Mike from Robert's Key Service is the best in the business, and unfortunately, he is starting to feel the urge to retire. There aren't many others out there like Mike, who possess the ability to reconstruct the old, crippled, defunct lock systems in the old houses from the late 1800s, but Mike is that guy. I hope that we can find someone who is interested in learning the trade before Mike turns in his keys and enjoys his retirement. My oldest daughter needed to make some spare door keys of her new home, so we went to Lowe's and Home Depot. Both big box retailers couldn't do it because they claimed the key was odd sized, so they didn't stock the duplicate. We went home from the suburb with frustration. I did some research on Yelp and located Robert's which was located only a mile and half away. Went there next morning and had 4 duplicate keys made in 5 minutes. The cost was less than $13 with tax, cheaper than the big box retailers. The gentleman that helped me was extremely friendly and professional. I called Roberts 3 years ago after an ex girlfriend gave me a number I thought was Robert's.. the number turned out to be a lock scam company trolling in Baltimore. I had to change 6 locks and the total cost was around $650. I had no clue what lock services cost and in the end could not get the guy out of the house fast enough. I went to get a copy of my house keys and the guy there started talking to me about "listening to the crazies" all day. He continued taking and I learned he thought the "crazies" were Black Lives Matters activists. He then talked about a cop being shot yesterday by a member of the group here in Baltimore, which I googled upon leaving and found that, in fact, no cops were shot or injured. He then told me the Black Guerrilla Family are targeting cops and released a statement, which I also googled and the Baltimore Sun reported over a year ago that the police were releasing uncorroborated statements about a gang threat on the day of Freddie Gray's funeral. There were no additional reports on the topic. He continued, telling me that it's a Black Lives Matter "rage day" today, which I looked up and found on Snopes.com to be a false rumor, completely unassociated with the Black Lives Matter movement, and identical to a rumor releases on this day in 2014. The group the rage day claims to be associated with is the hacktivist collective, Anonymous, but Anonymous has made statements that this is a false rumor and not something they have released, planned or spread. The "day of rage" also claims to be about "civil disobedience and the right to protest" which doesn't even seem that threatening even if were real. Finally he concluded by saying that there would then be a regular Black Lives Matter protest later tonight, and acted like this was also something to worry about. IMO a protest seems like people exercising their constitutional rights, and this is nothing to be scared of. tl;dr The keys were fine but in the future, I will go to Waverly Ace hardware so shopkeepers won't inflict me with their racist, alarmist, and factually inaccurate opinions. read more

I had problems with the Waverly ACE hardware store two times prior to visiting Robert's because the idiot who copied my key couldn't understand that one of the "shoulders" of the key was actually part of the blade that went into the keyhole so I ended up with keys shorter than the original that don't work. Went here this morning to get the same key copied. Without me having to say much, the gentleman who helped me out knew exactly what I needed and made a perfect copy of my key in less than a minute. So, the long and the short of it is that this place does its job -- I got two keys made quickly, for a grand total of $3 and two minutes' time -- but it comes with two big hangups for me, specifically the overwhelming reek of tobacco (it's also a cigar shop) and the owner's uncomfortable attempts to start political conversations with no prompting from the customer whatever. I needed the locks changed in a house I just bought in Baltimore. I called Robert's to ask how much they would charge to come take care of it for me ($95 for the first half hour, plus $12 per lock). That seemed like a lot to me, but it's actually right around the going rate for a locksmith in the city. Without me asking, the guy on the phone who was super friendly, advised me that it would be really easy for me to take the locks out myself and bring them in, and then it would just be $12. He told me how to do it (remove a few screws), and so I decided to try. As it turns out, it was very easy. I drove to their shop with five locks, and they had them all changed out with a new set of keys in about a half hour. Total cost - $50. I bet anywhere else would have charged more, and I doubt they would've been as friendly. Some of these locks were really old, and they knew exactly how to deal with them.
