pumpkin spice latte and the cinnamon apple latte. I'm more than positive you will like your drink no matter the flavor. If you are concerned about the sweetness or sugar content, you can request half sugar. One unique thing about this coffee shop is that they also serve cocktail. I personally love a good coffee cocktail. I have tried the traditional Irish coffee and the pumpkin white Russian. The Isish coffee was nice and smooth and had the perfect amount of whiskey. The pumpkin white Russian is a fall flavor and was delicious. I definitely plan to order that again before the end of the season. I'm was never a big fan of scones because they are usually dry, and most times, they lack flavor. However, the scones at 17hands are absolutely Devine and highly recommended. Their scones are super moist and flavorful. I've tried a few different flavors, with the blueberry lemon being my normal go-to. They offer both sweet and savory flavors, as well as a vegan option. Other baked item recommendations are the cinnamon rolls, which sell out normally, and the sticky pecan roll. The sticky pecan roll, I think, might be seasonal. It is very delicious, however, I do find it a little pricey. They also have pre-sliced cakes and pies in the fridge from their bakery next door; which is very convenient.

Recently voted best in the area, and for good reason. Very helpful and polite staff that provide great service. Additionally, they are open past 2PM on the weekend, which is great if you need a mid-afternoon pickup. Recently had the Mr. Pistachio cold brew. Definitely recommend! read more
I stopped by looking to get something sweet. When I walked in they were busy trying to clean up and whatnot since they were closing in 20 minutes. So it took a few minutes before they greeted me. But they did eventually, and they were friendly. I looked around to see what they had. It was different whole cakes, cake slices, cookies, breads, coffee, cinnamon rolls, quiches, and etc. They are affiliated with the 17 hands coffee shop next door. They make the quiches and baked goods for them. The whole cakes looked pretty. They also had some fall flavors in desserts and coffee!! I did find it confusing that nothing had prices. I had to keep asking how much everything I was interested in was. The cake slices are about $7-8 per slice and the cookies were $3-4 depending on the flavor. I got a red velvet and a double chocolate cookie. They were both a good size and thick. They were ok. But nothing buttery or special stood out. The double chocolate was the better cookie out of the 2. The red velvet was a little bland. But looked appealing. I'd like to try their cakes in the future. I will say there were a few fruit flies lingering in the showcase which is why I chose the cookies. There's some outdoor seating. They only sell whole quiches here, but you can purchase individual slices next door, because they don't have the capability to heat them up there. I'd come back to try other things. Check them out!! read more
Visited today for a scone and some coffee. It's been awhile since I visited. Had the Maple seasonal coffee latte and it was a bit overly sweet great flavor. Maple pecan scone was tasty but I think the savory scones are just above all here. Onion Gouda and jalapeño are incredible. I noticed the menu is now printed by the register, makes it a bit difficult to prepare to order a few other copies along the line would go a long way! read more

One of my favorite coffee and pastry spots. They bake their own goods onsite and have so many options. From gigantic cookies and oatmeal crème pies to cake slices and the most moist scones I've ever had I tried the rum glazed scone and it was to die for the coffee I ordered was also delicious I ordered their bourbon maple coffee in the iced form it was not too sweet and had a bold coffee flavor it was delicious I love the decor it is perfect for a ladies lunch or even to meet up with a board game. They have tables as well as couches and such The staff are the nicest ever and very efficient they offer punch cards for frequent flyers and daily specials The bakery that is attached takes specialty orders as well as has fresh baked goods on hand it is a wonderful spot tucked in the corner of a busy shopping center read more

What a great coffee shop. I truly wish someone would open one closer to me. Let me start with the selection of items this gem has to offer. It was a little difficult to pick just one drink . They all sounded amazing. I chose the bourbon caramel latte with oat milk and boy was I happy with my choice. Would definitely order this again after I get through all the other choices available. The service was amazing. Everyone was so friendly and patient. I guess they are used to having their guest stumped with trying to making a choice. The shop is very inviting. Their decor is very eclectic but homey. I found it to be a fun place to sit for a bit and have a great cup of coffee. While we waited for our coffee we decided to go next door thinking it was a separate business. Turns out that the bakery and coffee shop are one and the same. They get all their goodies freshly baked from next door. Had a great conversation with the owner. She was so friendly and open to answering all our questions. Can't wait to go back and try another cup of deliciousness. I highly recommend this establishment. Make sure you have time to sit and enjoy your drink while taking in the ambiance. read more
Love this neighborhood coffee shop and attached bakery. It's a good thing I don't live down the street from 17 Hands anymore - it's too tempting to drop in and get a scrumptious pastry or baked good along with a cup of Joe. They do have some keto offerings (scones and sometimes cheesecake slices), and the bakery takes orders for whole keto cheesecakes as well as other diet-restricted desserts. They have a wide variety of hot (and cold) coffees and teas. Do stop in and try their key lime cheesecake while it's in season - you won't be disappointed! read more

This was such a great place to visit! Super welcoming and friendly staff. Amazing coffee and bites to eat! When you enter, you immediately get a sense of community. I came with my 1.5 year old which I am always nervous about. But they were so accommodating... they had coloring pages and crayons on deck. And every staff member was friendly to her too. That means a lot to a foodie, coffee loving mom like myself. I loved the set-up of the cafe as well. Lots of seating and cute decor. My brother and I both ordered a quiche. I got the spinach one and him, the Mediterranean. Both so so good. My God. They truly know how to do a quiche. The flavors were spot on!! Idk what else to tell you except to get yourself a quiche or else you're missing out. Something else that we ordered was the sweet potato biscuit... a first for us to have one. Man, it really hit the spot!!! Especially with the honey cinnamon butter. Yes, yes! We tried the lemon lavender scone. My brother liked it. I thought it was tasty but I'm just not a lemon pastry lover. I did enjoy that lavender icing. Drink wise: I got a dirty vanilla chai and my brother got the horchata macchiato. Both refreshingly amazing. After all the chai lattes I've had, I never had a dirty chai before. I'm glad my first time having it was here because it went beyond my expectations. I loved my experience here and definitely recommend this coffee shop to locals and visitors!!!!! I'll be back when I visit my family. :) read more

Holy moly, 17 Hands does not mess around. I've come to understand that 17 Hands is one of the better, if not the best, local coffee spots. When I came in with my sister on 10/23/22, I may have to agree. They offer so much more than just good coffee - 17 Hands demands multiple visits in order to try the plethora of items they offer. So they have coffee - check. They offer tea - another check. Wait, they offer scones? Cakes? Biscuits? Cookies? Cheesecakes? Quiche? They sell coffee beans so you can brew coffee at home? Whoa, they have a LOT of stuff. In addition, their staff is friendly and patient, so the entire experience was fantastic as well as overwhelming (in a good way). Not being a coffee drinker, I had some hot tea. My sister, her husband and I split the key lime pie (delicious!) and Oreo Explosion (rich but tasty). My godson was busy playing with his toy cars (and the lazy Susan - sometimes simultaneously), but he enjoyed a chocolate chip cookie and tap water. I think the only issue I observed is there isn't a lot of indoor seating - their kitchen area takes up a lot of space. There isn't much space left for customers to really chill. But that's probably the point - get 'em in and get 'em out. It feels so cozy in there, though, so my natural reaction was to hang out and relax. Thank you, 17 Hands! You guys are awesome! Came here the other day for the first time while I was out, and it will definitely not be my last. I got the nitro cold brew and my husband got the regular cold brew/ both really good. We also split a piece of the red velvet cake .... Cue the drool. I finished off my trip with a lavender lemonade for the road, which was very tangy and had a strong lavender flavor. I cannot wait to come back and try more of their baked goods and specialty drinks! The scone flavors were calling my name, so that is definitely on the list. Good amount of outdoor seating and a few spots to sit inside. Definitely a cute spot that I am so glad I found! read more
I am thoroughly disappointed in myself for not writing this review before now. I absolutely adore 17 hands! For one, they are the only place in HR that can consistently get a cortado right- so that's 5 star service right there. Also, their baked good- to.die.for. I've never gotten anything less than delicious from them. Especially those sweet potato biscuits!! And last but not least, customer service here is awesome. I always feel welcomed and informed about the menu, as well as get answers to all my questions. This is definitely in my top 3 coffee shops in HR! read more
I love love love 17 Hands! They are a cute lil coffee shop that feels nice and cozy. We had one of their scones which was delicious! I got the butter beer specialty coffee, and I really enjoyed it. It was the perfect amount of sweet and creamy! My husband has the earl grey tea which was super yummy and not just your typical tea. They had taste testing for the carrot cake and raspberry dark chocolate cake, and let me tell you, those were awesome. If I didn't have so much cake from an event at home, I would've bought some. The service was great, they are quick and very nice. 17 Hands is a coffee shop that I just keep coming back to! Never disappoints! read more

Drove to this "little" gorgeous place to check it off my punchcard for the Coastal Coffee Trail. I am so glad I joined the trail else I would have never come across this gem of a coffee house/bakery. Staff were so pleasant and friendly, it's a very welcoming environment. Seating was a little hard to find inside but I assume that's because I went during the lunch rush. You've got to step inside - but be warned, Yelper, you WILL leave with some sort of pastry/food item. They're just right there, staring into your soul, silently screaming TAKE ME HOME. I caved and took a matcha cookie with me. Sweet, earthy, and salty, all in one mouthful with a delicate crunch and still retaining moistness. I've been on a bit of a cortado or espresso trip recently, so I opted for a double espresso with a dash of almond milk. It hit the spot and brought me back to life for the 95 minute drive home to Williamsburg (664 & 64 traffic incidents... the matcha cookie helped me stay sane!) Will definitely be back and highly recommend! read more
This place must be off the hook amazing is my first thought because I have never seen a coffee shop with so many people in it and waiting in line. We showed up at the perfect time because we were only 2nd in the current line. At one point I counted around 50 people. Staff were super busy. As we were ordering I asked if they were always this busy. The guy said they are busy but this seemed a little over the top busy to him. I think I want to go back on a non busy day to see if our experience will be different. Food was great. My favorite was the scone. We got Blueberry lemon scone. We also got the broccoli quiche - super yummy and we got the sweet potato ham biscuit. I'm not wild about sweet potato anything, BUT I could see people being wild over this. They have a lot of food to choose from. My husband got the Mexican hot Cocoa and it was great tasting. I got their special Birthday Latte . It was ok. Did not have much of a coffee flavor and I ordered it with whipped cream on top with sprinkles and I did NOT get either. I looked at my receipt and it did say it with whipped cream and sprinkles. I think they were just overwhelmed by the volume of customers that they had and were just trying to get drinks out as fast as they could. So for my coffee it fell flat but I loved my husbands hot cocoa. I will give them a 3 1/2 in hopes that when we drive all the way out there again we can pop up the stars. I think maybe they were just having an off day. If we kept it at the food it would be a 5 but it is a coffee shop so the coffee has to deliver. read more
The lavender black tea later and the chocolate chip caffe late was a great choice for our first time. It was busy and took a bit for our sandwiches but once I had my bite of my sweet potato biscuit with gouda, ham and egg I was happy. It was moist and full of flavor. Their bakery has many pastries, like cinnamon rolls, quiches and scones. Their sweet potato biscuits are only available on the weekends. My hubby had a regular buttermilk biscuit I love this spot for their originality and special drinks. Coffee and tea lovers will love this coffee shop. You can't pass on their pastries. read more
