This morning we decided to go for a drive, and before long we found ourselves at Pale Horse Coffee, located at 1296 S. Battlefield Boulevard, just outside the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake. Having visited their Summit Pointe location before, we were pleasantly surprised by just how spacious this café is. The Great Bridge location offers plenty of comfortable seating, making it an ideal place to meet friends, catch up on work, or simply relax with a great cup of coffee. Their retail area is also much larger, featuring an impressive selection of branded T-shirts, hoodies, mugs, coffee beans, and other merchandise for those who want to take a little piece of Pale Horse home with them. We arrived just before the Saturday morning rush, which proved to be perfect timing. No sooner had we settled into our seats with our lattes than a group of nearly thirty people walked through the door. It didn't take long for the shop to become a lively gathering place. Despite the growing crowd, the atmosphere remained welcoming and unhurried. Whether you're looking for a quiet corner to enjoy your favorite espresso drink or simply stopping by to grab a coffee on the go, Pale Horse has created an environment that encourages you to stay awhile. In addition to an excellent selection of coffee, espresso, and handcrafted lattes, they also offer a variety of fresh baked goods if you're looking for something to enjoy alongside your drink. One piece of advice: arrive early. Word has definitely gotten out about this place, and it's easy to see why. Even if you happen to visit during a busy period and have to wait a few extra minutes, the quality of the coffee and the friendly atmosphere make it well worth your patience. A strong experience for my first visit after brunch at The Stockpot Chesapeake. They are located in the space previously occupied by Big Ugly Brewing. Parking is adequate. One of the first things I realized after stepping in their door is they are a very pro military operation. They have lots a sign that indicate military support like a wall hanging of Challenge coins. Also the names of the coffee. They sell a large variety of their own coffee in bags. They also sell merchandise. The roasting operation is open for the public to see. I decided on a cup of medium roasted blend. Staff was great and also useful assisting with my choice. They provide samples. They have space to enjoy your cup too. But I got mine to go. Veteran owned coffee shop that has a large space. I'm a bit biased on the service because I was surprised to see one of my nieces best friends growing up behind the counter - BUT she was kind and knowledgeable - so it isn't just biased that I think the service was fantastic! They had recommendations on a board and I asked when she would order, the ordered that one. It was a butter cookie latte, so yummy! Coffee Shop No. 404 Pale Horse Coffee Chesapeake, VA 23322 September 3, 2024 When I started researching coffee shops to visit on our way to the Outer Banks Pale Horse Coffee was the first shop to peak my interests. First, they are a veteran owned company. Many of my family members are veterans. I am a veteran. My husband is a veteran. It would be accurate to say most of my favorite people in this world are veterans or spouses of veterans; so I never miss a veteran owned coffee shop. The second thing to catch my attention is Pale Horse Coffee roasts their beans in house; which if you have never been to a shop that roasts their own beans you are missing out. The smell is fabulous. Lastly, these guys have earned the Costal Virginia's Reader's Choice Best Coffee Shop since 2020. Putting Pale Horse Coffee at the top of my list was a no brained. The shop has a large open concept with plenty of seating and electric outlets. Many folks were working to include adults and a couple of homeschool families. Military patches and challenge coins are displayed on walls. Bags of coffee and merchandise promoting the shop are available for purchase. When ordering cortados I always look around for small 4-6oz glasses or cups so I can order my cortado "for here". I looked at the top of Pale Horse's espresso machine, saw the cups and ordered the cortado "for here". I was so disappointed when the barista handed me a large coffee mug; in most cases this will guarantee a poorly made cortado. I accepted the mug and sat at a table feeling a little down, but then I noticed the mug was only half full. I took a sniff of the cortado; it smelled incredible. My mood changed instantly and then I took a sip. The barista made a darn near perfect cortado! Moral of the story is don't judge a cortado by its cup! Enjoying life one cortado at a time! read more

My first time coming here today. Loved the atmosphere/theme! Very proud veteran-owned with wall the branches represented, patches on the wall, military themed merchandise, challenge coins displayed. I did purchase two stickers as posted in the pictures, $1-$2 each. Light country music playing in the background. What's especially important to me as a remote worker is a coffee shop having an abundance of comfortable seating WITH OUTLETS. This is so important, I always call ahead to ask. Along the left and right wall of the space there are multiple surge protector power strip. Amazing. And of course they have free wifi, a good coffee shop given. Also, long hours from 6a-6p so I don't have to rush finishing my work for the day. Dependable remote working space. Very open industrial looking space, masculine decor. Brown leather couches, dark colored metal and wood tables, skeleton themed. They have this HUGE coffee grinder machine in the back left you can see, awesome. Loud sounds of coffee grinding and the classic espresso machine, which I appreciate. A bit of an echo in here, but not disruptive. I ordered a Guardian Iced Coffee. Salted caramel and Vanilla. It's great, but very bold coffee. Which most people love, but I'm more of a sugary sweet girl. It's good though. BOLD COFFEE is the takeaway. My iced latte was $8.40 though... which is a but pricey... I think $6 or even $7 would be far more appropriate but it is what it is. They do have a soda fridge with red bull, canned soda, bottle water, and juice as well if you don't like coffee. Unfortunately. Their burrito case was empty when I arrived :( It is very busy. Expect most every table to be filled at 11am. Overall, would recommend. Went to one location to get gift cards and they didn't have any. Drove to the Chesapeake location of Greenbrier. They had one and told me they could do an online gift card. Told them I needed to call my wife and check stepped out of line to let the next person go. The clerk during that time sold the one gift card to the customer I let go! Knowing I needed at least one physical gift card! My time and money will probably just be dedicated to black rifle from now on. Couldn't even get an apology! read more

I will have to say this is a manly coffee shop. Big leather couches. Dark wood tables. Cool murals on the wall with a skeleton's hand holding a coffee and a Pale Horse with the rider holding a hot cup of Jo. A girlfriend and I came here on our coffee trail but I am going to have to bring my husband for sure. This place has such a great comfy feel. Oh and DOG friendly. I LOVE DOGS!!! It is a great place to hang out and have coffee. They roast and sell their brand of coffee. They have a pretty large variety. The lattes are great. I got the latte of the week=LOTW it was butter pecan, shortbread. taste like a cookie latte. My friend got the Rip Cord Latte. Both were great. I did like the Rip Cord the best out of the 2. The cinnamon really made it nice. They have a good selection of milk alternatives. They were all out of food. When we sat down to drink our coffee we saw them restocking. We just moved to the area and noticed this was one of the closer coffee joints that aren't your typical DD or Starbies. The vibe if I'm being real isn't it for me. I feel kinda awkward inside, maybe it's because I'm often the only one with a mask on, but truthfully I'm not one to sit inside to drink my coffee anyhow. The menu doesn't list prices for it, but they do offer iced drinks. It's getting to be warmer so iced coffee/lattes are my poison. I've tried the iced guardian and iced warthog, and the iced guardian by far is the superior choice. The flavors are nice and married, and the actual drink is very smooth. Easily chuggable. My husband has tried a hot chest candy (I didn't enjoy that probably because of the raspberry), and he enjoyed it. He's also tried a hot chai latte, and it was everything. It was so velvety and rich. I'd probably have chugged it had I ordered an iced one. It's that good. They do have bags of beans you can also purchase, and I'll probably buy a couple to try at home myself but also to add to care packages for loved ones. We'll probably be frequent flyers here. Ok, full disclosure... I've actually never physically been to this coffee shop, but I've had their drinks 3 times now and I am very confident about what I am about to say, so I'll go ahead and say it ... they have the best damn Iced Chai Latte I've had in a very long time, maybe in my life (and I often don't make "the best I've ever had in my life" statements). You probably didn't see that coming, since this is a place known for coffee, but they hit the nail on the head with the chai, wherever they source or however they make it! My BIL is a huge fan of this shop and their coffee and since we moved back to the area, my BIL or SIL will do a quick run to get us all some drinks in the mornings. The first time, I asked them to get me an Iced Mocha and it was great. Right amount of coffee and chocolate. Then, I had the Iced Chai twice last week and daaaaaaamn, I was addicted after the first one. Speaking of which, I want one right now! The spice combo, the sugar level and the whole milk just jive so well together and it just makes my taste buds so happy! They have really fun merch too. My SIL got a few of their things for my BIL's birthday like their coffee, cold brew, t-shirt and to go cups (look at the bottom haha). If you want the nutshell version of a review, this place has good coffee and ample seating. I have been to both locations at this point and I like the one on Belaire Ave. a bit more, just because it's quieter during the day. When I'm at a coffee shop, I'm working, but I don't expect people to be quiet, it's just nice when that is the ambiance! I haven't had their house brew, only a vanilla latte and a London Fog, both which were good (though expensive. Things in VA are not cheap, are they? Sheesh.) $8 for a large vanilla latte is a bit insane. The thing I think they reeeeally need to change about their service is announcing when someone's drink is ready, especially if you ask for a name. Both locations just had me continuously looking at the bar to see if my drink was ready. That's kind of annoying. I don't get the branding. First time here and ordered The Guardian. The Guardian has salted caramel and vanilla flavors which intrigued me since those are my 2 go-to flavors! I was hoping that the coffee would be strong and keep my tired butt awake... it did just that. I was pleased with the quality of the coffee. It was rich and bold! As someone who is boycotting and is tired of Starbucks, I needed something local that is close to my parents' house when I visit Chesapeake. This is one of my best friend's favorite place to go so why did I never try this place? I think it's just because it's a little bit further than the closest Starbucks location. However, I will definitely take that extra 2 minutes down the road for another cup of coffee. I think that Pale Horse is 100% worth it. The plus side for me is that it is veteran-owned and pet-friendly! Not that I'm either but I have veterans in my family and have friends who want to bring their pets on coffee dates. Place is amazing!! Ordered the chai tea latte with oat milk....then last minute added lavender to it per staff suggestion! And it was a very good recommendation! I will forever be adding lavender to my chai tea latte from now on! Staff is very friendly, clearly they give great recommendations lol. They have wifi available for students and remote workers. So this would be the perfect place to do work and enjoy coffee. Open space, you're able to maintain 6 feet social distancing. I've been 6x in the last 3 months and every time I am charged something different for the same drink. Sometimes it's in the mid $7 range and twice it's been in the $9 range. I order the exact same thing every time. Large lavender oat milk latte. I spent most of my adult life between Scottsdale, Los Angeles, San Diego and Pensacola where coffee is definitely specialty - but I've never spent $9 on a latte until here. One of my visits I ordered my usual and paid, however, it wasn't until they completed my drink that they tell me they were out of oat milk. No offer to refund the additional cost for the oat milk or give me some kind of punch card, etc for a free drink next visit. Just a bummer bc well, I paid the additional fee for oat milk and had I known I would have ordered an entirely different drink bc that's how I like my lavender latte - with oat milk. As a military spouse I want to dig this place and support there cause, but I can't figure out the pricing or why I wasn't told about the oat milk before my drink was made with whole milk. One of my favorite places for coffee. Every cup has a great flavor. Not too sweet and every different flavor I have tried has been great. All the staff is friendly and feel like immediate friends. The atmosphere can be a bit loud at times but for the most part I have enjoyed sitting with friends and having a chat over a great latte. They have tables for studying and couches for lounging. They serve baked items, and freshly rolled cigars, as well, but we did not imbibe. A unique coffee shop, and pretty good coffee. PARKING - it's in a small shopping center with a good amount of parking so you shouldn't have to worry much about that. A part of the store has their merch displayed - tshirts, hats, bulk coffee, cups + mugs, along with a little book nook where you can borrow, take, or donate. Those are always so nice to see in coffee shops. The vibe inside kind of gives me more of a brewery type of vibe, but it's actually kind of nice having something not typical. Their slogan is "... when you feel like death", lol. Actually very clever. They also have a ton of military patches/coins on the wall because they're veteran-owned and take pride in that. COFFEE - my husband got a hot latte, and it was their latte of the week (peanut brittle, which is a peanut butter and salted caramel). I got the Chest Candy, which was a white chocolate mocha and raspberry. They have unique names for their lattes (like mustang, rip cord, etc). All relative to military background, or even the horse in their name. They offer 2 sizes - 12 or 16 oz. Their packaging (marketing on their cups) is very thought out, for having their logo on the cups and on the hot cups it feels even like a ribbed sleeve. Coffee was good, just wish I tried a different flavor, lol. I thought I would like mine very much but I actually enjoyed my husband's more. One thing I wish would've been different was asking for our name. It was a very busy morning and as the coffee was done, they'd call the name out of the coffee but everyone would be wondering who's was who's. Someone actually ended up grabbing my coffee and I had to wait for another one to be made. I came in on a Tuesday morning right after opening. I've been dying to try their coffee and I'm so glad I did! The building was very spacious. As you walk in, you'll see a wall to your right covered with their coffee to sell. They have a wide range of coffee strengths. Their names are pretty catchy as well. At the cashier area, you'll find their desserts that consist of pies and puddings. They also have cookies. I had no idea what I wanted. I was asked what I felt like this morning and with that, he offered me a sampling of their blueberry cinnamon crumble, which at first did not strike my fancy. However, when I tasted it, it blew my mind how delicious it was. It was very smooth and I could taste notes of chocolate. A little dash of cream and sugar and I was in caffeine heaven. I really would have liked to find some mini dessert to take to work, but they must have sold out. I will be coming back to try another coffee and some coconut pudding/pie. Great customer service. Pale Horse also supports veterans and first responders. During the height of Covid, Pale Horse kept the local fire department, ambulance service and medical staff in gallons of coffee. If they needed coffee, the got coffee. Pale Horse supports a program called "Soldier Socks". For every pair of socks sold, a pair is donated to a service member serving overseas. At Pale Horse, our four legged friends are not forgotten either. Pale Horse supports Military Working Dogs with coffee for the handlers and money from the sale of special bags of coffee.
