I went in today with my disabled husband and his caregiver and the gruffness was obvious. While the building is small, it feels very comfortable and homey! Their menu features a lot of very unique drink options which I appreciate because it's always fun to try something new. The vibe is very nice, the only downside is that it's located next to Walmart so the view is the parking lot lol. First time at 17 Hands after getting a recommendation from a nearby business. They are located in Kempsville Shopping Center. No issues with surface parking that's nearby their front door. The walk up was debris free. The shop has a lot of coffee and some merchandise for sale. I wanted to try a coffee and baked good. They are known for their blueberry scones, but I went against the grain. The Vegan Blueberry loaf appealed to me. With it being later afternoon the bakery Cade was pretty bare, but blueberry scones continued to crank out. They also had a coffee special, a carrot cake latte. Service was helpful and friendly. The dining room has a decent amount of space to enjoy a brew and treat inside. Outdoor seating is limited, but they do have it. The decor is pretty dark and rustic with wood tables. I chose a table in the rear that was clean. After around 5+ my blueberry loaf was called out by my name. It was warmed up and pretty good. Being vegan it was not as sweet, but I liked it. Another 10+, too long in my opinion my name was called for coffee pick up. At that point most of my load had been eaten. The coffee was pretty good, not blowing me away. I come here at least once a month just to eat their bacon, egg and Gouda on a sweet potato biscuit. The biscuit is so moist and big. You get bacon in every single bite and the Gouda just brings everything together. A perfect balance of sweet, salty and savory. Their drinks are also pretty fun. Very home feeling cafe, tons of options to choose from, love that they have seasonal menus. I paid almost $10 for a mango sticky rice matcha and it was definitely not worth that, would try an espresso/coffee if I return again. The chicken salad was good but not great that I couldn't substitute the bread - the white bread it comes with was super thick and not my preference. Total spent for just those two items was $22 + tip, which I think is kinda crazy. Bring back more affordable cafes! Main highlight was the customer service; the man at the register was so knowledgable and passionate about this place which really resonated with me. Coffee was good but our service sucked. The tables inside were dirty as well even though they seemed empty for a while. They weren't busy when I came in either. I got a 20oz Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte ($9) and it was made in about 5 minutes. The drink was sweet which I liked and it did have a good cinnamon toast crunch taste to it. Staff were friendly. If you're on the fence about what to order, get the Mediterranean. It's BOMB. That said, as someone who used to be a barista, the coffee wait times can be... a lot. And I don't mean "a little busy"....I mean almost forever. I've been multiple times and it's been consistently slow, even when it doesn't feel slammed. The last time I went, I ordered the birthday cake latte, which was good, but the wait definitely tested my patience. Another small downside is the vibe at the register. The staff sometimes come off a bit annoyed, which can be a little off-putting, especially when you're already waiting a while. Overall, this is still a solid spot with excellent food and creative drinks. If the service flow and front-of-house energy improved, this would easily be a five-star place for me. I will start by saying that my coffee and food were delicious! The service was also friendly. However, the vibes weren't for me. I like to visit coffee shops to work but this was a terrible environment for working. The music was really loud, it was pretty crowded with tables close together, and it was just generally pretty loud. They also are not transparent with prices. I paid more than I normally do at other coffee shops for a coffee and pastry. While I don't mind if the product and experience are good, I didn't feel that the environment warranted the prices. But I also did not expect the prices as they do not post them on the menu board. The website also does not have a menu or prices. The only way to see prices is to scan a very small QR code right by the register. Overall, while the coffee and food were good, I will probably not be coming back. I've heard such good things about this coffee shop and it did not disappoint. It's not very big, but it's cute. I loved my iced toasted marshmallow latte. I did not try any of the baked goods, but there was a very nice selection. They also have little punchcards so you can get a free coffee! However, my favorite thing is the selection of coffee syrups for sale. I love monin coffee syrups, but I can only find certain ones on occasion. 17 hands has every flavor that you can think of! Key lime pie review 6/10. The cookie crust was too hard and the meringue ratio was off...at the coffee shop the slices are also so very small, the meringue was good, but there was nothing special about this key lime pie. I'd also did not enjoy. The crust was only on the bottom and not on the side like a classic pie. It was a good rendition of a Keylime pie, but the crust being so hard made this pie a flop. The food and coffee were amazing. The sweet potato biscuit was the best thing I tasted. The sausage egg and cheddar were a good portion for the price. The sour cream coffee cake was so moist. The Kosmic brownie drink had a good level of sweetness and I loved the toppings! The lady who took my order was very patient and friendly while I decided what to get. After moving around the corner from this shop and oftentimes seeing it busy, we decided to stop in and give them a try. The day we happened to go they were PACKED. Weekends are usually not the best time to go it seems but we had already drove over and decided to stay committed to getting a drink. In line, there seemed to be only one person taking orders when we went and the young girl who was ordering in front of us seemed to either have a complicated order or issues with her payment possibly so it took a little longer than expected. However, a worker came over to assist but never called us over. They waved the next person in line and completely looked over us. So this led to a longer waiting time. My husband ordered the largest size iced coffee and I ordered the smallest. It did take a bit for the drinks to come out but this was expected due to the amount of people coming and going which was totally fine. Once we got our drinks, they tasted decent. It wasn't anything that I would go out of my way to try again but it was a good drink. They did not, however, give my husband the correct size drink. We ended up paying over $20 for two coffees and both got small sized drinks. For the price, I would rather go elsewhere. The line being so long, we decided to just eat the cost and head out. Our first visit to this coffee shop and we were met by the "hype-man" to place an order. He was great, recommended coffee orders for each of us, and we also ordered quiche. One spinach/feta and a Mediterranean. No worries to take 8-10 minutes to heat the quiche. The shop was comfortable and lively. Coffee order came up and my Capaccino was warm, not hot. Quiche was ready a few minutes later, and 2 bites in, it was cold. Not luke warm, but cold. I asked if it could be heated more, which they said was not possible. I assume this is a food health/safety issue. They offered another slice, taking another 10 minutes. I had no confidence that it would be any better and declined. The other slice was also cold part way through. I got a box to take them home and let the hype-man know how disappointed we were. He apologized, also offered another quiche but by them I was not interested. This shop gets good reviews, but I don't see any appeal in returning. read more

Came here for their specialty lattes that they only had for a few days for their birthday/anniversary of their opening. I got the banana bread latte which I feel like they could improve. I couldn't taste any hint of banana or even the cinnamon component of the "bread" part, and the coffee tasted diluted to me. I also got the Honolulu shaken espresso. Imo, it was very sweet and the macadamia and coconut flavors did not really shine through to me; however, I thought it was good as a latte overall. As for service, it was quick, but the cashier was not very welcoming. This isn't the usual cafe I go to so everyone has their off days.
